The Foundation center began as the Foundation center Library
in New York City in 1956. It was meant as a " strategic gathering place
for knowledge about foundations." In 1956, all of their resources would
have been print resources (books). The Foundation Center still does publish
books. We have several here at the Main Library. The majority of Foundation
Center books that we have are Reference Books. In other words, you can use them
here at the Main Library. However, you can't take them home with you. We do
have many books on Grants and Grant writing that you can check out however.
Today, the Foundation Center is an enormous database that has information on
Grants, Grant Makers, and the Recipients of Grants. If you have any further
questions or would like to schedule a 30-40 minute overview of the Foundation
Center Resources, please contact me, Malcolm Hale, at halem@ccpl.org or (843)
805-6947.

In early September, The Foundation Center totally changed the way you use their database. Now, the Foundation Center uses a natural language interface. You tell the database what you type of project you are hoping to fund. Then, The Foundation Center uses the information to search the vast array of resources in the database. In the past, the user had options such as Powersearch, Grantmaker Search and others. However, the interface was not particularly user friendly. To access the Foundation Center Resources here at the Main Library at 68 Calhoun St, go to the top floor and tell one of our staff members at the Reference Desk "I would like to use the Foundation Center please...". Then, that staff member will take you to one of our dedicated computers and enter a password to unlock the Foundation Center resources. If you would like to schedule a 30 minute one-on-one tutorial/overview on using the Foundation center resources, please contact Malcolm Hale at halem@ccpl.org or by phone at (843) 805-6947.

Advice for Nonprofits on Hiring the Next Great Fundraiser—Don’t Overlook Older Candidates

By Pamela Barden
npengage.com

I received an email the other day from a man who was in a
fundraising class I taught a few years ago. I remember well his enthusiasm for
fundraising as he planned to transition from a career in the aerospace industry
to the nonprofit arena. He was already an active volunteer and was passionate
about helping nonprofit organizations raise funds. That is what led him to my
class.

Today he has completed his education and volunteers with a
program for which he helped secure funding. But he has not yet been hired as a
fundraiser. Why? My sense is that many nonprofit organizations today want to
hire twentysomethings. After all, they know social media and can quickly build
an active presence on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, or whatever the latest
social media fad is.

When it comes to establishing a digital strategy, nonprofits
know by now that we need to grow our online audiences. A big part of that is
connecting to our communities through social networks like Facebook and
Twitter. But now that there is endless data we can monitor from all these
social channels, is your organization aware of what metrics are important to
track?

At NTEN’s 2017 Nonprofit Technology Conference, Debra
Askanase, founder and digital engagement strategist at Community Organizer 2.0,
held an informative session on advanced social media practices. The session
took social media management to the next level, focusing on what metrics
nonprofits should be focusing in on to help make decisions around online
engagement.

Three important questions that can help guide your
organization in what data should be valuable to track:

Does it inform our decisions?
Does it check our progress?
Does it show if we matter?

www.thebalance.com

Although grant proposals are far from a slam dunk or an
answer to a funding emergency, they do have a role to play in supporting most
charities. Grants, to be successful, should be part of your overall fundraising
plan, have their own calendar, and a dedicated grant writer, either on staff or
contracted.

Grants come from a variety of sources such as a foundation,
a corporation or a government agency, but most require similar information.

Here are the most common sections of grant proposals, and
the information you should include:

Admission is $5 and proceeds benefit the Charleston Parks
Conservancy.

Fresh Future Farm has taken over the leadership role of
managing Chicora Place Community Garden. The farm and Metanoia have also
reached an agreement to provide support for classes to occur at Fresh Future
Farm.

The garden sits between Orvid and Calvert streets at 3107
North Carolina Ave., within the Chicora/Cherokee Neighborhood of North
Charleston.

The city of North Charleston purchased the Community Garden,
a former trailer park, with greenbelt tax funds to create a recreation space in
the Chicora-Cherokee community. After receiving a $1,000 grant from the Healthy
North Charleston, Metanoia turned a portion of the space into a garden in 2011.
Germaine Jenkins was a Metanoia board member and a Clemson Extension master
gardener and resident garden volunteer.

This year, Metanoia has awarded a $23,000 grant to support
Fresh Future Farm’s efforts to manage the garden and host quarterly
Introduction to Home/Urban Gardening trainings at the farm a few blocks away.

Fresh Future Farm will coordinate volunteer groups to work
at the garden on the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon, and to
seek funding for the garden. The farm also hopes to create one or more paid
internships to take care of the space between monthly workdays and to add an
outdoor fitness center.

Charleston Library Society is hosting a series of Wide Angle
Lunches, with a theme for the year of Making Community. The lunches will be
from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. May 4, 11, 18 and 25. Individual tickets are $20 for
society members and $26 for nonmembers; season passes are available for $75 for
members and $95 for nonmembers.

The Glass Onion has selected Lowcountry Local First as the
featured charity for their monthly tasting, set for 5:30-7:30 tonight. The
event will include cocktails with Dixie Vodka paired with small bites, for $10
per person.

For every ticket sold, $5 will benefit Lowcountry Local
First, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit whose mission is to cultivate an economy anchored
in local ownership. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door.

Windwood Family Services is partnering with Dee Norton Child
Advocacy Center and Darkness to Light to raise awareness about child abuse
prevention and blanket the area with pinwheels during April, which is Child
Abuse Prevention Month.

During the month of April, look for pinwheel gardens all
around Charleston County as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Since 2008, the pinwheel has been the national symbol for
child abuse prevention, through the Pinwheels for Prevention campaign.

