For ever, O LORD, thy Word is settled in Heaven. Thy faithfulness is unto all generations . . .

As the July 4 weekend approaches I always find a mix of emotions swirling in my heart and mind. While I rejoice over the great gift of freedom we have as Americans, I also recall the year when my mother lay dying. Instead of celebrating our nation’s independence, I was praying for God to set her free from the bondage of sickness, disease, and dementia. God answered that prayer on July 6, 1998 so today marks the 10th anniversary of her death. May I share with you some thoughts that I shared at her funeral?

Ecclesiastes chapter 3 says that there is a time to mourn and a time to rejoice. We’ve come today to do both of those things. We mourn the loss of one whom we loved very much; yet we rejoice because of a life well lived and because we know that today Mom is resting in the arms of Jesus.

I will always be grateful for these last seven years because when my parents moved to Pennsylvania it gave me a chance to spend time with them in ways that I had not been able to since we left for the mission field in 1973. These last three years she lived in a nursing home where she won the hearts of all the nurses and staff with her gentle spirit and sweet smile. The word that describes these last few months with her would be “sweet”–just “sweet.” During our visits she looked at me often and said, “We had good times, didn’t we? We had good times.” I nodded in agreement.

We sat and reminisced, talking of her childhood and growing up in Tennessee. She remembered years and family times in Michigan– birthday celebrations, holidays, and the excitement of grandchildren coming along. Over and over again my mother recalled the faithfulness and goodness of God throughout her lifetime. She mentioned repeatedly how He blessed us, cared for us, and always met our needs.

Even without all the self-helps books available today, Mom and Dad managed to balance love and trust and discipline in just the right mix as parents. They taught both of their children the meaning of commitment and they demonstrated how to be caring, giving people. They also taught us to work hard, to trust God, and to follow Him. I will never forget, especially when Tim and I were preparing to go to Africa years ago, hearing Mom say repeatedly, “You know, the safest place in the world is in the center of God’s will. You can be sure He will take care of you if you’re following Him.” Those words come back to me often as I travel life’s journey.

The last thing my mother said to me was in response to my words to her. As she lay there in the hospital, virtually unable to speak, I looked at her and said, “We had good times, didn’t we?” She replied as well as she could, “Oh yea,” and she smiled.

So today while we weep at the loss of this loved one, even more we thank God for the good times and for His faithfulness throughout her entire life. We look back saying yes, she worked hard; she trusted God and she followed Him. What a heritage she and our father left us! She certainly could say, “I’ve fought a good fight and I’ve kept the faith”— and that faith kept her right to the end. Now as I think of my mother, I recall the good times and I remember especially the faithfulness of God.

Loving God, I thank you for sweet memories of one who taught me so much.

2 Chronicles 7:14
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. *(NIV)

Recently week I had the privilege of planting 10 tomato plants, 5 different varieties of pepper plants, sweet basil, and also doing some general watering of other plants and flowers. The days are beautiful, and I have to admit that I love a project when I’m outside. Especially if it doesn’t involve weed whacking or weed pulling . . . let’s just say I hate weeds!

After planting in the garden, which was extremely tough to dig, at least for my little muscles, I was pleased with the work that was accomplished. I started up the John Deere Gator, careful not to drive over the plants I just put in. I was also careful to make sure the bed was secure before driving off–only to discover that I ran over something as I backed up! It was our tomato cages! The ground was too tough for me to put them in, so I was waiting for my husband to help. Now they were completely smashed beyond repair.

I’ve learned throughout my life to admit to my mistakes, so I drove up to Ken and told him what I did. His calm reply was “That wasn’t too good.” To which I agreed and said, “At least I admitted to it. That is something, right?” His phlegmatic response was, “Yeah, that’s good for something.” Still we have only one tomato cage which is barely in the ground because I quit trying to force it in, but it saved that cage from destruction.

I paused to think. How often have I crushed someone’s spirit? Broken his dream? Damaged her self worth? What choices do I make that “run over” others with my carelessness?

I am thankful that even though I make mistakes, I have a patient husband, a forgiving Lord, and a second chance. Sometimes things I do can’t be repaired or fixed and they must be started over. It is then that I must humble myself and admit to my wrong doing, seek forgiveness, and move ahead without condemning myself. Jesus Christ is the One that forgives all my sins, my shortcomings, my failures, and He loves me all the while. He still has great plans for my life, even when I mess up.

Heavenly Father, please forgive me for the careless things I say or do. Lord, I desire to honor You with all my words and actions. I ask that You would work through me to encourage and challenge others. Thank You for all that You have done and all that You will do. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

Knock, chip, sand, smooth, paint, glue . . . It was fun watching the young people at Vacation Bible School this week as they cleverly and enthusiastically fashioned their individual race cars for the upcoming derby. No two cars were the same, not in design, shape, size, or color. Each was uniquely and proudly created by tender hands and an eager heart.

I couldn’t help noticing how carefully those young hands worked with their cars and the changes that took place with each step of the process; and so, from wedges of plainness came uniquely designed and brightly colored “masterpieces.”

