Topic: The Wise Man and the Foolish Man

On Sunday, March 1st, Evangelist Mark Kittrell preached a powerful message on “The Wise Man and the Foolish Man.” Matthew 7:24-27 describes two men, a wise man and a foolish man. These men represent two types of people in life. As in Matthew 7, these types of people make two different choices which result in two different outcomes. Interestingly, there is only one fundamental difference between these two types of people. The difference is that the wise man chooses to act when he hears God’s truth, and the foolish man chooses to ignore God’s truth. Which type of person are you?

In this first message, he preached from Hosea 6:1-3 and explained how we know we need a time of refreshing from the Lord when we start becoming comfortable in the world. We know we need a time of refreshing when sin finds its way into our life, and we refuse to deal with it. We know we need a time of refreshing when we become complacent toward spiritual things. The encouragement from Hosea is to return to the Lord.

<itunes:summary>This year, as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, may we consider the wonderful announcement from God – the birth of the KING of KINGS! Many times, our Christmas and Holiday celebrations detract our attention from this great announcement… for it was the birth of the King, sent to die, that wrought our freedom from sin and made THE way for hope in eternal life with God! This sermon preached by Pastor Gary Yoder focuses on that special announcement, to the Shepherds of Bethlehem in Luke 2, and to the wise men of the East from Matthew 2. Considering the miraculous events in both of these announcements should draw our hearts to the Almighty God as we celebrate the birth of the very God-Man, our Savior.

The Birth announcement to the shepherds

He shall be the source of good news of great joy
He shall be a Savior sent from God
He shall be the source of peace

Luke describes the first announcement in chapter 2, verses 8-14: “And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

The Birth announcement to the Magi

He shall be served because He is a King
He shall be worshipped because He is God

Matthew describes the second announcement through a supernatural star in chapter 2, verses 1-11 : “Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him… When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.”
Consider the challenge from the Word of God regarding the announcement of the King’s Birth!

Have you come to see that Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of Lords?
Are you worshipping Him and serving Him? He deserves all the praise and honor that we can give because of who He is!
Have you experienced the peace that comes through faith? Are you at peace with God today?

	<itunes:summary>Text: Luke 18:9-14
Topic: Understanding how man can have a right relationship with a Holy God
Jesus often used parables to teach spiritual truths in physical illustrations. His teachings were difficult concepts to some of the Jewish people, and his use of parables assisted in his ministry. Jesus often used very common things in his parables, such as soil, wind, and sheep to illustrate things such as “what God is like” and “what the Kingdom is like.”

One such parable can be found in Luke 18:9-14. This parable illustrates how a man can enter into a right relationship with the Holy God. The parable contrasts two men participating in a common activity in the temple: praying. One man was a Pharisee; the other was a tax collector. Both were speaking to God, but they were communicating very different things.

Those who trust themselves

An Inflated view of oneself

Verse 9 indicates that Jesus told this parable to those who were trusting in their own righteousness and ability
They were convinced and confident that God would accept them because of who they were and what they did (Verse 10-12)
The Pharisee speaks of himself and his religion and thanks HIMSELF not God

An inferior view of others

“I’m not as sinful as other people”
Guilty of lateral comparison of righteousness – between men
Displayed his arrogance and haughty spirit

Those who understand themselves

Separated from God

Illustrated in verse 13 by the tax collector
He knew he was a great sinner, a traitor, despised by men
He did not consider himself worthy of entering God’s presence
He was aware of his relational distance from God

Broken before God

Unwilling to lift his eyes towards the Holy God
Feelings of guilt and remorse
Hopelessness and contrition for sin

Those who are right before God

Understanding the nature of God

Verse 14 indicates that this parable is also about the nature of God
God is HOLY and JUST

Understanding the nature of Man

Man is a sinner
Man is dead to righteousness and must pay the penalty for sin

Understanding the nature of mercy

We need forgiveness, although we don’t deserve it
God is merciful to those who come to him in God’s Way
God is gracious and offers righteousness and a relationship
God will save!

Are you right with God?
Are you right with God because of who you are and what you do? Or are you right with God because you understand the holiness of God and the depravity of self and have called upon God for mercy and grace through repentance and faith in the sacrificial Lamb of God?

