The DC Center in collaboration with ETC invites you to attend our first event of the year, a play titled Charm on Thursday, January 26th 2017 at 8:00 PM at Mosaic Theater Company (1333 H STREET N.E., Washington, DC 20002)

The Play &quot;Charm&quot; is about:
Mama Darleena Andrews, a 67 year-old transgender woman and the inimitable etiquette instructor at &quot; The Center,&quot; an organization for Chicago&apos;s homeless and LGTBQ youth. Her students are as diverse in background as they are in identity, united by a feeling of other-ness in the heart of a city that&apos;s left them behind. But for &quot;Mama Darlin,&quot; triumph over poverty and prejudice begins with lacing up and fitting in--playing the part with class and with charm.

B&apos;Ellana Duquesne (The T Party) stars as &apos;Mama,&apos; inspired by the heartwarming true story of Chicago trans icon Miss Gloria Allen, under direction of visionary artist Natsu Onoda Power (The T Party).

Charm runs two hours and twenty minutes, with one fifteen minute intermission.
All discussions open to the public and begin immediately after the play ends.

Tickets are reserved at $15 a seat, and there will be 20 free tickets for those less fortunate.... contact shareese@thedccenter.org</summary>

<summary> You are invited to join The DC Center for the LGBT Community and Capital Pride Alliance for our event, Roar &amp; Restore: Community Conversations, this Saturday, December 10th 2016 from 12pm to 3pm at The Reeves Center (2000 14th St NW, Washington, DC 20009). The afternoon will be filled with conversation, reflection, collaboration, and restoration.

The results of November 8th&apos;s election have left our community feeling an entire spectrum of emotions--from devastation and concern, to hopefulness and determination. Regardless of where you might find yourself on that spectrum, we invite you to join us and engage other members of the community in an open and productive discussion. A brief schedule of the day is as follows:

An eat and greet with soup and beverages

Large group discussion, moderated by a facilitator

Affinity break-out groups, as determined by some of the most pressing LGBT issues/concerns (i.e., issues that affect the trans community, issues that affect LGBT people of color, issues that affect LGBT families, etc)

Artistic expression, both with small groups and individually

For more information about the event, please do not hesitate to contact our event coordinator, Cierra Buckner at cierrabuckner@thedccenter.org or by calling (202) 682-2245.

<summary> A message from sixth&amp;i about an upcoming book event:

On Wednesday, November 30 at 7:00 pm, sixth&amp;i is hosting an event with the celebrated transgender trailblazer, Kate Bornstein, who will discuss the updated edition of her book Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us. Profoundly ahead of its time when it was originally published in 1994, Gender Outlaw is the first book of gender theory written by a trans person.

Kate, who has recurring appearances on Caitlyn Jenner&apos;s show &quot;I Am Cait,&quot; was assigned male at birth and underwent gender confirmation surgery at age thirty-eight in 1986 to become a woman. She later came to realize that, at her core, she identified as neither male nor female. So she began to wonder: what if there are not two genders, but a whole spectrum? What if the gender binary is not only restricting trans people, but anyone who has ever felt like less than a perfect man or woman?

We hope you will join for a night of meaningful conversation as Kate shares personal insights and outlines her investigation into our notions of gender.

More information about the event can be found here.

<summary>Reel Affirmations XTRA is proud to present Women Who Kill, Friday, November 18th 2016!

Synopsis:
Morgan (Jungermann) and Jean (Ann Carr) work well together as hosts of their semi-famous true crime podcast because they didn&apos;t work, at all, as a couple. When Morgan strikes up a relationship with the mysterious Simone (Sheila Vand, importing substantial menace from her breakout role in A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night) their professional interest boils over into a cycle of suspicion, paranoia, and fear. Thankfully, Morgan has a confidant (maybe not her first choice given that she is in prison for murder). Women Who Kill is an adept and wry comedy on modern romance&apos;s hollow results set in an LGBTQ Brooklyn that pulls ample humor from awkward and, perhaps to confirmed Park Slopers, all-too-familiar situations. (Written by Loren Hammonds)

The film will be screened at The Human Rights Campaign Equality Center | 1640 Rhode Island Ave NW at 7pm.

<summary> National Geographic photographers have sparked change for over a century. Photographer Robin Hammond shares how platforms like Instagram are making it possible to amplify important stories and connect with audiences like never before--revolutionizing how we capture and consume world-changing photography.

Robin has been sparking change for his entire career, using his camera to record human rights and development issues around the globe through long-term photography projects. His work documenting the abuses under strongman Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe was featured in National Geographic magazine, displayed in an exhibit in Paris, and culminated in his first book, Your Wounds Will Be Named Silence. Robin has been awarded a W. Eugene Smith Fund Grant for Humanistic Photography, a World Press Photo prize, the Pictures of the Year International World Understanding Award, and four Amnesty International awards for human rights journalism.