Do you know the song written by Joel Hemphill that was so popular several years ago, “He’s Still Working on Me?” I love this little song because it reminds me that God is at work in my life fashioning me to be all that He designed me . . .“He’s still working on me to make me what I ought to be . . . How loving and patient He must be, He’s still working on me.”

It is indeed with tender love, gentle care and great concern that the Master Designer works on you and on me to shape us according to His great plan. Carefully, eagerly but patiently He works to produce vessels designed for relationship with Him and destined for service to Him.

Almighty Creator, God of the Universe, may I always be aware that You are constantly working in my life, fashioning me according to Your plan and purpose. May I be pliable in Your hands and may my life bring glory and honor to You.

It made me laugh when I read that there are more collect telephone calls made on Father’s Day than any other day of the year. No matter how old they are, it seems children desire to connect with their dads on his special day to honor him, express their appreciation, and to let him know that he’s being remembered—even if he does have to pay for it! Most dads don’t mind, though. They’re just glad to hear from their kids.

God, our Loving Heavenly Father, longs to hear from His children, too. He delights in hearing their praise, honor and expressions of appreciation for who He is, and for what He does. By His death on the cross, Jesus Christ opened those lines of communication for us to connect with God the Father anytime, anywhere. What an incredible thought!

Be sure to connect with your Heavenly Father. Tell Him how much you appreciate His gift of salvation and the blessings He sends your way. Praise Him for His faithfulness. Let Him hear from you not just on Father’s Day, but every day. Call Him often. Remember, you don’t have to worry about the charges. They’ve already been paid by Jesus!

Loving Father, how I praise and thank You for Your unparalleled love that sent Jesus to the cross to die so that I might be connected with You. Thank you for the open communication with You that is possible for me as Your child because Christ was willing to pay the debt of my sin.

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings (pennies), and not one of them is forgotten before God.

“Rainy, cold and dreary today,” the radio weather forecaster announced as I stood in front of my kitchen window, doing the mindless task of washing dishes. All the while I was rehearsing painful scenes from the past and feeling sorry for myself. The weather matched my mood perfectly.

My thoughts of self pity were broken when a flaming red cardinal swooped across the patio, right in front of my kitchen window. He was gorgeous, and free, and actually seemed to be enjoying that cold, dreary day. I was mesmerized as he hopped around the patio, flitted from the bench to the grill, then to the concrete floor. Watching his beauty and grace jolted my thinking right out of the pit and onto the greatness of the Almighty Creator. A God powerful enough to speak the entire universe into existence, and yet caring enough to know every movement of each tiny little bird, is certainly capable of handling my problems. My self pity vanished.

Then just as quickly as he came, the cardinal flew across the lawn and off to the neighbor’s back yard. I watched him as long as I could see him, and I thought to myself, “I hope my neighbor’s standing by her kitchen window. She just might need a reminder that things aren’t really so bad.”

God in Heaven, how I thank You for sending sweet reminders of Your greatness when things seem dark and dreary.

And He said, “My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.”

It’s vacation time! Now that schools are out, people are packing their bags and leaving home for those precious days away from full schedules and the normal routine, and heading to the beach, the mountains, or the homes of relatives.

In Old Testament days, many people believed that their gods only had power over certain geographic territories. Beyond those boundaries, they could not hear or act on behalf of the people. For those who traveled or moved away from a specific region, their gods could not go with them.

What an awesome thought that my God is not limited by time or space! Knowing that He is present with me at all times is a great comfort. It means that in every city, county, state, country, and on every continent, God is there. His power to guide, comfort, protect and provide for me never changes. I don’t have to worry about ever getting outside of His reach when I go on vacation!

But knowing that God is with me at all times, can also be a great deterrent to living carelessly. It seems that some folks think, “When I’m away from home, I can go places and do things I wouldn’t ordinarily do as a Christian. Nobody knows me so I can do whatever I want and it’s OK.” No it’s not! Others will see and be affected by your testimony even if they don’t know you; but most importantly God will see and know. Don’t take a vacation from living for Him!

God, You are so great! Thank You that no matter where I go You will be there with me. Help me always to live in every place the same, reflecting Your love and holiness.

. . . He heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Here in the U.S. this weekend is set aside to honor the brave men and women who have served in the armed services and fought for our country. We remember the living and dead, those who served in years gone by, and those who currently wear the uniform of the United States military.

In all the busyness of everyday life, it’s easy for those of us here at home to forget to pray for the men and women who are serving our country in more than difficult circumstances right at this very moment. And even when we do remember to ask God to watch over and protect them we often fail to express our gratitude to them for their willingness to defend our country’s freedoms.

A little poem puts it this way:

God and a soldier all people adore
In time of war, but not before;
And when war is over and all things are righted,
God is neglected and an old soldier is slighted.

Here is a link to a brief video clip that provides us with a way to say “thank you” to our soldiers whenever we have a chance: www.gratitudecampaign.org/shortmovie.php. It’s worth the few minutes of your time to watch it.

