Real Wedding: Backyard Wedding in New Jersey - Emily + Joseph

I think intimate and casual outdoor weddings can be so much fun! Take Emily and Joseph's New Jersey wedding for instance. They had so many great elements such as games of lawn croquet, cigar rolling, and even a mustard tasting contest. You heard me right! The guests brought their own mustard recipes and they had a tasting contest using soft pretzels! YUM! And my favorite of all time... a good old fashioned the log sawing, which is a German tradition that occurs right after the ceremony and symbolizes the first tough tasks a couple will endure in their new marriage. This wedding was handmade, from the decor on down to the wedding cake, created by Emily's sister {she did a lovely job} and Laura Leigh Photography was on hand to capture their best moments!

What a sweet wedding celebration!

Hello FABULOUS readers! I've been holding onto these images for a while. But today is the day! It makes me so excited to share a bit of my work with you today. Last summer I designed a vintage literary theme wedding with a southern twist for a wonderful couple. Overtime the wedding was aptly titled, "A Shabby Chic Fairy Tale". To set the tone and get the guests excited about the wedding, we worked with them to come up with a concept for these adorable Vintage Postcard Save The Dates. I had a great time designing them!

Engagement: Love at Santa Anita Race Track

I used to live just down the street from the Santa Anita Race Track. There is a such a wonderful electric energy that fills the air on race days. I love that Tiffany and Ryan chose to have their engagement session at the track. Along with Pure Love Photography, they spent time with their beautiful horse and then took their session to the private members only section at the track. This shoot reminds me so much of days when society's elite would venture off the the track, gents in suits and ladies donning over sized sunhats! Take a peek...

Fabulous Engagement: Love with Planes, Trains and Automobiles

I happen to really love old cars and unusually large vintage items. I think that's why I am head over heels for Katie and Ryan's engagement session. A couple after my own heart, they took their love of old cars and headed to Hot Sam's Antiques in Minnesota for their engagement session. Sandy Jean Photography was on hand to capture every fun moment spent among the rusted out planes, trains and automobiles! Love this!

Julia shares how she was inspired to bring Fabulous and Graceful to life in this mock wedding shoot: "As part of a couple that has both been previously married and had wonderful, traditional big weddings, I wanted to create a stylized wedding that spoke volumes of class, grace, sophistication, simplicity and life. To me, nothing is more fabulous. Drawn to the bride that likes to show variety in her taste, that takes a simple color palette into simple beauty with fabulous touches, I wanted to create a look that created a mood, not just a pretty photograph. The evocation of emotion is prevalent in the vintage weddings, yet I wanted to create a fabulous design with vintage touches. My color palette began with a base of earth tones that resonate with my love for outdoor weddings which are blossoming with life."

"Chandler Park in Rolling Hills Estates, has always had a peaceful allure. I walked down to take a peek at how and if it had changed, and I was taken aback by the possibility of a quaint wedding ceremony under the trees. I began writing a love story that was entitled “And, The Bride wore Black” about a bride who wanted her love story written as if her dress was the pen, rather than the picture. Most people equate the color black for a wedding dress as Gothic or Goth. They assumption is often that the bride may have tattoos or piercings. A fabulous wedding can absolutely have the bride in black especially with the delicacy and grace of the Victorian Style."

"As I glanced at the bridle trails in the park, I thought of a beautiful Victorian wedding with a black and gray color scheme with touches of white. The backdrop would have horses, dogs and hints of things present during the Victorian era. It was such a graceful time in history and I wanted to keep the theme subtle, yet felt through the emotion of each captured moment. A full dress with a petticoat that flowed along the green grass was a picturesque image."

"I am a collector of old world candelabras and have several tall, wrought iron stems waiting in my garage to be used for an event such as this. I have always wanted to use them for centerpieces, but loved the look of them as a faint outline of the black aisle runner. Over time I had gathered multiple items that worked perfectly with the outdoor setting including dresses for Cotillions and formals. The piece that added truly fabulous to the design was the antique, crystal wedding tree. Ah, what a gorgeous piece of history to utilize in place of an arbor. The crystals caught every fabulous ray of the 3pm sunlight cascading through the trees. Everything began to unfold as I gathered items to make it feel as if we had stepped back in time, because in many ways through my love story, I had."