Windwood plans to place close to 2,000 pinwheels throughout
the Lowcountry, each one representing 10 children in our state who suffer from
abuse or neglect.

In addition, the city of Charleston will sign a proclamation
declaring Charleston a “Pinwheel City,” and the town of James Island will
present a proclamation at its April 20 meeting declaring April “Child Abuse
Prevention Month.”

Pinwheel gardens will be at these locations during the month
of April:

I’m thrilled to be doing a session with Aisha Moore and Gina
Schmeling at the NTEN NTC called “Technology Wellness in the Nonprofit
Workplace.” If you are attending the
NTC, please join us. The session is
designed to answer three questions:

Why does collaborative technology overload lead to loss of
nonprofit workplace productivity and what are the best practices to avoid it?
(Beth)
When does technology boost personal productivity for
nonprofit professionals and when does it get in the way? (Aisha)

What are some examples of technology and nonprofit case
studies that supports health, fitness, and wellness in the nonprofit workplace?
(Gina)

Nonprofit: Strategies for Impact without Burnout,” my co-author, Aliza Sherman
and I discussed the issue of effective personal use of technology, including
taking breaks, standing desks, and other tips geared for the individual. In the book, we also talk about technology
wellness in the nonprofit workplace, but I have been looking forward to an
opportunity to go deeper on how teams of people in nonprofits can avoid
technology overload caused by collaboration platforms and process. This connects very nicely to the leadership
development for emerging leaders that I’ve been working on lately. This blog post shares some thoughts.

Editor in chief of the Nonprofit Quarterly

Last week, White House budget chief Mick Mulvaney defended the Trump administration’s proposed deep cuts to social welfare programs. “Meals on Wheels sounds great,” Mulvaney said during a White House news briefing, before adding, “We’re not going to spend [money] on programs that cannot show that they actually deliver the promises that we’ve made to people.” (So, making sure that older people can eat as more of them age in place is not a fulfillment of a promise?)

That, and the revelation that the House version of a proposal that would rewrite the Affordable Care Act has been fashioned to place the aging (from 50 on) and the poor at most risk, has riveted the public’s attention to the targeting of a growing aged and aging population, which is being unfortunately layered atop nonprofits already struggling with systemic weaknesses.

This special report from Giving USA, “Giving and the Golden Years,” is not so much about giving as it is about the financial stability—or, rather, the lack thereof—of aging services nonprofits. This report becomes extraordinarily important in light of several factors:
[Recently], the news industry made some news itself when the nonprofit Poynter Institute released information about an $881,000 grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to strengthen local journalism with a focus on digital and cultural transformation. Charged with building on conclusions from an initial program last year, the Poynter Local News Innovation Program will be open to up to 20 news organizations “of varying sizes, geographies and ownership models” per year over three years with content and training provided through online platforms and in-person workshops and seminars. The Poynter program is part of a larger collaboration between Knight and the Lenfest Institute for Journalism called the Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative. In a statement, Jennifer Preston, Knight Foundation vice president for journalism, said the program, “recognizes the importance of a concerted, strategic effort to address the challenges that local news organizations are facing in the digital age.” She added, “This next phase will help to create a model for the digital transformation of news organizations that can be shared across the country, helping local journalists better connect with their audiences and develop new innovations in storytelling.”

The population of Americans older than age 65 is expected to reach 98.2 billion by 2060, about double the U.S. Census Bureau estimate for 2015. Aging services organizations (ASOs) have plenty of catching up to do in the meantime as such organizations currently lag in both number and resources.

This compares to 24.5 percent, the number of American households currently headed by someone age 65 or older. The location of such services is also of potential issue. “Retirement states” such as Florida, Arizona, Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina all rank in the bottom quarter of states in terms of ASOs per capita. Great Plains states such as Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota rank near the top.

Columbia, SC -- Columbia will be this year's host city for the 2017
SC Nonprofit Summit and it's just around the corner. The Summit is the SC
Association of Nonprofit Organizations' (SCANPO) annual conference where
hundreds of nonprofit leaders and business partners come together to share
ideas and network.

The event will be
held at the Downtown Marriott from March 6-8 and is SC’s largest nonprofit
professional gathering. SCANPO will also celebrate its 20th anniversary at the
Columbia Museum of Arts during the annual conference. “The main purpose of the
Nonprofit Summit is to bring together nonprofits from across the state to
engage in thoughtful discussions related to new opportunities, trends and
celebrations within our state’s nonprofit sector,” explained Madeleine McGee,
president of SCANPO. “Hosting the Summit in Columbia is fitting because we will
be celebrating a huge milestone for our organization. Columbia is where it all
started for our association.”

The three-day Summit includes in-depth workshops, plenary
sessions, site visits to local nonprofits and more than 60 breakout sessions
focused on operations, communications, advocacy, fundraising, leadership,
community impact and more. Over 100 nonprofit professionals will be presenting
during the conference. Rhett Mabry, president of the Duke Endowment, and Tom
Keith, president of the Sisters of Charity Foundation of SC, are currently
serving as co-chairs for the event and leading the efforts to oversee the
program. They are supported by the Summit’s steering committee, which is
comprised of nonprofit leaders throughout the state.

“The Summit is the only professional conference in South
Carolina that is created for nonprofit leaders by nonprofit leaders,” said
Keith. “It provides us with an opportunity to come together as the state’s
nonprofit community.” “Being together as a group allows us to challenge
ourselves and to energize our sector so we can build upon the incredible work we
are doing within our local communities.” Registration and details for the event
are available at summit.scanpo.org.
