You are invited to join The DC Center for the LGBT Community and Capital Pride Alliance for our event, Roar & Restore: Community Conversations, this Saturday, December 10th 2016 from 12pm to 3pm at The Reeves Center (2000 14th St NW, Washington, DC 20009). The afternoon will be filled with conversation, reflection, collaboration, and restoration.

The results of November 8th's election have left our community feeling an entire spectrum of emotions--from devastation and concern, to hopefulness and determination. Regardless of where you might find yourself on that spectrum, we invite you to join us and engage other members of the community in an open and productive discussion. A brief schedule of the day is as follows:

An eat and greet with soup and beverages

Large group discussion, moderated by a facilitator

Affinity break-out groups, as determined by some of the most pressing LGBT issues/concerns (i.e., issues that affect the trans community, issues that affect LGBT people of color, issues that affect LGBT families, etc)

Artistic expression, both with small groups and individually

For more information about the event, please do not hesitate to contact our event coordinator, Cierra Buckner at cierrabuckner@thedccenter.org or by calling (202) 682-2245.

Please RSVP for the event, by visiting our Facebook event page here.

On Thursday, Oct. 6, Center Global, a program of the DC Center for the LGBT Community, will honor three local and international activists with solid records of advocating for LGBT human rights at home and abroad. The awards will be presented at Center Global's 4th Annual Reception.

This year's Global Advocate Award will be presented to Dr. Chloe Schwenke, an adjunct professor at two universities - Georgetown University and the University of Maryland - and a person working actively on behalf of and in solidarity with LGBTI persons in countries where they are most under threat. As a human rights and social inclusion activist, development practitioner, and academic with a career spanning more than three decades, she has worked and lived in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and here in the Washington, DC area. Chloe has served in a senior capacity with leading organizations including the U.S. Agency for International Development and Freedom House, and as a consultant to the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, on LGBTI issues, human rights, social inclusion, gender equality and female empowerment.

This year, Center Global will be honoring two individuals with the Global Courage Award. Paty Hernandez of El Salvador and Temitope "Temi" Oke originally from Nigeria are being recognized for their tireless efforts in promoting LGBT human rights, assisting vulnerable LGBTI populations in their home countries and continuing these efforts here in the United States.

Paty Hernandez served as director of a transgender advocacy group, Aspidh Rainbow, in El Salvador, for 20 years where the high murder rates and pervasive anti-trans violence makes it the most dangerous place in the region for transgender people to live. She fled to the U.S. in 2014 due to anti-trans violence and threats in her homeland, and is currently seeking asylum as she continues her work as a director at the non-profit Casa Ruby, which provides assistance for housing, health care, legal services and employment opportunities to LGBTI individuals.

Temi Oke served as an HIV prevention worker in Lagos State, Nigeria, for over four years. He arrived in the United States in early 2014 to seek asylum after the government began to criminalize LGBTI people. Temi has served as a program intern at the DC Center helping the volunteers of Center Global to coordinate and provide assistance to LGBT asylum seekers, asylees, and refugees through referrals to social support, medical services, food, housing/shelter, financial aid, transportation, and legal services. He is also a founder and active member of a support group exclusively for LGBT asylum seekers and asylees. Temi is currently a permanent resident of the United States, after being granted asylum in May 2014.

"Center Global is pleased to honor these individuals, who continue to advocate for the human rights of LGBTI people here in the U.S. and abroad," said Matthew Corso, Chair of Center Global. "With these awards, we hope to highlight the continuing battle for LGBTI human rights around the world and the important efforts of activists like Chole, Paty and Temi, who are fighting for equality every day in their own respective communities."

In more than 80 countries, the oppressive anti-LGBTI laws and social cultures make it unsafe for LGBTI people to live in their homeland, and they often seek asylum abroad. Center Global was formed in 2012 to help welcome LGBTI asylum seekers from other parts of the globe and provided assistance they need during the asylum process.

Center Global's 4th Annual Reception will be held on Thursday, October 6, from 6-8PM at the Chastleton Ballroom, 1701 16th Street, NW.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Center Global,

Save the date for Center Global's 4th Annual Reception on Thursday, October 6 from 6-8 pm! We are working on finalizing the venue, so stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks.

Please let your friends and colleagues now about this important event. Every dollar we raise goes towards supporting Center Global and the incredible work our volunteers undertake to help support LGBTI asylum seekers, asylees and refugees in the Washington area.

As we prepare for our Annual Reception, we are seeking nominations for two awards that will be presented at the reception. For the last three years, we've honored two individuals in our community who have made significant contributions to the work of advancing the concerns of LGBTI people around the world, and in particular who work to support asylum seekers, asylees and refugee here in the Washington, DC area.

The two awards we will be presenting this year are:
Center Global Advocate Award - presented to an individual or organization who has helped to advance the cause of global LGBTI human rights and support asylum seekers, asylees and refugees here in the United States.
Center Global Courage Award - presented to an asylum seeker, asylee or refugee who while in the diaspora has worked to support the cause of global LGBTI human rights and supported their fellow immigrants here in the United States.

The Center Global Executive Committee is accepting nominations for both awards until September 9th and will be announcing the awardees on or around September 15th. We invite your suggestions and recommendations by sending an email nominating an individual for either or both awards to matt@thedccenter.org

We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our awardees at our Annual Reception on Oct. 6 with you.

Center Global, a program of the DC Center for the LGBT Community, is seeking housing hosts for individuals who are seeking asylum from countries that are not safe for LGBT persons to live in. Housing hosts are asked to provide a private bedroom for a minimum of three months while these individuals (in some cases couples) are going through the asylum process. These are individuals who are unable to access other government services and lack support from family and friends from their home countries. There are several persons in need of immediate housing. For more information please contact Eric Scharf with Center Global at escharfdc@gmail.com.
