Portland, Oregon — May 7, 2013 — Cedexis, the leading global SaaS platform for Big Data optimization of website and mobile application availability and performance, today announced substantial momentum in the US market. Expanded US programs have yielded both high-profile customers and industry recognition as the leading benchmark of Cloud and CDN performance measurement, and as a key enabler of Cloud, data center and multi-CDN global load balancing.

Cedexis, an established European brand with more than 350 customers worldwide, expanded its US marketing and sales efforts in mid-2012, resulting in significant uptake by important US brands, in addition to continued growth in Europe. New customers in the US include: Exponential (Tribal Fusion), Gilead Sciences, LinkedIn, Meteor Entertainment, Microsoft Atlas, Mozilla, NBC News, Tango and Zedo. These brands join Cedexis’ well known European accounts, including, Canal+, L’Equipe, Nissan, LeMonde, Volkswagen and Yves Rocher.

“Adoption by significant new accounts is the best affirmation that our solution is meeting a real, pressing market need,” said Robert Malnati, Vice President of Marketing at Cedexis. “We believe Internet performance isn’t a characteristic of an individual CDN or Cloud provider, but the result of the intelligent orchestration of many Clouds and CDNs. We are thrilled with our momentum in the US market, as we seek to improve the performance of the Internet for every end user, everywhere around the globe.”

Cedexis customers share a common need to provide their end users with outstanding website and mobile application performance, wherever in the world they might be. Cedexis solutions provide monitoring via Cedexis Radar, a free community that uses crowdsourcing to deliver unprecedented visibility into Cloud and CDN performance, from the end-user perspective, by measuring interactions over 1 billion times a day. Monitoring, Usage and Costs data sources, including Radar’s real end user measurements (RUM) and 3rd party data ingested through Cedexis Fusion, are used to inform adaptive load balancing provided by Cedexis Openmix. Openmix is Cedexis’ paid Cloud SaaS product that uses real-time data to dynamically route website and mobile application traffic, around outages and service degradations, to improve performance across the globe.

Cedexis efforts in the US have also been acknowledged by its March 2013 recognition in CIO.com as one of “10 Hot Cloud Startups to Watch.” Cedexis has also been selected to present, in May 2013, at “Under the Radar,” the Silicon Valley’s premier innovation showcase. Cedexis is one of just 20 top companies presenting at the conference, which showcases startups that are building truly innovative products and who are likely to be the next Jive, Yammer or Dropbox.

These acknowledgments add to Cedexis’ 2013 and 2012 awards in Europe, including: “2013 New Talent Award” from SFR, “Top 25” award from the Cloud & Big Data Summit organized by the European Association TechTour, an award from EuroCloud France as the “Best Cloud Startup 2012,” and a Silver Medal for “Best Cloud Startup in Europe 2012” from EuroCloud Congress. Also in 2012, Cedexis received an “Innovation Award” from Syntec/Ernst & Young.

About Cedexis

Founded in 2009 by Marty Kagan and Julien Coulon, two veterans of the web hosting and content delivery markets, Cedexis optimizes web performance across data centers, content delivery networks (CDNs) and Clouds for companies that want to ensure 100% availability and extend their reach to new global markets. With Cedexis, companies can comparatively assess worldwide Cloud performance and availability data to make informed vendor selection and costs-and-performance trade offs. Cedexis also provides automation for dynamically optimizing traffic across Clouds, datacenters and CDNs to dynamically match the best-performing resource with local demand. Since revenue conversions and brand experience are directly tied to online performance, media, retail and consumer brand companies rely on Cedexis to ensure 100% availability, fast page loads, downloads and transactions to drive traffic and revenue at lower cost and risk. Cedexis is headquartered in Portland, Oregon and Paris, France with offices in San Francisco, California, Chicago, Illinois and London, UK, and sales representatives in Germany, Japan, Israel and Brazil.

For the third consecutive year, telco giant SFR announced the 10 companies included in the “SFR Young Talent Start Up” contest, 2013 edition. This program offers young companies the opportunity to benefit from the support of SFR and enables SFR to be involved with early stage digital innovations. This project is part of the open innovation initiative launched by SFR in 2006.

Through the Young Talent Start Up contest SFR selects 10 start ups to support. SFR connects each company with its network of internal and external experts and partners, to provide technical know-how, marketing and sales guidance. The project’s mission is to accelerate the growth of these companies. Focused on the digital revolution that is permeating our everyday life, the start ups chosen this year target on line payments, multi-channel solutions, customer relations “2.0″ and the performance and quality of telecom networks and services.

“Cedexis looks forward to engaging with the SFR teams in the coming months and strengthening our collaboration with the objective of improving the performance of Internet content publishers everywhere” stated Julien Coulon, co-founder of Cedexis, after the event.

