Better Value Begins with Change

After scaling down the size (by request of the curator), the Mayor's sign looks huge out of context. "Better Value Begins with Change" is a simple bit of word play meant to allude to the absurdity of a universal value system, a two party electoral system representing 300 million people, and the intrinsic value of a 49 cent - 700 calorie upgrade. Many thanks to Marc Wilson and Art & Advertising Signs in Albuquerque for the vinyl work.

Julian Schnabel - Better Director than Painter

Having finally seen The Diving Bell & the Butterfly, Julian Schnabel's latest film, I was truly impressed. Clearly, his artistic voice is most eloquently translated in a directorial role.

Paralysis, and imprisonment in one's own mind are two of my absolute greatest fears. Eight years ago I suffered a burst fracture of my L1 vertebra, narrowly escaping paralysis in the process.

I am thankful each day that I can go on living, breathing, feeling, touching, loving, and creating with both my mind and body.

The film is beautiful, terrifying, and inspiring - all that one could ask for from an artwork. If you haven't seen it, the eye-closure scene alone is worth the rental fee.

Online Barter Services, and why I am a fan

I just read a blurb in the NY Times about JoeBarter.com which is an online directory of services up for barter.

I LOVE THIS. Barter is the such an old yet currently progressive idea. I barter often with friends and strangers for all sorts of services (cars/dentistry/photography/remodeling/etc/etc).

My 2 favorite things about bartering services:

1. No tax paid (i.e. no death-funding on the exchange)

2. It leaves me feeling both generous and thankful for the exchange in a way that paying for a good/service just doesn't do for me.

So, thanks to all those traders out there. Thanks to Joe Barter, Craigslist, and anyone not afraid to offer up a trade instead of a crisp bill.

fighting the good fight; the uphill battle of an artist emerging

Why is Art so rewarding? Because the evolution of game has made this into an uphill battle. Creation is so effortless and pure. Steep that in the noxious brew of peer competition, the economics of survival, self-doubt, and self-pity, and things get a bit ugly and complicated.

I have a friend who is obsessed with Google surfing his peers and measuring himself against them... It doesn't make his work any better.

Passive Solar Window awnings for my studio

Okay, I finally got these bitching new awnings hung over my studio windows. I designed them using an amazing online tool from Sustainable Design. You can use some basic info to maximize summer shade + winter solar gain. My friend Nolan King help with the engineering and installation. They were built by Studio Sean Pope in Albuquerque.

I can't wait to see how they'll look when they rust.

A good friend of mine just flew into town for the weekend. As I was showing him around my studio, he noted the reoccurrence + theme of airplanes/avionics. Right now I am really interested in paper airplanes, models, and kites. I guess I took my flight paraphernalia for granted thinking the more obvious interest in the room would be my swelling piles of cut up money.

Inflatable Art - The Mayor Rests to Debut At Biennial Southwest, Albuquerque Art Museum

Following the launch of it's new wing, the Albuquerque Art Museum is hosting it's second Biennial Southwest Exhibition. Curated from over 750 artists, the exhibition will feature the work of 65 artists working in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona.

The exhibition was curated by Dr. Stephanie Hanor from MOCA San Diego.

The show runs Sept. 28th - Nov. 30th 2008 with a public reception on Sept. 28, 2008 from 2-4pm.

My inclusion: The Mayor Rest can be seen in greater detail HERE.
