Laughing out loud

I needed a few good laughs today and I remembered this blog that a friend mentioned. After just a few minutes browsing the front page of the site, I was literally laughing out loud. Hahaha! Good Times Manila is one good creative piece of work and it's not necessarily clean fun but I like it anyways.

Just to clarify, all these are the “fictionary” works of the author and although the characters are popular political personalities and celebrities and may refer to current issues, artistic creative license was used to craft such wild tales and stories. The joke blog is a work of pure genius and you have to read it to see what I mean.

It deservingly won a blog award and I must extend my applause. So if you have a lazy afternoon or a few hours to spare, hop on over to Good Times Manila for a few laughs.

That Paramore fiasco

My plurk has been ablaze with Paramore related posts since Tuesday, March 9, 2010. Understandably so, because it was the day that they were holding a concert here in Manila. So I read posts about how excited they were to be attending the show and how some were even lucky enough to score VIP tickets as a complimentary pass from the sponsors. These are bloggers. The VIP tickets were being sold for Php 10,000 each while the Gold tickets were at Php 4,000. Let me point out that that's a Php 6,000 price difference.

Now this is the original zoning for the ticket holders at the concert.

Come the next day, when I opened my timeline again there were mixed posts about the concert. Some were extremely happy about the performance of the band and of course there were raves about Hayley but there were also frustrated posts about the production management. It turns out that just moments before the start of the concert, the VIP ticket holders were mixed in with the Gold ticket holders. Meaning the zoning wasn't enforced anymore. This of course enraged the people who paid an extra 6K to get the best view and the best location for the concert. That was really unfair.

Of course, the rage is also shared by the bloggers who were there at the concert and although they enjoyed the show they couldn't help but feel sorry for the people who didn't get their money's worth. Being bloggers, they posted about this on their corresponding blogs and microblog sites. One of them even posted an official statement coming from the local producers themselves in order to appease the frustrated VIP holders who have now taken to the net and social networks to air out their disappointment and have been demanding for a refund.

Today, comes more frustration for everyone because the local producers have asked the bloggers who posted the official statement to retract the post lest their foreign producer counterpart gets wind of it. My immediate reaction was WTH??? I'm not going to post the official statement here but it involves a compromise to the VIP holders for the fiasco which to my opinion is not worth it. But it really smells like something fishy is going on here. I do hope that they iron this out well and that they appease the disgruntled concert-goers soon. On the bright side though, I think this would be a valuable lesson to the organizers and hopefully, the next time a foreign act comes along, there wouldn't be any more mix-ups like this.

Little Yellow Flower drizzle

This was what I saw when I got to my car after work the other day. There was a shower of little flowers everywhere and this was by far the worst I’ve seen.

I had to rush to the nearest carwash to have Vicky (the name of my car) cleaned. When I saw her, I was thinking my poor poor car. Needless to say, I don’t park there anymore. Well at least until summer is over and the tree has finished its shedding.

How to train your Dragon

Dreamworks Animation proudly presents, How to train your Dragon, a new film by Chris Sanders and Den DeBlois and also produced by Bonnie Arnold. The cast includes Jay Barucher, Gerard Butler, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Craig Ferguson, Kristen Wiig and TJ Miller.

The movie is an adaptation of the book by Cressida Cowell which is set in the world of Vikings and wild dragons. The story centers about a boy who was facing initiation rites and has to prove his worthiness to his tribe and father. Their tribe revolves around fighting dragons as a way of life on the island of Berk. On his hunt, he befriends an injured dragon and what begun as a hunt became the start of a good friendship.

A look into a piece of history

Last weekend was something different for me. First, I woke up very early to join a small group of bloggers who were invited for a tour to view the "After the Fact" exhibit at Lopez Museum. I am very much into anything that has to do with Arts and Culture so I was excited about all the artworks I would see. The Lopez Museum and Library is now located at the ground floor of the Benpress Building right at the heart of Ortigas in Pasig City.

After the Fact is a collection of different aspects of the Filipino culture that transpired in the past which had a significant effect in the present and ultimately has in a way also shaped the future. The Filipiniana collection is comprised of paintings and studies from famous Filipino painters like Ben Cabrera, Juan Luna and Felix Resurrecion Hidalgo. There were also sculptures from Claro Ramirez and of J Elizalde Navarro. There's also a delightful collection of rare books, manuscripts and letters housed in the library.

The tour was separated into galleries, with each artifact and artpiece telling its own piece of heritage and a significant part of our culture. Here are the ones that I particularly like:

LO2 Squares by Ann Pamintuan

This is probably the first artpiece you'll see upon entering the museum. I loved the simplicity and the artistic way that she was able to twist and weld the metal strips into these interesting patterns.

This was a only a painting study done by the painter before he paints the final artwork but still its counterpart in history was gruesome as well as unforgettable.

Espana y Filipinas by Juan Luna

This is probably the most beautiful painting housed in the gallery, it is framed very nicely fronting a hallway. This painting was an allegory of Spain and the Philippines depicted by two women.

