May 31, 2013: Big Boi with special guest Killer Mike

A 20-year career as a Hip Hop artist is rare. A 20-year career as a Hip Hop artist who gets better with every album is unheard of. But in the case of Antwan "Big Boi" Patton, it's no surprise.

As one half of Outkast with his partner in rhyme Andre 3000, Big Boi blazed trails and broke blueprints with three certified classics; 1994's Southerplayalisticadilacmuzik, 1996's ATLiens and 1998's Aquemini. The duo then brought in the new millenium by selling four million copies of their genre-defying fourth studio album Stankonia only to follow it up with the diamond-selling opus Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.

Now, nearly a decade later Big Boi continues to break ground on his own with his second solo album Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors. The follow up to 2010's critically-acclaimed Luscious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty, Vicious Lies... seeks to bring the truth in an era where anything but is accepted as the real.

Jun 1, 2013: "Water Lovers" at In-Town Gallery in June

Linda White’s colorful art quilts stitch together snapshots of nature’s diversity. Primarily fish, ducks and birds, her fabric images present the illusion of their individual characteristics with colors, shapes and patterns created with a great sense of design. The opening reception from 5pm to 8pm on the First Friday, June 7, introduces this ‘stitch wizard’ and her new collection of unique fabric creatures in the gallery.

The artist’s machine-quilted fabric collages are carefully planned. Using basic sewing supplies and a standard sewing machine, White combines a variety of patterns to create her images of wildlife. Drawing inspiration from the multitude of designs found in nature, she uses the original form of actual animals as a basis for populating her imaginary world.

Beginning with a simple drawing, White selects particular fabrics to fit her sketch, or sometimes lets the pattern in the fabric dictate the shape to be used. When the design is complete, she layers it on batting and a backing fabric, as a quilt is assembled. Stitching them together is the final touch and an opportunity to add more complexity and detail to the work.

White’s interest in fish most likely comes from the many days she spent as a child traveling throughout the US and Mexico with her family on fishing trips. Whether it was the mountain lakes of Colorado, the flowing streams of Montana and Wyoming, or the salt waters of Mexico, every family vacation was about fishing. Her fascination with birds originated with having pet birds and watching the antics of the birds in her garden.

A nine-year member of the gallery, White also belongs to the Foothills Craft Guild and participates in their annual Fine Art Show in Knoxville. As a member of the Craft Artists of Southern Tennessee (CAST), a chapter of the TN Association of Craft Artists (TACA), she has won awards in their annual shows. Other recognition of her work in AVA’s Eye Candy show, the TN Valley Art Competitions, and the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum Quilt Shows attests to the creative excellence of her fabric images.

When: Sat.
Jun 3, 2013: Dropkick Murphys

This time around, everything has been cranked up past 10. The guitars are ballsier, the gang vocals are louder, the hooks are catchier, the lyrics stop you in your tracks. The brashest moments of "SIGNED and SEALED in BLOOD" feel like the last 30 seconds of a Stanley Cup hockey game: frenetic, on the edge, dangerous. The softest songs are testaments to the values that pump through the Dropkicks' veins: family, neighborhoods, honor, respect, roots and remembering those who are gone. Every second of "SIGNED and SEALED in BLOOD" is evidence of one thing: Dropkick Murphys aren't just loud and brash, they're at the top of their game as songwriters.

An irreverent look at a historical, political Tennessean, satirizing today's politicians in a world where the 24- hour news cycle creates rock stars out of everyone. Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson is a comedic Wild West rock musical about the founding of the Democratic Party. It redefines Andrew Jackson, America's seventh President, as an Emo rock star and focuses on populism, the Indian Removal Act, and his relationship with his wife Rachel.

Jul 1, 2013: "The Cartoon Buffet" at In-Town Gallery in July

Whimsey and exaggeration will take center stage at In-Town Gallery for the month of July when artist-member Bradley Wilson presents “The Cartoon Buffet” . This collection of new work consists of paintings and drawings depicting dancers, birds, fish, cats, flowers and other subjects in a humorous manner. All will be introduced at the opening reception from 5pm to 8pm on the First Friday, July 5.

The artist states that, “Increasingly, I am becoming more and more interested in taking a subject and stretching it, pulling it, squashing it, and generally twisting it up so that the overall effect surprises me. We’ve all seen countless paintings of dancers and birds. My goal as an artist is to take a familiar subject and play with it through exaggeration and distortion until it is presented as something unexpected and pleasing to myself, and hopefully to whomever sees it.”

