Every home has that one room that lingers on the to-do list long after the major renovations are finished. This dining room was exactly that space.

The foundation of the makeover had been completed months earlier, but the finishing details were still missing.

As any designer or DIY enthusiast knows, those final touches are often what bring a room together and make it feel intentional rather than unfinished.

Before and After

The transformation in this dining space is one of my favorites in the entire house.

What was once a dark, dated room became a bright and airy gathering place filled with contrast, texture, and character.

One of the biggest lessons from this makeover is that you do not always need a full renovation to create dramatic results.

Strategic updates, thoughtful finishes, and a clear design direction can completely change how a room feels.

Updating the Cabinet Doors

The first thing that needed attention was the cabinetry.

The original cabinet doors felt busy, and the large gaps between them made the entire wall feel disjointed. Because the cabinets occupied so much visual space in the room, they naturally took center stage, making them impossible to ignore.

Rather than replacing the entire cabinet system, new shaker-style full-overlay doors were installed from Fast Cabinet Doors.

The larger door fronts reduced the visible gaps and gave the cabinetry a cleaner, more custom appearance.

This simple change made the cabinetry feel more like a built-in feature than an afterthought.

If your dining area includes a china cabinet, built-in storage, or sideboards, updating the doors can often create a dramatic improvement without a complete replacement.

Painting the Wood Floors

The floors in this room were always a challenge.

Unlike the surrounding rooms, these floors were not original to the house because the dining room had once been a covered porch. The wood species differed from that of the adjacent flooring, making the transition feel disconnected.

If this had been a forever home, a completely different flooring solution might have been installed. Herringbone brick was high on the wish list. However, as with many renovations, budget considerations helped guide the final decision.

The existing floors were still in good condition, so instead of replacing them, they were painted. The fresh finish helped unify the room and created a bright backdrop that allowed the furniture and architectural details to stand out.

White floors are not for everyone, but in this room, they made a huge impact.

Painting the Wood Paneling

The room was originally covered in wood paneling from floor to ceiling.

While wood paneling can work beautifully in some homes, this particular space felt heavy and dark. Since painting paneling had worked so well in previous homes (see it here), it was an easy decision to repeat the process here.

Painting the paneling white instantly brightened the room and eliminated the need for costly drywall installation. It also helped create a cleaner canvas for the high-contrast design direction.

Sometimes, the most effective makeover projects involve working with what is already there rather than tearing everything out.

Creating a High-Contrast Look

Once the major updates were finished, it was time to focus on the overall design.

The goal was to create a designer dining room that felt fresh, bright, and visually interesting without becoming overly decorated.

Because the room has so many windows, wall decor was not really necessary. Instead, the design relied on contrast to create visual impact.

Dark charcoal velvet curtain panels from IKEA were installed around the windows. Their rich color provides a striking contrast against the white walls and painted paneling. The curtains also help frame the windows and add softness to the room.

Playing with different colors and contrasting finishes is one of the easiest ways to create a room that feels professionally designed.

The Dining Table and Chairs

The dining table became one of the room's stars.

A raw wood dining table brought warmth back into the space and prevented the black-and-white palette from feeling cold. The natural wood tones balance the painted finishes and add an organic element to the room.

The cane chairs were a Facebook Marketplace find that received a makeover of its own before joining the space. Together, the table and chairs create a relaxed but elevated look that works beautifully in both a dining room and a formal dining space.

This combination proves that mixing old and new pieces often creates the most interesting interiors.

Finishing Touches

The decor remained intentionally simple.

A black vase, layered rugs, updated cabinet hardware, and a statement light fixture were enough to complete the room without overwhelming it. The abundance of natural light already provided so much visual interest that the space did not need much else.

One of the most important things decorators learn over time is that not every surface needs to be filled. Sometimes, allowing a room to breathe creates a stronger design than adding more accessories.

Tips for Making Fluffy Pancakes

A few simple techniques can make a huge difference when making pancakes from scratch. Measuring the dry ingredients carefully, using fresh baking powder and baking soda, and avoiding overmixing the pancake batter all help create fluffier pancakes.

