How to Boost Your Credit Score at Every Age

Your age often influences how you balance your budget, save for retirement and evaluate your investments. But it should also be a factor in managing your credit score.

The duration of your credit history heavily affects your FICO score, which lenders use to gauge a borrower’s ability to repay a loan. While it’s important to pay your bills on time and keep your balances low at every age, there’s more that most consumers can do to boost their scores so they can get the best loan terms.

Here are nine steps that will help you build excellent credit over your lifetime.

Your 20s

1. Apply for a credit card

John Ulzheimer, president of consumer education for SmartCredit.com, says consumers typically enter the credit game between the ages of 18 and 22, though the CARD Act’s restrictions are making increasingly difficult for people under 21 to get their first credit cards. Regulations aside, it’s better to get a credit card sooner rather than later because debit cards won’t boost your credit score.

Most credit newbies get their first credit card by getting a parent or guardian to co-sign their application or by applying for a secured card, which requires customers to put down money upfront that will match their line of credit and minimize default risks. Either strategy can be effective as long as you understand that the real trick is using these cards responsibly.

2. Don’t apply for every credit card

“Building credit isn’t the same as building a large balance,” Ken Lin, CEO of Credit Karma.com, says. Don’t make the mistake many credit beginners make by opening a store credit card at every retailer visited during Christmastime, for example.

Tom Quinn, consumer credit expert for Credit.com, says consumers should only apply for credit when they need it. A large number of credit inquiries over a very short period of time can cause your score to go down, he says. It also can make it a whole lot easier to run a bunch of bills you can’t possibly pay.

In lieu of a wallet full of credit cards, Lin suggests adding a new credit card once a year to your arsenal until you’ve amassed three or four cards that you can consistently pay off on time.

He also suggests finding cards that don’t charge annual fees because any card you open at this stage should stay open for at least five years. These cards determine the duration of your credit history, which accounts for 15% of your total credit score, so choosing a card with a little-to-no annual fees makes it easy for beginners to keep fledging accounts open for the long haul.

3. Start watching your credit score

Credit beginners must be extremely diligent during these formative years. The FICO score attempts to predict whether you’ll pay a loan back on time and early indications that you won’t can be particularly damaging.

“Consumers in their 20s should be aware that their credit scores are more volatile and will react differently to late payments and excessive credit card debt than consumers with larger and older credit files,” Ulzheimer says.

Your 30s & 40s

1. Maintain a variety of accounts

If your 20s were all about building credit, then your 30s and 40s will be all about leveraging it.

“Now is the time to diversify accounts,” Lin says, suggesting that those who managed to build a decent credit score in their 20s should consider adding revolving credits lines, like a mortgage or auto loan.

Credit lines fall into two major categories. Installment accounts require consumers to pay a fixed amount each month until the entire balance has been depleted, while revolving accounts can be reused as long as minimum payments are made and the limit isn’t reached. Having both on the books nets more points with FICO than having only one kind.

2. Take advantage of low rates

If you’ve achieved a strong score, you will probably qualify for the lowest interest rates on large loans. Consider whether it’s time to buy property, cars or upgrades for your home.

“People don’t realize the value of a good score,” Lin says, pointing out that once you’re in the 750 range, there’s no need to shoot much higher. “It’s meant to be spent.”

3. Don’t sweat short-term score swings

Quinn says it’s alright if your score dips into the lower 700s after you purchase a home, take out an auto loan or incur debts that are typical among those starting families. As long as you’re responsible with paying back debt, your score will likely rebound from the hit you take from credit inquiries.

“Credit reports belonging to people in their 30s and 40s are well-aged and generally large enough that taking on new debts and making small payment mistakes from time to time don’t spell credit score disaster,” Ulzheimer says.

Your 50s & Beyond

1. Curb your credit use

Once you’ve reached 50, it’s time to start weaning yourself off credit cards.

“If you’re 50 or 60 years old and you’re still paying down debts, you probably don’t have a lot of savings stored away for retirement,” Lin says.

To make sure that you’re not stuck in debt during your golden years, focus on paying off existing loans and avoid taking out large loans, such as a mortgages.

“At this point in your life if you’re not at or above FICO 780 then you’ve done or are doing something wrong,” Ulzheimer says. “Consumers with decades of credit experience not only have well-aged credit reports, a basis for excellent FICO scores, but should also be responsible enough to know how to manage all types of credit obligations.”

2. Use credit cards strategically

Credit maintenance is not the same as credit abstinence. You should keep using your credit cards on small purchases because activity is a factor in setting your FICO score.

