While cemeteries have long served as a place in which we can honor and remember our loved ones, they are also often places that showcase architecture, and landscape design. In the late 19th century, cemeteries evolved from overcrowded and unsanitary urban spaces into rural, park-like social centers. In cities that lacked public parks, cemeteries became popular destinations for picnics, holidays, and other family gatherings.

Text description provided by the architects. The Sablonceaux cemetery extension project represented for us the first opportunity to intervene on a protected site. A way to reaffirm our point of view on an located architecture, able to jostle and surprise while respectfully insert in its context. An architecture that is both touching and expressive.

The new funeral home is located in a plot bordering the local cemetery. We understand the new building as an enlargement of the existing enclosure; the hermetic closing of the cemetery is extended and a new isolated space of privacy and retreat is defined. Public spaces and funeral parlors are articulated throughout some private patios, adding light, air circulation and allowing sky views from the interiors. These patios will end covered of vegetation generating a new interior landscape. We build contrasting the existent. We plan the construction using a prefabricated system of reinforced concrete walls and hollow-core slabs, big glass walls and light dry partitions. This system allowed us to occupy the whole plot in only 4 months. The effective use of passive energy solutions, such like natural lighting and cross ventilation, the big thermal inertia of the building shell and the vegetation as a solar filter, allows us to minimize the use of active and technological elements to sati… continue

Life After Death: Organic Burial Pods Turn Human Bodies into Living Trees

Amidst a huge array of natural burial initiatives and urban cemetery alternatives, the Capsula Mundi stands out as a sustainable solution that serves wishes of the deceased as well as the land of the living.

Italian designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel developed this solution in part to challenge constrictive existing laws surrounding burials in their home country.

Here are some of my photos of a new Columbarium at Center Cemetery in Norfolk, Connecticut, by RKLA | Robin Key Landscape Architecture with stone artist Dan Snow. The 100-foot-long dry stone wall with 50 columbarium niches weaves between four mature trees at the far end of the 250-year-old cemetery.

Muslim Burial Ground Peace Garden at Horsell Common by terra firma consultancy

Last November we were proud to attend the opening ceremony of the Muslim Burial Ground Peace Garden at Horsell Common, Woking by HRH The Earl of Wessex. We became involved as the garden’s designers in 2013. Some of you may have seen the BBC 1 programme ‘Britain’s Muslim Soldiers’ broadcast early in the new year which followed the progress of the project through the eyes of its two main instigators Dr Zafar Iqbal (of Woking Borough Council) and Elizabeth Cuttle (of the Horsell Common Preservation Society) and commemorates the vast and vitally important contribution made to the Allied war effort by the armies of the Indian subcontinent. This is a site with a fascinating history and together with the nearby Shah Jahan Mosque , the oldest in the country and by the way, built in 1889 by a Jew (the extraordinary Dr Gottleib Wilhelm Leitner, but that is another story in itself), sets a shining example of bringing together different faiths and culture within this country.

The living play karaoke among headstones, hang their laundry from mausoleums, put on plays in crypts and golf right on top of graves in multipurpose cemeteries around the world, where the dead are integrated into modern life instead of remaining in solemn roped-off spaces. In some cases, it’s happening due to sprawl, like the family graveyard in a Walmart parking lot in Georgia, but in others, it’s more deliberate. As we grapple with population growth and urbanization, alternate ideas for the burial of our dead are coming into focus, all seemingly sending the same message: life goes on.

When visiting a deceased loved one at this Tokyo cemetery, you’ll swipe a smart card upon arrival at the door so that the particular LED Buddha statue representing the correct vault will light up, making it easy to locate on a wall of identical figures. At Ruriden, a futuristic charnel house belonging to Koukoko-ji temple, cremated remains are kept in storage lockers in this unusually high-tech environment, eliminating the need for loved ones to maintain graves.

Open-Sided Shelter de Ron Shenkin Studio

The structure functions as a place of convergence of mourners and for the reading of eulogies prior to and during the burial. It's essential nature is that of a pavilion or open sided shelter and is located next to the cemetery. The building is comprised of two entrances, the smaller of the two serves the family of the deceased. The second and larger entrance serves the rest of the mourners, this entry allows easy access to the spacious building. One side of the front of the building remains open to the north. The positioning of the structure also allows, those mourners who prefer to remain at a distance, a sense of closeness to the proceedings and a shaded area that is not inside the structure itself.There are two exits leading to the burial lots, one of which is easily accessible and the other is via a flight of stairs. The structure has one solid stone wall to the west which serves to block any direct afternoon sunlight except what is allowed through via a long narrow window.The area in which the structure is situated was surrounded by orchards which were originally raised to make space for new residential and commercial building projects. During the design process we decided to take the surroundings into consideration By erecting a monument to the rural surroundings that were demolished for urban repurposing. The monument consists of an exposed concrete slab symbolizing the expansion of construction. The slab is stabilized by tree-shaped metal pillars denoting the trees that were cut down. One oak tree remains within the structure. The ceiling above the tree was left open to allow for the presence of the tree to create a dialogue between the living tree and the metal symbols.On the northern side of the building there is a line of concrete, beginning in the ground on the west side and climbing up through the window. Ascending to the roof, ceilings and walls and making its final decent back to the ground - like a man who comes from dust and to dust returns.

Most of us have likely had the opportunity to visit a cemetery at some point, and walked through the endless rows of cold marble headstones and weeping angel statues. An Italian design company called Capsula Mundi has a brilliant solution: burial pods made of natural starch plastic that nurture tree seeds as bodies break down. The natural decomposition process feeds the tree above, and over time, burial spaces can be transformed from desolate graveyards into lush memorial forests.

Vertical Cemetery Could Provide Norway With More Space to Bury the Dead

As time goes on, graveyard space is becoming more limited – and Norwegian designer Martin McSherry just proposed plans for a skyscraper cemetery to house the dead. The Royal Danish School of Architecture student created the vertical graveyard to provide a solution to the growing demand for burial space in Norway. The tower is encased within a metal exoskeleton and it has graveyards on every floor that provide space for eternal rest in the sprawling urban sky.
