Seeing as it’s plastered pretty much everywhere, I’m sure you’re aware that the latest iteration of Microsoft Windows (Windows 8) was launched recently. Along with it came a new wave of PCs with 10 point Multi-touch screens to take advantage of the touch centric nature of the new OS. This got me to thinking… How long before we start to see touch friendly UI elements of programmes like Premiere, Audition & PhotoShop starting to appear? Some UI elements like the live faders in Adobe Audition for example already lend themselves to this potential paradigm shift, but it’s still along way from what’s possible. Sure, you can already invest in consoles / jog shuttles / Mixers e.t.c… & although there is the very valid argument that physical controllers are always going to be more ergonomic; why waste the opportunity that the infinitely customisable nature of a touch-screen offers? Case in point… Most video editors have a two or even three screen set-up: • Monitor 1. Primarily for the UI to control their programme of choice. • Monitor 2. Solely for viewing the output. • There’s often a 3rd monitor as well, for an observing client to view. So think about this scenario for a second: Throw your keyboard to the side & lay your multi-touch monitor (or flatten down your all-in-one) in front of you. Now you have a control-surface with customizable buttons, jog wheels e.t.c. Your 2nd & 3rd monitors stay where they are. Sure, for intricate inputs and fine control you can still have your mouse/pen & tablet off to the side… or in the case of VFX work (e.g., rotoscoping) or the likes of a bit of retouching work in PhotoShop – simply bring the Output down to the touch-screen “console” & work directly on it with a pen/stylus. For what it’s worth, I’ve already thrown MY contribution into the pot & as of posting this there’s about 48 hours left on the clock with just over 3,500 dollars to go to reach the target. It was touch and go for a while, but I think they might just make it. So I like the idea of Ctrl+Console… Will we see the Big Boys jumping on the Multitouch bandwagon with their UIs?… well, your guess is as good as mine, but in my humble opinion I think they’d be foolish to not at least have a good long look at the prospects on offer.

This week Manchester Central was taken over by BVE North, the “Premiere Northern Event for Production, Post and Content Delivery Professionals”. Heading into Manchester bright and early on the train, Chat Noir got to the hall just after 10am and it was already packed with delegates. As well as talks during the day by companies and industry professionals, a large number of exhibitors were also in attendance… …These included (links): Some of the highlights: Sony F5/F55 A prototype model was shown on the Sony stand with presentation followed by a Q&A. (The F5 is a cut down version of the F55, but for ease I’ll look at the cameras together.) These cameras are a substantial upgrade from the F3 offering, professional bit-rates, 13 stop latitude, 1080, 2k, 4k, global shutter (F55 only), beautiful designed modular system -definitely making these cameras ones to watch. A more integrated design than the Canon c300 / 500, as all the rigs and hard-drive systems have been developed by Sony, it can be used in module form on tracks or cranes, or as a full form-factor ENG style shoulder camera. Also a real competitor for the RED Scarlet, but I’m guessing at a far more economic price point, similar to the Canon c300 / 500. These cameras are robust, with all the connectors you’d expect / need. It’s very clear that they’ve been designed with the operator in mind. Black Magic Design – Cinema Camera This is something I’ve been both undecided and excited about in equal measure, as it appears to be both impressive and a little frustrating. Having spoken to various reps and having had a little hands on play, I have to say I’m edging towards excited. The ability to shoot raw, 13 stops latitude, 2.5k resolution were known pros with this camera, with a 90 minute onboard battery life being the main negative. As expected the choice of rigs and external power packs is vast, and pleasingly economic. Usability appears good – with the touch screen inference very much like a cut down RED camera. Production on these cameras has been delayed with a 6 month backlog, due to smearing of the sensors, but in fairness to BMD they have been up front about this problem and according to the rep we spoke to, they have sent all the faulty chips back to the manufacture to be replaced. According to the same Rep, stringent quality control measures have been put in place to ensure that “that sort of think doesn’t happen again”. I’ve never been a fan or a convert to the DSLR video fad and while not discounting their uses, I’ve always been of the opinion they were a stop gap before something better came along – something that was designed to shoot video and not stills. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera isn’t “the solution” but it is the first of a new breed of what I would call “Digital Movie Cameras”, at price that Indie Film Producers can afford. The choice...

Last week, Chat Noir Productions made the short hop over to Manchester to spend some time at BVE North, which took place on 13 – 14 November at ‘Manchester Central’. BVE North “celebrates the thriving content production and broadcast industries based in northern England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales”. Many of the leading suppliers in the sector exhibited & over the course of the two days a series of seminars were hosted on a variety of subjects. Over 3,000+ fellow industry professionals attended to get up to speed with the latest developments in video broadcast, content creation & delivery technologies at the only show of its kind north of London. So, what caught our eye?… Sony had their up coming F5 & F55 cameras on display, both very interesting additions to the Sony stable. Black Magic Design were a strong presence on the Expo floor with their Black Magic Cinema Camera (or ‘BMCC’), popping up in multiple locations. Least of all of these was the Holdan booth where a couple of reps from BlackMagic Design were showing off the merits of both the BMCC & (the awesome) DaVinci Resolve. As you would expect, Arri Group where there with the various iterations of the Alexa. Canon were showing off here latest models. The c300 seemed to be the model of choice with it not only taking centre stage on the Canon booth but also being shown of at several other booths as well, including the CVP booth. UPDATE: Read our more detailed thoughts on what we saw at BVE North HERE.