This is the library housing some very rare books and a cluster of paintings also done by the masters. A central case contains original letters from Rizal for his family and some very very old books.

I enjoyed looking at some old maps in the map gallery with some dating back for quite a few decades.

A Flying Machine for Icarus by J Elizalde Navarro

The After the Fact exhibit is now duly open to the public and if you want a look into our past and get a heaping serving of how rich our Filipino culture and history is, I strongly encourage you to visit this exhibit and see the pieces of history for yourself. A compilation of the backgrounds and historical entries for each artpiece is further discussed in detail in the book Unfolding: Half a Century of the Lopez Memorial Museum and Library. This can be bought inside the museum providing accurate information as well as a great companion for the exhibit.

I stumbled on this very interesting Deviantart gallery through the Tumblr posts of my dear friend Beth. It's an on-going compilation of random trivias presented in a form of typography art. The gallery is made by Gem Goode who goes by the name tistwas on Deviantart. Here's her take on the series:

I've been reading "Life Of Pi" By Yann Martel and it's really interesting, although I can't tell you specifically what it's about, it's so random, but that's another story! (Literally)

So, in this book, there's some amazing facts about animals and such, and I thought to myself "Wow... You learn something every day!" Which then gave me the idea to draw, paint or create a piece of art that symbolises or explains something I've learned that day. I've decided to do this every day for a year and see if you really do learn something every day!

Green Dining

Normally when I hear of a restaurant renovating, I usually just see fresh new re-designed interiors, so when I got invited to Le Bistro's launch of it's new look I was surprised to find that not only did they renovate their interiors but they have a whole new menu concept and a new restaurant name as well.

Le Bistro Vert was born from the brainstorming over a meal of food lovers, Chit Juan, Jeannie Javelosa and Reena Francisco. The name itself translates from its French meaning as "The Green Bistro." The new menu of sustainable foods at Le Bistro Vert are the culinary creations of Chef Sau del Rosario with the help of his assistant Chef Michelin Galang, who was trained from Australia.

Le Bistro Vert now proudly offers a re-vamped menu of French cuisine infused with Asian influences. The sustainable menu boasts of produce from local farmers which are only grown naturally and not touched with any synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. The "green" theme, was not only reflected in the menu, the new look of the interiors carried out this concept as well. I was delighted to learn that my former boss, Architect Dan Lichauco had a hand in the interior design.

From the last time that I visited this restaurant for the Blog4Reviews party last year, there are now golden bamboo and vine filigree murals lining the wall. Architect Lichauco chose bamboo because it's a sustainable material and an easily recognizable icon for Asia. A big wall mural can be seen upon entering the restaurant, it is a whimsical piece of underwater treasures in vibrant colors of red and oranges. To finish off the look, teal and green upholstery were used on the chairs, giving it a contemporary cool color palette.

I got to the event a bit late but I was still able to enjoy a few hours bonding with fellow bloggers and the food.

Tagaytay Farmed Vegetable Lasagna

The first dish I ordered was the Tagaytay Farmed Vegetable Lasagna. My order came in an oval dish topped with a slice of garlic bread. The serving was just enough for one person. This was the first time that I've tried a vegetable lasagna and this won't definitely be the last. It was light and the wasabi bechamel sauce was just right. The mix of veggies complimented one another and the Davao cheese has just enough saltiness in it.

Chicken Satay

The next item that caught my eye was the Chicken Satay. The strips of chicken on a stick was served on a bed of cucumbers and peanut sauce on the side. Again, this was sooo good. I made a good choice in choosing this. The peanut sauce has just enough spiciness and a bit of zing but it was not overpowering. The chicken was also soft and not dry.

Dalandan Shake

For my drink I ordered a Dalandan shake. This was good too, not too sweet and not too sour either. It was just perfect for my taste.

The concept of sustainability was also introduced to us via the brand Echostore Sustainable Lifestyle. We were each given gift tokens from Echostore containing a hand sanitizer and soap. The ECHOstore Body Basics line are being sold at their Branches namely at The Podium and at Serendra. I love the peppermint hand sanitizer I got. I've gotten so used to having lemon or pear as the smell of the hand sanitizers I used and I think I'm going to shift to peppermint from now on.

We got to try out this newly opened restaurant near Fitness First at Greenhills Shopping Mall. It's very near the newly constructed steel 3-level steel-decked parking space.

The name itself doesn't give away what type of cuisine it serves, just the promise of good eats. Inside, one can tell that it is a Chinese restaurant with a modern asian interior setting.

Because we were anticipating a much heavier meal right after a movie, we ordered light. I had my first taste of xiao long pao. It's a mini-siopao bun with soup inside. I'm really curious about how it's prepared and I'm sure I glimpsed the method while channel surfing at home. The xiao long pao was good although I liked it better not dipped with the sauce it came in.