Topic: Understanding the local church’s responsibility to deal with sin within the church

Consider some of the most deadliest diseases in history…

Smallpox – During its deadliest years, this highly contagious disease killed as many as 30% of people who contracted it, and most survivors were left with lasting impacts
Spanish Flu – In 1918, the Spanish flu struck quickly, leaving a death toll at estimates around 50 million
Bubonic Plague / Black Death – A plague of recurrence, killing a possible 25 million in Europe in the mid 1300s
Tuberculosis – Ranked as the 8th leading cause of death worldwide by the WHO
Malaria – Caused by a parasite, often transmitted by infected mosquitoes, leading to an estimated 1 million deaths annually

1 Corinthians 5 mentions a disease in the Church of God which is every bit as deadly… Immorality was being tolerated in the church at Corinth (verse 1), and this sin affected the entire body of Christ, like leaven affects a lump of dough. Sin affects others, and when left alone, defiles the entire body.

Sin in the Church of God is Scandalous

It is impossible to conceal sin in the church

Consider the universal spread of ‘such news’
Sin in the church becomes the ‘talk of the town’
Draws out accusations of hypocrisy and degrades the name of Christ

How the church deals with sin is important

Corinth was very slow to deal with this sin
Verses 1-4 indicate an arrogant spirit of tolerance in the body
Believers are not perfect, but tolerating sin is not pleasing to our Holy God

Sin in the Church of God is Serious

It is to be mourned by God’s people

Verse 2 indicates the seriousness of our response towards sin – mourning
When our brother or sister in Christ is living in sin, it should grieve us as if someone has died
We ought to be moved with emotion

It is to be judged by God’s people

The word ‘judged’ in verse 3 means to ‘pass judgment’ or ‘reach a decision’
Judgment should not be based upon personal feelings or an arbitrary standard
Judgment should be of the Word of God, publically (verse 4)
Public sin should be dealt with publically

It is to be removed from God’s people

Verses 6-13 instruct the church concerning their actions when an offender of God’s law is unwilling to repent
Drastic measures are to be employed by God’s people

Verse 2 – ‘taken away from you’
Verse 5 – ‘deliver one to Satan’ (not an issue of salvation, but removing from the hand of God’s protection)
Verse 13 – ‘to put away’

The relationship has been damaged – sin changes everything

Sin in the Church of God Demands Separation

The sinful believer must be removed from the assembly

Why? Because tolerated, unrepented sin damages the body
Church discipline is difficult, but commanded

The sinful believer must be avoided by the assembly

Verse 9 – ‘no company with them’ – speaking of public association
So-called brothers cannot walk together as one in Christ when their lives are diametrically different – it confuses the holiness of God before the world

This issue within the church is NOT easy, nor is it popular… many times, such discipline by a local church is misunderstood or misapplied. However, when properly administered in accordance with God’s Word, the desired outcome often results in repentance, reconciliation, and restoration. 2 Corinthians 2:1-11 speaks of the return of the repentant… embracing, welcoming, loving… The defense of the Holiness of God and his demands upon his people must be made! Consider 2 Corinthians 13:14.

	<itunes:summary>Text: 1 Corinthians 4:1-7
Topic: Understanding the truths concerning individual service in the church
When a person trusts Christ as Savior, he enters into a relationship with the Creator. The Bible describes this relationship in a variety of ways:

John 3 teaches that we are a Child in God’s Family
John 10 illustrates that we are Sheep in God’s Flock
Ephesians 1 shows that we are Members of Christ’s Body
2 Timothy 2 admonishes us to be a good Soldier of Jesus Christ
2 Corinthians 5:20 calls us Ambassadors of the King

1 Corinthians 4:1 calls believers “servants” and “stewards” of the Lord. Servants and stewards are required to be faithful (v 1-2) and that judgment/evaluation is postponed (v 3-5)

Spiritual Faithfulness is Required

Faithful Servants

The word for “servant” (translated “minister” in KJV) is different than the word translated in 1 Corinthians 3:5 (“deacon”), and rather was applied to an “under-rower” – a galley slave in a ship. This signifies the lowly place of a servant
The Servant of Christ must be willing to labor faithfully and dependably, usually “out of sight” in a position of less prominence

