Shakopee made it a regular-season sweep over the Chaska Cubs with a 5-4 victory Thursday night at Athletic Park.

The Cubs had ace righthander Ryan Seifert going great guns, but the Indians made the most of their five hits in the game.

The Cubs scored in the first inning, but that was all Shakopee lefty Tim Piechowski allowed over eight innings.

Highway 212 gets landscaping funding

The new section of Highway 212 from Eden Prairie to Chaska will get beautified next spring thanks to $750,000 in federal stimulus dollars.

Eden Prairie, Chanhassen and Chaska will each get $250,000 worth of landscaping improvements along the new corridor.

A few years ago, New York Times movie reviewer A.O. Scott wrote a eulogy for Charles Bronson.

Scott noted that “Mr. Bronson mixed it up with other roughneck character actors like Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine and George Kennedy, whose faces and physiques suggest that the 1960s were good years to be an ugly man in Hollywood.”

“Ugly” is a bad word, but I know what Scott was getting at. And his line came to mind when I was watching “Public Enemies” yesterday.

False alarm

The Chaska Police Department released this statement pertaining to the emergency sirens that went off this morning:

"The outdoor warning sirens were activated in Chaska moments ago. This was a false alarm. The county is aware…

"The City of Chanhassen is in control of a remote device, which activates the sirens; indeed, the sirens were activated without a legitimate cause. Chanhassen wrongly activated the warning sirens for the cities of Chaska, Victoria, and Watertown. Perplexingly the sirens did not sound in Chanhassen.

The results are in. According to The National Weight Control Registry found that 89% of people who lost 30 or more pounds and kept it off for at least one year accomplished their goals through a combination of diet and exercise. In that study only 10% succeeded using diet alone, and only 1% using exercise alone.

Sugar City 4-H seeks sweet memories

Computer science, rocketry, even robots – there’s no question about it, this isn’t your grandma’s 4-H.

And while members of the Sugar City 4-H in Chaska are markedly different from their early predecessors, this year they will pay homage to those that came before them.

Chaska’s 4-Hers are looking for memories and memorabilia from the club’s 75-year history. They are hoping to put together a scrapbook and a short film with the materials in order to celebrate the group’s past.

Klein mansion restaurant a go

A project to turn the C.P. Klein mansion on the corner of Fourth and Walnut streets into a fine dining restaurant is back on, after some successful brainstorming to make the financing work.

Developers Norm and Jan Kraus gave the council an update at its meeting Monday night. Things looked bleak for the restaurant recently with financing problems that were forcing the city to begin considering other options for the historic building’s reuse.

Jack Hendrickson, 66, of Carver, died Saturday, June 27, 2009.

Funeral service is Thursday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 300 Fourth Street East, Chaska. Visitation is Wednesday, July 1, from 4-8 p.m. at Huber Funeral Home, Excelsior. Visitation is also one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
