Leadership conversation with Gordon Brown

Admiral Willard celebrates Veterans Day at HKS

Last week, the Harvard Kennedy School Armed Forces Committee, in conjunction with CPL and the Belfer Center, was honored to host Admiral Robert F. Willard, Commanding Officer of United States Pacific Command, as the guest of honor for its annual Veterans Day Recognition Breakfast. In attendance at the breakfast were over 60 current Kennedy School students and National Security Fellows who have served or who continue to serve in every branch of our nation’s Armed Forces.

During his keynote address, Admiral Willard thanked the veterans for their service and commended each of them for their pursuit of academic excellence that will allow them to continue serving our nation in the future. He shared unique insights into the strategic importance of the area within the Pacific Command area of responsibility and what he saw as the critical issues in the future of the region.

At the conclusion of the breakfast, the veterans were joined by David Ellwood, Dean of Harvard Kennedy School, who thanked the students for their service to our nation and who also thanked Admiral Willard for his contribution to their learning. It was a memorable event for all involved, and a fitting tribute to the many Kennedy School veterans whose service in the military marks only the beginning of a lifetime of public service to our nation and world.

Regan Turner is currently an MPP/MBA candidate at Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School and is a Dubin Fellow.

Interview with Nate Fick

We were honored to welcome back Nate Fick (MPA/MBA '08), last month, to speak with current George Leadership Fellows about his experience as CEO of the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), a defense and national security think tank in Washington, D.C.

A former Marine Corps officer, Fick served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and received great praise for his memoir about the experience, One Bullet Away—a New York Times bestseller. After receiving a joint degree from Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School in 2008, Fick joined CNAS as a fellow and Chief Operating Officer. He assumed his current leadership role in 2009.

Hear what Fick has to say about leadership lessons learned in the military, future threats to American security, and his portrayal in HBO's Generation Kill in an interview with CPL.

Applications due Monday for Dubin NYC Trip

This past year, in partnership with CPL, financier and philanthropist Glenn Dubin created the Dubin Program for Emerging Leaders, which provides generous opportunities for Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) students who have demonstrated a commitment to transformative leadership for the public good.

As part of the program, the Dubin Program for Emerging Leaders is hosting an visit to New York City from January 19–22, 2011 for a selected group of HKS students who are committed to leadership and public service. Selected participants will meet with local, national, and international leaders from the nonprofit, public, and private sectors to understand how these leaders and their institutions are working to address the critical issues they face. in addition to Glenn Dubin, anticipated speakers also include NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg; NYC Schools Chancellor Joel Klein; Teach for America founder Wendy Kopp, Harlem Children’s Zone President & CEO Geoffrey Canada; Dr. Angela Diaz, director of the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center; leadership representatives from the United Nations, the Robin Hood Foundation, Highbridge Capital Management; and more.

This field visit will take place from mid-afternoon Wednesday, January 19, through mid-afternoon Saturday, January 22, with meetings running throughout the days and evenings. Students must commit to participating and traveling with the group for the full experience.

Applications will be accepted until 12 P.M. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 15th ~~5 P.M. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12th~~. Degree-seeking HKS students in residence during the 2010-11 Academic Year are eligible to apply.

In an attempt to dig even deeper into these trends, as well as the Index's six years of accumulated data, we asked our director David Gergen to provide his own analysis.

Burton: What a trip!

Coming to Harvard was one the most exciting time of my life. The staff was wonderful and the accommodations were the best. I have never seen a hotel with a TV in the mirror! Walking around Cambridge was like being in a dream place. But it was real. I was there and I will always have the wonderful memory to reflect upon.

Receiving the Citizen Activist Award is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. Having faced so many forms of discrimination and oppression in the past, and fighting for so long to get beyond all that, this award lets me know that the effort put in has been worth it. I met so many young, eager, smart people at Harvard who are preparing themselves to be great leaders. I couldn't help but think of the women who live in the homes at A New Way of Life, and how their lives—and even my own—might have been different had we had opportunities to attend schools like Harvard.

I was honored that the students, faculty, and staff that I met took the time to listen to my story. I hope that it compels them to dream of heights beyond anything I've achieved, and to do so in the spirit of serving others. We all must take the circumstances we are presented with in life and use them to raise ourselves, and those around us, up. I have confidence that the young leaders at Harvard will do just that, and that we will mutually inspire one other to create a world that is peaceful, equitable, and where opportunities are available to everyone.

I wish I could individually thank each person who contributed to the wonderful three days that I enjoyed in Cambridge; I hope they know how grateful I am for this honor. Having a stamp of approval from the most prestigious academic institution in the nation—Harvard—makes me feel incredibly humbled.

PACOM Commander @ CPL on Wednesday

Admiral Robert F. Willard, Commander, U.S. Pacific Command (PACOM)—which covers over fifty percent of the world's surface area, nearly sixty percent of the world's population, thirty-six countries, twenty territories, and ten territories and possessions of the U.S.—comes to the Center for Public Leadership, next week, for a conversation with students on "Inspiring Civilian-Military Cooperation."

As Commander of PACOM, ADM Willard oversees over 300,000 military personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps. His visit is an excellent opportunity to discuss critical issues ongoing in the Pacific and beyond, how civilian and military leadership are both needed to address them, and how these two worlds interact. ADM Willard will offer insight from his experience, explaining today’s challenges in the field of military leadership with particular attention to the challenges of civil-military interaction and what needs to be done to overcome them.
