Put A Crown In Your Name On Twitter

I had previously written an article called How to put stars and smileys in Twitter posts. I have been so busy that I really had not written much. I did notice today that people were starting to put a crown near their name. If you want to put any type of symbol near your name, the easiest way to do this is to just do a search of HTML special character codes. You should be able to find this easily. So for you Twitter royalty out there, here is are the HTML codes for crowns (based on chess pieces). Enjoy.

Just put an & before each # to make it convert to the symbol.

Celebrities You Never Knew Were On Twitter

Everyone knows who the top Celebs are that are on Twitter, Right? Lady Gaga with like 14 million followers and right behind her is Justin Beieber with about 11 million. What about other celebrities that you know, but did not know they were on Twitter. Because for what ever reason they are not "In your face" on the thing. I thought I would write about some of them and see if I can help them get some more followers. Hey, why not! Celebs, if your are out there, you need to help yourself by talking to the peeps. Social Networking is about being social, so you won't get any followers if you don't mention the fans once in a while.

Anyways, Randy's only got about 700 followers right now and doesn't really answer his @ replies. If you are a fan he has made a little comeback on Sons of Anarchy this season.

Now you might be asking yourself, how do I know this guy? Some of you old dudes might remember a movie called "Cool Runnings" with John Candy about the Jamaican bobsled team. No, Devon was not it the movie, but he was one of the original members of the team that inspired the movie. Now Devon is a motivational speaker, author, and all around nice guy. He signed a copy of his book for my son. I found a copy of the movie in Wal-mart and had to pick it up so that when the kids get big they can watch it. This way people know you are the real deal. Looks like he's got a new album and you can keep up with the new music and Jeff's guest appearances by following him on Twitter.

While we are at it let's not forget about Beau Bridges @BeauBridges1. His account is not verified by Twitter, but followed by brother Jeff, so that's good enough for me.

Music Note and Song in Tweet on Twitter

I get a lot of questions from our readers about different things they see on Twitter. Someone asked me the other day about the music notes and links to a song. There are a couple of different ways you can do this. You can put quite a few different symbols in your Tweets buy just typing a simple code. For a music note you use ♫. For the full list check out How To Put Stars and Smileys In Twitter Posts.

Another way someone may be doing this is via blip.fm. When you sign up for a blip.fm account, you can link it with your Twitter account. When you share a video in blip.fm it will also share your post to your Twitter with a music note and the link to the video.

So I am doing my morning Twitter reads in my Hootsuite account this morning and someone I follow mentioned @Charliesheen. I had not seen him on Twitter before so I had to check it out. I look this morning and he has over 1.7 million followers and only 35 Tweets! I am thinking am I missing something here so do some more reading. I found some articles stating that Charlie Sheen had set a new Guiness World Record for Twitter. The record was for being the person who had the “Fastest Time to Reach 1 Million Followers”. Sheen reached the million followers in 25 hours and 17 minutes.

Wow, you don't realize how fast the internet really is until you see something like this. So far Sheen is keep up the Tweets.

Unfollow People Not Following Back Twitter

With the new Twitter API rules it is getting harder to mass follow or mass unfollow users. Right now I really have no idea if I am going to follow too many people and get flagged. I was using SocialOomph, and it used to auto unfollow people that stopped following you for free. I am not sure if you can do it with the pro version, but it is not working now on the free version.

I started using ManageFlitter and that helps a little. You can only load about 5,000 follows, but it is free and will let you easily unfollow people that are not following you back. Most websites lately are giving you a warning if you try to mass change more than 50 followers at one time.

To clean up my old followers I used FollowerHub. It does not mass unfollow for free, but it will give you a list of some of the people that are not following you that ManageFlitter misses. Then you can just manually unfollow them.

GeoHot on Twitter

A few iPhone folks knew who GeoHot or George Hotz was until recently. Now a lot of people know who he is. He is now famous for posting information about hacking the PS3. With all the heat GeoHot had closed down his Twitter account in July and his blogger blog. Of course there are a bunch of gehot clones out there now. Sony is now in the process of taking legal action against George Hotz and several others in regards to the PS3 jailbreak info that was being posted on the blog.

Twydroid and UberTwitter, now called UberSocial, are now available again in the for the Android and BlackBerry. The two apps were blocked by Twitter on last Friday for violating the Twitter's terms of service.

