Always inspired by everyday gestures, Philippe Starck’s sensibility for local traditions and typical craftsmanship is evident in Hotte. The tall, handwoven fruit-picking basket worn on the back of farm workers, with its sturdy round base, wide opening and lightweight aspect, was the starting point for this welcoming armchair.

Its name, After, reflects a thoughtful continuation of design legacies—honouring how each generation revisits what came before while shaping what comes next.
The After chair balances sculptural presence with tactile comfort. Evolving traditional Danish and historical chair archetypes, its broad, inviting seat and distinctive backrest – crafted from layered solid ash – offer a refined take on familiar forms. Available in clear lacquered ash or a burgundy, it can be paired with an optional seat cushion in canvas, natural leather or burgundy leather. Whether placed alone or in multiples, the chair quietly anchors a space without overpowering it.

About Michael Anastassiades

With a career spanning more than 20 years, Michael Anastassiades has conceived lights, furniture and objects characterised by a poetic yet rigorous interpretation of technology, materials and functions.

The Cyprus born and London-based designer trained as a civil engineer at London’s Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine before taking a master’s degree in industrial design at the Royal College of Art. His practice encompasses both industrial production and artisan techniques, drawing inspiration from many sources which he distils into pure, simple forms that balance improvisation and structure, control and intuition.

Since setting up his studio in 1994 he has collaborated with leading manufacturers including Flos, B&B Italia, Herman Miller, Mutina and Bang & Olufsen. His work is featured in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Chair 1179 by Josef Frank for Svenskt Tenn

Josef Frank grew up in Austria and studied architecture at the Vienna University of Technology. During the 1920s he was one of the pioneers of the modernist movement, something that would change as he grew more critical of modern architecture and considered it to be austere and creatively limiting. Modernism emphasised the material, rather than the spiritual, something that Josef Frank was strongly opposed to. Instead, he was inspired by freer, more artistic ideals and developed his own type of modernism where the person, comfort, homeliness, and a vivid use of colours were central.

In 1925, Josef Frank founded the interior design firm Haus & Garten, reaching both creative and commercial success. Through Haus & Garten, his expressive designs would soon catch the attention of Estrid Ericson and in 1932, they initiated the creative collaboration that would last for over three decades.

Josef Frank was Jewish, and left Austria with his wife in 1934 due to the growing antisemitism in the country. He emigrated to Sweden and was appointed an artistic role at Svenskt Tenn. Just a few years later, Josef Frank and Estrid Ericson got their first international break. Exhibiting at the world fairs in Paris in 1937, San Francisco, and New York in 1939, their designs stood out, going starkly against the ideals of the time. Characterised by bold contrasting materials, colours, and prints, the designs by Josef Frank and Estrid Ericson quickly gained international acclaim and recognition. Soon the pair – perhaps paradoxically, would embody the term Swedish Modern.

Throughout the coming years, Josef Frank continued to design interiors, furniture, and prints, while Estrid Ericson curated the settings that brought them to life. They jointly also created interiors for a large number of private homes and public spaces. Through their creative partnership, which lasted until Josef Frank’s passing in 1967, the duo created the unique, colourful, boldly patterned, and personal aesthetic that remains fundamental to Svenskt Tenn today.
