As I was looking at the Red Carpet pictures from the Screen Actors Guild Awards, I saw that some of the celebrities had great looks in their formal wear and some definitely missed the mark. One disastrous look was the dress worn by Jane Krakowski from “30 Rock”. It reminded me of Anatomy and Physiology class and someone had already made the chest incision for dissection! The whole concept of a beaded chest plate that is surrounded by a sharply angled black dress was very distracting to say the least.

Another “miss” was Jonah Hill, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in “Moneyball”, he is a good sized guy and he looked like he had borrowed the tux that he was wearing from his younger brother. For his photo op, his tux looked tight over the chest, arms, and especially for the midsection. The basic look of the navy tux with a white button down shirt and slim tie would have been perfectly fine if he had made sure it was a good fit. No matter what size you are, if you have clothes that fit you correctly, it is a “win-win”.

The last one that didn’t turn my head was Busy Phillps in her multi-directional blue design dress, which looked like something you would find in grandma’s attic. If she had any kind of figure under there, you would never know it! It was just too busy and not the least bit flattering on a beautiful woman.

Now, on the up-swing was Kyle Chandler from the former “Friday Night Lights”. He looked fantastic in his black tux with satin lapels and he is one of those guys who never seems to age, which is really annoying. Kyle’s dark features and five o’clock shadow are what give the ladies whiplash when he passes by. Also, Eric Stonestreet from “Modern Family” added some whimsy to a sometimes boring basic black tux with his multi-colored polka dot bowtie and pocket square. Bravo Eric!

Last in my list of “goods” was Octavia Spencer from “The Help”. She was simply elegant and voluptuous in her silvery grey, lace top gown that had softly flowing gathers from her waist to her ankles. To sum it up all in one word, “Stunning!”

Dunhill has been an iconic luxury men’s label since 1893. The company play an important part in the heritage of the fashionable British gentleman, producing everything from bespoke tailored suits, men’s designer accessories and high quality leather products to butane cigarette lighters and cigars.

When Alfred Dunhill himself was just 21, he inherited his father’s saddlery business. Deciding to convert it into Dunhill Motorities, he began selling fine car accessories such as leather driving gloves and goggles. From his small shop on Euston Road, a brand was born.

Dunhill went on to design classic writing pens as well as supplying pipes and tobacco to the gentlemen’s clubs in London. His own Rollagas lighters became a must-have within the world of celebrity during the 1950s and ‘60s following the gunmetal model used by character James Bond in Dr. No which later led to the production of dunhill brand-name cigarettes.

Since then dunhill has become a world class manufacturer of iconic time pieces and golf accessories – a name continuously associating itself with vintage elegance and charm.

Today, the brand has seen a reinvention which brought dunhill into the world of contemporary high fashion. Tailor Richard James of Saville row was invited along with a watchmaker, a leather-smith and a designer to become part of the dunhill family in order to revitalise the label as a byword for luxury menswear. Today dunhill sells a wide range of designer fashions including cufflinks, designer shirts and leather luggage – pretty much everything a modern gentleman’s wardrobe might need.

The exquisite classic pieces epitomise the ‘extraordinary’ gent and cultivate a lifestyle of decadence. Dunhill’s stores are renowned for their indulgent in-house spas and wine cellars.

Though Jude Law has been granted the role as the face of dunhill, the recent launch of their Voice campaign has seen explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Sir David Frost lending their names to the company. Dunhill promotes that achievement; skill and drive are what define the masculinity and affluence which Dunhill so consciously represent.

With creative director, Kim Jones at the helm, Dunhill is ever expanding its line of chic men’s clothing and slick accessories. Dunhill’s exclusive stylish leather briefcases, vintage-look watches and sleek suits are worthy investments adding a touch of distinction to any man’s wardrobe. Dunhill grant an unrivalled sophistication and charisma with every unique piece. It’s not just about the look, it’s about the attitude.

Originally developed in the 1930’s by the Bausch & Lomb Company, the larger framed sunglasses are characterized by darker or reflective lenses, which cover more of the eye area than a lot of sunglasses. The Ray Ban Aviators have been seen in movies from years past, as well as in present day celebrity fashion. It has really grown in popularity since the 1960’s and seems to never wane in the world of fashion.

The advantages of this type of eyewear is that the metal frame allows it some flexibility, so when they are eventually sat on, like the fate of all sunglasses at one time or another, you have the chance of bending them back into their original shape, unlike their plastic counterparts, which have the tendency to snap under pressure.

The larger coverage over the eye area is good in more ways than one. It prevents any light from entering around the perimeter of the glasses, which shields your eyes from the damage that the sun can do to your eyes, as well as protecting the skin around your eyes from damaging rays and “squinting wrinkles”.