Some of the pieces in “The Cartoon Buffet” also suggest a narrative that the viewers must figure out for themselves. In Wilson’s painting, “Navigating Through Birds and Snakes”, an elongated cat stretches across the canvas intertwined with a snake and surrounded by birds. There is an uneasy tension between the creatures in the painting. The viewer must wonder, “What is happening here? Is this just a painting of caricatured animals or is the artist suggesting some kind of story or message?”

“I like to personify animals and make humans look more primal. Sometimes my only motivation for creating a specific character is just for the fun of it. There is no meaning intended other than what the viewer brings to it,” Wilson explained. His painting process is fluid and organic. He constantly makes changes throughout the creation of the piece. His philosophy of painting is to be open and responsive to the moment. “Connecting with the present and finding the potential - this is what my work is about.”

Wilson, 43, is a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. He received degrees in painting from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (BFA 1994) and the University of Mississippi (MFA 1997). He is the Gallery/Visual Arts Director of the Creative Arts Guild in Dalton, GA. He resides with his wife, Mandy, seven dogs and one cat, Seeking to reach a wide range of collectors, his work varies from quick ink sketches on paper to large, multi-figured acrylics. His paintings, drawings, and sculptures are in many private and corporate collections in the United States and Europe. He has exhibited in galleries and museums across the southeast.

In-Town Gallery, founded in 1974, is one of the oldest cooperative galleries in the nation. It presents the original work of more than 30 regional studio artists. At 26A Frazier Avenue, between the Market Street and Walnut Street bridges, it is adjacent to Coolidge Park on the North Shore. The gallery is open every day year-round except major holidays. The group recorded its first demo the following year with producer Mark Lee Townsend, who has worked on each of the band’s subsequent full-length albums (although Five Score And Seven Years Ago was largely produced by Howard Benson).

In the ensuing decade, Relient K has released five full-length albums (of which three have been certified Gold), five EPs and a Christmas collection, toured incessantly, scored a string of hit singles, a Grammy nomination and two Dove awards, and performed on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and numerous other national TV shows. The Los Angeles Times praised Relient K for “its smart blend of punk pop and power pop, weaving together influences as diverse as the Beach Boys, Blink-182 and Fountains of Wayne” while Spin noted: “Few bands play punk-influenced modern rock as proficiently.” But the band’s quirky sense of humor remains intact and there’s a fresh excitement about the future.

Jul 12, 2013: Toad the Wet Sprocket

When Monty Python’s Eric Idle created the fictional band “Toad the Wet Sprocket” for the program “Rutland Weekend Television” in 1975, he never dreamed that anyone would actually use such a silly name. Fast forward to 1986, when four California teens desperately needed to come up with a name to call their band for an upcoming gig at a Goleta, CA watering hole called The Shack.

Since that day, “Toad the Wet Sprocket” has been the name of the four piece California rock band consisting of lead singer Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss. From 1989-1998, they made 5 studio albums which combined sold over four million copies, had five major radio hits, and won over audiences across North America and Europe.

After breaking up in 1998, Toad would get together sporadically to play shows on a casual basis, but their hard core fans never gave up hope for a new album. After successful tours in 2006-2010, the band finally decided to put the last piece of the puzzle in place, and committed to working together on new music. They also decided to update their classic catalog, and created a new Greatest Hits album “All You Want”, which came out in 2011.

Toad the Wet Sprocket are currently in the studio with producer Mikal Blue, and fans can look forward to a new release and extensive tour in 2013.

They eventually found themselves in Boone, North Carolina where they caught the attention of folk icon Doc Watson while playing in front of a pharmacy. He immediately invited the band to play at his MerleFest, helping to launch their career. Shortly thereafter the band relocated to Nashville for a residency at the Grand Ole Opry, where they entertained the crowd between shows.

It's been nearly fifteen years since these humble beginnings, and the band has gone on to tour the world, sell over 800,000 albums, become frequent guests on A Prairie Home Companion, and play renowned festivals like Bonnaroo, Coachella, and the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. In November of 2011 Old Crow's classic single, "Wagon Wheel", received the RIAA's Gold certification for selling over 500,000 copies.