Katrina shares what inspired her to create this romantic escort card display: "Were you that girl that dreamed of her wedding? Do you have endless dreams of you in that beautiful dress? Or did you feel like a little princess every time you put on a gown? Well hey you aren’t alone. As young ladies, we often think of ourselves as princesses, and some of the childhood favorites is snow what, Cinderella, Barbie or even princess jasmine; but as we grow into woman we still never do away with all the lovely fairytales. I instantly think of poufy dresses, beautiful shades of pink and rose and amazing shoes of course; therefore that’s why I de-cided to create an amazing escort card table to fit that modern fairytale bride."

"The escort card table consist of bling and fillers, several shades of pink, beautiful orchids, beautiful lilies as the centerpiece, and last a very mod-ern but yet simple escort card that’s attached to each vase for your guest."

DIY Centerpieces

I cut the steams from the both the lily plant and orchid plant. For the lily centerpiece I took between 2-4 flowers and submerged them in water upside down, than added about 10-12 orchids in a bunch, and attempted to get that hang over effect. For the orchid, I simply added the orchid to a tall vase filled with water and adjusted the flowers to my likings.

DIY Escort Card Candle

Cut ribbon approximately 1 ft. I than used a glue dot to assemble the ribbon together, after the ribbon is on the vase tightly, I attached the escort card with hot glue via the glue gun. Afterwards I filled my vase with my bling/fillers, and than added water, votives holders, and votive candle. I lit the candle and there you have a beautiful escort card and candle.

"The escort candle can also be used for personal take home favor for your guest. This table is filled with all types of fabulosity; however this table represents elegance, style and last but not least…grace."

I am thrilled to share with you a super cute shoot that reminds me so much of the Little Rascals. Danielle Pasternak of Danielle Pasternak Wedding Coordinator in Pennsylvania, was inspired miniaturized items and a nod to childhood and the wedding dreams of a little girl. Danielle weaves a magical story on how she translated Fabulous and Graceful: "A big trend we are seeing in the wedding world are miniature-sized items with a nod to our child-hood. Finger foods, cake pops, mashed potato stations, and cupcakes are all starting to wipe out seven-layer cakes and twice baked potatoes. Why is this happening? I see all of these items as things that provided comfort in our youth."

"The full tablescape came together using vintage china pieces, stunning gold flatware, mismatched chairs and stemware along with Grandma’s lace doilies to represent the Bride. The Groom’s taste came through in the centerpieces with candles, wooden crates, a large branch structure and some Spanish moss. To add some more sparkle and coordinate with the gold flatware, we glittered a wooden “3” to represent the table number. To greet each guest was a lovely cupcake because sometimes dessert can come first. On the menu for dinner was petite shrimp, grilled cheese bites with cream of tomato sips, a little spaghetti and meatball and a spoonful of mac."

"The sweetheart table was designed using a vintage coffee table (just the right size) and a blush pink, vintage loveseat. The flowers were incorporated to match the bouquet of the Bride while candles were added to the groom’s side to tie in to the larger tablescape. Plates were raised onto small stands and two bite-sized cookies awaited their arrival."

"After dinner, there would be some chatting and discussing held in the Milk and Cookie Lounge. More vintage sofas were brought in as well as a stack of old suitcases that were formed to make a coffee table. We had several different kinds of cookies to be enjoyed with a cold glass of white and/or chocolate milk."

"Once the guests had their fill of cookies, they were invited to share a dance with their loved one and indulge in the sweet display complete with cake pops and miniature cakes. This is also where we decided to use old, metal letterpress letters to spell out “Grace & Fab”."

"Overall, this shoot was truly about the innocent and soft views of what a wedding should be through the eyes of a child. To me, there isn’t anything more graceful or fabulous than that."

Fabulously Wedding Photo Shoot: A Charming + Romantic Spring Wedding

Melissa shares how she married Fabulous and Graceful in her bright and sweet shoot: "I chose to go with yellow and white for the color palette. I decided that I wanted something charming, roman-tic, and soft. My shoot naturally had a spring feel to it."

"I opted to do a mock sweetheart table. My whole inspiration for the color and design were these yellow bird cage candle holders that I found at Michaels. I painted wood letters yellow and covered them with glitter to make Mr. and Mrs. banners for the chairs. I used a yellow table cloth with a white runner that has butterflies on it. I could not find yellow chargers anywhere so I hand-painted green chargers that I found at Michaels. I used white plates with a vintage yellow napkin. I made the menu cards with white cardstock and a shimmery yellow border. I used 3 milk glass vases that I found at the Salvation Army and filled them with fresh spring flowers. I hung 5 balls above the table that I made with styrofoam, fabric, and tulle."