As you celebrate Memorial Day weekend, please take time to pray for our troops. Remember their families here at home and do something kind for those you know personally. Make this weekend truly a time of remembering and saying “Thank You,” to the Lord, and to those who have served or are currently serving to protect our great nation.

Blessed Lord, we lift our voices in praise and prayer for the many men and women who are valiantly defending our nation’s freedoms. We pray for their protection and an awareness of Your presence to be with them each hour of each day. We remember their families here at home and ask You to bless and keep them as well. We lift up to you those who were injured and are living with disabilities. God, we ask You to honor each one who has ever served our military forces.

Hull, Administrative Assistant at Christian Counseling & Educational Services.

Psalm 119:18
Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Thy law. (NAS)

It was a sunny, crisp spring morning as she stepped out the back door with multiple tasks circling her thoughts - the items to be purchased at the store, the people to call, work waiting to be accomplished. And then, she stopped because just breaking through the ground . . . there they were.

He gave them to her for her birthday many years ago, but she still remembers that precious moment. It was spring, and he knew that she really loved flowers. And it really WAS spring, not only in season, but in their relationship, and in their lives.

So much had happened in the years since she planted them! After he passed away, the emptiness was deafening, but she knew that no matter how hard it would be, she must go forward with life. It is what God wants everyone to do. But for the moment, a lifetime of memories returned. The fun and laughter, the good and the bad – seeing the flowers brought them all back.

Perhaps you are like this lady–going forward, or trying to, and then, there are the “flowers,” that bring back your grief. Probably all of us have had this kind of moment. The names, the situations and the “flowers” are all different, but the response is the same.

In the Psalms, God used David, a man who understood some things about going forward, to write these words:

My soul cleaves to the dust; revive me according to Thy Word. (Psalm 119:25 NAS)

My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to Thy Word. (Psalm 119:28 NAS)

This is my comfort in my affliction, that Thy Word has revived me. (Psalm 119:50 NAS)

In your moments of sorrow, come, collapse in His presence, stop and fall at His feet, and listen to the words that your Heavenly Father wants to use to revive, strengthen, and comfort you.

Heavenly Father, may Your presence and Your Word completely surround us today as we go forward.

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. *(NIV)

As we celebrate Mother’s Day here in the United States, we pause to remember, honor and thank God for mothers. They have an awesome job! A mother comforts, guides, instructs, encourages and comes along side to help. She’s a chauffeur, a cook, a coach, a disciplinarian, and a whole lot more. Being a mom requires wearing many different hats, but most women are good at that.

One of a mother’s most important jobs is that of teaching, and she does that in many different ways. First of all she teaches with her words. A mother instructs and gives directions on everything from how to play games, to how to do laundry and clean the bathroom, to where to catch the bus, or what to look for in a life mate. While she may often wonder if her children hear anything she says, a mom’s words are definitely important.

She also teaches her children indirectly by putting them in the care of other responsible adults in schools, in clubs and activities, and in church. This should be done prayerfully, being careful to choose, as much as is possible, folks who will guide them in the same way she would.

But a mother teaches most powerfully by her example. Recently a mother smiled as she said to me, “My little three-year old daughter is by my side every minute and she does everything I do!” Later in our conversation she asked me, “How can I get my daughter to be kind and loving, and treat people with respect?” I replied, “You already know the answer to that. You just told me she does everything you do-so do it yourself and she will follow.” A child learns most from what he or she sees modeled by the parents in day to day living.

Yes, mothers teach every day, even if it’s as one lady told me, “My mother taught me what NOT to do! I never wanted to be like her.” That’s sad, but it shows the powerful impact a mother has as she attempts to guide her children toward adulthood and the ability to make wise choices. It’s an awesome task, alright, but with God’s help she can do it!

Lord God, thank you for the mothers around the world who are seeking to teach their children to walk in Your ways. Please bless them with strength, wisdom and courage, and reward them for their diligence.

But my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Without warning or prelude, Elijah the prophet appeared suddenly on the pages of scripture in I Kings 17. In obedience to God’s command, Elijah boldly declared God’s wrath before wicked King Ahab and announced that there would be no rain, nor dew for three years upon ungodly Israel. Then the prophet left following God’s warning to flee to the wilderness and hide by the brook Cherith.

God used the weeks that followed as a time of training and instruction for His special spokesman, all the while demonstrating His faithfulness. There Elijah found safety and repose. He drank from the brook, and God directed the ravens to bring bread and meat to Elijah every morning and evening. It was for the prophet a place of protection and provision of all that he needed in those days.

My friend, you can be sure of one thing . . . if like Elijah you obediently follow God’s direction for your life, He will supply your every need. There is no need that goes unnoticed, no end to what He can do, and no shortage of any resource in His supply. He is God and He is faithful!

Father, when I’m prone to doubt or wonder if You really know and will supply my needs, help me to remember what you did for Elijah in his hour of danger and despair. May I trust You to show Yourself strong in every situation.
