We’re so excited to be one of the participants of the KidsWalk area of ArtWalk on the Bay! ArtWalk on the Bay is a FREE yearly art festival in San Diego, located at Hilton Bayfront Park. This year, the event is happening from 10am-5pm on September 10th and 11th, 2011.

KidsWalk will be located at the grassy area of the park, and includes fun, hands-on art activities for kids. Look for the tall, kinetic sail sculptures, and green pop-up canopies.

We’ll be pouring ceramic molds, as well as making paper mosaic flags. All of the activities at KidsWalk are free of charge! KidsWalk participants include us, as well as the following:
• ArtReach
• San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum
• RhythmWorx
• Art With Larisse
• San Diego Creative Weaver’s Guild

Aside from KidsWalk, attendees can enjoy looking at art by 100+ artists displaying their creations, live music, food vendors, and more! There’s a nice breeze at the location, and if you have little ones, you can easily push a jogger or stroller around the event. It’s a great way to spend the day!

The Hilton Bayfront Park is located just next to the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, which is just east of the San Diego Convention Center, and just south of Petco Park. The address is for the location is One Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101.

Parking is available for a special price of only $2 per day per space at an Ace parking lot, located at the northeast corner of Park Blvd. & Imperial Ave., next to Petco Park. Parking is also available in a structure just next to the lot near Petco Park for $10/day; at the Convention Center for $10/day; and at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront (call for rates).

If you park near Petco Park, you can easily walk along the Harbor Drive Bridge to the event. There’s even an elevator, so you can take a stroller. If you do take the bridge with a stroller, remember that on your way back, you’ll want to take the elevator to the 3rd floor (P3) to reach the bridge. It’s an easy walk, and when we’ve taken it, our kids enjoyed the view from the bridge.

We’re very excited to be conducting the art project for Family Sunday at The Mingei International Museum, on Sunday, August 21st! We’ll have earthenware clay to hand-build some fun pieces, similar to our “free play clay” we include in our camps and art enrichment programs, and we’ll also be pouring ceramic molds. Entry to Family Sunday is from Noon-4pm, and is only $5 per family!

Aside from the art projects, entry to Family Sunday also includes museum admission, a fun treasure hunt, and some neat giveaways including a children’s coloring book! P.S. The founder of the Mingei International Museum, Martha Longenecker, is a potter, whom once established a studio in Claremont, California. She developed the ceramics program at San Diego State University, is an author, and has been honored with many awards, including an honorary doctorate. The Chula Vista Nature Center is exhibiting a really neat collection of glass art in their current exhibit, Art Aquatic. The glass art, which was made by local artists, is being displayed in tanks, along with the fish, and other aquatic life. It’s wonderful that the art is set in a family-friendly environment, and in a way that attracts the attention of both children and adults alike.

One display that caught our attention is the Exploding Volcano. We came to find out that this display was made by two boys, age 10! The display has glass that looks like a volcano, with bubbles coming up through the center, and fish the same color as the glass. It’s truly incredible, and amazing that it was made by such young children.

As part of their celebration of Art Aquatic, the Chula Vista Nature Center is having a one day Glass Art Fair, from 10am-4pm, on Saturday, August 20th. The event will include arts & crafts, glass art demonstrations, animal encounters, glass art for sale, plus hot dogs and snow cones included with admission! We have one last week of Ceramics Summer Camp, 2011. Our last week of camp will be through the Mission Valley YMCA, and is for kids age 8-12. Projects include hand-building ceramics from clay, pouring ceramic molds, painting, and more!

San Diego Botanic Garden is holding their annual ‘Garden Expressions’ event from 9am-5pm on August 20th-21st, 2011. This event includes many different types of artists, including potters, sculptors, painters, and so on. Those attending will have the opportunity to co-create a sculpture made of recycled materials. The Oceanside Museum of Art is having a free Family Art Day from 1pm-4pm on Sunday, October 2nd, 2011. The theme for this particular Family Art Day is ‘Create a Character’, and is sponsored by Rady Children’s Hospital. Participants will draw, and use various materials, including paper bags, fabric, and magazines to develop a fun character from their imagination. The Summer Show at the Sawdust Art & Craft Festival is a fun event, in Laguna Beach, that lasts from June 24 – August 28, 2011. The festival is held in a eucalyptus grove, and consists of many different artists, displaying (and making) art of many different mediums.

The setting is very unique, and the best way to describe it is that it is truly majestic. Each artist designs his/her own booth, and some are true art forms of their own. There’s a stream, a neat deck, and a very cool working water wheel. Be sure to bring your camera!

Lots of special events happen throughout the season at the Sawdust, including classes, fun theme days, and more. It’s a fun, family-friendly environment, which normally includes some hands-on art projects for kids. Our kids love coming here!

They offer art for sale, and have great live entertainment included with admission, plus food and beverages for sale onsite. Check the website links below for great images from the festival, plus more information about this fun place to spend a summer day. Keep it crafty!