"For the guest tables I would use rectangular tables with yellow linens and white chivari chairs. I would continue with the same chargers, tableware, and menus that are on the sweetheart table. I would line up a bunch of the milk glass vases down the center of the tables with yellow craspedia."

DIY: Styrofoam ball instructions:

1. Take styrofoam balls and poke holes in them with a pencil.

2. Cut different size squares out of any fabric you want to use.

3. Put some tacky glue in a hole.

4. Twist fabric square on a pencil (the eraser side) and stick it in the hole.

5. Repeat steps 3-5 until desired fullness.

Elvira shares how the union of Fabulous and Graceful served as the inspiration for her "Regal Tablescape". "This inspirational color palette assisted in developing a beautiful tablescape with de-cor items that harmoniously exude the words Fabulous + Graceful while infusing aspects of chic, sexy, glitzy, and glam into the concept."

"The setting for this tablescape can easily be displayed indoors or outdoors, but due to the time of year and weather we chose to go with an indoor venue. I chose a 6 ft rectangular shaped table and ornately carved wood chairs with gold chair pads for the tablescape."

"To exemplify FABULOUS, I chose an iridescent eggplant purple taffeta table linen and napkins to decorate the table, which provided a rich and elegant appearance while adding texture and complimenting the gold elements and decor. The focal point of the table decor that embodies the word GRACEFUL are two beautifully elegant goblets with crackled glass and gold and ivory tile accents. These goblets were filled with complimentary shades of elegant purple flowers, such as sweet peas, scabiosas, anemones, and yellow button mums, that were enveloped by large pearls and crystals."

"I found four beautiful gold candlestick holders that I adorned with crystal accents to add chic, sexy, and bling elements to the decor. The other beautiful details included in this tablescape are four glass cylinder vases filled with stones and flowers, and 6 vintage gold mercury glass votives. Elegant silverware, wine goblets, gold chargers and ivory-gold plates with a decorative rim are used to set the table for guests."

"Each place setting has a square folded napkin with a decorative flower, holding a purple menu adorned with pearls and crystals along with a two-toned purple place-card in an elegant script font. Each favor is hand-wrapped with a FABULOUS vintage fabric tied with an ivory ribbon and a textured Thank You for each guest."

"The combination of rich colors, texture, circular shapes, flowers, and jewels culminated in an overall FABULOUS & GRACEFUL presentation of chic elegance and striking elements of beauty."

Ann Marie has a sweet story to share about her love for all things French and how she translated it into a Fabulous and Graceful design: "There's no other place on earth that embodies the ideas of "Graceful" and "Fabulous", better than Paris, France. And sparkle? Well, if you've ever seen the Eiffel Tower at night, you know it sparkles like a gem! Naturally, when naming my wedding business, I chose a French name; "tres beau" means "very beautiful", and that's what I strive for when working with each of my cli-ents. Every bride is tres beau, in her own way!"

"Paris, and more specifically, the Palace at Versailles, was my inspiration in my design for the Backstage Bridal Pro Scholarship contest. When we were there in January, we toured Versailles for the first time. It's very grand and beautiful, with almost every surface gilded. This is where several of France's kings lived, and probably most fa-mously, where Marie Antoinette lived and eventually lost her head."

"I chose to design a Bridesmaids' Brunch in Versailles Gardens. My palette of blush rose, Tiffany blue, turquoise, powder blue and gold were inspired by the beautifully painted and frescoed ceilings in the palace. My own antique, formal china, "Haviland" by Limoges, was used for the brunch plates and tea cups with saucers. The teal glass plates at each setting are also from my personal collection of depression glass. The pretty gold-rimmed champagne glasses were borrowed from my grandmere, Mimi, as well as the gold flatware. A nod to the famous and impressive Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, I used mirrors as chargers at each place. Each guest's name was inscribed in gold at the top of each charger, as well as a French sentiment, expressing the bride's thanks and love for her dear friends. A pintuck ivory tablecloth set the base for the placesettings."

