This year on July 23rd, Morzine played host to the second to final stage of the 2016 Tour de France. This epic event consists of a 21 day-long stages over a 23-day period and covers around 3,500 kilometers. The race alternates between clockwise and counterclockwise circuits of France. The number of teams usually varies between 20 and 22, with nine riders each.

This stage began in Megeve and entered Morzine via the Col du Joux-Plane and ended in the main square opposite the Tourist Office. Ion Izagirre claimed his first Tour de France stage as he arrived solo in Morzine. Despite the driving rain the crowds were out in full force to cheer on the riders. Chris Froome is poised to win his third Tour de France title and it is almost a done deal that he will ride down the Champs-Elysees and cross the finish line as the overall winner. Conditions on the final Alpine stage were tricky, but despite the potential for chaos on the descent, all the major players stayed upright. The event was a huge success and drew many visitors to both Morzine and Les Gets.

Lac Montriond is the perfect spot for some summer fun in the sun. There are a variety of water sports on offer, 3 fabulous restaurants and plenty to do for both young and old. 

The kids love the pony rides around the lake and if you buy a fishing licence you can join the local anglers and try your hand at catching the local perche. Canoes, stand up paddle boards and kayaks can be rented by the hour.

Most of the locals head to this popular lake armed with picnic blankets and a packed lunch and spend the day relaxing after a hard week of work.

Every year the Sparten Beast does not fail to challenge even the toughest competitor. This year the Beast starts at 9am and ends up at the finish line in the main square next to the tourist office around 11am.
Conditions today will be challenging to say the least after a heavy downfall of rain and very muddy and slippery conditions.
The final course remains a secret until the race in order to challenge the competitors to the limit. There is no possibility to scope out the course beforehand in order to gain an advantage.
Sunday sees the Sparten Super take place from 9am till 10am.
This event is a firm favourite with both locals and competitors from further afield.
Luckily the weather forecast is better for the race tomorrow – best of luck to all the ‘Sparten’s’.

Although the winter season is coming to a close here in Les Gets, the resort stays alive during the summer months with an influx of visitors for the alternative sports that become available. One of the key attractions to the area during the summer is the popular mountain biking terrain, as the resort offers 95 kilometres of biking trails. 

With this in mind, Les Gets has been chosen as the European leg of the Crankworx world tour for the next 3 years. 

Crankworx is a freeride mountain bike competition and festival that began in Whistler in 2004, and with every year has increased in size and popularity. This is the fifth year the French alps have hosted the event and it is set to bring vast numbers of people to Les Gets this Summer. The festival will take place from 15th - 19th June and  will attract the world’s most elite mountain bikers to compete. 

With the Pass'portes du Soleil MTB event also taking place at in June, the Tour de France and Etape du Tour coming to Morzine, it's going to be quite a summer for mountain biking in the Portes du Soleil. 

Crankworx will also provide a host of other entertainment, so whether you are a mountain biking enthusiast or not this unique event is not to be missed!

The annual Rock the Pistes Festival has finally arrived in the Portes du Soleil, having started on the 13th March and running until the 19th March. 

The festival which is now in its sixth year, is essentially seasonnaire heaven, music and the stunning backdrop of the mountains. It’s only on for a week so if you want to make the most of it then you’ll need to get your act together in the next few days, especially as it looks like it will provide us with some of the best apres of the season. 

The stage is set up in a different location each day, and on 17th March Izia will be performing between Morzine and Les Gets at the top of the Folliets chairlift - which is pretty great for us since it’s only 5 minutes away. Izia is a French rock singer who opened for Iggy and the Stooges in 2006, and released her own album in 2009 which performed well in the French charts. 

With the venues only accessible by skis, this is an exclusive and unique event, which is free to whoever can get there. So make sure you enjoy the final weeks of the winter season by going to one of these concerts, which will provide a once in a life time festival experience.