On Saturday 17th of November, Chat Noir attended the awards ceremony for the Wirral International Film Festival, held in Oxton Birkenhead. This was the 5th year of the festival, run by Alan Veste and Phil Bimpson of Vesbim and the second time a Chat Noir film had been submitted. Back in 2008 a rough cut of Dreamscape was submitted to the festival, going on to win the award for Best Feature Film. For the 2012 festival, the Lantern Project (new Brighton based Childhood Abuse Survivors Charity) submitted U.T.D. – (Unstructured Therapeutic Disclosure), the film Chat Noir had made for the charity that summer. Sadly due to prior commitments at BVE North, Chat Noir were unable to attend the films screening on Tuesday 13th, but happily were able to make it to the awards ceremony. As ever the Wirral International Film Festival was great experience, with lots of local talent, as well as a delegation from the Latina Film Commission.

Just a quick post to say that Unstructured Therapeutic Disclosure (U.T.D), commissioned by the Lantern Project & produced by Chat Noir Productions won ‘Best Social Awareness Film’ at the 2012 Wirral International Film Festival. We’re obviously delighted that a project that we saw from the scripting stage right through pre, prod, & post to final film has been recognised for it’s merits. However, we’re even more pleased that it’s a film on such a worthwhile cause that has been recognised. Our congratulations go out to… … the talent that were involved in bringing the film to the screen, those both appearing in & voicing the film. But most of all, our congratulations go to the folks over at the Lantern Project who deal with this subject matter every day. In particular thanks go to Graham for giving us the opportunity to apply our skills to highlighting this most ‘unfashionable’ of subjects & to Gary & Alan for having the steal-like courage to let us tell their stories. See the full report from the Awards Ceremony here.

On Wednesday of last week (Halloween), Chat Noir went along to the Indie Club meeting at Nine Lives Media in Manchester. This time round the get together was sponsored by Alias Hire (who now have an office at the Greenhouse in Media City), with a demonstration of the new Sony PMW-200 HD camera. In an increasingly dynamic marketplace for new cameras, the PMW-200 was of special interest to Chat Noir as it was a development of the EX1 and EX3 cameras the company has used with great satisfaction since 2009. These cameras have proved themselves to not only be robust and reliable, but also to produce stunning HD quality video in a variety of filming scenarios. Another great attribute of these cameras is the XDCAM EX recording medium (first introduced with the EX1) and which is continuing to be employed in the PMW-200. The XDCAM EX quickly become well established due to its easy integration into existing pipe-lines and the fact that it’s now widely supported raw on most NLE timelines. First Impressions The first impression of the PMW-200 is that it seems and feels smaller than the EX1, more the size and shape of the Sony HVR-Z1. Also, the spring-loaded screen that slots under the hand-grip on the EX1 has been replace by a flip over screen, again, very similar to the Z1. Playback controls are also located under this screen. The various audio and menu controls have been shifted around, but never so far as to be confusing. The two card slots have been moved from the side to the rear of the unit, but the cover is an improvement on the EX3′s rather flimsy cover. Lens and optics are practically identical to the EX1, focusing is very easy and the results crystal sharp. What’s Hot and What’s not? Frankly, this camera is very much an updated EX1, skipping the larger form-factor of the EX3 (which was starting to head into the territory of full form-factor cameras), for a lighter weight camera suitable for the likes of self shooting producers. One very noticeable change however is the loss of the rotating handgrip on the side of the body. The exclusion of this grip doesn’t sound like it should make all that much of a difference, but this was one of the killer features on the EX1 and EX3, making both cameras very flexible when it came to hand held filming. The loss of this feature is a huge retrograde step and an unnecessary one as it immediately restricts usability and increases wrist strain. The tech specs of the camera are a little more impressive. Unlike the EX1 and EX3, the camera records at 4:2:2 50Mbs making it inline with EBU standards. This is a great boon for anyone looking to shoot HD for broadcast, without the budget for higher-end HD cameras. The gain on the PMW-200 has been dramatically improved, with reduced noise on each db setting – perfect for documentary low light shooting. New hyper-gamma settings give...

The Lantern Project was established in 2003 to provide help and support for survivors of sexual abuse. Since then, they have supported thousands of survivors through their web site, publications and counselling facility in Wirral, UK. Having worked with The Lantern Project before and knowing what great work they do, we were thrilled when they approached us in late 2011 to discuss the possibility of commissioning Chat Noir Productions to develop and produce another Video Solution for them. Well, we’re happy to announce that The Lantern Project have just recently taken delivery of that latest production. It will play a major roll in promotion & delivery of the U.T.D counselling methods that are being pioneered by The Lantern Project. It will be screened to local and central Government, to leading experts in relevant fields both in the UK and abroad & will accompany the Book ‘Unstructured Therapeutic Disclosure’, which is an in-depth examination (with case studies) of the ways in which U.T.D can be used to resolve the complex psychological issues that manifest over time. Now for the selfless plug: it need go without saying that the entire project was handled in-house at Chat Noir. Please be aware the video does contain testimonies of survivors and may cause distress. On the Record we’d just like to say that we’re proud to have played our part for this cause, and as ever, if you’d like to know more about Chat Noir Productions and the services we can offer YOU, contact us here.