"The tailored burlap runner and potted boxwood plants pay homage to Versailles' extensive formal gardens. The gardens at Versailles are now enjoyed by the French people and thousands of tourists every year, but were the personal playground of the French aristocracy when Marie Antoinette was living there. Marie was known, infa-mously, for her frivolity, so I wrapped the boxwood plants in luxurious lace accented with antique buttons. The roses and baby's breath overflowing from various containers give the tablescape a fragrant and feminine feel. The ribbons accenting the burlap runner help tie the color palette together and add a playful touch, while a sassy pink bird watches over the table from her perch on the candlestick. To give an indoor brunch a feel of the outdoors, I hung roses from ribbons and lace from the chandelier. That gives the illusion of dining in the midst of a rose garden!"

DIY Doily Food Labels:

Materials needed:

8-inch paper doilies

Pop sticks (available at craft stores or cake supply shops)

Ribbon

Decorative clips

Glue stick

Gold paint calligraphy pen

Sparkle scrapbook paper in aqua

"Fleur-de-lis" paper punch

Directions:

For the label on the apothecary jar, use one doily and write "Croissants" with the gold pen. Glue a fleur-de-lis that was punched from the aqua sparkle paper to accent. Tie a length of ribbon to the jar's lid, securing the doily label with a decorative clip or pin. Alternately, you can glue the doily to the end of the ribbon.

For the cheese label, fold one doily in half, "sandwich" the folded doily around one end of a pop stick, gluing the doily halves together securely. Write "Brie" with the gold pen, accenting this label with a paper-punched fleur-de-lis.

DIY “Merci” Banner

Materials needed:

7 8-inch paper doilies

1/8-inch ivory ribbon

Gold paint calligraphy pen

Sparkle scrapbook paper in aqua

Glue stick

"Fleur-de-lis" paper punch

Directions:

Fold each doily in half, creasing well. Take the first doily and put a few spots of glue on the inside, placing it over the ribbon at one end, so the ribbon is "sandwiched" by the folded doily. Be sure to leave 6 inches or so on the end to be able to hang the banner.

Leave a gap of 6-8 inches before placing the next doily in the same manner. For the following 4 doilies, place them only 1/2 inch or so apart on the ribbon. The last doily, place like the first one, 6-8 inches from the one be-fore it, to form the end of the banner. Again, leave ribbon at the end of 6 inches or so to be able to hang the banner.

On the middle 5 doilies, write one letter on each, to spell out "MERCI" with the gold pen. Punch 2 fleur-de-lis from the sparkle paper and glue to the 2 doilies at the ends of the banner.

You can tie your banner to tacks or hooks, or use decorative clips, like the ones I found on Etsy!

Victoria has a lovely story on how she came to translate Fabulous and Graceful in her design: "We stress staying true to who you are to all of our Brides & Grooms. Your family members and guests who truly know you should walk into this wonderful event and see - YOU. Anna and John came to us expressing their love for the South, more specifically, Atlanta, GA. When I first met Anna, she was wearing cutest outfit; it was modern but paired with cowboy boots. I could instantly tell she was a fashionista! John was a true Southern guy with a great accent; he seemed uncomplicated and easygoing. Together, they honesty could be summed up as the perfect ‘Southern Ken and Barbie.’ In the initial meeting, they told us about their love for sweet tea, peach cobbler, and simplicity. From the moment they said peach, I knew we had a theme!

We created this gorgeous color palette and storyboard with the help of Anna’s pinterest, and it really just took off from there. Though there had to be editing along the way, through partnership with the bride and groom, we came up with a gorgeous tablescape that truly represents who they are."

"The couple loved the idea of tying together peaches, Atlanta’s hometown fruit, and the city’s sky line, to create the setting for their wedding event. Staying true to who Anna and John are, we wanted the design to be FABULOUS + GRACIOUS, yet simple and clean."

"One thing we knew we could NOT forget in this monumental event was one of John’s requests … peach cobbler! Thinking outside of the box is what we do best, so we came up with a peach cobbler signature drink. At first it sounded a bit strange, but it turned out quite delicious! Here is the recipe:

Peach Cobbler + Sweet Tea

1 Bottle of FTS Pink Lemonade

1 1/2 cup of Tonic Water

2 cups of Peach Firefly Tea Vodka

2 peaches (slice the peaches to add as garnish)

Mix all the liquid ingredients up and drop the peaches in with a few cups of ice.

Enjoy!"