One common mistake is stirring until every lump disappears. A few small lumps in the batter are perfectly fine and actually help keep pancakes tender. When cooking, wait until bubbles begin to form on the surface before flipping the pancakes.

Cooking on a properly heated griddle or skillet over medium heat also helps create evenly cooked pancakes with a beautiful golden color.

Before You Begin

Print the PDF pattern at 100% scale and cut out all of the template pieces with scissors. Before cutting into your fabric, double-check that the pattern pieces print at the correct size.

A ¼-inch seam allowance is used throughout the entire project.

Because several pieces are curved, clipping the seams and trimming excess bulk before turning will help the finished pieces hold their shape much better.

Sewing the Teapot

For the teapot body, cut six main body pieces. Two coordinating fabrics were used for this sample, creating alternating panels around the teapot.

Sew together one piece from each fabric along one side, right sides together. Repeat until you have two sewn pairs and two remaining single panels. This arrangement creates the alternating design around the finished teapot.

I know the picture shows three pairs, but you really only want two sewn pairs and two single strips.

Next, sew the handle pieces right sides together, leaving one short end open for turning. Turn the handle right side out, lightly stuff it with Polyfil, and stitch the opening closed by hand.

For the spout, fold the fabric piece in half lengthwise with right sides together. Stitch along the long edge, leaving the angled end open. Turn the spout right side out, add a small amount of stuffing, and stitch the angled end closed.

Arrange the teapot body pieces right sides together, placing the handle and spout between the fabric layers on opposite sides. Pin everything securely before sewing.

Leave a small opening in one seam so the teapot can be turned right side out later. After stitching, clip the curved seams, turn the teapot right side out, and fill it firmly with Polyfil. Hand sew the opening closed using an invisible ladder stitch.

Making the Teapot Lid

The lid is made from two circular pieces that create a slightly raised shape.

Sew each circular section into the notched area indicated on the pattern. This gives the lid its curved, conical shape.

To create the lid knob, cut a small fabric circle approximately 2 inches in diameter. Sew a gathering stitch around the outer edge, place a small ball of Polyfil inside, pull the thread tight, and stitch the opening closed.

Attach the fabric ball to the center of one lid piece.

Place the two lid sections right sides together and stitch around the outer edge, leaving a small opening for turning. Turn the lid right side out, lightly stuff it, and stitch the opening closed. The finished lid should rest neatly on top of the teapot.

Sewing the Teacups

Each teacup is constructed using two rectangular pieces and two circular bases.

Place a rectangle and a circle right sides together and sew around the curved edge to create a cup shape. The finished piece will resemble a small fabric bowl.

 Here is a pic of what the bottom will look like when you are done.

Repeat this process until you have two cup sections for each finished teacup.

Press the top edge of each cup section toward the wrong side by approximately ½ inch. Consistency is more important than an exact measurement, so simply make sure all the teacups are folded by the same amount.

Turn one cup section right side out and leave the other with the wrong side facing out. Insert one inside the other so all raw edges are enclosed between the layers.

Topstitch around the upper edge to secure both layers together and create a clean finish.

Adding the Teacup Handles

Fold a handle piece so the wrong sides face each other.

Topstitch around the outer edge, folding the ends under as you sew for a finished appearance.

Shape the handle into a circle and hand stitch it securely to the side of the cup. Repeat for all teacups.

For a more decorative finish, lace trim can be added around the top edge of the teacups. The trim may be sewn in place or attached carefully with hot glue.

Sewing the Saucers

Each saucer requires two fabric circles.

Place the circles right sides together and sew around the edge, leaving a small opening for turning.

Clip small notches around the curved edge to reduce bulk and help the saucer lie flat. Turn the saucer right side out, press carefully, and hand-stitch the opening closed.

Repeat for each saucer needed for your tea set.

Finished Fabric Tea Set

Once all of the pieces are complete, arrange the teapot, teacups, and saucers together for a soft and adorable tea set. The lightweight fabric construction makes them easy for children to carry, stack, and play with during tea parties.

This project may take a little patience, but the finished set becomes a treasured handmade toy that can be enjoyed for years.

Prepare the Design in Cricut Design Space

Begin by uploading the SVG file into Cricut Design Space and adding it to your canvas.