Faithful Stewards

The word for “steward” carries the idea of a trusted slave, an overseer of an estate (think Joseph in OT). This slave is given a position of responsibility and is required to account for his actions and decisions.
Stewards must be trustworthy – faithful and dependable, loyal to the master

All believers are to be servants in attitude and stewards by privilege

Spiritual Judgment is Postponed

Human judgment is of little value

The Corinthians were constantly judging (evaluating) other believers and their service
The church in Corinth passed judgment upon Paul’s service to Christ
Our service cannot be properly judged by man – to include ourselves (vs 3-4)

Human judgment is based on limited understanding

We have limited facts, ability, and time
All human judgment therefore is flawed in at least one way, and is unreliable
Notice Paul himself discounted his own ability to judge his service for God (vs 3-4)
“We are not declared righteous by a clear conscience”

Human judgment is presumptuous

When we judge/evaluate the service of others, we usurp the role of Christ
Jesus Christ is the only one qualified to judge
He is omniscient, omnipotent, and eternal – he is NOT limited
Christ will reveal hidden service and the motivations behind open service

As servants and stewards of the Lord, let us be found faithful and let us leave the evaluation of our service to the Lord! Remember that the flawed judgment of man is divisive in the work of the Lord and usurps the role of our Savior

Topic: Admonishing the believer to fulfill his patriotic duty
On this Independence Day 2010, we should examine our patriotic duty as understood from the scripture, while also considering our freedom in Christ from sin and death.
Abraham Lincoln once said, “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” We as American Christians have a patriotic duty as citizens in the greatest nation on earth to stand up for and defend the freedoms God has blessed us with.

Our patriotic duty to government (Romans 13:1-5)

Obedience to our government and laws
Prayer for our government

President
Economy
Law Enforcement

Remain educated and informed on current issues
Our patriotic duty to our Creator (Acts 17:22-27)

Understanding that God is “knowable”

Paul was not indifferent to those who were in spiritual darkness (v 17)
Paul sought to make known the “Unknown God”

Established governments are used to promote the knowledge of God (v 27)

God establishes all governments (Romans 13:1)
God has a purpose for each government and nation

Our God offers freedom from sin and death through Salvation

Challenge

We celebrate America’s 234th year of proclaimed independence – God has ordained and allowed the USA to exist for these many years that men and women may have opportunity to find and know God
Have you found the Lord? He is near and awaiting your faith and dependence in Him!
Thank God for the independence of our great Nation, do your patriotic duty for our Nation and in our service for the Lord!

Topic: Examining the wisdom of God
We live in an information driven world. Never before in the history of the world has access to information been readily available. The creation and expansion of the Internet has dramatically increased the availability of information to almost anyone. If you can type it, or in some cases, even speak it, you can find it. People in this day and age have immediate, continuous access to information via the Internet in their very pocket! There is hardly a day that goes by that I do not tap into the Internet for some kind of information. The Internet is a gateway into the understanding man’s wisdom, yet as good and as helpful as man’s wisdom can be, it falls short in that it can not explain the wisdom of God.

1 Corinthians 1 draws a contrast between man’s wisdom and God’s wisdom. Paul states that what God considers wisdom, man calls foolishness. A contrast between the wisdom of the world and the wisdom of God is seen throughout the chapter with words such as Foolish/foolishness (6 times) and Wisdom/wise (8 times). The wisdom of God is mentioned 4 times in chapters 1 and 2 (1 Corinthians 1:21, 1 Corinthians 1:24, 1 Corinthians 1:30, 1 Corinthians 2:7)

Identifying the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:1-5)

Wisdom of God Defined

“The wisdom of God” seems to make reference to a particular aspect of God’s omniscience
Word study

Romans 11:33 – The wisdom of God is immense and unsearchable
1 Corinthians 1:21 – The wisdom of God is His plan for saving those who believe
1 Corinthians 1:24, 30 – The wisdom of God is a Person, Jesus Christ

The wisdom of God includes the person and work of Jesus Christ
It is the power of God unto salvation for all who will believe

Wisdom of God Delivered/Demonstrated

The wisdom of God is not demonstrated through man’s abilities
The wisdom of God is demonstrated by the power of the Spirit.

