Tokyo Sky Tree - a bradcasting, restaurant, and also observation tower is currently under construction, scheduled to be completed by the end of next year, with the public opening in the spring of 2012.

It is located in-between Asakusa - downtown Tokyo and Ryogoku - famous for sumo wrestling.
As of March 29th, 2010 it is the tallest tallest artificial structure in Japan.
When completed, the tower is designed to be 634.00 m (2,080 ft).

Even though it is still under construction, Tokyo Sky Tree is already a popular spot for tourists because it will be a rare view in the future to see it under construction. Some crazy fan even moved into a building nearby in order to take a picture of the tower getting taller everyday.
As you may know Japan is famous for Karaoke.

In my opinion, people from overseas do not sing in front of others
if they know they can't sing.
But in Japan, it is not humiliating to sing at Karaokes no matter
how bad you are. Most of the times I hear terrible singers from other rooms
when I go to Karaoke. But that's alright. Japanese Karaokes are all separated in private rooms so you can sing without thinking about what others think.
Everybody has a fun time.

I just took a friend from Uganda to Japanese karaoke and he really liked it
so let me share how we do it in Japan.
Normally you'd go with friends, girlfriends boyfriends, in a group of 2-4 people. I'd say the average singing time is 2 hours. If it seems not enough when the time comes, we extend an hour if there isn't anybody on the waiting list.
Most karaoke also has a "Free time" where you can drink and sing for as many hours you want during a certain time like from 12:00PM-8:00PM.

Sometimes when my friend and I want to talk somewhere quiet because restaurants are too loud, we'd just go in a karaoke room and talk privately and use it as a private lounge. There is also a large selection of food, snacks, and alcohol.

This is how the remote controllers look recently.
I don't know what kind of functions they have nowadays but they are getting bigger and bigger each time I come.

The sound system is getting better and better each year and no matter how bad
the singer is, it sounds pretty good with all the echoes and background vocals.

More and more English, Chinese, and Korean songs have been added to
the selection too so even those who can not speak Japanese can have a fun time too.

If you ever visit Japan please try it out.

Hello!

I don't have much to talk this week except I wanted to warn customers
about fake autographs sold on Yahoo! Auctions.

The 3 illustrations with autographs are all fake.

Please note that in most cases Yoshiyuki Sadamoto will write the date and name of the person giving the illustration to. (such as... To: Mana )

However for overseas events, he sometimes autographs on printed illustrations with no date or name. So not all are fake if it has no date or name.

But if you have bought one like the pictures above on Yahoo Auction, there is a large chance that it could be.
If you have ever visited Japan, you've probably encountered
our food samples at some point during your stay.

Not a lot of people knew food samples was a "Japanese thing"
until many foreigners showed interest in the food samples and
made them one of the most popular souvenirs.

Once I think about it, food samples are actually pretty neat.
They are displayed in showcases in front of restaurants to show the customers
a precise idea of how the food is served.
It's definitely better when you can get an image of what you are ordering.
I get surprised sometimes when I go overseas and see a menu with no
pictures, just described in words.

Food samples are made by professional food sample craftsmen.
As you can see, the colors, shine and softness are re-created in details.

Curry Rice

There is no point of spilling the ramen here but I chose this because the fluidity was so real.

Harajuku Crepes displayed in showcase. Samples for crepes are definitely necessary because Japanese-style crepes are wrapped and insides can not be seen.
Hina Aoyama is Japanese artist living in France. She is famous for her paper-cutting artwork.

In 2000, she took a trip to France where she met her now husband.
There, she meets traditional paper cutting artwork from Switzerland and starts cutting papers as a hobby.

In 2008 she exhibits her artwork at the 6th Paper Art Triennale International held at Charmey Museum in Switzerland and became the first Asian to win first prize.

2 of her artworks will be displayed at Bellerive Museum in Zurich until April 4th, 2010.

She was also chosen as one of the 100 Most Respected Japanese People in the World on Newsweek magazine last year.

