How do we live the 'good life'?
Proverbs tells us that wisdom is something that is essential to successful living. Wisdom is something the will impact your family for generations to come, as will folly.
How then can we get and grow in wisdom?

The principle that underlies wisdom is the Fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. This means to revere the Lord, honour him and to seek his praise, it brings repentance and understanding.

	* Importance of listening. Wisdom is the pay off for having the discipline to listen rather than talking. Prov 4:10
	* The moral dimension to wisdom. Prov 4 explains the judgement required to chose right against wrong. Prov 5 advises to invest in marriage. Sin hardens our hearts and therefore makes it hard to see objectively.
	* The need to protect your heart.Prov 4:23 Above all else guard your heart. Recognise that you have a sinful nature and can easily fail if we rely on our own strength.
	* The wise man always takes the long view
	* The wise man comes to Jesus for mercy

Pray that you might trust in Gods word, in the knowledge that His way is the 'good life', taking a long view on life.</itunes:summary>

Proverbs is a book of wise sayings written by Solomon and other wise authors.
The purpose is to provide & deepen wisdom. It’s an important book because we only get one life, before we are ushered into eternity.
One of the blessings of being human is that we are given the ability to learn what life is about and know and act in a way that brings success.
Prov 3:13 tells us that in wisdom and insight you are able to interpret life and make the most of it!

How to obtain wisdom? It calls out to you (Prov 1:20)

Life is not random, but rather ordered and structured and hence wise sayings have universal application. Proverbs offers wisdom on the patterns of life. Wisdom is worn like exterior clothing and should be visible. There are 3 aspects of wisdom.

Know where you are (the context of life)

Identifying right decisions to make

Having the discipline to make & continue to make right choices

Eph 5:15 commands us to continue to live for God, equip yourself to make wise choices
The world was created by God, is ordered and knowing him is the foundation of wisdom. Prov 1:7 the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Jesus parable about the 2 men who built houses, one on sand, one on rock, reminds us that the right foundation is required for wisdom.
Give thanks for the wisdom of proverbs, pray for wisdom and for ongoing discipline to make right choices.

The great hope of the Christian life is the certainty of heaven. Matt 6 – Jesus commands us to not lay up earthly treasures, but to focus on heavenly treasures. Make sure you chose the right treasure because your heart will follow.

Where is heaven?
The place where God is. The permanent eternal home. Why did God create us? For the display of his glory! Rom 8:20-21 gives us a hint of why God deliberately allows the world to live in chaos before finally being liberated, transformed from old to new. The new testament talks about the restoration of all things (Matt 13) Most probably, if we die before Jesus returns we will be spiritually in paradise, until Jesus returns when we will be given new bodies. Rev 21:3 God will dwell with his people, Rev 22 the new garden of Eden, a place on earth!

Why should we be certain about it?
Because God won’t allow Satan to win. (Gen 3) God will crush the serpents head, God will not allow his glory to be defiled. Jesus being resurrected body gives us solid hope that we too will be given new bodies in heaven.

What is heaven like?
Sure it will have Peace, a place where there is an end to suffering & illness, a place to see those that we love again. But the main element of heaven is God – dwelling with man. The presence of God brings an end to futility. 1 John 3:2 When Jesus appears, we will be made like him, and will see Him as he truly is! God will still be God. There will always be more of God to know, there will be work to do, responsibilities, sunsets, oceans, plants and trees all proclaiming the glory of God.

Pray that you will treasure heaven above all things, and therefore have a heart that says no to sin, to have a passion for sharing the gospel with others.

The great hope of the Christian life is the certainty of heaven. Matt 6 - Jesus commands us to not lay up earthly treasures, but to focus on heavenly treasures. Make sure you chose the right treasure because your heart will follow.

Where is heaven?
The place where God is. The permanent eternal home. Why did God create us?
Nothing is more important than to develop a deeper understanding of the grace of God.

1. Grace Saved us
Grace of God refers to Jesus who gave himself for us. v14 Titus 3:4 When grace appeared, we were saved. It is something that was done publicly and is accessible to all. Because this grace is offered freely and without any performance based requirement, our response is often ‘does it really matter what I do?’ see Romans 6.

2. How – Grace Teaches us v12
Redeemed means to buy back, and grace saves us from the slavery of own selfish desires. The knowledge of this redemption sustains out ability to reject sin and live godly lives. Grace teaches us that going back to sin is like returning to the prison of sin after being set free.

