Here is the transcript of a recent interview I did for Issue #12 of One Two One Two Microphone Check. realized that producing creative wasn't nearly as much fun as being
creative. Projects and deadlines are awesome when they relate to my own
work, and not so awesome when I am not personally invested.

What's the greatest difficulty you had to overcome to do what you're doing now?

Hubris, particularly as it relates to production. I
still struggle with it, as I tend to be a
bite-off-more-than-I-should-chew person. That tendency can be hard on
the people around me, particularly when I'm under the gun prepping for a
big show.

What's the greatest difficulty you face on a daily basis to keep on doing what you're doing?

There really never is enough time...

When did you find yourself thinking, "Well, this is it. I'm really doing what I want now"?

Ask me in 2 years. Seriously. I'd love to say I'm
there, but I have never been fully satisfied with "what I'm doing right
now." Maybe I'm restless by nature, or perhaps it's just the nature of
looking forward to the next thing. I love starting new projects and when
they are finished I dive into the next.

How do you imagine the future?

Better, worse, easier and possibly a bit more
challenging. I'd love to realize some larger, monumental scale works
and/or a public art project or two.

What would you consider to be the main quality in order to survive in your field?

Tenacity. It takes a lot of energy to continually
produce things that the markets may or may not want. When you add in the
emotional and creative risks that artists have to take every day, it's
easy to see why so many of us quit making things over time.

And what is the indispensable flaw that someone should have in order to get into your business?

If you are going to pursue the arts, it helps to be a little off.

"The deflating white whale symbolizes a cyclical end to obsession. Much like a beached whale, which dies when it's
non-buoyant mass collapses under its own weight, human obsession
frequently spirals out of control until its bearer can no longer support
its mass. ...it inflates until full and then slowly deflates, collapsing
inward on itself, and without witness, the cycle begins anew."

Similar to its original installation in the desert of Marfa, TX, The
Dying Gaul installed in landlocked Colorado will be left out to dry. The
sculpture will fill the east wing of the Philip J. Steele Gallery along
with photographs of the piece in situ.

Person's work is exhibited courtesy of Mark Moore Gallery, Los Angeles.

cartoon character Underdog titled
"Hero." The goofball "hero who never fails" has resigned to abject
apathy. Strung out on the "super vitamin pills" that
provide his super powers, he sits slumped forward, meditating on his
iPhone.

The work is three parts culture, one
part self portrait. In a political state dominated by an agenda of
distract the public and rob what's left, with two endless wars draining
the last of my great grand-children's hope for prosperity, why be
anything but apathetic to injustice?

Hero is a metaphor for my own
vocational and economic struggle, my country's role on the global stage,
and whatever is left of my American dream. Has the time come for
heroism? Or should we just give up, sit back, and have a good laugh?

The opening reception will be held Thursday, August 4 · 6:00pm - 8:00pm.
A Hero Never Fails is on view through September 10th, 2011.

Freight + Volume
530 W. 24th St.
New York, NY

Today, officers from the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives in Los Angeles walked into Mark Moore Gallery and confiscated one of my recent pieces; "Improvised Shotgun: White."

The officers also requested the current location and bills of lading of recently shipped work of a similar nature. I assume they plan to seize these works as well. The receipt for the initial seizure is shown below.

As of this posting, I have not received any official complaint, cease & desist, nor notice of any kind from the BATFE. Likewise, they've made no requests pending on other pieces in my growing body of RECESS work.

I assume that the actions of the BATFE are a misguided attempt to develop evidence against me for alleged crimes they believe I have committed.

As I have made clear on this blog, other internet sites, and through my demonstrated exhibition record and career - I am an conceptual artist. My highly public and often controversial works have at time created both challenging and meaningful public discourse. This is the nature of my purpose.

The seizure of my works is a seizure of my voice, and a terrible injustice. I believe the actions of the BATFE today are a violation of my first amendment rights, and an act of overt theft. I am saddened and deeply disgusted that in the midst of this terrible recession, Federal tax dollars are being spent to stifle my rights, seize my work, and question my patriotism.

Everything you can learn about me is here. It is in the combined effort of my labor and the illustration of my ideas. My works are my words, my passions, and my livelihood. Draw your own conclusions and pass this along if you refuse to believe in an America where questioning culture is a crime.
