Last month I shared with you that I have been a loyal Walmart Family Mobile customer for over two years. I recently got the opportunity to spread the word about Family Mobile’s unlimited plans (as part of a sponsored post for Collective Bias®), and I took it! My husband and I had been considering adding a third line to replace our long ago eliminated land line so there would be a phone at home when we are not there. Also, we wanted a phone our son could take with him when he attends activities without us. Our experience with Family Mobile has shown us that it is the best wireless plan with the lowest price. But as part of this program we found several new reasons to love Family Mobile.

It has been just about a month since we added our third line and it has proven to be a good decision for our family. We are a low media family and we do not own a video game system of any kind. My son had heard about Minecraft from his friends and wanted to play the sandbox video game at home. The phone we were sent as part of this program was the myTouch phone, a 4G phone with enough memory to support gaming. My son has become quite a decent Minecraft player and is uncovering more in the game each time he plays (which I limit). It has been fun to watch him enter the gaming world, even on a limited basis. It was also a nice distraction for him on our recent turbulent plane ride.

Another benefit to having a phone and line dedicated to my son is that he can learn and practice technology without having to use my Samsung Galaxy S2. He is learning to text, navigate the device, use the camera, and more. Here he is using the Genius button which allows voice prompts for searches, calls, texts, and other tasks. He is really starting to get the hang of it.

One unexpected benefit of getting this phone for my son is that he has been taking some pretty good pictures with its camera. He seriously loves nature and is a budding horticulturalist. He has had so much fun taking pictures of the things he is growing out in the yard. Check out this cool picture he took of a new leaf on his fig tree.

Since we have been Family Mobile customers for some time, we were already familiar with the ins-and-outs of the service. Bills can be paid in store, online, or via the phone. Almost anything a customer might need can be handled at myfamilymobile.com or by dialing #611 from your phone. Also, now that we have a child on our plan, I was pleased to see that I have the ability to limit my sons’s phone use and permissions right from the Family Mobile site. Another thing I really appreciate is the texts that are sent out to remind me of my bill, thank me for paying, and to let me know about changes that have been made to the account (address changes and so forth).

We are 100% satisfied with our experience of adding a third line and providing our son with his first phone.

Adding the third line was very easy.

There is now a phone at home, even when my husband and I are not there with our cell phones.

Our son now has the ability to play video games with his peers (with limits set by us).

Our son is now enjoying photography.

Our son is learning how to use technology without having to handle our more expensive phones.

The price cannot be beat!

If you have been considering adding a new line to your Family Mobile plan then just do it! It was so easy. I simply went to the store, purchased a starter kit for $25, and activated it online. The starter kit can be purchased online, but I wanted to get my hands on it immediately so I went to the store. You can see more about my shopping trip here. If you are not a Family Mobile customer, then make the switch! You will save money while getting great service and features. It truly is a win-win situation for your family.

Like I am always telling you, I am not a foodie. So when Mooney Farms contacted me about trying out their Bella Sun Luci sun dried tomato products I was was not sure what to say. I really had no idea how to use sun dried tomatoes in the first place. I had eaten dishes made with sun dried tomatoes in a few restaurants but I hated as many as I liked. Then I started to feel challenged. Could I find delicious and easy uses for the sun dried tomato? Of course I could! This turkey meatloaf is the result and I think it turned out to be pretty tasty.

I was quite happy when I got my product package from Mooney Farms because it contained a pretty good variety of sun dried tomato products. They also sent me some information about the company which I really appreciated because I like to know a little about the companies I buy from. I was happy to see that Mooney Farms is a family owned business. I come from a small business family and I truly respect family-owned businesses.

One cool thing about the Bella Sun Luci jars is that they each come with several recipes ideas. The Sun Dried Tomato Pesto had an Italian meatloaf idea and I used that as a starting point for this recipe. I simplified the recipe, making it more child-friendly for my picky kids. This recipe is quite different from how I usually make meatloaf and I realize it looks a bit like carrot cake, but it was so good. My kiddos gobbled it right up (get it, turkey meatloaf, gobbled?).

