<b>ABSTRACT:</b> In this work, we present a methodology to characterise the axial dispersion of a solute during steady-flow through a compressible bed of wood chips under mechanical load. We use a non-invasive imaging technique, namely electrical resistance tomography (ERT), to visualise the uniaxial displacement of a salt solution. Here we demonstrate that under two limiting cases the porosity of the porous bed varies slowly in the flow-direction and to the lowest order can be considered a constant. This simplified the optimisation routine we used to match the experimental data to the numerical results of the advection–diffusion equation. Using this, a methodology to estimate the axial dispersion is given by a minimisation scheme. In the experimental portion of the work we measure the axial dispersion of a bed of hemlock wood chips at three different kappa numbers κ, and compacted to three different compaction pressures pc. We find that the dispersion De in the axial direction varies as a function of the porosity ε, according to $D_{{\rm e}} = a\varepsilon {}^{b} $, where a = 7.2 × 10−4 m2/s and b = −3.8 for hemlock wood chips. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering<br />

<b>ABSTRACT:</b> The vapour pressure of pyridine N-oxide was measured using a boiling point method at different temperatures from 389.02 to 546.33 K and the constants of the Antoine equation for the substance were determined. The vapourisation enthalpy of pyridine N-oxide at the normal boiling point is calculated to be 58.8 ± 1.8 kJ mol−1. Based on Othmer's method, the standard enthalpy of vapourisation ${\rm \Delta }_{{\rm vap}} H(298.15\;{\rm K})$ is estimated to be 66.6 ± 0.1 kJ mol−1 by using pyridine as the reference substance. Furthermore, Watson equation is employed to verify the reliability of ${\rm \Delta }_{{\rm vap}} H(298.15\,{\rm K})$and the results demonstrate that the value of ${\rm \Delta }_{{\rm vap}} H(298.15\;{\rm K})$ is acceptable. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering<br />

<b>ABSTRACT:</b> This paper reports an analytical and numerical study of mixed convection heat and mass transfer of a binary fluid in a vertical parallel plate channel filled with a porous medium. The thermal conditions applied on the walls of the system are uniform heat fluxes. Both the cases of double-diffusion and Soret-induced convection are considered. The governing equations for the porous medium rely on Darcy's model. The governing parameters for the problem are the Rayleigh number, Ra, Peclet number, Pe, Lewis number, Le, buoyancy ratio, φ, aspect ratio of the channel $A = L'/H'$ and the constant a (a = 0 for double diffusive convection and a = 1 for Soret induced convection). The resulting problem, in the limit of fully developed mixed convection, is solved analytically in closed form. A numerical solution of the full governing equations is demonstrated to be in good agreement with the analytical model. The temperature and velocity fields and the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are obtained in terms of the governing parameters. The possible existence of reversed flows in the channel is discussed. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering<br />

<b>ABSTRACT:</b> In this study, the performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell at different channel geometries is investigated experimentally. Three PEM fuel cells with different channel geometries with 25 cm2 active area and Nafion 117 as membrane with 0.004 g/cm2 platinum for the anode and cathode are employed as a membrane electrode assembly. Some parameters such as input oxygen temperature $(45^{{\circ} } {\rm C}\,\leq \,T_{{\rm O}_{2} } \,\leq 65^{{\circ} } {\rm C})$, input hydrogen temperature $(40^{{\circ} } {\rm C}\,\leq \,T_{{\rm H}_{2} } \,\leq \,60^{{\circ} } {\rm C})$, cell temperature (45°C ≤ Tcell ≤ 65°C), input pressure (1.905 bar ≤ P ≤ 4.905 bar), oxygen flow rate $(0.5\,{\rm L}/{\rm min}\,\leq \,{\dot {m}}_{{\rm O}_{2} } \,\leq \,0.1.3\,{\rm L}/{\rm min})$, hydrogen flow rate $(0.3\,{\rm L}/{\rm min}\,\leq \,{\dot {m}}_{{\rm H}_{2} } \,\leq \,0.9\,{\rm L}/{\rm min})$ and geometry of channels (1 ≤ Z ≤ 3) affect the performance of the cell. A series of experiments are carried out to investigate the influence of the above parameters on the polarisation curve under the above conditions. A semi empirical equation is offered to correlate the data for the polarisation curve. The results show that when the geometry of channel is rectangular, the performance of the cell is better than the triangular and elliptical channel. Also, results show that increase in the operating temperature and pressure can enhance the cell performance and they are compared with the results of the correlated equation and a good agreement exists. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering<br />