We shared one serving of roasted pork and duck rice topping. The pork was cooked just right and the duck was good too. The meal however wasn't meant for two and I wish it was served in bigger portions.

For our side dish, we also ordered one serving of fried shrimp and pork dumpling. The dumpling was crisply alright, although I would have liked more serving of the filling instead of the dumpling wrapper. For some reason, the fried dumpling made me dizzy, could it be the oil that they used? Maybe it's just me.

All in all, the food that we tried here were great for a really affordable price but I may have yet to try their signature dish before I can properly rate the restaurant.

A collection of Olympic Logos

Here are all the logos used in the previous Olympics and yes although I have to agree that the 2012 olympics logo is rather unique and different (ok ok, people just really hate it), I have also presented here the alternative logos that designers have come up with.

How I spent my Valentine's Day

This year my Valentine's went a little bit different, well mostly because it was a special day for the Chinese as well. It's also Chinese New Year and what better way to spend it than at it's heart in the Philippines - Binondo.

I won a special slot for a blogger's food wok on Dong's travel blog by leaving a comment. I won't say it in detail what my comment was, except that it must've been special enough to catch his attention. Hahaha

So off we were to Binondo and you can instantly feel the festive spirit in the air. There were so many people and I've probably seen all the colors that are made for the lions. Lion dances abound in the streets. There were a lot of New year trinkets and Chinese memorabilia being sold on the streets.

I was wearing a tank top and jeans because a special someone warned me that there might be firecrackers on the streets. I wouldn't want a scratch on my legs do I? I didn't want to bring an umbrella so I wore a cap instead. The sun was high up by the time we set out from the Manila Post Office which was our meeting place.

I probably lost a lot of pounds from sweating profusely on the streets of Binondo but I worked up an appetite as well. I'll be blogging about my food adventures separately in the coming posts.

My trip to Binondo was memorable. I should have worn red. The Chinese wore something red that day, and I felt strangely out of place not wearing any red, but then again I'm not Chinese. :-P We also trekked to the different temples and ooohed and aaahed over the giant gold buddhas that we saw.

It was a great way to spend Valentine's day and I got to meet and bond with new friends. I also managed to take a lot of good pictures during the walk. I noticed there were a lot of people there armed with the DSLRs too (mine's only point and shoot). By afternoon, I was beat. The heat was more than I'm accustomed to everyday and it zapped my energy. Although I had fun, I was also eager to get home and rest.

My taste of Vietnamese noodles

After a blogger's event, we decided to get a quick bite at Pho Hoa. This is the first time I've ever tried Vietnamese noodles. I believe the proper name for the noodle soup is "pho". It typically contains noodles made from rice and is served with basil, lime and bean sprouts that can be added to the soup according to the customer's taste.

The soup was good and the broth was just right. It wasn't too salty or oily for that matter. I ordered Special Noodle soup and had a bit of the Shrimp rolls. The orders came in a white large bowl good enough for two, but surprisingly enough I was able to finish my bowl. The shrimp rolls were good too, but they were quite a mouthful to eat. Although it's still incomparable to Chinese hand-pulled noodles which I love by the way, this is something that is still worth a try.

Valentine's Day movie

SPOILER ALERT!

I was fortunate enough to get invited to a press screening of this movie. (Thank you very much to Ms. Sionee and Warner Bros!) Valentine’s Day is the story of several strangers whose lives were somehow interconnected as they celebrated in different ways, February 14 – Valentine’s Day. There was a story about love, betrayal, singlehood, the love of a parent, exploration, declaration and disappointments. Each of the characters themselves provided a unique insight about how each of us can experience love. It also provided a reality that some are not lucky enough to find it.

What I love about the movie

I love the different perspectives on love. I also love how their lives were all tied up by the flower delivery business owned by Reed, Ashton Kutcher’s character.

I watched with delight as Jennifer Garner’s character, Ms. Julia Fitzpatrick, put Dr. Harrison Copeland (Patrick Demsey) in his place in front of his wife. I really do hate cheaters and it serves him right.

I also loved Julia bashing a heart-shaped pinata with a vengeance during Kara’s (Jessica Biel) I hate Valentine’s day party. That must’ve felt good.

There was also the subtle addressing of teens exploring their sexuality and it wasn’t presented in a vulgar way.

I also liked that gay declaration part and the little surprise in the end. Haha! I wouldn’t have guessed.

What I don’t like about it

I don’t like the Taylor & Taylor scenes. I know this is the movie where Taylor Swift makes her acting debut as Felicia but to be honest, she just plain sucked. Taylor Lautner was of course, fresh from his Twilight glow and it was a bit strained when Felicia was asking him to take his shirt off. Frankly, the movie would have done just great without their scenes. It was really unnecessary. If it was used to generate hype, well I don’t get it.

Overall this was good movie to watch. It’s not too mushy and not to heartbreaking either. The lightness is just right not to leave a bitter after taste if you were single come Valentine’s Day. For a romantic comedy, I think the director of Pretty Woman did a good job..