3. Why? To gather people for his glory
Because God is gathering his special people, and our salvation is less about ‘me’ and more about God. Belonging to God means to be holy to him, free from the enslavery of sin. Eph 3:10 God is all about making his awesome glory to the heavenly realms. And he does this by holding up his redeemed people!

Pray that you will understand the holy imprint that God has used to purify us, and to treasure this grace so that it shapes our desire to live godly lives.

Craig Dobbie on Titus 2:6-10 12/06/2011

What truths create a good community? Pauls doctrine aimed to teach the people of Crete how to live as God commanded.

1. Necessary relationship between individual and the community.
Ultimately the way a community exists is shaped by the values that are held by it’s members. Most Australians are individualists, placing our own issues above that of the community. Paul understands that although we are individuals made in Gods image, we are also members of the community and require self control to protect community values.

2. Self control is saved minded.
Self control is the only command Paul gives to Young men. Self control is an important antidote for Pride, love of pleasure, sexual temptation, tendency to be thoughtless and rash with comment. Seriousness is not prized in today’s society, because it is perceived as boring and negative restraint on freedom. However Paul calls us to take the gospel seriously, exhibiting a “saved minded” approach to living.

3. Make the gospel attractive by the way we live.
We have a responsibility to the great community at large, but an even greater responsibility to the Christian community. Paul calls Titus to live in a way that doesn’t let the gospel come into ill repute.
How does my life make the gospel attractive to outsiders? Do they know I’m a Christian? Good words without works is ambiguous . We need to be thoughtful enough to critique individualistic society values to uphold the Christian community.

Pray that you will have a commitment to and a conviction about the importance of Christian community.

What truths create a good community? Pauls doctrine aimed to teach the people of Crete how to live as God commanded.

1. Necessary relationship between individual and the community.
Ultimately the way a community exists is shaped by the values that are held by it's members. Most Australians are individualists, placing our own issues above that of the community. Paul understands that although we are individuals made in Gods image, we are also members of the community and require self control to protect community values.

Seriousness is not prized in today's society, because it is perceived as boring and negative restraint on freedom. 3. Make the gospel attractive by the way we live.
We have a responsibility to the great community at large, but an even greater responsibility to the Christian community. Paul calls Titus to live in a way that doesn't let the gospel come into ill repute.

OLDER MEN
Older men can become forgetful, irritable and ill disciplined, and therefore Paul calls them to be temperate (not indulgent), tempering their passions, and restraining from developed bad habits. Self controlled by continuing to be
sound in faith, love and endurance. Older men are to be the ones the church, families, grand children can look to as role models.

OLDER WOMEN
Women who are freed from early child raring are recognised by the Bible with dignity. Older women should develop a reverent demeanor, which is an inner conviction about the gospel that is expressed in holiness rather than vanity.
This conviction should enable discipline in relationships preventing slander / gossip. Older women are treasured teachers of the community by the ways she conducts herself. Younger woman especially need older women’s perspective.

Pray for the older men and women in our church, that they will pursue ’sound doctrine’ and become treasured examples of godliness.

Sometimes issues are so critical that they demand radical action. In Titus 1:10-16, Paul’s tone suggests that he feels that the false teaching in Crete is a critical issue in need of confrontational silencing.

The ‘circumcism group’ seemed to embrace Christianity but retaining some traditions of Jewish religions by ‘adding’ to the gospel. Adding to Jesus takes away from the gospel message. It demeans the gift of the gospel, suggesting that there is something missing from the Gospel, and also says that the giver (God) needs our help in some way.

Teaching is such an important role in the church, for the successful spread of gospel message. Just like in the days of the early church, the biggest threat facing the church today is false teachers.
This group was suggesting that by external experiences that you will feel closer to God. However external things can’t make you more pure with God. Purification comes from the work of Jesus. v15

Experiences make us realise what we are close to God, they do not bring us closer. Are you relying on external experiences for your salvation? Pray that you will have Paul’s passion about preserving the truth of the gospel

How are Mums like God?

1. Blessing not a burden
Mum’s pour themselves out for others, continuously giving not taking.
God has given us everything, life, health, grace, even dying for us to restore us into right relationship with Him.
In return he asks for the whole of us (not because he needs it), but because it’s right. Matt 11:28-30

2. Hard working & humble
Mum’s work hard and without glory.
Our God is always at work (John 5:6) Not only did God create the world, but he humbly took on human form and died for us (Phil 2:5-8)

3. Gentle & loving
Mum’s have an ability to comfort, care, and love in a unique and powerful way.
No matter what we do, a mothers love is so deep that is unfailing.
This love is a glimpse of God’s unconditional love.
Eph 3:17-18 Pauls prayer for the church is that we will grasp how wide high and deep Gods live is.
And yet Gods love IS conditional that we fear & honour Him, living in gratitude for what He has done for us.

