Over the past year, MechaWorks went from being one web site (PhoneNews.com) to a network of four major sites, and two great apps (MobileWiki and MobileEdition). As we close in on the end of our first year in business, we have a lot more planned for next year. We’re even more excited about what’s ahead.

But, clearly, we didn’t get it right so far with CheapenGadget.com. While it’s typical to blame the economy, that’s only one part of the equation. Granted, launching a site all about cutting-edge deals, in the middle of a deal recession was going a bit against the grain.

We’ve also had issues in finding a chief editor. Despite numerous calls to hire someone, and offering unprecedented pay, bonuses, and options, we haven’t been able to achieve that. Every other MechaWorks site has its own chief editor, and we feel that’s necessary for long term growth.

Finally, the level of interaction hasn’t been right. Until recently, we’ve really been scratching our heads on that point.

No, this isn’t a long-winded note that we’re shutting down CentralGadget.com. We still believe in the site, and we’re going to relaunch it… with slow, steady, and notable growth in the coming months.

First, we’re going to pool resources, and pull together efforts, all while continuing the search for a chief editor. We encourage you to help out on that. Even if you’re employed to the max, we’re sure a lot of readers know some bloggers that have hit the unemployment line.

Also, we have a plan to really bring up the interaction here in a new, innovative, easy, and fun way. It’s something completely new that we’re just putting into testing. Until then, you’re going to see the news return to the normal pace that you would expect.

When the console was first released on September 9th, 1999 it was the first console to feature online play and web access via dial-up and broadband (rare was the neighborhood that was wired for DSL and Cable based internet service at the time, rarer still was the near mythical Broadband adapter) and was developed jointly with Microsoft as it ran Windows CE primarily for game development, which was a constant failure in practice.

The Dreamcast also introduced the concepts of voice and motion control long before the Wii was a passing thought in Shigeru Miyamoto’s mind as Samba de Amigo and Seaman introduced maracas and a microphone accesory for primary game control.

For many people and enthusiasts alike, the Dreamcast will be remembered for its faithful ports of arcade fighting games from Capcom and SNK which have yet to be surpassed on a current console to this day.

Another reason the Dreamcast is remembered, for more dubious reasons, was the ease in which games could be pirated simply by inserting the GD-ROM into a computer, extracting the data via an iso ripping program, and burning to CD-R.

Piracy was so rampant on the Dreamcast, many games that were heralded as potential system sellers were canceled due to piracy fears (Half-Life was the most famous example of this, as the game was to include the original single-player game along with the Blue Shift/Counter-Strike expansion before being unceremoniously canceled a week before ship date) and decreasing sales due to the EA Sports boycott and hype surrounding the Playstation 2, which was stated to be more powerful than the Dreamcast and include DVD playback, which ultimately ended up being Sony’s trump card in the console wars of the time as the Dreamcast faded into failure due to consistently low sales.

When the original Microsoft Xbox was released in 2001, it didn’t take long for astute observers to recognize the similarities between it and the Dreamcast while making improvements to the Dreamcast DNA.

The Xbox featured a modified Windows 2000 kernel, featured a built-in Ethernet port, DVD drive and the Duke controller design also mimed the Dreamcast controller while making needed additions for the new game design philosophy that was taking hold.

There are even those that say the Microsoft Xbox was a secret collaboration between Sega and Microsoft, as the console also featured sequels and remakes of many popular Sega developed franchises that first appeared on the Dreamcast.

If you are a collector, you would be doing yourself a disservice to not pick up a new in box Dreamcast. If you are a bystander curious about what Sega used to be before bowing out of console development, pick up the console as well and browse ebay for cheap games, as you will not be disappointed.
