Volunteer in Topeka

Volunteering your time and giving back is a great way to show that you support and care for your community. If you have any interest in volunteering, we recommend you visit the United Way of Greater Topeka and see where your time and effort is needed.

Give back to the community and volunteer.

One of the biggest volunteer opportunities going on near Topeka right now is to help the small town of Harveyville. They were hit by a devastating tornado on February 28th that took out more than 40 percent of the community. Volunteers are needed more than ever to help them deal with the aftermath of recovering and rebuilding.

The United Way of Greater Topeka has been helping others and changing lives for over 80 years. It was started back during the Great Depression and is now involved in over 80 programs and they coordinate advocacy on local, state and national levels.

This volunteer center is located on Southwest Arrowhead Road, just 7 minutes away from Chalet when you take Southwest 6th Avenue and Southwest Wanamaker Road.

Visit the Combat Air Museum in Topeka

Do you enjoy learning about historical events or have an interest in aviation? A great way to further your education about these topics is to visit the Combat Air Museum in Topeka. At this museum, you will find exhibits and other features that will grab your interest.

Check out all the aircrafts and more at this museum.

The Combat Air Museum has been as institution for education and a tourism destination for over 30 years. It is located on an active air field and is home to the second largest runway in the state of Kansas.

This museum is full of rich history that will amaze you. Exhibits include over 37 WWI and present day aircrafts, displays of aircraft engines and numerous displays of artifacts and military aviation art.

What do you think of when you hear the phrase, “going green?” For most people, they think about the environment. A great way that you can start your green journey is through conserving energy. Not only will you be helping the environment, but you can also save some money. Check out these easy ways you can conserve energy at Chalet:

Make a habit of turning off the lights when you leave a room.

Flip the switch- So many people are in the habit of leaving lights on when they leave a room. You can save money and energy just by remembering to flip the lights off when they aren’t in use.

Unplug your appliances and devices- Did you know that your appliances and devices use energy even when they are turned off? Whenever these items are not in use, remember to unplug them so you can avoid costly bills due to phantom energy.

Replace your light bulbs- The next time your bulbs go out, replace them with compact fluorescent bulbs. They use 75% less energy and lasts up to ten times longer than regular bulbs.

Emergency Supplies You Should Keep in Your Apartment

Unfortunately, no one can know for sure when an emergency may occur. However, being prepared and knowing how to handle the situation will be critical in case anything should happen like a natural disaster or an injury. Check out these emergency supplies you should keep in your apartment for your safety.

Make a list and go get all the emergencies supplies you will need.

First-aid kit- First aid kits are extremely important to have around. Make sure to include items such as bandages, antibiotic ointment, gauze, tweezers and scissors. Keep this kit in a safe place where you can have easy access to it.
Water- Store water in your apartment in case your power and utilities cut off. Ideally, you would want enough water to last everyone for about 7 days or more.
Flashlights- Flashlights are important in case a storm hits and the power goes out. Also, be sure to have plenty of extra batteries to keep your flashlight working. A good rule of thumb is to have at least one flashlight per person.

And that’s a mistake, because Mew is a wonderful, healthy girl who just tends to be a bit on the shy side…we just call it well-mannered. But she’s not anti-social: she loves attention, almost as much as she loves to watch birds, squirrels, and life in general from comfortable perches. This little lady will make a perfect soulmate for the person caring enough to give her a chance.

What’s New at the Topeka Zoo

Are you looking for something fun to do that your entire family can enjoy? If you’re looking for excitement and a unique experience, then check out what’s new at the Topeka Zoo! You’ll find all kinds of great wildlife at their interactive and educational exhibits. This is one adventure that you do not want to pass up.

Come see the penguins at the new exhibit!

May 10^th will be an exciting day for the zoo as they welcome the Penguin Plunge exhibit. This wonderful, new exhibit will feature African Penguins in a replica of their South African beach habitat.

Visitors will be able to watch the birds feed and swim in their natural surroundings. There will also be educational stations where you can learn more about the biology, culture and conservation issues facing these great creatures.

Be sure to check out the other great exhibits at this zoo such as Jungle Cats, Discovering Apes, and Black Bear Woods.

The Topeka Zoo is located on Southwest Gage Boulevard, about a minute away from Chalet.