You can take your Mum for granted and get away with it. However we will all stand before God and be accountable for our lives.
<itunes:summary>Tim Baldwin preaching on how motherhood shows us how God is & his goodness. 08/05/11
Motherhood was Gods idea, and therefore reveals something about His character.

How are Mums like God?

1. Blessing not a burden
Mum's pour themselves out for others, continuously giving not taking.
God has given us everything, life, health, grace, even dying for us to restore us into right relationship with Him.
In return he asks for the whole of us (not because he needs it), but because it's right. Matt 11:28-30

2. Hard working & humble
Mum's work hard and without glory.
Our God is always at work (John 5:6) Not only did God create the world, but he humbly took on human form and died for us (Phil 2:5-8)

3. Gentle & loving
Mum's have an ability to comfort, care, and love in a unique and powerful way.
No matter what we do, a mothers love is so deep that is unfailing.
This love is a glimpse of God's unconditional love.

On mother's day as we honour our Mum's, pray that you might honour God living in gratitude for what he has done.</itunes:summary>

Titus is a letter written by Paul to Titus, a Greek who was carrying on Paul’s work in Crete.

Why write this letter?
Paul wants Titus to appoint Elders to continue leadership of the church, and the letter provides instruction on character traits which Paul saw as ways to counter potential problems, (evident in Ephesus)

It is necessary to protect what is precious.
This applies to relationships including marriage, and our relationship with God.
Human nature is weak. What is tangible always takes precedence over what is unseen.

Therefore we need to actively guard ourselves from letting all that Jesus has done for us slide into the background.
Pray that Jesus becomes central in your life, and that you understand the need to guard & protect this truth.

If you were going to make up a religion, to make it easier to sell, you would tend to leave some things out. (e.g God’s anger, judgement, jealousy of God)
Jealousy is usually used in great literature as the foil for good. And yet from Deut 4:24, Moses tells us that God is a jealous God. (See also Exo 20:5, Exo 34:14, Josh 24:19, Eze 29:35, Zech 1:14, Nahum 1:2)

To know God, we often think of things from our life, up. Therefore we take attributes that we like and multiply them to assume these are what God would be like. But we are mere creatures created by God, and therefore we need to humbly submit to the bibles teaching from top down. The God that we make up, and become comfortable with is not worthy of your life. The God in the Bible is worth getting to know and understand as He is much more worthy of your life.

Comfort
Normally, jealousy comes from envy, frustration, spite. It feeds and is fed by pride). Jealousy goes wrong when it desires things that we are not meant for us. (God made me this way, and gave me this face, these abilities – so don’t envy others for these things). Jealousy can be positive – protecting positive values of security, comfort and joy. It’s this jealousy that God has for us which should give us great comfort. Rom 8:31 if God is with us, who can be against us.

Challenge
Gods jealousy should bring about a corresponding zeal in us for him. When we reject God in favour of other things, God knows that this is futile, it grieves him and makes him jealous. God knows that the best way to live is to follow him. Any obsession that we have apart from God is stunting and damaging for us. But being obsessed with God is what we were made for.

Pray that God’s spirit will capture us that we will be zealous in living to please God.

Being a christian is more than a personal relationship with Jesus, it’s our job to fish and shepherd.

Jesus said, if you believe you will follow, and to follow we not only need to be people who believe, but ones who fish and shepherd. That is, it’s more than your own personal relationship with Christ, this belief comes a responsibility to care for those in your Christian family, and to bring others to know Christ.

Fish
We see in the passage that the disciples catch 153 fish, and Jesus not only cooks the disciples breakfast, but instructs the disciples and therefore us, to fish for people.
See also Luke 5:10

Shepherd
Jesus also calls us to ‘feed my sheep’. Being a shepherd applies to leadership, but also is applicable to all Christians as we set examples in the way we live, and humbly care for our Christian brothers and sisters.Around a coal fire, just like when Peter denied Jesus 3 times, Jesus asks Peter ‘do you love me’ 3 times, not to condemn him but to reinstate him publicly.
Peter appears to have a healthy distrust of his own heart, and no longer carries the pride he had when he asks Jesus to sit at his right hand in heaven.
What does it mean to be a shepherd ? To care so much for the sheep, that they would do anything to feed and protect their sheep, even lay down their lives to do this.