The Spirit demonstrates (proves) that the gospel if truth
The Holy Spirit is responsible for changing lives
The wisdom of God is “Determined” – a deliberate act of His will (verse 2)

Application: Understand the how Paul felt! 2 Corinthians 3:5

Understanding the wisdom of God (1 Corinthias 1:6-13)

It was a mystery of God (Verse 7)

Hidden
Veiled

It is revealed by God (Verse 10)

Unveil
Make known

It is received by Christians (Verse 12)
Application: Have you come to understand the wisdom of God through Salvation? (Jude 1:24, 25)

Lessons from the 23rd Psalm
Sunday School, April 11

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Sunday Morning, April 11

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Sunday Evening, April 11

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Monday Evening, April 12

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Tuesday Evening, April 13

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Wednesday Evening, April 14

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Dr. Taylor attended Bob Jones University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible. <itunes:summary>Text: Acts 2:22-36
Topic: Illustrating how God the Father was in Jesus reconciling the world
Psalm 118 is one of 6 “hallel” psalms sung by the Jews at the Passover, and is a prayer of praise to the Lord. When Jesus entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the crowd had this Psalm in mind as they cried “Hosanna,” Save us now (Psalm 118:25-26). “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” By the end of that very week, the same people who welcomed him into Jerusalem where driving him out. They no longer viewed Jesus as one sent from God, but as one rejected by God. Did God the Father reject his Son? Peter set the record straight concerning Jesus and Jehovah in Acts 2:22-36, the text of this Easter message.

Jesus: A man presented by God (Acts 2:22)

The message of the presentation

Urgency of the message
Jesus was “Approved by God”
Jesus was a man presented by God

The means of the presentation

God demonstrated His approval of Jesus in three (3) ways

“Miracle” points to the power of God
“Wonders” indicates that the works were amazing
“Signs” indicate that the miracles pointed to something other than themselves

Jesus: A man predestined by God (Acts 2:23-24)

Predestined to be crucified

God determined beforehand that Jesus would be crucified
God delivered Jesus up!

Judas delivered Jesus to the authorities
Pilate delivered Jesus over to the Jews
God delivered Jesus up to be crucified

Predestined to be resurrected

God determined Jesus to be raised up (Acts 2:27,31)
The resurrection fulfilled an unconditional covenant promise that God made to David. An eternal kingdom demands an eternal King, not a dead one!

Jesus: A man promoted by God (Acts 2:30-35)

Promoted in heaven

Jesus was glorified in the resurrection and is in heaven today
Jesus sits at the right hand of God

Promoted on earth

All will bow the knee to Jesus

In light of these truths, what should we do?
Peter exhorted the crowds at Pentacost (Acts 2:37-38 )

Repent
Obey & Serve Him

Topic: Examining the characteristics of the true Church
In 1 Corinthians, we learn much about the reputation of Church at Corinth. They were spiritually blessed by God (1 Corinthians 1:5,7), they had it all (spiritual gifts in chapter 12), they were spiritually proud, they were carnal minded, and they were spiritually divided. In this first epistle, Paul had some tough things to say to the church, through the Spirit of God, but he prefaces these words by reminding the Corinthians who they really were in Christ.

Christians are the Church of God

They have a geographic address (1 Corinthians 1:2)

The Church which is “at Corinth”
1 Corinthians was written to God’s people who gather in Corinth
Written to those who were called upon by God to represent Him in that place
God is in the business of establishing churches in various places around the world to represent Him.

They have a spiritual address (1 Corinthians 1:2)

The church was “in Christ”
The Church of God consists of those who have been sanctified in Christ
When Christ sanctified them, they changed

1 Corinthians 6:11 tells us what they were – they were just like everyone else in Corinth, sinners
When God called them all of that changed

Verse 2 – “They called on the name of the Lord.”
Ephesians 2:8-9

We must be called by God in order to be in the Church of God.
We must be cleansed by Christ in order to be in the Church of God.
Both must be true!

Are you a member of the Church of God?

This does not refer to local church membership or affiliation
Have you experienced the call of God?
You can know that God is calling you by

An awareness that you are not right with God
Feelings of guilt and remorse for sin
Desire to trust Jesus as Savior

Do you have a spiritual address?