“Pay the check at a restaurant using your credit card, then pay the balance off in full,” Quinn suggests. “That way, if you do need to apply for credit in the future, your account looks active.”

Be careful when you close accounts. You don’t want to shorten your credit history and hurt your score by closing your oldest account.

3. Keep tabs on your credit score, even if you’re not applying for new accounts

Ulzheimer says people over 50 are more vulnerable to fraud because they often stop paying attention to their credit reports. That’s why people over 50 should check their scores, even if they’re not applying for new loans or incurring debt.

I have spent hours pouring through travel reviews and I have found that most so called bad reviews are from people that are either just plain old negative ungrateful people and/or people that had such high expectations about their trip that any small glitch sent them spiraling into negative review rage.

I caution and challenge each of you to remember that vacation is a time to relax, enjoy time with family and the chance to zone out and spend sometime with your thoughts. While things can go wrong, remember that;

1.) You are blessed to be able to take a vacation.

2.) Allowing a unfortunate incident to consume you will only ruin this time that you have taken to relax and decompress from everyday life. Thus, defeating the purpose of even going on vacation.

3.) Don’t sweat the small stuff. Remember that these unfortunate issues will be things you laugh about years from now!

One of the best ways to save big money when vacationing is to rent a condo. My wife and I went to the Cayman Islands and stayed in a newly remodeled 2 bedroom condo, on the beach, for 7 days and paid 40% less than a hotel would have charged. When you factor in the ability to have a full kitchen for preparing breakfast and lunch, you make that number jump exponentially.

I have used both of these sites to rent condos and have always had great experiences. I like renting directly from the owners. Take your time and don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you are going to spend your hard earned money, make sure you are 100% comfortable with the person you are renting from and the accommodations they are providing. Make sure you ask for the most up to date photos. You want to see what it looks like today, not what it looked like 4 years ago. A lot can change and deteriorate in that time.

If you are someone that finds it hard to save money, one of his approaches is to spend the next 6 months saving 1 penny from every dollar you make. After 6 months, make it 2 pennies for every dollar and then add 1 additional penny every 6 months. You will see a snowball effect and the easing into saving will make it easier to save and will see your savings grow painlessly.

Here is a good article I found about your Credit Report and how to fix errors. Errors can cause a lower credit score which can cost you more in auto insurance premiums, disqualify you for a loan or make your interests rates on a credit card or loan be at a higher rate.

Fixing Credit Report Errors

The majority of credit reports contain at least one error, most of which are in the form of incorrect or missing account information. Even if these errors aren’t your fault, they can come back to bite you. One possible impact can be a lower credit score.

But you won’t know if your credit report contains errors until you look at it. The first step in finding out is to get a copy of your credit report from the three credit bureaus; Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.

Here’s where you can get a free copy of your credit report.

https://www.annualcreditreport.com, this is the US Government backed site. I recommend you only use this one b/c a lot of the others end up charging you monthly fees, if you do not cancel the enrollment.

If you find an error on your credit report, you can file a credit report dispute online. That wouldn’t be my first choice. I recommend sending a letter notifying the credit bureaus of the error and requesting a correction using old fashioned mail. It may take longer but you’ll have what you need to assert your rights under the laws pertaining to information on your credit reports.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, here are the steps to take to correct mistakes on your credit report:

• Write a letter that details the information you think is incorrect, identify each item, explain why you think it is incorrect, and request the error be removed. You can use their sample letter as a guide for writing your own.
• Include copies of documents to back up your claims.
• Also send a copy of your credit report itself, with each error itself circled and numbered.
• Send your letter and copies of documents certified mail, “return receipt requested” so you will have proof of delivery and receipt.
• To take advantage of the full protection under the law, you should send your requests to both the credit bureaus and the source of the incorrect information (such as the credit card company, cell phone provider, etc.)
• Then you wait. The credit reporting companies are required to conduct an investigation of the issues you raised in your letter, which could take about 30 days. They must give you a written summary of the results of their investigation and actions they will take. If as a result of their investigation changes are made to your credit report, they must send an updated copy free of charge. This copy does not count towards the annual limit of one free report from each bureau per year.

If the credit bureau investigation does not resolve your dispute, you can request that a statement
explaining your position in respect to the disputed information be included in your credit report files.

My advice to folks: get a copy of your credit report and review it NOW. If you notice an error when you are applying for a loan or a job, then it is too late. You won’t get the error fixed before they see your report and that error could end up costing you big time.