"We took the peaches theme literally, then, we sprayed every peach with a heavy coat of glitter to add sparkle to their early evening ambiance. The ivory satin table linens and champagne chair covers were clean and simple, but picked up the city lights making our peaches and gold accents really pop! The peach lemonade bottles (which also doubled as our signature drink) were doused in Krylon Metallic Spray Paint (Bright Gold). We used the same paint to dust a few old books as risers for our floral arrangements. The unique range of flowers in the centerpieces included: ivory and peach roses, ivory hydrangeas, dusty miller, white larkspur, peach Peruvian lilies, and (the bride and grooms favorite) pincushion proteas."

"Anna and John were thrilled to see that Créme de le Chic Events listened and picked up on things that were important to them."

Fabulous Bridal Shower Shoot: Tickled Pink With a Splash of Bling

Keshia shares how she articulates a fabulous and graceful look for this intimate bridal shower design. "In my experience with working with brides it has taught me that they LOVE bling and all the fabulousness that comes along with it. For the color scheme I used white and various shades of pink with touches of crystals and diamonds. The overall look is elegant and graceful allowing for the soon to be bride’s personality to shine through."

"I set a single oval table big enough for four with an elegant fuchsia satin table cloth and rose petal covered placemats. How do these lovely ladies find their seats you ask with diamond card holders displaying their name of course? These four women will find a personalized handwritten menu nestled in their napkins and fuchsia chargers underneath all white plates."

"In the center of the table is a fabulous classic pink rose ball sitting on a clear vase dripping with crystals. I posi-tioned two smaller vases displaying floating candles accompanied with four tea light candles."

"My final decorative touch of fabulousness came in the form of a beautiful pink and white candy buffet set to please any sweet tooth. The Tickled Pink tasty treats candy buffet is decked out with gumballs, sixlets, cupcakes, chocolates, and tickled pink homemade lemonade. Dangling above the candy buffet are three fluffy pink decorations hung at different levels to play with the eyes. This candy buffet makes for a great party favor."

The Texture: Smooth as satin and light as a rose petal. I enjoy playing up the contrast of textures in my parties. In tickled pink, I went with the smooth soft feels of satin and the light feel of rose petals. When you run your hand over the placemats you feel the soft delicate feel of rose petals. To ramp up the glam factor a few notches, I brought in rhinestones for the chair covers and menus, crystals for he centerpiece, and diamonds for the candy buffet.

The Taste: Think Pink. If pink were a flavor, I am pretty sure it would be sweet and delicate so there was no doubt that the menu for the party would be both these things. These women enjoyed Chilled Strawberry soup served to them in individual goblets rimmed with sugar. The main course was pan-roasted salmon with mango salsa and Frisee Salad. To wash their food down they enjoyed Pink Cocktail Sparklers made up of pink lemonade, white cranberry juice, chilled sparkling cider and vodka and for dessert, decadent Vanilla Bodice Cake was served.

The Scent: Sweet as Sugar. This Bridal Shower was tailor-made that every sensation the guests experienced would blend perfectly with the design of the space. Surrounded by different shades of pink, crystals and a sweet candy buffet, what fragrance would be more fitting other than sugar. On the table are four sugar fragrance tea lights that fill the air complementing the candy buffet also located in the room.

The Sound: Soft instrumentals and laughter creating unforgettable memories. Music is the gateway to our souls; it has the ability to take us down memory lane and keep us there for hours and who better to share that moment with other than your three best friends that have been along on the ride of life with you. For this Tickled Pink Bridal Shower, I went with a more soothing soft instrumental sound for music. I downloaded hours of soft insrumental on an iPod to ensure in skipping from a CD so that these ladies would have nonstop entertainment. As the women sipped on their Pink Cocktail Sparklers and filled the air with laughter, they reminisced on just how Fabulous their life has been as they celebrate a milestone for a good friend. Who said that all parties need large groups of people and loud music? Sometimes all you need is an intimate elegant setting with a few close friends of great tasting food.

Kristy explains how she pulled together this beautiful look for an intimate and romantic wedding affair: "When I hear the word graceful I think of intimate, delicate and romantic. I chose to create a table setting for a small dinner reception for a couple. It takes place in the back yard of the brides childhood home. The color palette for this affair was gold, silver and creams."

"The linen was a soft ivory duponi linen that I paired with a ginger bengaline moiré napkin from Fabulous Events. The napkin was then topped with a delicate pearl cluster napkin ring. To add a little fabulousness to the table I choose a champagne sparkle plate charger from Pier 1. Holland Designs created the romantic menu cards that mimicked the look of hand written calligraphy with a few added rhinestones."

