<summary> Each year as Americans we pause to remember the men and women who have given their lives in defense of our freedom. Once again this year on Veteran&apos;s Day, the DC LGBT community will come together to hold a wreath laying ceremony and memorial service at the Congressional Cemetery.

The ceremony is held at the grave of Technical Sergeant Leonard Matlovich in the LGBT section of the cemetery. Sgt. Matlovich was a Vietnam veteran who rose to fame in 1975 by becoming the first gay service member to publicly reveal his sexuality, challenging the military&apos;s exclusion on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans. He appeared on the cover of Time Magazine and the front page of The New York Times, speaking out for the rights of LGBT service members until his death in 1988. Adjacent to the grave for Leonard Matlovich is the grave for our friend, veteran, and local activist Frank Kameny.

Held in honor of the LGBT men and women who have served the U.S. as soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and coast guardsmen. This years&apos; service will be held on November 11th, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Congrtessional Cemetery. Please join us.

The theme of this year&apos;s pride event on June 8th at the Pentagon is &quot;Celebration!&quot;, and, in the spirit of a more inclusive celebration this year, DoDPride, the Department of Defense&apos;s LGBT employee resource group, are seeking to integrate the broader DoD LGBT community and allies through a social media campaign.

Video screens at the Pentagon event will display individual and group selfies from the community. Selfies will also be posted on the Department&apos;s official web special for Pride Month, and on the DoDPride website for the entire month. <summary>WASHINGTON, D.C.-The recent nomination by President Obama of Eric K. Fanning to be U.S. Secretary of the Army is a seminal moment in American and LGBT history; if confirmed by the Senate, Fanning would be the first openly gay secretary of a military branch.

On Wed., Oct. 7, the National Press Club will look back at a darker period in the nation regarding these issues.

Award-winning investigative journalist Michael Isikoff, who serves as Yahoo&apos;s chief investigative correspondent, will present his new documentary, &quot;Uniquely Nasty: The U.S. Government&apos;s War on Gays.&quot;

It explores a dark and little-known chapter in America&apos;s recent political past, when gays and lesbians were barred from working for the federal government and the FBI, through its &quot;sex deviates&quot; program, secretly collected hundreds of thousands of files on the sex lives of American citizens.

Following the screening, a distinguished panel will react to the film and some of its disclosures, including significant new information about the Cold War-era anti-gay blackmail plot that led to the suicide of Sen. Lester Hunt.

The event is free and sponsored by the National Press Club events committee; the screening will commence at 6:30 p.m., followed by the discussion from 7-8 p.m. The club is located at 529 14th St. N.W., 13th Floor, Washington, D.C.

<summary> THE DC LGBT CENTER TO HOLD SERVICE HONORING LGBT VETERANS

Washington, DC - Each year as Americans we pause to remember the men and women who have given their lives in defense of our freedom. This year on Veteran&apos;s Day, The DC LGBT Center&apos;s Center Military program will hold a wreath laying ceremony and memorial service.

Last year, Center Military held the ceremony at the grave of Technical Sergeant Leonard Matlovich in the LGBT section of the cemetery.

Held in honor of the LGBT men and women who have served the U.S. as soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, and coast guardsmen. This years&apos; service will be held on November 11th, 2015 at 11:00 AM. We will have more details to follow shortly. You can join us on our Facebook event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/1632207870372293/.

The National Press Club events committee, in collaboration with Investigative journalist Michael Isikoff, Yahoo's chief investigative correspondent, will present his new documentary, "Uniquely Nasty: The U.S. Government's War on Gays." on Wednesday, October 7th.

Isikoff's documentary explores a lesser known chapter in America's recent political past, when gays and lesbians were barred from working for the federal government and the FBI, through its "sex deviates" program, secretly collected hundreds of thousands of files on the sex lives of American citizens.

"Uniquely Nasty" includes never-before-seen government memos by legendary FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover (read by George Takei) and John Steele, a top lawyer for the U.S. Civil Service Commission (read by Matt Bomer) asserting that gays were "not suitable" for federal employment.

Following the screening, a distinguished panel will react to the film and some of its disclosures, including significant new information about the Cold War-era anti-gay blackmail plot that led to the suicide of Sen. Lester Hunt. The panel will also discuss why the subject the film explores is relevant to current issues of importance to LGBT Americans, including opportunities for running for elective office.

The moderator will be Marilyn Geewax, NPR senior business editor and member of the National Press Club's Board of Governors. Panel members will be Isikoff; Charles Francis, president, Mattachine Society of Washington, D.C.; Paul M. Thompson, partner, McDermott Will & Emery LLP; and Jaan Williams, director of domestic programs, Victory Fund and Institute.

Tickets for this event cost $5 for the general public and are free for members of the NPC. The screening will commence at 6:30 p.m., followed by the discussion from 7-8 p.m. The event is located at 529 14th St. N.W., 13th Floor, Washington, D.C.

<summary>Center Military invites our LGBTQ veterans to take part in GW&apos;s Interdisciplinary Student Community Prevention Enhancement Service(ISCOPES) and The Library of Congress&apos; Veterans History Project(VHP)!

About the Project:

Your story is very important to our nation! Center Military in partnership with the ISCOPES Veterans History Project Team will be having a series highlighting a monthly LGBTQ veteran. Veterans can choose to share their story via the Veterans History Project and/or Center Military&apos;s social media. The project will begin in September and you are able to sign up for the project by filling out the form HERE.

About VHP:

The mission of the Veterans History Project (VHP) is to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. The recorded stories of military veterans will be forever archived at the Library of Congress and made available to family members, researchers, and the general public. In the interest of capturing a broad range of experiences, VHP encourages participation of all LGBTQ veterans. As with all participating veterans, we encourage LGBTQ veterans to self-identify when telling their story. By doing so, historic evidence of their personal experience will be recorded, reflecting a fuller picture of American service during conflict. To find out more, please go to http://www.loc.gov/vets/about.html

About ISCOPES:

ISCOPES is service-learning program from the George Washington University. The VHP team is comprised of students, staff, and faculty dedicated to serving our veterans. The team would love to interview you and share your story. To find out more, please go to https://smhs.gwu.edu/iscopes/about