The shadow frame used for this project measures 12 x 12 inches. To fit properly inside the frame, resize the design to approximately 10 inches wide. If you are using a different frame size, simply adjust the design dimensions to fit your project.

Before cutting, double-check the size and placement of the design on your canvas. This is also a great time to experiment with different fonts or sizing if you want to create your own version of the project.

Once everything looks correct, click Make and follow the prompts in Cricut Design Space to cut the design.

A Cricut Maker, Explore, or Joy Xtra can all complete this project as long as the design fits within the machine's cutting area.

Weed the Vinyl Design

After the Cricut machine finishes cutting, carefully remove the vinyl from the mat.

Use a weeding tool to remove all of the excess vinyl surrounding the design. Take your time around smaller letters and detailed areas to avoid accidentally pulling up part of the quote.

Once the excess vinyl is removed, the design is ready to transfer.

Apply the Vinyl Saying to the Frame

Cut a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than the vinyl design. Place the transfer tape over the vinyl, then use a scraper to firmly burnish the surface.

Slowly peel the paper backing away from the vinyl. As you pull it back, check that the vinyl is lifting with the transfer tape.

If any part of the design stays behind, press it again with the scraper and try peeling more slowly.

Before placing the design onto the glass, clean the glass surface and remove any fingerprints or dust. This helps the vinyl adhere properly and prevents debris from becoming trapped underneath the design.

Carefully center the quote on the glass and press it into place. Use the scraper tool again to smooth the vinyl onto the surface.

Slowly remove the transfer tape while making sure the vinyl remains attached to the glass. If any section begins lifting with the transfer tape, press it back down and continue removing the tape slowly.

If you notice any air bubbles, use the scraper tool to gently push them toward the nearest edge of the design.

Finish the Shadow Box

Once the vinyl quote is applied, remove the back of the shadow frame.

Place a sheet of glitter paper behind the glass and secure it inside the frame. The glitter creates a beautiful background that makes the quote stand out while adding extra sparkle.

Replace the back panel and secure it according to the frame manufacturer's instructions.

That's it! In less than an hour, you have a custom Cricut decor piece that looks beautiful when displayed on a shelf, hung on a wall, or placed on a desk.

Before You Start

If you have wood trim sitting directly against carpet, there is no point pretending this is the most enjoyable project on earth. It takes patience, careful prep, and a little bit of faith that you won't ruin the carpet.

• Will paint end up on the carpet at some point? Probably.
• Can it usually be cleaned up if you catch it quickly? Most of the time, yes.
• Should you sand your wood trim before painting? Ideally, yes.
• Was every piece of trim sanded during this project? No.
• Did the paint still adhere well enough? Yes.
• Was the finish absolutely perfect? Not quite.
• Would this same process be used again? Absolutely.

Sometimes older homes require balancing perfection with practicality.

Why Paint Wood Trim White?

Many older homes were finished with stained wood trim, and while it may have looked beautiful when it was installed, it can sometimes make rooms feel darker or more dated.

Painting wood trim white instantly brightens a space and helps walls, furniture, and decor stand out. It is also much more affordable than replacing trim throughout an entire home.

In this particular house, the previous owners had beautiful woodwork throughout nearly every room. The trim was in excellent condition, but painting it white helped create a cleaner and more updated look.

The Prep Work

Preparation is what makes the biggest difference in the final result.

Start by moving furniture away from the walls and laying down drop cloths to protect the floor. Even careful painters deal with occasional drips, so protecting the area first saves a lot of cleanup later.

Use a damp rag to thoroughly wipe down all of the trim. Years of dust, grime, and household buildup can prevent primer and paint from adhering properly.

Once the trim is clean and dry, inspect it closely for nail holes, dents, or damage. Fill any imperfections with wood filler and allow it to dry completely according to the package directions.

If there are gaps between the trim and the wall, now is also the perfect time to apply caulk. This small step makes painted trim look much more finished and professional.

For the best results, lightly sand the trim with fine-grit sandpaper. Sanding helps remove shine from the old stain and gives the primer something to grip.

If you decide to skip sanding, as happened during this project, just know that extra coats of primer become even more important.

