It follows a revision made by the British Standards Institution (BSI) for its ISO 9001:2008, which will no longer be valid from September 2018.

All ISO standards are reviewed every five years to establish if a revision is required to keep it current and relevant for the marketplace.

Organisations are granted a three-year transition period. CDW’s original timescales were to achieve a successful transition by year end 2017 and prior to the September 2018 deadline. But, following a rigorous vetting process, CDW has already been recommended by BSI for an upgrade.

The recently introduced Air Pollution Control regulation has been imposed to eliminate coal usage and reduce the emissions of almost every other pollutant across 28 cities.

As part of this, the government has imposed targets to cut industrial metals production including aluminium.

Although aluminium is considered a ‘green’ building material, many older and smaller production facilities in the cities source their power from coal, the main target of China’s anti-pollution initiative.

As a result, China is forcing aluminium smelters to cut outputs by 30 per cent over the winter heating season (November – March), with estimates that the cuts will mean the loss of 2.71 million tonnes of aluminium.

China is the world’s largest producer of aluminium and it is anticipated the new environmental regulations will impact supply-demand dynamics, sending shockwaves through the global supply chain.

The news has already seen a hike in global aluminium prices. On the London Metal Exchange, aluminium hit a near two-year high of $1,957 per tonne.

HS2 would be the second high-speed rail link in Britain after High Speed 1, which connects London to the Channel Tunnel, and is due for completion in 2033.

A report by KPMG says the new rail project could boost the UK economy by £15bn a year and will create 22,000 construction jobs in the next five years.

Mike Davis, Managing Director of specialist aluminium fabricator CDW Systems, says new commercial and residential projects on, and around the rail line, could provide a big boost to the aluminium sector.

He comments: “HS2 is set to provide a big boost for the aluminium sector as specifiers on projects around the rail-line look to aluminium as the material of choice. We’ve already received feedback from customers who are being asked for quotes on commercial and residential projects, linked to the development.”

Whilst Mike praises the government’s investment in HS2, he questions why it doesn’t invest in other big infrastructure projects, while interest rates are low.

He comments: “Base interest rates are at an all-time low of 0.25% and have been around this mark for the past five years, meaning that this period would be the perfect time for government to borrow money for more big infrastructure projects. Cuts have been made to investments in schools and hospitals but not why invest in these sectors and create jobs and supply side benefits?”

One industry stalwart that has done just this – and is set to be a quarter of a century old in February – is Gloucester based aluminium specialist CDW Systems.

The achievement of reaching twenty-five years of trading follows a record end to 2016 which saw group turnover increase by 19% and hit £10m for the first time in its history.

Formed in 1992 CDW has always been passionate about championing the use of aluminium in building.

Whilst it has consistently seen success in the commercial market, the fabricator has witnessed the rise and fall of residential aluminium windows – following the PVCu boom in the 1980s – and its recent revival in the domestic market.

In response to this, CDW has partnered with leading aluminium systems companies to launch new products that help installers differentiate themselves in this competitive market.

Coinciding with its 25 years in business, CDW has launched Reynaers aluminium lift and slide patio doors sets, aimed at the high-end of the residential door market.

Along with new products, 2017 will bring several changes to the business and its operations.

Planning is underway to expand CDW’s Gloucester-based factory to accommodate increasing demand for its fabricated products.

CDW Systems teamed with long-standing customer Bournemouth Glass & Glazing to complete the project at the luxurious Sandbanks peninsula, which saw Bournemouth Glass & Glazing install four aluminium doors in one of the properties backing onto the beach.

Bournemouth Glass & Glazing installed three Smarts Visoglide patio doors at the rear of the building – one as a replacement to an existing door and two as part of a kitchen extension. The installer also fitted a SAPA aluminium entrance door leading to the new kitchen.

Building works on the extension began on (date) and Bournemouth Glass & Glazing spent two days installing the doors, with the overall project taking six weeks to complete.

Bournemouth Glass & Glazing has been in business for 30 years, installing PVC-u and aluminium windows and doors. The company primarily operates in the new-build market where a typical installation can include up to £1.5m worth of glass.

Jerry Webb, Managing Director of CDW Systems, has come on record stating business leaders should cut through the hysteria and instead inspire action.

He comments: “As someone who’s been in business for more than 30 years, and has been running a business for more than 20 years, I’m already fed-up with the post-Brexit political posturing and media frenzy.

“It is uncertainty and lack of willingness to invest that causes a recession. What we need as a country, and as an industry, is strong leadership and a decision to be made asap regarding the future of this country and its role within the EU.

“At the moment, there is a vacuum of leadership at the highest level with political kingpins falling like a pack of cards. If we’re not careful, this will filter across to the markets and also seep into our industry.”

Jerry goes on to say that in the event of a negative outcome businesses need to retain optimism if we are to keep the economy – and the industry – ticking over.

He comments: “Failing a resolution and return to normality we could start to see every part of our economy negatively affected. However, we need to remember that the UK has a huge domestic market and for companies that don’t export it needs to be business as usual.

“And for those braver souls that export beyond our shores, there also needs to be a realisation that Article 50 has yet to be signed and as it stands – for right or wrong – we’re still a fully-fledged member of the EU.

“In conclusion, now is not the time for doom-mongering or plain lies. We need to focus all our energy on ensuring that as business leaders we provide the hope and the leadership that will keep the economy moving, employers employing and suppliers supplying”
