This isn't as dramatic as a colored kitchen sink, but a fun way to add color to your kitchen is to paint the inside of your glass front cabinets.

For a fun twist paint your walls a great neutral and your window frames a bright vibrant color!

New ceiling treatment, black trim to update the existing window treatments and newly upholstered dining room chairs give this room a whole new look.  For this room, there was no need to start over, just fresh up.

Sometimes my clients have really great stuff, it just takes a designer with an outside perspective to be able to rearrange their things to create the most impact.

Other times it is using ordinary times in unique ways!

Spring 2013 Houston Design Resource magazine describes one of my newest design projects as, "Dramatic Details, Beautiful Results!"

Gracefully aligned with its golf course views and located in northwest Houston, this grand home is owned by an empty nest couple. Over the years, they had collected many unique treasures and antiques that had taken over the home. At our first meeting, I could see that they both had a fun, vibrant personality that wasn't being showcased well in their home. The key to this design was pairing down my clients' great collections and the addition of pattern and color to bring out their character.

When we started the kitchen design, I knew that we needed to better connect the kitchen and breakfast room spaces, as they were being separated by a full length television unit and storage cabinet. By removing these items I was able to give them a custom built in breakfast table and still leave enough room for comfortable lounge seating with their morning coffee. As for the television, I designed a custom built in entertainment center to hold the television and some of their unique treasures.

I was happy to hear my client say, “We now sit in our redesigned rooms and never fail to state how awesome the room is, as do our family and friends.” Without a complete kitchen redo (paint, space planning, new furniture and window treatments) I was able to give new life to this room and increase the functionality and flow throughout the home.

Designing a home is challenging enough. There are millions of decisions and minute details that go into the building process, but designing and building a home from across an ocean offers additional challenges beyond differing time zones...

Copper appliances...wow I kind of like it!  

This tip seems simple, but make sure you house and yard are clean.  Power washing your home as well as mow the grass and sweeping the side walk/porch to make an impact.  

Brighten up your front facade by painting your front door a bold new color.

Add even more life to your house with a "container garden".

A nice seating area on your porch will add curb appeal and another room to your house.  Enjoy a cup of morning coffee or entertain friends and family here.

Add Architectural Accents!!!  This is a big one!  Trying adding trim around the windows, a new mailbox or address numbers, new light fixture or even a new garage door if the budget allows.

Before buying artwork, decide what kind of artwork "speaks to you".

Original artwork, which may be a fabulous one-of-a-kind piece costs more because the artist only sells one of them.  It is not being mass produced.

If your after unique artwork without the large price tag, you may want to look a prints.  This is where the artist has created a piece of art then creates a print on paper.  Other kinds of artwork to consider at reproductions, and photography.

I always like to support locally if possible, so when buying artwork try art shows, auctions, antique fairs, local galleries, or internet sites like Etsy or Houzz.

1. You've heard me say this more than once, but painting or replacing your front door can make a huge difference.

2. Containers are a great way to grow plants.  Cluster a few colorful potted containers on your porch to brighten it up!

3. Create you own little get away on your porch...some comfortable, stylish seating, pillows, rug, etc.  It will be a great place to sit and enjoy the sunset, read a book, or even to entertain family and friends.

4. Sometimes it is the little things that make a difference so power wash you house, clean the windows, and add special accents like a new mailbox (if yours is rusted and bent), new lighting or house numbers.

5. Garage doors may be a bit expensive but they really set the tone for the rest of the house.

6. Good landscaping is worth the investment.  If the idea is overwhelming to you than consult a professional.

Before starting to stage a house, I like to start by collecting all of the accessories and artwork to see what I have to work with.

An odd number is pleasing to the eye: lamp, art and floral/books 

Group items of varying shapes, sizes and heights

Florals, lighting, metallic and glass look nice mixed in with your accessories and books

This same idea goes beyond end tables, use it to stage your dresser, 

Fresh clean sheets

The first cup if coffee

When I found this wording in Good Housekeeping, I loved it right away.

It's more about how you feel in the space.  Good design helps you to feel good.

Design is about what your like, not what is hot this year!  Trends come and go.  In the end if you like your house that is all that matters.

Your front door can make a dramatic impact on your house so update your door a bit!

Shop around...try flea markets, antique shops and also watch for special sales!

Every house needs that unique touch...so do something personal to your house.  It could be as expensive as getting a custom headboard made or as little as painting your monogram on your wall.

Step 6: Fixture and finish specification
Now it's time to firm up your decisions and make your final selection...cabinetry, tile, flooring, counter top, appliances, and paint.

Step 7: Final drawings
You have everything picked out, now it's time to get it on paper...floor plans, elevations, details, lighting plan etc.  This is also where you get your permits and order your material.  When I'm doing a job typically most of the drawings were already done prior to this step, as I do them while I'm designing.  For me this is where I do my final changes.

Step 8:  Contractor estimates

Depending on the job this may have already happened.  Typically, during or after schematics is when you can start calling contractors to give them a heads up.  You may even want their input or knowledge during that phase. For sure, if it hasn't happened yet, call contractors and get estimates on the job.  It's a good idea if you don't have a contract that you know and trust to get 3 different estimates.

Step 9: Demo!

This is where things can get messy.  If your living in the house during the remodel set up a temporary kitchen and prepare your self for the mess to come.  It's a good idea to talk with your contractor about the construction process...length of time, allergy issues, hours, debris, etc.   

Step 10: Odds and Ends

Construction is done and there are only little things that needs done to finalize the project.  A punch list lists the things that needs to be done, the party writing it and the date of completion,  Sometimes it is the client that writes this, sometimes its the contractor or a combination of the 2.

Step 1: Inspiration
Look through magazines, friends houses, the internet...and find what really speaks to you.  Houzz is a great resource for ideas and information.  It is actually where I found the design process broken down.  This information is curtsy of Rebekah Zaveloff from Houzz.

Step 2: Style
Are you modern, country, traditional, minimalist...find out what your style is.  Even if its a mixture of a few.  I really think steps 1 and 2 happen simultaneously most of the time. 

Step 3: Budget
Before the actually planning can begin you after to come up with a budget and a "scope of work" or figure out what you want to accomplish.

Step 4: Hire a professional
Hire a professional does cost money, but with their experience and knowledge you will come out with a better product in the end.  They may even be able to save you money on costly mistakes.  Even if you want to do it DIY somewhere along the lines you will have to hire a designer, contractor, plumber, electrician, supplier, etc.  So ask around, get references and figure out who you want to work with.

There is a lot that goes into remodeling so take it one step at a time!

Love when storage can be hidden inside cabinets to leave a clean, clear counter!

This is a great thing to put inside a medicine cabinet, vanity, or closet.