As I sat on hold with SiriusXm Radio last night, I thought I would drop some knowledge on how to get the absolute BEST deals on satellite radio. I renewed my 2 satellite radios and this is how I get my service for more than half off the normal monthly rate. Follow these steps and I can almost guarantee you that you will save money and/or get them to throw in some freebies to keep you happy.

• If you are a current customer, ask to speak to the Cancellation Department. BE NICE about it, but tell them you only want to speak with the Cancellation Department.

• If not a current customer, use the tactics below for getting a new account also. Just do this with regular Customer Service person.

• Once you get to these people, rule number 1 is to be NICE. Remember they are people too so treat them with kindness and keep it lighthearted. I am sure 90% of the people they talk to are angry, frustrated or just plain a-holes. Don’t be a 90 percenter.
• Don’t forget to smile while you are talking, this is a tried and true method that makes your tone over the phone much more upbeat and friendly.
• Use their first name when talking to them. This is Sales 101. We all like to hear our names and I bet over 90% of the people never take the time to use the Reps. name.
• I usually start off by saying, “Ok, Rep.’s name, are you ready to play, Let’s make a deal, tonight?” This almost always gets a laugh and starts off the conversation on a friendly tone. If they don’t laugh, oh well, they must be lame.
• Explain to them that you really want to keep the service but you need a super good deal to make it happen. Remind them how long you have been a customer and if you can afford it, tell them that if you make a deal, you can pay for the full year while on the phone.
• Don’t get frustrated and start threatening. Kill them with kindness if you want to end the call with a few extra bucks in your pocket. Take your time and remember, he who speaks first, loses. By that I mean ask for something then shut up, do not say anything and even though it is awkward silence, they will eventually start talking to break the silence. This also works if they offer you a deal that you feel is not any good.

Not only does this work for radio providers, it also works well for Cell Phone providers. I have Sprint and I have received countless credits on my account, free smartphones, free extra line added to my account with a free Blackberry thrown in to use on it and free monthly bonus minutes and texts added to my monthly plan.

If you are not familiar with Coupons.com then it is time you get acquainted. This is a must use site because it offers 2 of my favorite things, discounts and the ability to get them for FREE. It doesn’t get much better than that. I used to be quite hesitant to use the coupon sites because it seemed like they would spam me to death, once I signed up. If you don’t want them to hit your inbox with emails, make sure you uncheck the 2 boxes on the sign up page that ask if you want updates, promos, etc. Coupons.com also doesn’t have any adware or spyware so you can feel safe using this site.

If you follow these steps, I can guarantee that you will not only save time but also get a great deal that saves you the most important thing, Money!! I have used this tactic when purchasing my vehicles as well as others.

The power of the internet is not just for shopping or Facebook and Twitter, it is also a great asset when buying a new car.

A great place to research vehicles and also find out current manufacturers incentives, leases, promotions, etc. is Edmunds.com

Step 1: Set up a new Gmail or Yahoo email account. Trust me, the car dealers will hit your email a ton of times and having an email that you use just for this task, will save you time deleting their emails.

If you have a smart phone, it is also helpful to be able to retrieve all these emails and have the information when at a dealership. I used this tactic to show the Honda dealership near my house a lower price offered by another Honda dealership in the Columbus area. Since I had the email for them to see, they beat it by another $300.00.

Step 2: Go to the car manufacturer’s website and use their internet quote system.

Step 3: Pick your car and all options, color, etc. – Then click send.

Step 4: Wait for the great low prices to arrive in your email box.

Step 5: Head out to the dealership or call the Internet Sales Person to schedule a time to go see them and make sure that the car you want is available on their lot.

Step 6: Head to the dealership and buy your new car.

Over the last couple year’s, I have saved well over $10,000.00 when purchasing items. Since researching items to find deals has become a fun hobby for me, I decided to share my knowledge with everyone.

I have purchased everything from carpet to furniture, lighting, electronics and many other items while saving big money. I like to purchase quality products, but I always find a way to pay bargain basement prices for them. For me, brick and mortar stores are a way to see and touch the product first hand. Once I know I want the item, I jump on the internet and find it a lot cheaper, tax free (on most things) with free to super cheap shipping. Not only do I like to buy things on the internet, I sell many things too. I like to use Craigslist to sell and buy things. I have been able to get top money out of my items and sell them within the first 24 to 48 hours. With Craigslist, it is all about simply knowing when to post your item.