"To keep things simple and let the other details take center stage I chose to create two small flower arrangements. I wanted the flowers to have that just tossed together look. White roses, blue hydrangea and Phalaenopsis orchids were all randomly placed in my DIY mercury cylinder vases and then a few gold and silver mercury votives were scattered on the table. No one can resist a little bling so the table number, also created by Holland Designs was a carved wood number that was decked out in rhinestone crystals."

"To round off the complete look I used gold flatware, gold rimmed crystal stemware and gold chivari chairs with ivory cushions. The outdoor space was a stone patio where the table sat under a pergola that housed a vintage chandelier that has oxidized over the years."

"Behind the guest table was a stone console table that I placed varying sized cylinders with candles and votives. Inside the farm house the cake was displayed."

"To carry the gracefulness to the cake Patty cakes and creations did a classic buttercream cake with hand piped roses. The soft delicate details of this reception look carried out the theme of “Gracefulness” while the little touches of sparkles and bling brought the “Fabulous” to the party in which no bride can resist."

DIY Instructions for the Mercury Glass

Items needed:

Clear Glass Vase

Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint

Krylon Gold Metallic Spray Paint ( I used this to give a 2 toned look to glass)

Dish of equal parts white vinegar and water

Paper Towel

Instructions:

1) Spray the inside of the clear glass vase with the Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint. Let dry (5 minutes)

2) Take a paper towel and dip it into the vinegar and water mixture. Gently rub the inside of the vase with the towel in different areas until desired look is achieved. *** you want the glass to look like the paint has worn away over time****

3) Now spray the inside of the vase very lightly with the gold spray so that the gold is shown through the areas that the looking glass spray was rubbed off from. Let dry.

Fabulous Wedding Photo Shoot: A Flash Mob Styled Shoot

As I continue to showcase the entries for the Annual Backstage Bridal Pro Academy Scholarship Contest. The second the three shoots today is an exciting and unique shoot that transforms a raw space into something fun and glam. Brandi Dunagan of Country Sugar Events in San Antonio, Texas, was inspired by the couture bride. Brandi shows how brides can still be mindful of the environment and remain resourceful but enjoy a celebration that is still filled with glitz and glam. Brandi describes in awesome detail how she created her idea of Fabulous and Graceful: "We at Country Sugar Events pride ourselves on the connection with the client and the ability to produce what we like to call “personality-infused” events. Without being able to speak directly to Tami and Lisa directly, I looked for key words of inspiration within the guidelines of the contest. A few key things resonated with me:
1. fabulous – When I thought of fabulous glitz and glam automatically came to mind. Fabulous is a feeling and a state of mind…something that can often be enhanced by your surroundings.
2. graceful – Effortless and ladylike. Graceful is the word that inspired me to have my neutral as a bright crisp white.
3. “near and dear to our hearts” – I honestly was drawn to the word heart within the opening explanation of the challenge. I wanted to go glam but still stay very youthful and playful with the design. Incorporating hearts was such a fun way to fuse what I was going for in the look.
4. sparkle – This was such an exciting addition. Early on in the design process I knew my “sparkle” was going to be gold glitter…it’s my 2012 obsession."

"I wanted a bride to see what could be done with a raw space. This is a major reason why I chose the location I did. A small alleyway in Buda, Texas, just south of Austin. We jokingly coined the term “flash mob styled shoot” that day as we overtook what usually is a place where leaves collect, and crowds pass without a second thought. Maybe a bride has chosen a venue because she has to find an affordable option that still fits all her guests or lets her choose her own caterer. This shoot was for her. Maybe a bride wants a blank canvas and wants to transform a raw space into a creation of her own. This shoot was for her."

"The texture of the linen also added tons of dimension to the table and design. The chivari “ice” chairs were a perfect fit to the look. The juxtaposition of the chairs, linen, and
alleyway was the perfect fusing of fab and raw."

"When it came to the small touches I went for a middle ground with DIY. Brides today want to do small projects but don’t have the time with full time jobs and full lives to Martha their entire soiree. Here’s a little breakdown:

"Gold glitter runway – The runway consisted of one roll of gold glittered wrapping paper, white paper hearts from the children’s craft section, and gold scroll flourishes from the scrapbook section. All pieces were held secure with re-usable sticky tack dot adhesives. Gold mercury glass votives were added in for dimension and a depth."