Jesus will save you if you call on His Name
It is the promise of God!

	<itunes:summary>Text: John 21:15-19
Topic: Demonstrating how failure does not disqualify the believer from future service
Consider the following men, and more specifically what they have in common:

Ludwig van Beethoven – was told by a music teacher “as a composer he is hopeless.”
Enrico Caruso – was told that “he couldn’t sing at all!”
Walt Disney – was fired from a newspaper because he “lacked imagination and had no original ideas”
Thomas Edison – was told by a teacher he was “too stupid to learn anything.”
Winston Churchill – failed the sixth grade
Albert Einstein – was unable to speak until he was almost 4 years old and his teachers said he would “never amount to much.”

Have you ever experienced failure or been told you will never amount to anything. Have you experienced feelings of guilt, frustration, anger, or despondency? That feeling is probably something close to what Peter must have felt when he denied knowing the Lord. As the 3rd denial passed over his lips and the rooster crowed, Peter must have realized that he had failed the Lord. Luke 22:62 tells us that after Peter denied the Lord looked at Peter, causing him to weep bitterly… Peter had sinned; he had failed his Lord. John 21:1-3 indicates that Peter experienced the same guilt, frustration, anger, and despondency that we feel when we fail the Lord.
Thank God that the words of John 21:15-19 are in the scriptures! They give hope because we, like Peter, fail the Lord. When we fail the Lord, is He through with us? Can we be restored? Is it possible to experience success after failure?

Check your heart

Do you really love God?

Jesus asked Peter to do some self-examination
Peter do you love me?
Do you love me with the kind of love that causes you to forsake everything for my sake?
Is it the kind of love that is willing to do whatever it takes to see my will accomplished?

Agape love in referred to in John 21:15-16
Peter was grieved that the Lord asked him 3 times concerning his love (John 21:17)

Are you willing to serve Him?

Notice what Jesus says to Peter at the end of verses 15, 16, and 17

“If you love me, feed my sheep!”
“Serve me!”

“Peter do you love me more than these?” (John 21:15)

What are the “these”? Other disciples? The catch of Fish?
Restoration comes when are willing to forsake everything and serve Christ.

Take up the task He has called us to do!
Rededicate ourselves to doing His will

Check your focus

Are your eyes on Christ?

Peter was not content knowing God’s will for him (John 21:20-21)

What about John? “What is your will for that man?”
“Why did Peter ask about John?”

Notice the Lord’s answer to Peter (John 21:22)

What’s that to you?
Peter, that is none of your business!
Don’t look at John! Look at me!

Our walk with the Lord is not dependent upon what He does with other believers (Hebrews 12:2)

Are you willing to follow Him?

Having set our focus on Jesus, don’t look away
Follow Him

Peter was used mightily by the Lord from this point on.

Peter preached at Pentecost and 3,000 were saved
God used Peter to take the gospel to the gentiles
Peter was used of God to write two NT letters

Yet Peter had to be restored first… Has the Spirit of God brought past failures to your mind? Seek the forgiveness in Christ (1 John 1:8) and allow Jesus to restore you, then keep His commandments and serve him!

Topic: Emphasizing the value of man’s soul for eternity
We have grown so accustomed to the principle of exchange in our society that we scarcely think about it. Even though we do not think in terms of an exchange being made, we exchange things every day. An exchange takes place when we are willing to give one thing for another. Common daily exchanges could include time, money, and products. Examples of these exchanges can be seen in:

Employment – exchanging the employee’s time for the employer’s money
Shopping – exchanging money for a products
Currency Exchange – exchanging one country’s currency for another

Matthew 16:26 speaks of a spiritual exchange, and it is in this context that Jesus speaks of the value of a man’s soul

Jesus speaks to His disciples about that which would soon take place in final days of Christ’s life on earth (Matthew 16:21-22)

Make His way to Jerusalem
He would suffer at the hands of the religious leaders
He would be killed
He would be raised to life again on the 3rd day
He was going to provide for salvation
He was going to pay for our sins
Peter stumbled over the paradox of who Jesus is and what He was about to do (Matthew 16:16)

“Thou art the Christ the Son of the living God!”
His thoughts must have been… “It cannot be God’s will for His Son to die!”
Jesus rebuked Peter for thinking with a terrestrial perspective (Matthew 16:23)

Peter had failed to consider the bigger picture
Peter made human interest his chief goal
The two (2) concepts of Messiah and suffering were wholly incompatible

The value of man’s soul

It is exceedingly precious

What is the soul?

