Worst Case Scenario: Cramming

Worst Case Scenario: Cramming
by Katrina Del Rosario

While no educator in his right mind would ever write anything on cramming tips, and no decent student should rely on cramming to get by, cramming is itself a reality that all of us had to go through at some point in school. We do it when we get so flustered with conflicting schedules and whatever bizarre or surreal situations we can find ourselves inadvertently smacked right in the middle of. We all have our excuses but the end is always the same—cramming is the last line of defense against the steadily looming possibility of failing. We are warned against cramming for many reasons: the most basic is that it is unhealthy and stressful but the more important one is that it would not allow for long-term learning, hence, making all the “studying” useless in the post-school world (a.ka. real world). We do not want this. Or do you?

Passed out nightly? No, thanks!

Diagnosis

It’s an easily recognizable scene: The sky is clear, the garlic rice smell especially crisp… your youngster is slumped over the table or his choice of expansive furniture. It looks as if his world just ended.

“But I don’t wanna go to school!”

This is the post-holiday fever. The cause: an abrupt halt to a noticeable absence of the need to go to school (e.g., the end of summer breaks, holidays, long weekends, and those confusing class cancellations due to rains). The symptoms: constant whining, groaning, complaining, and lethargy from your child. He may also appear vacant, procrastinating schoolwork, and hanging on to activities enjoyed during the no-school time which could be anything from playing videogames,

Ever wanted to make a story but didn’t know where to start? Ever had an idea in mind that you just could not seem to verbalize? Ever had a solid story to tell but no characters to act as vessels for your sensational literary gem? Or have you ever just wanted to try to do these things?

Everybody has to start somewhere. And where else is better than with world renowned storyteller Dr. Seuss’ beloved multiverse? As the saying goes, there are no straight lines in Seussville. Going wild is the norm here!

The Seussville Storymaker allows a user to create his/her very own story using beloved Dr. Seuss characters: Horton and company (of the “Horton Hears a Who” fame).
MATH: In the Beginning

MATH: In the Beginning
by Katrina Del Rosario

Many of us upon hearing the mere mention of math, cringe as if it were a death threat. But really, math itself is not the problem. It is rather the bad memories, early school trauma, and hours of frustration working with numbers and finding a solution to a difficult equation in one of our math classes that haunt us. Unfortunately, these associations end up with embitterment to the point of sorely resenting whoever it is who invented math in the first place.

Origins

In truth, math is a necessity. The earliest beginnings of math came from an instinctual need of our hunter-gatherer ancestors, whose daily lives revolved around surviving. This means knowing if you have enough bananas to keep yourself alive.

One banana, two banana, three…I get to live another day!

We have to admit that although all everyone needs for making comics is an active imagination, some of us could only wish that great talent comes with that great desire for creation.

It’s even harder for the readers, especially, if they can’t identify what you drew.

Well you need not worry about your wonderful, magnanimously funny story coming across to your readers: Make Beliefs Comix, an online comic-making website, is the answer to your creative dilemma!

One would say that something is easy as pie, but for your information, pie isn’t easy to make. So the great news about this site is that it is way easier than pie. It’s as easy as peeling a banana!

Push and then…Oh magical happiness!

“The Dairy Fairy” by ansy

With students being young and bursting with energy, yet made to sit still in a confined space, it is inevitable to have their restless minds easily wander onto non-academic things. And you have probably experienced this time and again in the classroom—students just do not voluntarily exert as much effort in, say, comprehending advanced algebra as they do in doodling or daydreaming. Forget talking about benefits in the long run; the future benefits of advanced algebra are of little concern

Test-taking—it has ingrained itself in everyone’s subconscious as something that induces a magnificently terrifying combination of panic, dread, and the fight-or-flight response all in one place, all in one time.

“I’m not ready! No!”

Tests are there to measure up things. At school, tests are yardsticks to see how much the students have learned and if what was learned is effectively applied. For children, it is a constant source of stress, pressure, and discomfort. Yet, performing well on tests is what defines success in the many areas of one's life. Beyond and outside school, there will always be tests: entrance exams for higher level education, tests for job applications, driver’s licenses, and so much more. The inability to do tests is a serious fallback, which has long-term adverse effects in a person's being and doing.

We climb stairs for a purpose: to get to the very top.

In life, the climbing represents our actions and the top, the things we want to achieve. We do not proceed with life aimlessly; our actions should have clear goals. And once we have set goals for ourselves, we can be sure that they will guide us through the climbing and keep us on the right track—or staircase, so to speak.

Having goals is as good as knowing where we want to go. And as soon as we know it, we take action to get there. In fact, only then can we make our first step up the staircase. In other words, without clear goals, our destination is where we are—nowhere to go. Then, procrastination extends to forever.

Sometimes, all of a sudden and out of the blue, we get struck by an unexpected fancy of wanting to read (it’s strange but it’s true!). But alas! There are no books in the house and the library is too far away. And when one overcomes the stubborn laziness to get there, the librarian doesn’t cut us much slack. The rigidity of most libraries (not all of them!) discourages us from the warm joys of reading, which for the most part, does not involve general discomfort. Wouldn’t you want to just lie down, prop open any book at your leisure, or much better even, have somebody read to you while you close your eyes and imagine away?

If you found yourself nodding for the past five seconds, then Mrs. P’s Library is exactly the right place for you! It’s a fun, interactive online library where you can browse Mrs. P’s online collection of books from all different genres. You can choose to read on

The trouble that children see with homework is that it is work. At the end of the day when they finish learning new lessons, answering tests and quizzes, and doing various school activities, they look forward to only one thing—home sweet home. Because the home is the place where children get the greatest comfort, it is not hard at all to forget about homework and the assignments of the day.

It’s...It’s calling out to me...!<br <img alt="helping-your-child-with-homework_01" src="http://celearning.ph/images/stories/CE-Learning_Platform_IMAGES/USEFUL_TIPS/helping-your-child-with-homework_01.jpg" height="198" width="200"
“Living Room” by idman

A couch spells comfort. A high-definition TV spells comfort. A cozy chair in front of a PC spells comfort, and so on. You get the peachy picture. Now compare the allure of these things to that of doing the chore and mental exertion of homework. Nobody really likes doing a ton of chores, not even

New Media Literacy Education: There’s always something new
by Katrina Del Rosario

Media has never been a stable ground; the only constant about it is that it is always changing and that it is always evolving. For years after the Internet boom in the 1990s, educators have always found themselves at loggerheads with media literacy because it was a hopeless case to integrate it with the then teaching system.
Who needs school? I have the Internet!

“Child & Laptop” by nevit
