What is Frottage Painting?

If you’ve never heard of frottage, it’s basically the faux paint technique where you press film or fabric (any thin material) into a glaze then peel it off. The word frottage comes from the French and means “rub”. Frottage produces a richly varied texture that’s very different from what you can achieve with a brush or roller.

You can virtually use any material to create the texture. An inexpensive material to use is plastic food wraps, newspaper or dry-cleaner bags. But if you’re looking to use fabric, there are inexpensive dropcloths you can use. Plus, get creative with fabrics like burlap or lace for a highly textured contrast.
