Why Overstock.com backtrack from O.co?

After spending millions on promoting O.co moniker, Overstock.com apparently backtracked the effort.

At a glance it seemed that O.co is so much better than Overstock.com, with all the right ingredient of the perfect brand: short, easy to remember, sightly mysterious. But if really look into it, O.co has a major shortcoming which can cause major problem for the business.

What do you think it is? You would probably know it too, just trust your feeling.

Why Me?

Today I got a chance to discuss my progress of medical tourism directory with Andy and Izak. It was a quick 15 minutes discussion. So I quickly went over all the figures and facts, and all seems well with Izak agreeing on the need and Andy think the numbers quite adds up as a business.

Then comes the bomb.

“Why you?”, Andy asked. “Are you a doctor?”, added Izak. I was lost on words. Err… No, I’m not a doctor. “You see, in the health industry, trust and credibility is very important. You are not a doctor. You are not a celebrity. Why should people trust you and your site?”. I don’t recall the exact words, but it’s really “Why you?”

Why me?

My time was up.

Next, Mandy presented what Izak described as best idea of the day. I couldn’t understand anything. I couldn’t hear anything.

I was angry. I was disappointed.

I took a long walk. Yeah it was still in the Plaza Senayan mall. The meeting was in Marche at 5th floor of Plaza Senayan. So I was walking from floor to floor, from top floor to ground floor, from one end to the other end, thinking, “Why it can’t be me?”.

I could just approach a few top doctors. I don’t believe I can’t find anyone that can endorse me or support the idea. Well, that would do it. Not a problem.

Why me? Because I can do it !

That should settle it. I went back to Marche, hoping that after their meeting with other Founders, I can catch either Andy, Izak or Novis for quick guide to some assignment problems.

Andy and Izak left early, no chance to ask questions. But I was lucky to talk with Novis to discuss the problems I had and review my business ideas. To be frank, it wasn’t really because I was lucky, it was more of because Novis is so kind and so helpful to offer advices even though it’s past Marche closing time.

Thanks, Novis. You are so super cool. Just in case you didn’t know that.

Really. Why me?

As I was on my way back home, on the back of an ojek, I pondered again. Why me?

Why me?

And I finally found the answer. With the cold night wind blowing against my face, I was enlightened.

Should I Go With One Product or More?

So, I joined Founder Institute Jakarta. That’s an incubation program with very interesting system. So far we had sessions from Adeo Ressi, Andy Zain, Eka Ginting, Izak Jenie, Martin Hartono, Scott Rafer, and KF Lai. The mentors are all awesome, and some are crazy, but well, that’s another story.

In the program, we are split into groups, with whom we work closely to discuss ideas and questions. Yesterday there was this interesting question from a peer in my group.

You know how I put down 3 ideas, but somehow all 3 are the same (as in all are software/hardware gadgets). What do you all think if i just say my company wants to make cool and creative gadgets (—, —, —, because all 3 require more or less the same components anyways, but different software

I feel like I understand a bit on your dilemma.
So here is what I think, and is hopefully somewhere close to what the mentors will think as well.

I’m sure you have brilliant technical skill. Your ideas reflect that.
And I have no doubt you are able to handle all the three projects.
The question is, how are you going to split your time between the three?

Split the time equally?
That means basically you are tripling development time of each project before they even hit the market.

Or just do whatever interest you at any point of time?
You’ll soon find out that you will be drawn to one project more than to the other two.
This one project that draws more of your interest is probably the one you want to focus on from the start.

In fact, if none of the 3 projects capture your thought in most of your waking time, which means you didn’t take any personal interest into it, you’ll probably end up with a mediocre product, not an exceptional and awesome product.

That is what I can say from my personal experience.

When I say it’s from personal experience, I meant it.

I started SG-House.com in February 2006 and Singapore-Restaurant.com in September 2006, and plenty of other sites also in the same year. While Singapore-Restaurant.com was started 6 months late, the site quickly catch-up with SG-House.com and in December already match the traffic.

So there is relatively strong growth Singapore-Restaurant.com . Which should have been trigger for me to spend more time on the restaurant site than the property site. But it didn’t happen.

At that time, I work on both sites during my spare time after day job. Everytime I think about my sites, it was always about SG-House.com. I felt that Singapore-restaurant.com has bigger chance for growth, but I just can’t bring myself to work on it. Everytime I’m on my laptop, it’s SG-House.com. Whether checking analytics, making small tweaks, or submitting to online directories, SG-House.com is the only site I could focus on.

I think the connection is there with SG-House.com cause I personally experienced how hard it was to find good rental. But for Singapore-restaurant, there is hardly this connection; I have meals from time to time in various restaurants, but it’s more or less depending on mood and situation rather than deliberately choose the best restaurant.

In 2010, iProperty.com.sg and PropertyGuru.com.sg are both excellent, easy to use property sites with big resources. Mission accomplished. So I sold SG-House.com to iProperty. By right, I should come back and work at Singapore-Restaurant.com , but still it doesn’t happen. There is simply no chemistry there. And without chemistry, it doesn’t work.

Well, why I’m writing this? It’s actually more of a reminder to myself. Cheers…

Meet Scott Rafer, The Man In A Clown Suit

It’s hard to make out what to expect from a speaker when he started by saying he will contradict the speaker just before him and then proceeded to show you a clown face in his slide. But well, that’s what Scott Rafer (@rafer) did for Startup Research session at Founder Institute Jakarta 2 days ago, and it turned out to be awesome.

He talked and babbled, from about wearing clownsuits to riding waves to penny gap. But really, what I think is most invaluable from the short session was lessons from his personal experience in building great successful (and also failed) businesses.

I had the luxury of meeting him again yesterday to help me shape medicmedic.com, a medical tourism business directory, and that 30 minutes happen to be probably the most productive 30 minutes in my life. He has this super knowledge of what’s going on in the internet industries around the world and where to find what.

Like, what are the similar services that I can learned from? And like, do you know what Indonesian and Malaysian riches have in common? They go to Singapore to get their health fix. And this Singapore medical tourism industry is worth probably five billion dollar in medical bills alone.