Before I give you the recipe, let me just say that I am in love with the Bella Sun Luci tomato halves and now eat them right out of the bag like they are potato chips. So good! They are not used in the recipe below, but I had to mention them since they are so delicious.

Italian Turkey Meatloaf with Sun Dried Tomato Pesto

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds ground turkey

1 garlic clove, minced

1 carrot, chopped finely

¼ tsp salt

pepper, to taste

3/4 cup bread crumbs

1 egg

1/4 cup tomato ketchup

1/4 cup Bella Sun Luci Sun Dried Tomato Pesto

1 cup mozzarella cheese

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Combine all ingredients, except cheese, in a large bowl.

Place the mixture into a loaf pan and bake for 45 minutes.

Remove from oven and carefully drain off some of the grease (optional).

Top with Mozzarella cheese and return to oven for 5-10 minutes or until the cheese is completely melted.

Notes:

Feel free to alter the ingredients amounts to your tastes. It is pretty hard to mess up meatloaf.

Consider adding grated mozzarella to the meatloaf itself. The cheese on top of the meatloaf is good, but I think it tastes great inside the meatloaf as well.

I always drain the grease out of a meatloaf near the end of cooking. If you do that, please be careful not to burn yourself or dump your dinner in the sink.

I love the Bella Sun Luci products and I think you will, too. Bella Sun Luci products can be bought at various US stores, through Amazon.com or at the Bella Sun Luci Online Store. Check out their website for recipes and to enter the recipe contest going on right now (with a prize of $2,500).

Use the Rafflecopter form below to enter to win a lovely box of Bella Sun Luci sun dried tomato products. Two of you will win!

I am so excited to bring you this guest post today. Kendra Thornton is a renown travel expert and the former Director of Corporate Communications at Orbitz.com, one of the nation’s largest travel agencies. Today she is sharing ideas on involving your children in travel plans and making the trip memorable for the whole family.

Kendra Thornton: Travel advocate, TV spokesperson, PR businesswoman, proud wife and mama of 3. I am a long time travel expert who has been packing my bags and traveling the world since I was 3 months old! I’ve found my utmost desire in life is right here in my own home. I have taken my excitement for travel and brought it to you with some of my favorite travel tips and tricks. Enjoy!

Creating a Memorable Vacation Starts with Involving Your Children

If you want your children to truly treasure your upcoming family vacation, get them involved in the planning process. By giving your children a role in planning their trip, they’ll not only feel excited about your upcoming vacation but gain exposure to the decision making process as well. You’ll be able to enjoy quality time together as a family if your children are truly engaged with your travel plans.

1. Ask for Destination Input

Start involving your children in your upcoming vacation by asking them to write their own list of awesome vacation attractions. Although some destinations, such as Antarctica, will not be feasible for your family, you should get some interesting responses that will help shape the trip. Pay attention to the common themes in the suggestions. For example, if your son lists several national parks, try to include outdoor recreation in your itinerary. Work together to make the final decision on your destination.

Further, make sure your destination is kid friendly. It can be a struggle to find a location that is fun for the kids and for mom and dad. If you find yourself in this situation, try exploring family friendly resorts. Resorts geared toward families are located all over and cater to a variety of interests, from skiing to swimming and even horseback riding. When my husband and I decided to take our three to Hawaii, we chose a family friendly resort that was still ranked amongst Honolulu’s top hotels. Including your kids in the decision process and keeping all of your interests in mind when booking accommodations will make for your best vacation to date.

2. Decide How to Remember Your Trip

Souvenirs are a great way to remember vacation but choosing the right kind of vacation token is key. There are a variety of crafts and interactive entertainment that will provide your whole family with a lifetime of memories in addition to your memento. Look into taking a pottery class while at the beach or designing a 2013 Smith Family Extravaganza t-shirt. These souvenirs will not only last longer but hold more meaning if you are all working together.