Another good reason to wear the aviator glasses is that they are hot! The darker shaded lenses or mirrored style give the wearer an air of mystery about them. You never quite know where the person’s eyes are looking. It can be a tool for seeing what you don’t want others to know that you are looking at.

At hisunglasses.com, I found a nice selection of designer aviator sunglasses, at very good prices. Ray Ban has a classic aviator for about $120 and Diesel makes a slightly more squared version called “Chakra S” for $135. Tom Ford, who dressed Johnny Depp at the Globes, has several unisex styles in traditional metal and also resin for under $300. Even Burberry and Dolce & Gabbana get in on the trend with their own stylish versions for $200 and under.

Since eyewear has grown into a year-round accessory, not just for summer only anymore, make sure you get yours aviators before the warm weather rush!

British fashion designer Sir Paul Smith has been carving a reputation as a commercial menswear designer for over three decades.

The Nottinghamshire born businessman left school at 15 with dreams of being a racing cyclist. Unfortunately for Smith, a biking accident at 17 put an end to his childhood ambition instead pulling his life towards an unexpected turn. It was then that the foundations of a fashion empire were born.

Devastated by the incident, Smith made some unlikely contacts during a stint in hospital which gave him the opportunity to pave the way for a new pursuit. The company that we see today is a finely tuned machine with Smith still sitting comfortably at the helm.

Developing as a tailor during the late sixties, he was assisted by his then-girlfriend, Pauline Denyer, a fashion graduate at RCA before he was eventually spotted by Lincroft Kilgour chairman Harold Tillman.

By 1970, Smith had opened his own boutique on Byard Lane in Nottingham, married Pauline and his menswear collection hit the catwalk at Paris fashion week by 1976. Though Smith eventually relocated his flagship store to London’s trendy Notting Hill, he became an overnight sensation with his Mod-inspired selection of fine men’s clothing.

Paul Smith has always encouraged individuality, specialising in bespoke tailored suits in tweeds and luxurious wool blends with smart colourful shirts, polo tops and knitwear that unintentionally echoed the spirit of Carnaby Street during the 1960s. His similarities to other designers such as Fred Perry, Ted Baker and Ben Sherman propelled him towards high street popularity as his creations became wearable for every day.

Smith eventually moved on to design Paul Smith shoes, accessories and fragrances even producing a line of women’s wear in the 2000’s. Keen to maintain the role of both a designer and a retailer Smith plays closely to his winning formula – classic, quirky and fairly traditional with an added eclectic twist.

Selecting his own production methods, fabrics and shop locations, Smith accepted a knighthood in 2000 and graciously volunteered to help design posters and signs for the 2012 London Olympics.

Sir Paul Smith is a hard-working, dedicated businessman who has upheld the same tradition values since his turning point all those years ago. He may never get to have the racing career he always wished for but Smith is still riding higher than ever, leaving a trail of dust alongside his important legacy within the fashion industry.

Ok. I know that most of the females who strolled down the Red Carpet at the Golden Globes 2012 have been endlessly judged on their glittering gowns, but probably not as much attention has been directed toward the best and worst dressed men. Since I couldn’t pick just one “best” and one “worst” for the evening, I managed to narrow it down to two in each category.

I thought that Ricky Gervias’s tuxedo was a little abrasive, just like his hosting monologue. Although it is true that brown and black can be sheik together, not so much in this case. The color vacillated between a dull brown and a sort of burgundy under the stage lights and his unbuttoned black shirt just blended into the dark lapels of his tux. His was not a look not really becoming of someone who has not been afraid to go out on a limb.

To discuss the totally opposite end of the spectrum was the arrival of Leonardo DiCaprio. With his slicked back hair, neatly trimmed goatee, and classically elegant black tuxedo he exemplified Webster’s definition of “flawless” and was definitely a GQ look, if I have ever seen one.

Another guy who I thought really missed the mark when it came to selecting that “just right” outfit for The Golden Globes was Joseph Gordon. With his trim figure, the form-fitting tuxedo and multi-colored bow tie made a handsome guy look like a bad date from “The Dating Game” or like he was an escapee from “Pee Wee’s Fun House”. Sorry for the harshness guy, but whoever helped you pick out that outfit was not a really good friend. And FYI, Nordstrom actually carries a solid amount of classy bow ties. Be sure to check out www.couponcactus.com for last minute deals before showing up next time, Joe.

The man who absolutely stole the show, as far as unique fashion style, has to be Johnny Depp. His “less than traditional” half shawl lapel and half standard cut lapel tuxedo jacket was perfectly accented by his open collar white shirt. Johnny’s vest was a trendy pop of green, in a sea of dark tuxes and suits. Also, he completed his unique style with a long necklace, rings and an antique-looking pocket watch, whose chain hung elegantly below his jacket. A look that is only befitting of what we expect from Johnny Depp.