Prior to God breathing into man the breath of life he was simply dust (Genesis 2:7)
He became a living soul.
We are our souls!

Consequently, man does not have a soul, he is a soul.
We are not bodies that have a soul, rather we are souls that have a body!
Our soul is exceedingly precious (Matthew 16:26)

“Would we be better off (profited) if we should have the whole world at the expense of our soul?”
“For what thing would you be willing to exchange your soul?”

It is everlasting

Not the same as the eternality of God, as God has always been and will always be
The soul of man had a beginning – it was created by God and will last for eternity

We are all going to live somewhere forever

There is life after death
If and when my body dies, the soul lives on
The soul is precious because it is eternal and because I am my soul

The exchange of man’s soul

The possibility of exchange

Implied in these verses is the fact that we are all going to exchange our soul for something

We can exchange it for the things of this world (Matthew 16:25)

Those who seek to keep their souls for themselves will lose it
At first glance, it appears that this world has much to offer with its fame, fortune, and prominence (Matthew 10:39)
Satan would have us believe that the things of this world are a worth our souls
We can exchange it for the things of Christ and eternal life (Matthew 16:24-25)

The process of exchange

Accept Jesus as Savior

Christ’s death will be of value only to those who are willing to die to sin and self
Give up all reliance on self and depend on Christ alone for salvation
Embrace Jesus as Savior
Deny self

Willing to once and for all say farewell to self
Willing to decisively accept pain, shame, and persecution for Jesus’ sake
Follow Him

Are you concerned for your soul this morning?
Are you living your life for self?
Have you trusted Jesus to save you?

Topic: To show how eternal life would never be a reality apart from God
Matthew 19 introduces a rich young ruler and his discussion with Jesus regarding eternal life. This account is recorded in all three of the synoptic gospels, all of which tell us a little bit about the man. Matthew 19:22 says he was a young man and Luke 18:18 states that he was a wealthy man. He was a spiritual man desiring to follow God’s law with a innate concern for what he must do to obtain eternal life. Yet in even his youth, it was ultimately the love for riches that hindered him from trusting in Christ and finding the truth of eternal life.

The greatest misconceptions in the world

“Salvation can be obtained through doing something”

Even though the man was religious, he was still not right with God
He thought that eternal life was acquired by “doing”

“Salvation can be gained being someone”

This was a good man
This was a sincere man
This was a man looking for answers
This was a man like so many people today

The greatest standard in the world

The commandments of God

Look at how Jesus answers in verse 17
Christ’s answer may be surprising

Why did Jesus answer by telling him to keep the commandments?
Was Jesus telling him that eternal life can be gained through obedience to the Law?

Not only that, but look at which commandments Jesus mentions.

All were from the “second table” of the law
All dealt with man’s relationship with fellow man
None of the commandments dealt with man’s relationship with God

Why didn’t Jesus tell him that man could not be saved by good works?

Needed to trust Christ!
Needed to repent!

The intent of the commandments

We do not know how much time elapsed between Jesus’ answer and the man’s response

“I’ve done all that from my youth up! What yet do I lack?”
“What additional good deeds must I be doing over and above all those which I have been habitually keeping from my youth?”

In Matthew 19:21, Jesus brought the rich, young ruler face to face with the fact that something was more important to him than being saved. Christ knew exactly what the man’s heart and offered a choice which would demand faith

There was something he was unwilling to give up

His money was his god
His countenance fell and he walked away without eternal life

Salvation is possible for those who are willing to deny self.

The greatest gift in the world

Salvation is impossible with man

Who then can be saved?

It is impossible apart from God
No amount of good works
No amount of self effort

Like a camel trying to pass through the eye of a needle

It is not just difficult, it is impossible
Man left to himself will never be saved

Salvation is possible with God

Be born from above
Be given the gift of faith (Ephesians 2:8)
Save the lost to the uttermost

Have you ever asked the question:
“What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Trust Christ today!

