New research seems to suggest that there could be a link between social-economic status, diabetes and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The results of recent studies into the relationship between these factors can be seen to indicate that children whose mothers have gestational diabetes mellitus and who are also born into poorer families, could have a higher chance of developing ADHD during childhood. Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a form of diabetes which tends to develop during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. The condition which has been becoming increasingly common over recent years. It is also a type of diabetes which is particularly common amongst those with low socio-economic status. This latest discovery from Queens College at the City University of New York could have an effect on everything from the way in which mothers suffering from the condition are treated to the cost of Aviva health insurance. It could also mean that those who are most at risk are given more information surrounding ADHD, and how to spot the signs of this condition. However, as GDM is a diabetes which is not diagnosed before pregnancy, it is unlikely to be something which will be able to be taken into consideration by those trying for a baby. There are [...]

Lantus Solostar is a pen that is used to take insulin. This Lantus Solostar pen is simple to use and helps in insuring that the patient is having right dose of insulin every time. It helps in controlling sugar for 24 hours. It should be taken once a day at the same time of the day. Lantus Solostar Dosage The diabetic plan of different people is different and this is the reason that it takes some time to arrive at right dose of Lantus Solostar. In the starting, the doctor recommends only a small dose of Lantus insulin to the patient. The doctor then follows up to see how that low dose helps the patient in lowering blood sugar level. The dose is then adjusted accordingly to reach at the apt dose for the patient. The changes in dose are done in small quantity at a time. However, it is very important to regularly check the blood sugar levels. Many things affect blood sugar level of a patient such as exercise diet, stress. Hence keeping a check on diabetes helps in controlling it. Lantus Solostar Needles Only sterilised needles are used in Lantus Solostar pen. The needle is changed after every use. You cannot use same needle twice for injecting insulin [...]

What is U-500 insulin ? U-500 is regular insulin that is available in United States since the year 1952. However, recently doctors have started prescribing this medicine commonly to patients who require high doses of insulin in order to control their blood sugar level. This medicine is prescribed for patients who are facing increasing obesity along with type 2 diabetes and their bodies have become resistant to insulin. This resistance to insulin necessitates the need of insulin of more than 200 units/day. At present, several health care professionals are unaware of this concentrated insulin formulation. U-500 has pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic profile which makes it different from U-100 human insulins as well as analogues. There is no specific clinical trial to prove the efficiency of U-500 insulin. However, there is an eight case series that has been published. It reports infrequent or rare occurrence of hypoglycaemia with use of U-500 insulin. The medication errors that are linked with the use of U-500 insulin are generally due to dispensing and administrating errors. The pharmacists that prescribe U-500 should be aware of complex issues associated with its correct prescribing and dispensing. Patients should be properly guided about its use to minimize the errors related to its administration and dosage. U-500 Insulin – Insulin [...]

Diabetes is confirmed only when pancreas either produce insufficient quantity of insulin or produces no insulin at all. Sometimes the cells do not properly respond to insulin produced by pancreas. Many treatments are available for this disease but there is no permanent relief from it. There are so many myths prevalent about diabetes among people that confuse them about the facts. The American Diabetes Association has listed some common questions or doubts about diabetes prevalent among American people. Question: Is Diabetes a common health problem and not a serious issue? Answer: It has been revealed by studies that diabetes alone is responsible for as many deaths as combined deaths caused by AIDS and breast cancer. Diabetic people are more likely to have heart and kidney problems. Question: Should Diabetic people eat special food suitable for them? It is also known as pre-diabetes and syndrome X. This ailment is revealed when the insulin gradually loses its efficiency in sweeping up the blood glucose from the blood stream inside the zillion cells that our body is comprised of. The concentration of insulin increases really fast to destructive levels and thus harming our arteries and vascular system. When our body begins to show signs of hyperinsulinemia, our pancreatic beta cells mainly increase the creation of insulin and thus this continues our capacity to quickly drop down the post prandial blood glucose. At a certain point of time, in the course of the deficit of the usefulness of the insulin, our pancreatic cells may no longer turn out sufficient insulin to handle post prandial as well as fasting glucose. When this happens, Type2 diabetes is detected. Hyperinsulinemia Symptoms Hyperinsulinemia can cause hypoglycaemia in few patients. Only then the symptoms of hyperinsulinemia also show up.
Steering clear of sugar is the most imperative dictum for all diabetics. That is the reason why sugar alternates are used in lieu of table sugar. But it is imperative to have enough information about all these substitutes of sugar before consuming them. Sugar Substitutes for Diabetics Most of the sugar substitutes available in the markets are not reckoned as a component of our everyday carbohydrate consumption. They are all calorie free and are endowed with a sugary taste. But some sweeteners like Sorbitol or Mannitol can lift up the blood sugar level. The most secure way to use these substitutes is to use them in homemade dishes and beverages. Splenda® is the product name for sucralose and it hangs on to its taste whilst being used in cakes and hot drinks.
A person is said to be diabetic when glucose levels in his blood rises. It has become a common disease these days. The reason being sedentary lifestyle, faulty food habits, lack of physical activity etc. Generally carbohydrates that we consume are converted into glucose. A hormone secreted by pancreas, called as insulin breaks down the glucose to make it absorbable by body cells. During this process, glucose is converted into energy. When pancreas produces insufficient amount of insulin, or human body becomes insulin resistant, glucose starts accumulating in blood which leads to diabetes. It is possible to keep diabetes under check with medicines, diet control and exercise. However, if this problem is not diagnosed on time, it may lead to serious consequences such as heart problem, kidney problem, liver disease and damage to eyes and nervous system.
The clinical practice recommendations by American Diabetes Association are available in a publication which comes out in the month of January every year. This information is available on their site too and you can get it from there free of cost. The American Diabetes Association Guidelines 2011 are not much different from previous guidelines. Hence, the doctors need not to change the way they practice that much. The guidelines of 2011 differ in terms of screening for gestational diabetes. Picture 1: Symbol of American Diabetes Association Source: diabetes.org Cutpoints of American Diabetes Association Guidelines The fasting cutpoint is equal to or greater than 92 mg/dL The hourly cutpoint is equal to or greater than 180 mg/dL The 2-hour cutpoint is equal to or greater than 153 mg/dL In case, a woman is above these cutpoints, she needs to be diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Every woman, who had gestational diabetes in the past, must be screened at least once every three years to ensure the type2 diabetes do not develop in future. Targets The targets are still applicable as they were in previous guidelines. The doctors had a number of clinical trials since last some years that had led to confusing data regarding the safety of normalizing the levels of blood [...]