3. Plan Your Transport Entertainment

So you’ve decided to take a road trip. To avoid the inevitable “Are We There Yet’s” try making the ride part of your vacation. Get the kids involved before you leave and have them map out a couple places along your route they’d like to explore. In our era of GPS technology, just folding a map is a foreign concept let alone reading one. Use this opportunity as a chance to teach your kids the basics of travel and give them some say over where you go. This will get them excited for the ride and the end destination. Your options can vary from a quick picnic lunch near a beautiful lake to South Carolina’s infamous South of the Border Highway Oasis.

4. Turn History Into An Adventure

Museums are a hard sell with kids. But there are some cities like D.C., Philadelphia or Boston that you really can’t neglect the history. If you decide to visit a historically rich city, such as Williamsburg VA, your children might get bored while you visit the city’s historic attractions. To add some fun to these educational destinations, plan a scavenger hunt with your children. Urban Adventure Quest allows you to download an interactive scavenger hunt that turns your bland tour into an adventure using your smart phone. Spanning over 20 cities, this hand held guide will expose you to all of your destination’s historical landmarks with clues and hints to make the experience engaging for a large range of ages. Each time your children discover a clue, reward them with a treat or small prize.

5. Start a Vacation Blog

Setting up a vacation blog before you leave is a great way to let your children share their vacation experiences. Give each child their own profile on the blog so that they share their own voice. Work with your children to plan their entries before you leave. While on your vacation, help your children upload videos and pictures after each day of the trip. This is a great project for kids traveling during the school year who may miss a few days and also an excellent way to share their adventure with extended family. After the trip is over, you and your family will treasure the blog as a digital scrapbook.

Thanks for sharing these fantastic ideas, Kendra!

I live in Arizona where the sun shines bright. A little too bright if you ask me. In fact, Phoenix is one of the top 10 American cities for UV danger. Most of us work hard to make sure our children are wearing sunscreen, but many of us do not require our kiddos to wear eye protection when they are outdoors. Last week I participated a webinar for The Vision Council on behalf of The Motherhood and we discussed eye health and the damage that UV rays can do to your eyes (and your kiddos’ eyes). I learned many tips about protecting eyes from UV rays and some of the facts presented surprised me. For example, did you know that scratched sunglasses allow UV light to filter through to your eyes?

After listening to Dr. Adamopoulos discuss this important issue, I felt a sense of urgency to share everything I had learned with Celebrating Family readers. Seriously, this is a big deal. Here are some of the facts that were discussed.

Children receive three times the annual sun exposure of adults and are especially vulnerable to UV-related harm

Over half of parents do not utilize sunglasses to protect their children’s eyes from UV exposure

Cumulative exposure to UV radiation can result in blurry or poor vision and in serious cases, cataracts and macular degeneration

Ground surfaces can reflect high amounts of UV radiation and redirect rays to unsuspecting adults and children (even the shade can’t protect against reflected UV)

Only 12 percent of adults rated UV protection as the most important factor around a recent purchase

That last fact really doesn’t surprise me. Most people I have spoken to about this assume that a dark lens protects the best, but the truth is that the darkness doesn’t matter much. The shades my daughter is wearing in the picture above provide 100% UV protection, but they are pink in color. The fact is, dark shades with no UV protection actually damage your eyes since they allow your pupil to dilate which lets the UV rays in. Let that sink in for a minute. The sunglasses you bought because they were cheap, or cute, or dark, might actually be hurting your eyes. Always look for the 100% UV sticker when you buy sunglasses and buy from a reputable source. If you have sunglasses that you are not sure about, you can take them into your optometrist and ask if they have a UV meter to test your glasses with.

The fact is, dark shades with no UV protection actually damage your eyes since they allow your pupil to dilate which lets the UV rays in.