Inproper Use of #Cairo Hashtag This Week

The Cairo hashtag was a trending topic this week in response to the turmoil in Egypt. Usually when something is trending, people looking for followers will post unrelated things and hope someone will notice them. Well this week Kenneth Cole jumped on the trend wagon with a Tweet that many found inappropriate.

KC posted this Tweet Thursday morning: "Millions are in an uproar in #Cairo. Rumor is they hear our new spring collection is now available online at http://bit.ly/KCairo.b - KC"

Manage Your Twitter Followers

It does not take long if you actively work on getting Twitter followers to suddenly be following more people than are following you back. When I had under 2,000 it was pretty easy to unfollow a couple of people at a time. With the new API rules it is a little more difficult to do mass changes than in the past. As of now my biggest account @couponcodelady has over 17,000 followers.

I recently started using ManageFlitter and it has helped me clean up my followers a lot. You just connect with your Twitter account and it loads 5,000 of your followers so you can get a look at who is not following you. I logged in today and 201 people I was following were not following me. You just check a box by the follower and ManageFlitter can unfollow them for you. The only disadvantage is that it only loads the last 5,000 followers. I have found a lot of the original people I followed who follow back have enough followers now that they are not following anyone back (not cool!).

I also used FollowerHub to clean up some of my old followers. It shows who is not following you back, but you only get to unfollow a few via the API for free. You can used the list to manually go to their Twitter page and unfollow each manually. It takes a while, but a litte at a time you can get them cleaned up.

How To Put Stars and Smileys In Twitter Posts

Hey, have you noticed lately that people have been putting check marks or music notes in their Twitter Posts? I noticed it too and was wondering how people were doing it. At first I thought it was probably a Twitter client program that was letting you do it, but then I found that it was really easy. The other day one of the people I follow had a post called Special Characters Are Lucky Charms For Twitter ♥ ☾ ★ ♣. It was an informative post that explained you just need to use some simple codes to put the special characters in Twitter. Here is the listing of popular characters you can used to put the "charms" in your Twitter posts. You can either copy and paste the character or type in the &code to insert them into a Twitter post. This works well on the web, but may not work with some clients. Thanks to SEM Clubhouse for the list.

Post Twitter Tweets in The Future

If you are like most people who are using Twitter as an addition to your blog or website, you find it difficult to spread your Twitter tweets through out the day. A lot of times when I work on my blog The Coupon Code Lady I write a bunch of articles at once and then I have a time when I sit and post some tweets to Twitter. The problem is I really don't want to sit and post a bunch of tweets in a row. The best option for me I think is to post my tweets through out the day.

My website is a coupon code website and I like to spread my tweets out across the day with different coupon codes. I started just sending my RSS feed of my blog posts to Twitter, but now I also like to tweet about specific items. The easiest way I have found to do this is to use Twuffer. Twiffer is a web tool that lets you schedule your Twitter tweets into the future. For me it seems to work pretty nice. I simply open my webpage and then open a Twuffer page. I copy the links for the coupons I want to tweet for the day and schedule a tweet for every two hours or so. It is that easy. First thing in the morning or whenever I have time I schedule about 5 or 6 tweets and it looks like I am tweeting through out the day. If this is something you need to do, check it out.

Ongoing denial-of-service attack 32 minutes ago

We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly.

The status said the site was up, but I could not log in.

Here is the definition of denial of service attack from Wikipedia:

A denial-of-service attack (DoS attack) or distributed denial-of-service attack (DDoS attack) is an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Although the means to carry out, motives for, and targets of a DoS attack may vary, it generally consists of the concerted efforts of a person or persons to prevent an Internet site or service from functioning efficiently or at all, temporarily or indefinitely. Perpetrators of DoS attacks typically target sites or services hosted on high-profile web servers such as banks, credit card payment gateways, and even root nameservers.

One common method of attack involves saturating the target (victim) machine with external communications requests, such that it cannot respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly as to be rendered effectively unavailable. In general terms, DoS attacks are implemented by either forcing the targeted computer(s) to reset, or consuming its resources so that it can no longer provide its intended service or obstructing the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately.

Twitter is Down This Morning

As of 10 AM EST Twitter was still down. I checked the Twitter status page and all it said was the site was down and "We are determining the cause and will provide an update shortly." Our celebrity pages pull the feeds from Twitter so if you go to them the Twitter status will be blank. We will post an update when we hear more.