Act Locally

Many applications require each HTTP request, from a particular client, be directed to the same server or cloud instance. This is called session persistence and is common with web applications that do not share application “state” between back-end servers or data stores.

In the past, this has been solved using local Load Balancers such as those provided by F5 or Brocade or more recently with the Elastic Load Balancer from Amazon. However, as application architects look to serve a global audience and deploy their applications to multiple data centers it becomes necessary to ensure session persistence at a global and local level.

Think Globally

In a previous post we discussed the trend towards “active-active” application design. Active-active applications can serve any request, from any visitor from any data center at any time. End users maybe directed to a new data center mid session. However, some applications rely on real-time personalization data that may be slow to synchronize across data centers. In this case, while it is possible to bounce a user between data centers mid-session, the end user may temporarily see slower performance or have a less personalized experience while the back-ends transfer data.

Examples of this type of application include Ad networks which use real-time data on our web surfing habits to determine which impression will be most relevant to us. Certain gaming applications may similarly use recent interactions to enhance game play.

Switching Costs

In essence, this type of application pays a “switching cost” anytime a particular end-user requests a response from a new data center. Obviously, end-users for whom one of the available choices is clearly faster should be directed to the “best” data center. But what if performance from their ISP to the original data center starts to degrade?

Ideally we’d want a threshold based on each application’s unique business needs. This threshold would ensure we’d only switch data centers if the performance data is very compelling or the initial data center is unable to process the request.

Tie Breakers

Of greater concern are end-users for whom two or more data center choices are tied from a Radar performance perspective. The worst thing a GSLB could do would be to “flap”: sending the end user to multiple destinations over the course of a single visitor session. What we need is a way to break the ties in a consistent way that ensures an even distribution across data centers.

Consistent Hashing through Application Defined Load Balancing

Cedexis Openmix is flexible enough to handle this use case by combining Radar performance data with the consistent hashing algorithm devised at MIT in the 1990′s. Customers can let Radar determine which of their data centers are going to be least latent for visitors from each ISP. For example, lets imagine a customer has two data centers: one in Chicago and another in Dallas.

Some web visitors will clearly be better off going to Chicago while others will be routed to Dallas. This is easily accomplished with our standard “Optimal Round Trip Time” Openmix application. But what about ISPs located half way (in an Internet sense) between those locations? Using a variance threshold, customers can define exactly what constitutes a “tie”. By implementing one of the many consistent hashing implementations available Openmix can ensure ties are always broken the same way. This should provide the benefits of Radar performance routing while maintaining session persistence.

We’ve created an example implementation. Give it a whirl!

Cedexis, the leading global SaaS platform for optimizing website and web application availability and performance, today announced the availability of Cedexis Fusion. Cedexis Fusion integrates data from third party software, hardware and network monitoring tools, in addition to CDN and Cloud usage data, to enable a wide range of performance, availability and costs-for-performance traffic shaping.

For the first time, enterprises can make their investments in reporting and monitoring solutions actionable to improve the performance of their websites and web applications in real time. Fusion integrates the data into the Cedexis Openmix platform to load balance traffic to the most available, best performing or least costs-for-performance resources. Cedexis Fusion compliments Cedexis Radar, Cedexis’s crowd-sourced real end user Cloud and CDN performance measurement data. The combination of Radar and Fusion provides comprehensive visibility into Big Data metrics on all the application, server, platform and network elements that can affect real end user web experiences.

A wide range of pre-built integrations are available immediately, including New Relic and AppDynamics application performance monitoring software; Akamai, Level3, Edgecast and ChinaCache CDNs; SoftLayer’s server management data, and many others.

“So many systems produce volumes of Big Data, but making that data real time actionable has been difficult or impossible. Fusion allows customer to make their monitoring investments really pay off, accessing all of their Big Data metrics, to improve website performance and automating the process of reacting to data” explains Greg Unrein, VP of Product Management of Cedexis.

“Cedexis Fusion is more than a data aggregator. It is the point of convergence of all the real time Big Data streams that feed our cloud-based global load balancer – Cedexis Openmix. Fusion customers have a single place to define how they wish to detect and avoid Internet congestion and service disruptions to achieve 100% service availability,” said Unrein.

Customers wishing to further innovate may use Cedexis Fusion Custom to automate the ingestion of private data streams from any HTTP source. Cedexis customers have created a range of applications including: green energy sensitivity, least costs routing and incorporation of private measurements they take of their own systems. In all cases, Cedexis customers are finding ways to make real-time Big Data, real time actionable, and they are sharing these applications with the Cedexis community.

Fusion is immediately available to Cedexis customers through the Cedexis portal.