Here is a useful info-graphic with more details. Look it over and pin it (if you are a pinner that is) to make sure more people learn about this important topic.

I sincerely hope that you are newly motivated to protect your children’s eyes from sun damage. I know I am trying to make wearing sunglasses a standard part of being outdoors in my family. Here is a picture of my kiddos at Pat’s Run earlier this year. Don’t they look cool in their 100% UV protected glasses?

Sometimes something as simple as a hard boil egg gets the best of me. I’ve tried several methods for getting the perfectly cooked hard boiled egg, but they always failed until I figured out this method. I’ve heard some people just boil the heck out of the egg resulting in that green ring around the yolk (there is nothing wrong with that, but it’s just not appetizing in a salad). I’ve seen people cook them in the oven…why would I want to heat up the house and waste all that energy on an egg! I promise this is the easiest way to get the perfect result.

Before I share my secret, I’m dying to tell you about the huge 16 week cooking series I have going on over at AMFT! It’s all about going back to basic cooking and learning how to create some basic foods from scratch. Many of us grew up in a society of packets and fast foods, so join me in learning how to prepare simple from scratch recipes from pie crust to the perfect brownie to roasting a chicken! Y’all will love it! Come on over to Cooking 101 and then join the Facebook group to get individual help from me and others group members!

Let’s get back to cooking the perfect hard boiled egg, shall we?

Hard Boiled Eggs

1 dozen eggs

Large stock pot with a lid

Water

Gently place eggs in a large stock pot. Start filling the pot with cool water until the eggs are completely covered with water and water is at least one inch above the top of the eggs.

Place stock pot on stove over high heat and bring pot to a rolling boiling (meaning the water continuing boils hard). Once this occurs, cover the pot and turn heat off. Let eggs sit in hot water for 15 minutes.

After the eggs sit in the hot water bath, gently remove eggs with a slotted spoon to a colander and run cool water over the eggs. Once eggs are cool, peel them for immediate use or place them in the refrigerator to use throughout the week.

Del Monte is a household name and one that I grew up with. Though I tend to use fresh fruits and vegetables I do buy canned and keep them on hand for conveniences’ sake. I was excited when I was contacted by Del Monte and asked to create a few recipes using their canned products. They asked me to gather some friends and put together some ideas and we came up with several yummy recipes. I also have the pleasure of hosting a giveaway for a fun Del Monte prize pack for one lucky Celebrating Family reader.

Most of us have served canned vegetables as a side dish and eaten canned fruit right from the can, but I challenge you to think bigger! Remember, canned fruits and vegetables are canned at the peak of ripeness and contain the same essential nutrients as fresh. Also, canned fruit and vegetables are affordable and convenient so why not use them in your main dishes, desserts, and appetizers? Check out these Del Monte canned creations we came up with and read through for the giveaway.

Peach Parfait

If you have a craving for peaches when they are not in season (or affordable) why not try this easy and fun treat? Simply layer drained canned peaches with vanilla yogurt and top with blueberries.

Easy As Shepherd’s Pie

This is an easy spin on shepherd’s pie and is a little different but quite tasty.

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes

2 tablespoons butter

1/4 cup milk

1 egg yolk

1 tsp salt

freshly ground black pepper

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/2 cup chopped onion

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground turkey or beef

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 can beefy mushroom or cream of mushroom soup

1 can Del Monte corn, drained

1 can Del Monte green beans, drained

1 can Del Monte diced tomatoes, drained (optional)

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a casserole dish with nonstick spray.

Peel the potatoes and cut into 1/2 inch dice. Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 12 minutes. Drain the potatoes and pour them into a bowl, add butter. Combine milk, egg yolk and add the mixture and the salt and pepper to the potatoes and mash until potatoes are almost smooth.

While potatoes are cooking, prepare the pie filling. Heat the olive oil over medium high heat. When oil is heated, add the onions and saute for 3 minutes. Add the garlic and saute for a few minutes before adding in the ground meat. Stir the meat and cook until it is browned.