Believe it or not, she cut all these out from paper with a pair of scissors.
I found a list of top 10 popular dogs in Japan.
Popular dog breeds in Japan changes every couple years.
In my opinion, the trends are mostly influenced by dogs appearing T.V. commercials.

To be honest, I am not really a dog-person myself.
Probably because I was grown up always having a cat in my house and never
got the chance to fall in love with dogs. But I really wish that my cat would
react to me like how dogs love their bosses because my cat completely ignores me.
Okay so here is the list...
I wonder what breeds are popular in other countries.

1: Poodle, Toy Poodle (Germany, France)
2: Chihuahua (Mexico)
3: Dachshund (Germany)
4: Miniature Dachshund (Germany)
5: Pomeranian (Germany, Poland)
6: Papillon (Spain, Belgium, France)
7: Shih Tzu (China)
8: French Bulldog (England)
9: Shiba Inu (Japan)
10: Miniature Schnauzer (Germany)

Wow tea cup poodles are so cute. They'll make anyone's heart melt in a flash.

Hello

So I'm sorry that this turned out to be a late article for Valentine's day!!

I should have posted this article last week but I was actually on
vacation last Friday and my colleague updated the article for me.

I've already written about the Japanese customs for Valentine's day for last year's post so I'm going to skip that part.

This year, I looked for some unique chocolates which should stand out from
normal ones.

Tool Chocolate

Nice present for carpenter boyfriend or husband.

Chocolate Spoon

Just stir warm milk with this spoon and will turn into chocolate milk.
Just make sure to wipe your chocolate-melted fingers!

Medicine Chocolate

Not a chocolate-flavored medicine. It's real chocolate in a medicine-like bottle. For those who needs cure for getting sick from love.

Potato Chip Chocolate

This one is the only one that I've ever actually ate and I can say one thing.
Potato chips and chocolate match!! Not just matching, they are meant for each other. A whole new discovery. At first the thought of those 2 combinations
sounded awful. But everyone I've recommended this have fell in love with this.
I was riding the train this morning and realized there are
certain rules here which I thought might help if anyone
has a chance to ride a Japanese train.

*Fold Newspapers
When reading a newspaper in the train, it is polite to fold it down
just enough to see the column you are reading. Do not spread out the
full-size paper because it will touch the people around you.

*Don't Eat
There are people who eat on the train but not many.
Especially food with a strong smell should NOT be eaten on the train.
But yes, we have some tired business men with a can beer eating some snacks
on the train.

*No Make Up
This is actually not something I should say to people from overseas because
this is only done by Japanese girls. Young girls use their commuting time to finish up their makeup. Adults think it is very bad manners to show yourself fixing makeup in public.

*No Phones
I think this rule has been followed by most Japanese. If anyone talks on the phone in the train, it's either a young kid who doesn't care, or someone having a very important business call. Most people don't seem to have a problem with this rule. Everybody, I mean 80% of the people riding the train are either texting, watching TV on cell-phone, or doing games with Nintendo DS.

*Wait Before Getting In
When the train stops at the station,
step aside to either the right or left and always let people getting off come out first before going in.

*How to Handle Rush Hours
People will slide in at the last moment and will also try to open up the shutting doors at rush hours. Business men can not wait for the next train to come in 3 min. They have to be there on time.
People will jump into a insanely packed train. If you can not get in, the station staff will come running and push you inside.
What you need to remember here is everyone gets squashed, pushed and everybody is very very uncomfortable. Still, no one yells or gets mad. It's just how rush hour is. The train is still very quiet.

*Keep Legs Together
I've also noticed that men from overseas tend to spread their legs out wide apart. I understand because they have long legs and they can't help it.
But whenever they do that, most Japanese avoids sitting next to them because
they can't tell a big guy to shut their legs. It is a little hard for us Japanese to go sit next to someone like that.

So if anyone is wondering why no one sits next to you, even if the train is crowded, perhaps this might be the reason.

Anyway, I hope this would be a little tip on how to ride a train in Japan.

See you next week.