"I chose the clear “take-out” box to reflect the same feel as the chivari “ice” chairs. Inside
the box were a classic red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing. Don’t fabulous brides eat red velvet? The heart shaped gold glitter flakes were from the baking section of the craft store and sprinkled in each box. A letter representing the first name of the bride and groom was affixed to the front of the box to bring it all together."

"The number 4 was also a craft store find. Gold flourishes, like those on the gold glitter runway, were added to tie in the design."

"This guest book is actually a scrapbook with blank pages. The “a” is a sticker from the same set we used for the favor boxes and represents the couple’s last name."

"From the red carpet to the wedding aisle, brides want to feel like a couture bride. As wedding industry professionals we do have to think bigger. Why did vintage start to pop up and trend so heavily? Yes, of course the design elements are romantic, quirky, and unique…but more than that it’s creativity working at high octane in a down economy. This is not the Great Depression, but it’s also definitely not the Golden Years. Brides are being resourceful and mindful of the environment and these are two things that are going to stick around. We may see the return of glam, but it’s going to be done differently…still tons of DIY and vintage touches will remain as brides incorporate heirlooms and bargain finds."

Shannon explains the intricacies involved in creating the anticipation for weddings. "My role in working with event planners and individual clients is to introduce the guests to the event theme, grandeur, or simplicity, of the event itself. This is no easy task, as the wedding invitation suite, which may include pre-wedding station-ery, is the first glimpse into all the great details to come. In short, wedding stationery sets the tone for what lies ahead, and therefore it must be absolutely on point and fabulous, tying in with all the other details the wedding couple, and their planner, have already decided upon."

"My intent is to show the viewers and judges the many fabulous and graceful ways paper can be used, not only in the wedding invitation suite itself, but also as a way to add those personal and unique touches every wed-ding couple, and event planner, strives to create for “the big day.” All pieces have been designed first by sketching (on paper!), then by cutting, gluing, fold-ing, and assembling. Each piece of product you see in the entry has been entirely handcrafted, which is what Sage & Time Designs products are best known for!"

"Swans are one of the most beautiful creatures I have ever laid eyes upon. To see their wings spread wide open, witness a seemingly effortless liftoff along the horizon, and then the propelling of their bodies from the water’s surface, paints a very fabulous and graceful image in one’s mind. It was with this vision of the graceful swan that the inspiration for the Backstage Bridal Pro Scholarship Contest was conceived."

"Particularly popular today are “Mr. and Mrs. Signs” and banners, included as part of the reception signage. I decided to incorporate a white sheer ribbon, deep purple lettering backed by silver sugared paper, and a mix of white swan feathers and crystals. These signs are intended to drape off the back of a chair, making a bold statement and “announcing” the newly married couple."

"Pulling from my background in biology and botany, I believe the orchid must be the one of the most delicate and graceful flowers found in nature. "Imagine walking into the reception and being greeted by this gracefully, arching lighted tree display, awaiting your addition of a signed swan. The tree concept was constructed from pre-lit branches, feather and crystal floral pics, and tall purple vases. The entire display cascades over three orchids, floating in a pool of water. As guests move closer to get a better look, they notice a small sign requesting they write their names on an origami swan and add it to the display."

"Will You Be My Bridemaid?Card: Many brides are opting for charming, personalized stationery which asks their friends and family to participate in their wedding ceremony. For this design, a dress was drawn on paisley paper, in coordinating purple hues, and then backed in pearl paper. To add detail to the dress, a white ribbon and floral was used to embellish and ac-centuate the waistline."

Amy tells a fabulous tale of how she was inspired by Fabulous and Graceful:"I was so struck by the pure beauty of it all. Stately manors, sublime fashions, and snarky comments? Yes please! So when the theme of the scholarship contest was announced, I nearly jumped for joy. What could be more graceful and fabulous than a Downton Abbey inspired wedding?"