Add in the canned soup and the drained canned vegetables one can at a time and stir until combined and heated through.

Add the mixture to the casserole dish and top with the mashed potatoes. Make sure to completely cover the meat filling with the potatoes so it is sealed up.

Bake for 30 minutes or until the top begins to brown. Let it sit and cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Pear and Vanilla Ice Cream

This idea sounded a little strange when it was presented to me but it turned out to be so good! If you ever find yourself asking what you can do with canned pears (other than fruit salad) try this out.

Open and drain a can of pear halves. Place the pear flat side up and place a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Drizzle chocolate syrup over it and serve immediately.

Those recipes are more exciting than simply opening up a can and heating it up right? I hope you try them out and love them. Make them your own and alter them however you are inclined.

Now for the giveaway. Del Monte is provding a prize pack to one lucky winner. The gift pack will include:

(1) can Del Monte® Cut Green Beans

(1) can Del Monte® Diced Tomatoes

(1) can Del Monte® Pear Halves

(1) can Del Monte® Sliced Peaches

1 can strainer

To enter, leave a comment letting me know one way you use canned fruit or vegetables. One entry per person and open to US residents age 18+ only. Ends June 6, 2013 at midnight MST. Void where prohibited. Good luck!

I love baked potatoes. As a vegetarian, baked potatoes are often my go-to menu item when I visit a steakhouse with family and friends. Most good steakhouses make amazing baked potatoes but, unfortunately, many restaurants and regular folks do not know how to make the perfect baked potato. I cannot remember where I learned this method but I have been baking potatoes this way for several years and they always turn out perfect.

The Perfect Baked Potato

Ingredients

1 large Russet potato

olive oil or canola oil

kosher salt or sea salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place the racks on the upper and lower thirds of the oven.

Scrub the potato under running water

Dry the potato and, using a fork, pierce the potato 6-8 times. This will allow steam to escape during baking.

Brush the potato with the oil, making sure it is completely covered.

Sprinkle salt onto the entire surface of the potato.

Place the potato directly onto the upper rack. Place a baking sheet on the lower oven rack (to catch the drips).

Bake for one hour. Potato is done when the skin feels crispy and the inside soft.

Baking time may vary as more potatoes are added.

Take a look at that skin! The main reason I love this method of making baked potatoes is that the skin turns out so perfectly. I hate getting a baked potato with a soggy and tasteless skin. What a waste!

Here is my favorite way to cut open a baked potato. Others do it by making one cut across the whole potato but I prefer this method because it exposes more of the flesh of the potato, ensuring my ability to add butter to as much of the potato as possible. Yum.

Kids spend a lot of time looking at screens these days, so when I was offered a membership at Curiosityville.com in exchange for a review of the site, I hesitated. But after learning a little about Curiosityville, I decided to go ahead and check it out. Curiosityville is an online learning program that is aimed at children ages three through eight years old. It combines learning, play, and technology that is personalized and with results that are reported to the parents.

Curiosityville is loaded with exciting and engaging activities for the kids. Children can select any of the five characters to play with as they navigate though the program. Each character is from a different place in the world and has its own specialty. Rosie, for example, loves science.

My five year old daughter just finished kindergarten and is in love with learning. She loves all of Curiosityville’s games including this one where a crab catches words with the correct sounds.

Even though the program is aimed at children ages three to eight, my nine-year-old son has been playing with it, too. Many of the games are too easy for him, but he is enjoying several of them including a very fun space game that teaches about space while he battles asteroids and other obstacles. During play, children earn badges and apples for their work. One wonderful aspect of Curiosityville is that children can give the apples they earn to causes they support. Those apple mean real money for the selected charities. While children play they will learn and they will also get the opportunity to help charities. You really cannot beat that. In addition, they will not tire of the games because the content is updated weekly.