The concept of “fashion” rarely comes to mind when going for a run during the warmer months. With mild temperatures and a hot sun at your disposal, you’ll likely need nothing more than a pair of shoes, some running shorts, and maybe a t-shirt. That’s it. The fashion of your attire will undoubtedly play little role in your dress.

But everything changes when the weather turns cold. During the winter, runs get more intense, skin needs to be covered, and male runners are suddenly faced with the prospect of buying gloves, hats, tights, jackets, and various other accessories — even winter shoes. We foremost care that these accessories are functional. But, of course, we’d prefer that they’d be both functional and capable of making us look good in the process.

Fortunately, searching for attractive winter running garb is far easier than finding, say, an appealing new watch or black tungsten rings for men. All it requires is an eye for quality, a commitment to warm materials, and some knowledge of the latest, ever-changing trends. What are these latest trends? Let’s take a quick look:

Hooded synthetic shirts. Runners have long worn synthetic shirts and hats to stay warm. The recent rage, however, combines these two items into one: the shirt with a hoodie attached. This clothing synthesis looks unconventional at first but will insure that your neck remains warm on the coldest of winter runs.

Wind-resistant tights. Running tights have gone in and out of style over the past couple decades, and all indicators suggest that they are currently on the upswing. A simple pair of form-fitting black tights will accentuate your legs and positively present your overall physique in a way that running pants cannot.

Reflective gloves. Reflective gloves are a great way to stay safe while running near traffic on a winter evening. Fortunately, their sleek metallic design also makes for a stylish look.

Thermal vests. Yes, believe it or not, the clothing item widely derided as a nerdy accessory has found wide favor in the running community. The thermals vests will give a “smart” and finely angular look to your running wardrobe. They also provide a synthetic filler that can insure an added degree of warmth.

Adding these items to your winter running wardrobe can insure that you remain stylish and presentable when you hit the roads and the trails over the next couple months. Most importantly, though, they will insure that you remain warm while you do so.

The Versace brand was created by Gianni Versace and debuted in Milan, Italy in 1978. Even after his untimely death in 1997, his family and team of creative designers have kept his elegant style in the forefront of fashion. You would be hard pressed to be at a special event, like the Emmy’s or the Golden Globes, without hearing “Versace” mentioned. Just recently, Angelena Jolie arrived on the Red Carpet in a stunningly simple, off one shoulder ivory gown with a lipstick red sash at the neckline, a softly draped waist and sexy front slit. Simply elegant!

In looking at the Versace menswear line for 2012, I noticed several themes on the runway in Milan: Bold colors, fur elements, and embellishments. Versace has taken everyday fabrics and casual looks, transforming them into the unique style that you would expect: a grey leather jacket with geometric embossing is kicked up by stud detailing and the unexpected lime green fur collar; your favorite style denim jacket is jazzed up with the texture and shimmer of golden chains in patterns on the body and trim; long Sherpa-looking coats that are sculpted and done in flashy colors like red; the mixing if black and brown in two-tone leather jackets with animal print; and a denim jacket with deep colored sheared fur on the cuffs, sleeves and collar.

Versace also seems to be paring these styles with camouflage pants in many different colors. The trend of mixing the casualness of jeans and tuxedo-style luxury jackets is covered in this line too. As part of almost each and every look was the detail of a chain wallet peaking out from under the jackets. If I had to choose one word to describe the Versace 2012 Menswear line it would be “unexpected”.

Spring’s coming – I assure you. Try and block out the sensation of cold and think about how you’ll accessorize for the next season. Today’s let’s talk about the type of ties you should don when the time arrives and not look like you’re sporting something over-pronounced as a boys tie is allowed to be color-wise.

By and large it’s a truly good idea to stick with light colors when the sun really starts a-shining again. As always, stay far away from decaled/ graphic embosses ties and stick to simple, subtle patterns. This tie from Mens-Ties.com features a slight and tasteful checkered design that doesn’t veer away from the lush blue scheme. And as you can see, this tie dimples well too – hey, it’ll be spring, why not be daring a little? I consider this a solid office tie and also one you could work at a daytime wedding.

Speaking of daring, of course you can be bold within the color guidelines I cited above. Check out this number, which holds together a lot of vibrant pink, purple, lavender shades and never breaches the loud barrier. I wouldn’t pair this with a seersucker jacket or pants, but maybe something in light gray or navy or even teal. Events this would be perfect for: christenings, bar/bat mitzvahs, cocktail party.

I really like this tie. The color scheme sticks to the light side of the spectrum with the creamy yellow and light sky blue, but diverges nicely with the few royal blue stripes. It’s great for gala, a professional lunch, etc.

Forget how to tie a tie over this winter? It happens; check out that link for the lowdown on a man’s most important accessory.
