The word savalakaran denotes a community in Tamilnadu and Kerala.

I was informed by elders that the word Savalakaran is taken from the word Savalam which means a sword. In those days people who were assisting the king were holding

a sword in their hand. Some people say that they were leading a battalion who are called

as padaiatchi. Or servai. Therefore the word servai only denote a title given to the work done by the people and does not belong to the community. When the people were doing mainly agriculture they were called as vellalar so the name Savalakula vellala samugam is commonly known in Tamilnadu

The people in Kuniamuthur are doing mainly agriculture whereas the

People in kurichi village are employed in railways. In due course ,people have migrated to Tirupur for work, there mainly engaged in hosiery and cloth field as

Toilers , cutting masters and dyeing labours , some people engaged in business in all kinds of trade rice, oil merchants automobiles dealers and workshop owners etc.,

Some of the relatives are found in Kerala in and around palghat district and

Trichur their main occupation is music particularly Tavil and Nathaswaram.

Some people are in Palani Ayakudi, Balasamudram , Manur in those places

The main occupation of the people is fishing . The people in Palghat district are said to have migrated from Thenkasai and Ramnad Distrcit there are relatives found at

Paramakudi , Peria kulam,Tirunelveli and Madurai District In Paramakudi most of them are Dry fish merchants. In periakulam some people are doing agriculture

Some of our relatives in Chennai, Bangalore and Delhi on employment.

So far as education is concerned they are all only backward class only.

We understand that there are people in our community as advocates , judges.

Engineers doctors, Professors and lecturers in colleges. There are many degree holders

Some people have gone abroad also

The North Travancore Sree Rama Vilasam Chavalar Society is formed in 5th Meenam 1123 [1948 March 18]. After 62 years history shows the growth and development of sree Rama Vilasam Chavalar Society. The members of chavalakkaran society was less in member and also backward in educational and economic sector

Sree Rama Vilasam Chavalar Society worked for the development of its members. We honourably remember the personalities who worked for the society. Sri Kuttan s/o Nellikkuzhy Knnathukudy Makki, Sri Krishnan s/o Edanad Puthenkudy Kalavan, Sri Kuttan s/o Thankalam Kanjirakkat Ittimakothai, Sri Kittu s/0 Edanad Puthenkudy Konna, Sri Konna s/o Varapetty Paguthi Elangavan vellekkatt ittmakotha, Sri Ittaman s/o Nellikkuzhy Kunnathukudy Kalavan, Sri Kalavan, s/o Varapetty Kuruppamkara Ittimakotha, Sri Kannan s/o Thankalam Allakkattumali Kalavan, Sri Makki s/o Nagancherry Manjinakudy Ittaman, Sri Konna s/o Edanad Puthenkudy Konna, Sri Kakkara s/o Pindimana Kaliyath Raman are the 11 respected persons who jointly founded the society. All except Sri Kakkara are no more, though they all are immortal in our minds.

S.R.V.C.S. formed in 1948 with head office at Nellikuzhy, Kothamangalam, Ernakulam, promotes social, educational, economical, cultural and political interest of the backward classes with special reference to Chavalakkaran Community.For the last 62 years, the Sree Rama Vilasam Chavalar Society registered under the Charitable Societies Act, has been nurturing the national unity and integrity of our country.The society is striving for a casteless society by fighting against communalism, following the footsteps of the great Acharyas and social reformers like Sree Narayana Gurudev,

Adi Sankaracharya, Mahatma Gandhi , Swami Vivekananda,Chattambi Swamigal, Dr.Ambedkar, Mahatma Ayyankali, Agamananda Swamigal .

The vision of the society is a beautiful India by conserving the age old culture and tradition of our country.

The Mission is to mould the younger generation to face the challenges posed by the society. The younger generation must be equipped to apply rational thinking, scientific approach and modern technology in solving problems.

The members of the society are spread throughout the length and breadth of India, in countries like Malaysia, Africa, Singapore, Srilanka etc. In India, the community has its deep roots in Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Chattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab.

Eventhough the present occupation of the community is agriculture, a lion’s share of the community in Northern part of Kerala are artists.The ancestors of the community were supposed to be the frontlive soldiers of the Chola Kingdom.

Recently a good number of the community members were identified in Pazhani, Coimbatore and Chennai. The search for the communitymembers in Tamilnadu is still going on.

The organizational structure of the society consists of State Executive Committee, Union Committee and Branch Committee.

The society has supporting organisations like the Youth Wing, Women’s Wing, Family Units, Children’s Wing, Sree Rama Charitable Trust, Devaswam Committees, Employees Forum and Committee to look after Death Rites.

The Society promotes Seminars, Awareness Camps, Premarital Counselling Courses, Career Courses, Pre Examination Coaching Classes, Anchoring Course, Media Training Programmes, Prathibha Sanghamam, Kudumba Yogam, Leadership training programmes and cultural programmes.