"The first two seasons take place between the sinking of the Titanic and the end of World War I. It was a time of elegance and propriety, and yet there was a bit of excitement under the surface - we were on the verge of the Jazz Age and flappers after all. I wanted to hint at that excitement so instead of the darker colors of the Victorian Era the color palette includes the pastels that were emerging in fashion and home furnishings. An example of this is seen in the decor of the beautiful Drawing Room at Downtown Abby. It is filled with gorgeous pale blue/green, with creamy ivory and pink furnishings. I wanted to bring shades of grey, pink, butter, and sage to the decor and flowers as well as a soft lighting that makes everything seem so romantic and dreamy. The bouquet and center-piece included a combination of flowers, herbs, and plants to get the romantic look reminiscent of the era - Ranunculus, Akito and Vendella roses, Evergreen Clematis, Ornamental Kale, 2 kinds of Scented Geranium, Lavender, Rosemary, Waxflower, Dusty Miller, Miniature Carnations, Stocks, Assorted Begonia leaves and flowers, and just a touch of Pink Jasmine vine."

"Our lovely bride wore a gorgeous Rina di Montella french lace gown with matching jacket, sweetheart neck-line, tiered skirt and three-dimensional flowers - a modern take on the fashion of the day. Her hair was done in a style similar to Lady Mary Crawley's, and the makeup reflects the understated look the aristocracy favored. Usu-ally just a bit of dusting powder was used - in those days only prostitutes and actresses wore makeup! - but Emily Johnson created a look that modern brides would be pleased to wear."

"The table setting features lots of silver metallics and glistening crystal, including cut crystal candlesticks with long tapers, and a Waterford crystal bell to call the servants. I used clear "ice" chiavari chairs for seating and a grey linen to make the colors in the florals really pop."

"And while there would be all that softness in the feeling of the wedding, I also wanted to include the fabulousness of the jewelry from that time - Edwardian Bib necklaces and sparking brooches inspired the cake from Creme de la Cake, as well as the custom invitations, place cards, and menu from Lisa Takao Paper Couture. I had so much fun putting this together - I hope you enjoy it as well."

Courtney Tibbets of After the Engagement, teamed up with several incredible vendors from San Diego. Courtney created a lovely setting that showcases an edgy, non-traditional and unique bride with a bit of sparkle that I believe will make you smile. Courtney was inspired by her vision of her ideal client. "I have said from the beginning that my ideal client would be edgy enough to wear a black wedding gown. While she ultimately might choose not to, she could totally pull it off!"

"The black wedding gown was my starting point for this shoot, and I knew I had to have one." San Diego designer, D'Marie Bridal Couture created a custom bridal gown for this shoot and from there the vision was born.

"For 2012, I am totally obsessed with bow ties, patterns (Stripes! Chevron!), and monochrome flower arrangements. These bow ties are both classic and edgy at the same time, a cool and simple silhouette with fun patterns."

"Monochrome flower arrangements involve no mixing of colors within the actual arrangement, though you can always include plenty of colors throughout the wedding design. In this case, I made use of this trend with our centerpieces; but you could use this for boutonnieres, bouquets, anything. The wonderful florist, Exquisite Blooms, and I used pinks and yellows with white milk glass vases. I love how the sweet flowers pop against the bold black and white striped linens."

"I also decided to use our glittery cake ball cake was used as a centerpiece. With something as beautiful, glittery, and theme-worthy as this, why hide it in the corner of the room? Cake Ball Love even added strung sugar beads for another touch of glam. For the place settings, I wanted to do something fancy, but unexpected. The black swirly highballs are a lot of fun for a wedding or a dinner party, are are quite a bit more unique than regular clear glassware. I placed the bright yellow plates on top of shiny textured chargers, and added black napkins and Brightly Designed's beautiful menu's to round it all out."

"I had so much fun designing, styling, and conceptualizing this shoot with all the wonderful vendors who donated their time and services. I hope you enjoy it!"

Fabulous Wedding Advice: Do I Need A Wedding Planner?

You may or may not know this about me, but I am an educator at heart. I am passionate about it. There is nothing better than making an informed decision when purchasing a product or service you are unfamiliar with. Weddings are unique in that most engaged couples have little to no experience in planning one, who to hire and what they need to know to select those vendors that are right for them.

Two years ago, I hosted an amazing bridal education event in Los Angeles titled, Backstage Bridal: A Luxury Wedding Experience. The difference between this event and the other bridal shows in town was that this was heavy on the education and minimal on the sale of a service and product. Over the next several weeks, I will be sharing video from a variety of vendors who willingly shared what to expect when you work with and interview, and ultimately hire your vendors.

To kick things off, I thought it appropriate to share my session, "You're Engaged....Now What?"