Two other program features that separate Curiosityville from other online learning games are the parent updates and personalization. As children play the games update to their skill level and preferences. This keeps your child engaged and challenged. In addition, the Learning Tree and parent update notices let you know how your child is doing, what they are playing, how much time they spend playing, and other important information. Here is an example of the learning tree. We have not been members of Curiosityville for very long so the tree is a little bare, but the more your child plays, the more details you will see here. You also have the option of getting learning updates via email.

I mentioned that I think kids spend too much time in front of screens these days. I stand by that. However, what time your kids do spend in front of screen should be worthwhile and I think Curiosityville is a good fit for families who want to entertain and educate their children. One useful feature of Curiosityville is that when your child reaches a certain amount of playtime the game tells them to turn it off. Each age group has a preset time and you can go in and alter those times if you want to. For my daughter’s age group that preset time is 30 minutes per day. When she reaches 30 minutes of playtime she gets a message that says she has played a while in Curiosityville now she needs to go explore her own world.

So far we are loving Curiosityville and I encourage you to try it out. I am not the only one recommending the program. Curiosityville has received the following awards:

• ON for Learning, Common Sense Media
• Best in Family-Friendly Media, Moms Best Award
• 2012 Media of the Year, Creative Child Magazine
• Perfect Score (5 Out of 5 Stars, 3 Out of 3 Books), Common Sense Media
• Parent Tested Parent Approved Award, Parent Tested Parent Approved Media
• 2012 Best in Class Award, Interactive Media Awards
• Mom’s Best Award, Mom’s Best Award
• 2012 Tillywig Brain Child Award, Tillywig Toy Awards

Aside from all of those awards it is good to know that Curiosityville has been created in partnership with National Geographic, Johns Hopkins University, and other learning experts. Check the program out. I think you and your children will like it!

It is no secret that I have a lot to learn about cake decorating. Nonetheless, I love to decorate cupcakes. My son usually requests creative cupcakes for his class birthday party and some of his past requests have included a giant snake, ocean cupcakes, and dirt cupcakes with a gummy worm in them. Those were all pretty easy for me. This year, however, he is into Ninjago which is a little more specific and detailed. Everything I saw on Pinterest looked too difficult for my skill level but he really wanted Lego Ninjago cupcakes so I decided to give a try.

I found two very cute cupcake ideas that I liked. Wendy has some nice cupcakes with Lego inspired candies over on Around My Family Table and Christy has some awesome Ninjago cupcakes (and cool cookies!) over at Christy’s Savories. With some design ideas in mind I got to work making the cupcakes.

Lego Ninjago Cupcakes

Supplies Needed

Baked and cooled cupcakes:

Choose your favorite cupcake recipe and prepare the cupcakes as directed. Here is my favorite chocolate cake recipe and an amazing banana cake recipe. It it okay to fill the cupcake liners up high for the Lego candy cupcakes, but you will want the Green Ninja cupcakes to be relatively flat so only fill those up 2/3 of the way or so.

Buttercream frosting: homemade is best as you can adjust the consistency.

Yellow icing color.

One can of green decorating icing like this (or whatever ninja color you want).

Block candies (available at many candy stores where candy is sold in bulk).

Black sparkle gel.

Instructions

For the Lego cupcakes I simply added the icing color to the buttercream frosting and then frosted each cupcake. After they were frosted I added the Lego candies to the top.

For the ninja cupcakes I applied a very thin layer of the yellow frosting from the Lego cupcakes on each cupcake. Then I iced the ninja hood onto each cupcake using the decorating icing. This got easier and the cupcakes got better looking as I went. You could really tell which ninjas were the first ones made (poor little guys). Be sure to leave an opening in the hood so that you can add the eyes and eyebrows using the black sparkle gel.

These cupcakes turned out good enough to delight my son and his classmates. What more could I ask for?

Do your children love Ninjago? Which ninja is their favorite?