Protecting Carpet and Floors

If your trim sits against carpet, this step requires a little extra patience.

Apply painter's tape directly along the edge of the trim. Work in small sections rather than trying to tape the entire room at once.

A paint shield or paint guide becomes incredibly helpful here. Slide it between the carpet and the trim, pushing it down as far as possible. This creates a barrier that helps protect the carpet while allowing paint to reach the bottom edge of the trim.

Once the tape is in place, attach plastic drop cloths to the taped area for additional protection. Carrying a small canvas drop cloth around the room is also a good backup plan in case the plastic tears.

Priming the Wood Trim

When covering stained wood trim, primer is not optional.

A high-quality bonding primer is the best choice for blocking stains and preventing them from bleeding through the finished paint. Zinsser Primer is the best primer because it provides excellent coverage over stained wood surfaces.

Apply the primer using a brush, working carefully along the edges and corners. If your trim sits against carpet, continue using the paint shield while painting.

Three coats of primer were needed to fully cover the stain. It may sound excessive, but wood trim often requires more primer than expected, especially when transitioning from dark stain to white paint.

Allow each coat to dry completely according to the manufacturer's directions before applying the next coat.

Painting the Trim

Once the primer has cured, it is finally time for paint.

A semi-gloss finish is often considered the best paint finish for trim because it is durable, easy to clean, and helps highlight architectural details.

Apply two coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry fully before moving on. Some areas may need a third coat, especially if the original stain was very dark.

To minimize brush marks, use long, smooth strokes and avoid overworking the paint. Working in manageable sections helps maintain a more even finish.

Painting trim can feel repetitive, but seeing the bright white color gradually cover the stain makes the effort worthwhile.

The Finished Results

Window trim is usually much easier to paint because there is no carpet to worry about. Once everything is finished, the difference is incredible.

For this home, the must-have list included:

A Helpful Exercise Before Finalizing Floor Plans

This particular home ended up being about 2,850 square feet with a 1.5-story layout. The main floor held most of the living spaces, while the second floor provided additional bedrooms and flexible space for the kids.

There was also an unfinished basement space planned for the future. That extra area created room for possibilities later on, like a rec room, hangout space for teenagers, or even a future guest or studio apartment setup if needed.

One thing that mattered more than overall square footage was making each room feel spacious and functional. A smaller home with smart design often feels better than a huge home with wasted space.

Main Living Areas and Open Floor Plans

When designing the main living spaces, several popular layout options are worth considering.

The layout chosen for this home featured an L-shaped arrangement among the kitchen, dining room, and living room. This type of open floor plan keeps the spaces connected while still giving each area its own purpose.

Another common option places the dining room directly between the kitchen and the living room. Some families also prefer completely separated rooms, which can create a quieter and more formal feel.

There is not really a right or wrong answer here. The best layout depends entirely on how the family uses the space.

For this home, keeping the kitchen connected to the main living area made the most sense because it allowed the home's center to remain active and connected during busy family life.

Functional Spaces Matter More Than People Expect

Once the main layout is chosen, the smaller functional spaces become incredibly important.

Things like mudrooms, laundry rooms, bathrooms, and pantry placement may not sound exciting at first, but these are the spaces that make everyday life easier. 

Laundry Room

The laundry room was intentionally placed near the back entry and kitchen area because that is where most daily activity happens.

While some people prefer laundry rooms near the bedrooms, this setup made more sense for how the household functioned.

Mudroom

The mudroom became one area where balancing priorities was tricky. Part of the space was sacrificed to fit a nearby half bathroom, but the final setup still worked well for everyday storage and organization.

There were also plans to eventually add lockers after living in the space awhile and figuring out what worked best. 

Pantry

A walk-in pantry was high on the priority list because keeping small appliances off the kitchen counters was important for maintaining a cleaner look.

Even a modest pantry can completely improve how a kitchen functions.

Bathrooms

Bathroom layouts were designed with privacy and functionality in mind. The primary bathroom included a freestanding tub, connected closet access, and a separate water closet for the toilet.

The kids' bathroom also kept the sink area separate so multiple people could use the space at the same time without getting in each other's way.