Being fishermen or shepherd, comes at great cost. For Peter, it meant crucifixion and we should expect suffering as we follow Jesus.
1 Peter 4:12 Peter highlights that suffering as a follower of a Christ is normal and we should rejoice in our suffering.

The Bible’s story begins in a garden, ends in a garden, and this climatic story of the resurrection starts in a garden. As Mary finds the empty tomb and her first response is ’someone has moved the body’ indicating she wasn’t expecting a resurrection. John and Peter arrived at the tomb and John makes the point about the folded linen. It’s as though the body has diffused through the cloth. John vividly remembers this event and it’s as though his belief is one that he ponders deeply, fully appreciating later.

Jesus is the template for the new bodies that we will receive. Restored both physically and in spirit we get a sense of how our eternal bodies will be.

Why the resurrection matters?

God is personally good to us. It shows God truely cares for the world (picking ordinary blokes and despite their failures, mercifully & patiently turning them into spirit filled apostles)

The cross/resurrection is God’s powerful statement that He will renew what he has made.

Why the resurrection matters?

John 19:31-42 we see John’s account of Jesus burial. In the Jewish calendar the Sabbath starts Friday at sundown. The cruelty of crucifixion usually brought death through asphyxiation, and to hasten death large mallets were used to ’smash the legs’. John drives home the truth about Jesus death in order to convey the critical facts of this event.

Fulfillments.

Irony

There is a Pharasee in all of us. It’s very easy to think you have ‘arrived’ an therefore become complecent about our life. Joseph and Nicodemus were moved by Jesus and his death and were able to put their Jewish traditions aside.

If what John wrote is true, then life is about being moved by the gospel, to understand the love of God to provide a lamb for us.

John 19-16b-30

John 19-16b-30
Which matters matter? From the start of John’s gospel he writes that from the beginning God’s purpose was to save the world. Now at John 19, this plan was realised as Jesus is crucified.

John seems to skip over the gory details of the cross and highlights some seemly mundane and random details.
John raises details to show that the scriptures would be fulfilled and it seems that Jesus had Psalm 22 at the top of his mind this whole day.
- Soldiers casting lots for Jesus clothes.
- Not a bone of his body would be broken
- His side would be pierced
- ‘I am thirsty’

John also uses them to point out the sovereign hand of God at work.
Finished / completed is translated from the Greek “Tetelestai”meaning ‘it’s done’ and it’s appropriate that this is Jesus’s last words.

As we mature, we can look back and see things that at the time seemed really important, but on reflection were not significant at all. As we encounter the things of life, we need to reflect on events with a spirit filled heart, and to see them in the context of God’s greater plan centered in the cross.

If what really matters is what God is on about in the world, then we need to be so captured by his perfect plan that it passionately shapes everything that we do.

We love power, and it’s nice to hear that to follow Jesus is to follow the powerful one shown through powerful healing and teaching.

In this passage we see Jesus being mocked, beaten and humiliated and it can be difficult to see this as a demonstration of power. It’s horrific that this treatment should happen to anyone, and yet this happens to the true king of the world. How disciplined Jesus must have been to restrain himself in the midst of the physical and emotional torture, all to be obedient to God’s plan. So who has the power in this passage?

Pilate who has the authority of Rome, control of the armed forces and it would initially seem that he is the one with power. But, Pilate and the Jewish priests are in power struggle, and the Jewish leaders blackmail Pilate suggesting that Jesus is claiming to be in opposition to Caesar, recognizing Pilate’s shallow conviction. John points out the irony of the Jewish leaders who despite their religious beliefs say that ‘we have no king but Caesar’. The truth is that the Jewish leaders didn’t recognize Jesus as the messiah because he didn’t exhibit what they were looking for in power – physical and political power.

Jesus explains in the climax to this passage that all power comes from God and while he could have with a spoken word zapped his mockers, he respectfully in obedience bore this suffering in our place.

Isaiah 53 forecasts that Jesus was to be humiliated, disfigured, as a suffering servant king – which is the amazing way that he became the conquering Messiah! To have Jesus as your king is to humbly accept His salvation. Our sin caused Jesus to take this path. To follow this true King, we need to serve Jesus by humbly unselfishly and sacrificially serving those around us, in order to bring glory to God’s name.