Topic: Christ’s return for his Saints is imminent!
We must be living our lives with the expectation of the Lord’s imminent return upon our minds. His return could happen at any time, nothing is preventing it from happening. We often say that, eschatologically speaking , “it is the next thing on God’s calendar” (although we know that God is not bound by time).

We hold to a dispensational view of eschatology, which allows us to understand that there are no prophesies that need to be fulfilled before the rapture of the Church. The following is a brief review of the eschatological events following the return of Christ for his Saints:

Following the rapture of the Church, Israel will sign a covenant with antichrist, initiating the period referred to as the “Tribulation.”
3 ½ years into the Tribulation, antichrist will break the covenant with Israel, marking the beginning of the last half of the Tribulation, which is referred to in Scripture as the “Great Tribulation” and the “Time of Jacobs trouble.” In this time, God will pour out His wrath upon the earth.
The Battle of Armageddon will conclude the Tribulation period, which will end in the destruction of the Armies of the earth and the casting of the Beast and false prophet into the Lake of Fire. Satan will be bound for 1,000 years in the pit of the abyss
The end of the Tribulation will issue in the Millennial reign of Christ upon this earth, in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and covenants. This reign will be a righteous reign where Christ will “rule with a Rod of Iron.”

At the conclusion of these 1,000 years, God will loose Satan for a time, leading to the final struggle between the unrighteous man and God at the battle of Gog and Magog
Satan will be cast into the Lake of Fire for eternity
The Lord will then judge all unbelievers, small and great, from all of time at The Great White Throne Judgment and they will be cast into the Lake of Fire.

Investigate the scriptural teachings of the imminent return of Jesus

The “Watching” Passages

Romans 13:11-12

Our salvation is nearer than when we first believed

Time of accounting for the saved
Time of judgment for the lost

A time to awake from slumber

Because our salvation is nearer than ever before
Because we have no right to sleep when there is work to be done
Because the days are evil and the enemy is at work even as we sleep

Topic: Believers must constantly look for the Lord’s appearing

Revelation 2:4 records the scathing rebuke of the Lord for the church at Ephesus, but they were not all words of rebuke.

The church at Ephesus was standing up to the task – Verse 1

“I know thy works, thy labor, and thy patience”
They were busy and active for the Lord

The church at Ephesus was standing up for the truth – Verse 2

“I know how that canst not bear them which are evil”
They tested those who claimed to be apostles, but were not

They claimed to be teachers of importance
They claimed to have authority
They were liars
I John 4:1 – “…believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God

The church at Ephesus was standing in the test – Verse 3

“Thou hast not fainted”

It was not easy going in Ephesus
Believers were criticized by the world
There was opposition
In spite of it all, they remained faithful

Were it not for what is recorded in verses 4 and 5, one would think that the Church at Ephesus was the model church!

Thou hast left thy first love – Verse 4
Thou art fallen – Verse 5
All that the Lord had commended them for in the first three verses meant nothing

The church at Ephesus was doing all the right things

It is possible to serve the Lord for a variety of motives

To gain the praise of men
For prestige
For position
For the sake of reputation
Out of a sense of duty

All service which is not born out of love and devotion to the Lord is worthless

This passage can easily be applied to the return of the Lord, and will kick off our theme for this year, Coming again in 2010?

2 Timothy 4:1-8

His appearing will be a time of judgment

All people will be judged
The living and the dead

Based upon the imminent return of Christ, Paul charges Timothy to Faithfulness

“I solemnly order you”
It is a mandate to us all

Judgment could be only moments away

2 Timothy 4:8

His appearing is a time of reward

Crown of Righteousness
For those who habitually loved and desired the Lord’s Appearing
“Do we merely give assent to the doctrinal truth of His imminent return, or do we show by our daily life that we love, yearn for, and await His appearing?”

Acts 1:8-11

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”
Have you left your first love?
Do you love his appearing?

Matthew 13 depicts the Kingdom Parables, and Christ explains their purpose in verses 10-11. In all, there are seven such parables dealing with the Kingdom of God:

Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-9)
Parable of the tares (Matthew 13:24-30)
Parable of the Mustard seed (Matthew 13:31-32)
Parable of the leaven (Matthew 13:33)
Parable of hidden treasure (Matthew 13:44)
Parable of pearl (Matthew 13:45-46)
Parable of the dragnet (Matthew 13:47-50)

Focus on Galatians 6:6-10

The overall principle is that we reap what we sow!