<b>ARTICLE TITLE</b> : An estimate of the axial dispersion during flow through a compressible wood-chip bed<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>ABSTRACT:</b> In this work, we present a methodology to characterise the axial dispersion of a solute during steady-flow through a compressible bed of wood chips under mechanical load. We use a non-invasive imaging technique, namely electrical resistance tomography (ERT), to visualise the uniaxial displacement of a salt solution. Here we demonstrate that under two limiting cases the porosity of the porous bed varies slowly in the flow-direction and to the lowest order can be considered a constant. This simplified the optimisation routine we used to match the experimental data to the numerical results of the advection–diffusion equation. Using this, a methodology to estimate the axial dispersion is given by a minimisation scheme. In the experimental portion of the work we measure the axial dispersion of a bed of hemlock wood chips at three different kappa numbers κ, and compacted to three different compaction pressures pc. We find that the dispersion De in the axial direction varies as a function of the porosity ε, according to $D_{{\rm e}} = a\varepsilon {}^{b} $, where a = 7.2 × 10−4 m2/s and b = −3.8 for hemlock wood chips. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering<br />

<b>ABSTRACT:</b> The vapour pressure of pyridine N-oxide was measured using a boiling point method at different temperatures from 389.02 to 546.33 K and the constants of the Antoine equation for the substance were determined. The vapourisation enthalpy of pyridine N-oxide at the normal boiling point is calculated to be 58.8 ± 1.8 kJ mol−1. Based on Othmer's method, the standard enthalpy of vapourisation ${\rm \Delta }_{{\rm vap}} H(298.15\;{\rm K})$ is estimated to be 66.6 ± 0.1 kJ mol−1 by using pyridine as the reference substance. Furthermore, Watson equation is employed to verify the reliability of ${\rm \Delta }_{{\rm vap}} H(298.15\,{\rm K})$and the results demonstrate that the value of ${\rm \Delta }_{{\rm vap}} H(298.15\;{\rm K})$ is acceptable. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering<br />

<b>ABSTRACT:</b> This paper reports an analytical and numerical study of mixed convection heat and mass transfer of a binary fluid in a vertical parallel plate channel filled with a porous medium. The thermal conditions applied on the walls of the system are uniform heat fluxes. Both the cases of double-diffusion and Soret-induced convection are considered. The governing equations for the porous medium rely on Darcy's model. The governing parameters for the problem are the Rayleigh number, Ra, Peclet number, Pe, Lewis number, Le, buoyancy ratio, φ, aspect ratio of the channel $A = L'/H'$ and the constant a (a = 0 for double diffusive convection and a = 1 for Soret induced convection). The resulting problem, in the limit of fully developed mixed convection, is solved analytically in closed form. A numerical solution of the full governing equations is demonstrated to be in good agreement with the analytical model. The temperature and velocity fields and the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are obtained in terms of the governing parameters. The possible existence of reversed flows in the channel is discussed. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering<br />

<b>ARTICLE TITLE</b> : Correlation of the performance of a PEM fuel cell at different channel geometries<br />

<b>ABSTRACT:</b> In this study, the performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell at different channel geometries is investigated experimentally. Three PEM fuel cells with different channel geometries with 25 cm2 active area and Nafion 117 as membrane with 0.004 g/cm2 platinum for the anode and cathode are employed as a membrane electrode assembly. Some parameters such as input oxygen temperature $(45^{{\circ} } {\rm C}\,\leq \,T_{{\rm O}_{2} } \,\leq 65^{{\circ} } {\rm C})$, input hydrogen temperature $(40^{{\circ} } {\rm C}\,\leq \,T_{{\rm H}_{2} } \,\leq \,60^{{\circ} } {\rm C})$, cell temperature (45°C ≤ Tcell ≤ 65°C), input pressure (1.905 bar ≤ P ≤ 4.905 bar), oxygen flow rate $(0.5\,{\rm L}/{\rm min}\,\leq \,{\dot {m}}_{{\rm O}_{2} } \,\leq \,0.1.3\,{\rm L}/{\rm min})$, hydrogen flow rate $(0.3\,{\rm L}/{\rm min}\,\leq \,{\dot {m}}_{{\rm H}_{2} } \,\leq \,0.9\,{\rm L}/{\rm min})$ and geometry of channels (1 ≤ Z ≤ 3) affect the performance of the cell. A series of experiments are carried out to investigate the influence of the above parameters on the polarisation curve under the above conditions. A semi empirical equation is offered to correlate the data for the polarisation curve. The results show that when the geometry of channel is rectangular, the performance of the cell is better than the triangular and elliptical channel. Also, results show that increase in the operating temperature and pressure can enhance the cell performance and they are compared with the results of the correlated equation and a good agreement exists. © 2011 Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering<br />