What we do with our material things is an evidence of how we value spiritual things (Matthew 6:21)

Matthew 13:7 tells us that God takes this principle seriously

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked
Christian’s live their lives in full view of God

What a man sows, that shall he also reap

We can invest in the flesh
We can invest in the spirit

<itunes:summary>Series: The Laws of the Harvest
Text: John 4:31-38
Topic: Understanding how we often reap much that we did not sow ourselves

As discussed in our introduction to this series, we are able to glean 7 distinct laws of the spiritual harvest from the scriptures. Our introductory text was Galatians 6:7-10. This message deals with the First Law of the Harvest: We reap much that we did not sow
Consider the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32
Give me what is mine!
I want my inheritance!
I have a right to it. It belongs to me and I want it now!
The prodigal was reaping the benefit of what his father had sown

The father may have received an inheritance from his Father
The prodigal reaped what he did not sow

We will reap…

Some things good and some things bad
Some things from men and some things from God

We reap physical blessing that we did not sow

Matthew 5:45
Acts 17:24-28

We reap spiritual blessing which we did not sow

John 3:16-17
1 John 5:9-12

An example from Billy Sunday – “What must I do to be saved?”

Consider John 4:31-38

Let us do what we can while we can.
Leave the results to God
1 Corinthians 3:7

<itunes:summary>Series: The Spiritual Laws of the Harvest
Text: Galatians 6:6-10
Topic: Introduction to a series outlining the cause and effect relationships between what we do and what we earn

Our God is a God of order, and He has established laws and principles that govern all things

Physical laws

Laws of physics are so reliable that God ties His promises to the reliability of those physical laws (Jeremiah 31:35-36)

Spiritual laws

The law of the perpetual evil of the sin nature (Jeremiah 17:9)
The law of continual conflict (Galatians 5:17)
The law of leaven (Galatians 5:9)
The law of temporal death (Romans 8:6)

In Galatians 5, we can suggest that there are seven laws that govern the spiritual harvest
The book of Galatians is important because it explains the believer’s relationship to the Law.

Galatians 5:18

Not under the Law of Moses or any other legal system
To be saved and to please the Lord

Galatians 6:7-10

No legal code will determine our righteousness before God

The Seven Laws of harvest

We reap much that we did not sow
We reap the same kind as what we sow
We reap in a different season than when we sow
We reap more than we sow
We reap in proportion as we sow
We reap the full harvest of the good only if we persevere; the evil comes to harvest on its own
We cannot do anything about last year’s harvest, but we can about this year’s

We will explore these seven laws over the next two months during our Evening Services.

	<itunes:summary>Text: John 17:1-19
Topic: An examination of Christ’s prayer for the Church as recorded in the book of John

James 5:16 tells us that the effectual prayers of a righteous man availeth much. If a man is right with God, that man is on praying ground, and God will not only hear his prayer, but He will answer it (e.g. Elijah).
1 John 2:1 & Hebrews 7:25 tell us that Jesus Christ, our High Priest, is constantly making intercession for us.
John 17 records the nature of Jesus’ prayer for the believer.

Verses 1-5, Jesus prayed for the mutual glorification of the Father and the Son
Verses 6-26 record Jesus’ prayer for the saint

Personal preservation
Spiritual sanctification
Familial unification

A request for the spiritual sanctification of the saint

The meaning of sanctification – Set apart for service / Dedicate as a sacrifice

Sanctification is the process whereby we become more and more like Christ as we become less and less like the world.
Romans 12:2 – Be not conformed to the world….
Romans 8:28 – Predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ

The means for sanctification

God accomplishes the sanctification process through his Word (John 17:17)

The Scriptures are able to make us wise unto salvation (2 Timothy 3:15)
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, for instruction in righteousness
The Scriptures are able to transform us into the image of Christ (John 17:17)

The measure of sanctification

Jesus sanctified himself (John 17:19)

He sanctified Himself by dedicating Himself to the will of God.
He was committed to the will of the Father
Nothing else mattered to Him