Planning Bedrooms and Furniture Layouts

Bedrooms may seem straightforward, but furniture placement matters more than people realize during the design process.

Before finalizing room sizes, it helps to think about bed sizes, dressers, benches, and overall furniture flow. Even rough furniture mockups can help avoid awkward spacing later.

Sometimes a room may look large on a blueprint but feel cramped once furniture is added.

Primary Bedroom

One priority was keeping the primary bedroom separate from the noisier areas of the home.

Having nothing directly above the bedroom also helped reduce noise from upstairs at night.

After narrowing down ideas and priorities, it is finally time to sit down with the professionals.

This particular planning process took months to finalize, and small adjustments were still happening after construction had already started. That part may not make builders especially happy, but it is pretty common once people start to see the spaces come to life.

This bedroom makeover was all for a little boy who had been waiting forever for his superhero room, and the chalkboard wall felt like the perfect feature to make the space feel extra fun.

The amount of chalkboard paint needed will depend on the size of the wall you plan to cover.

A standard gallon of paint usually covers around 350 to 400 square feet with one coat.

Before the Chalkboard Wall

One of the best things about this house was the huge upstairs bedrooms. Even with a king-size bed in the room, there was still plenty of open floor space for the kids to play.

For this project, the chalkboard wall was painted on the short wall directly behind the bed. The only slightly annoying part was the rounded corner where the wall met the ceiling. It was not a clean straight edge, which made taping everything off a little tricky.

Using FrogTape Advanced made a huge difference in achieving crisp paint lines around those awkward corners. Sometimes the right tape really does save a project from becoming frustrating.

Preparing the Wall

Before painting, the wall needs to be clean and free of dust or dirt. If the wall has rough spots or texture, lightly going over it with sandpaper helps create a smoother surface for the chalkboard paint.

Once the wall is prepped, apply painter's tape around the area you plan to paint. Taking a little extra time here really helps later when it is time to remove the tape.

One little trick that helps a lot is running a damp cloth or paper towel along the edges of the tape after it is applied.

This helps seal the tape to the wall so paint does not sneak underneath and ruin those clean lines.

Painting the Chalkboard Wall

Start by using a paintbrush around the edges and corners where the roller cannot easily reach. Then use a roller to fill in the rest of the wall with chalkboard paint.

Depending on the color underneath and the paint brand you use, you may need a second coat for full coverage. Let the first coat dry completely before deciding if another coat is needed.

Once the paint is dry to the touch, slowly peel the tape away from the wall in one smooth motion.

Pulling it off too quickly can sometimes pull fresh paint with it, and nobody wants to fix that afterward.

Conditioning the Chalkboard Wall

After painting, the hardest part is waiting. The chalkboard paint needs a few days to fully cure before it is ready to use with chalk.

Before anyone starts drawing all over the wall, the surface needs to be conditioned first. This sounds fancy, but it is actually really simple. Rub the side of a piece of chalk over the entire wall and then wipe it clean with a dry cloth or paper towel.

This step helps prevent permanent ghost lines from appearing after erasing drawings. It only takes a minute and makes a big difference.

A Fun Wall That Actually Gets Used

One of the best things about a chalkboard wall is that it actually becomes part of everyday life. It is not just something pretty hanging on the wall that nobody touches.

This same technique works in bedrooms, playrooms, kitchens, offices, or anywhere that could use a little creative space.

Tips for Making Root Beer Pancakes

Cricut Design Space

Begin by uploading the SVG file into Cricut Design Space and placing the design onto your canvas.

The SVG is already sized to create a 4-inch coaster, but you can resize it larger or smaller as needed.

Since the design only includes one citrus slice, you can duplicate the image as many times as needed to create a full set of coasters.

If you want to create different citrus styles, change the colors directly in Design Space before cutting. Making a mix of lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit coasters creates a really fun and colorful set.

Once your design is ready, click Make to continue to the cutting screen. The mat preview screen lets you double-check placement before cutting your felt.

On the material settings screen, choose felt as your material setting. Install the rotary blade into your Cricut Maker before loading the mat.

Place the felt onto the FabricGrip mat and smooth it down firmly so the material stays in place while cutting.

After cutting is finished, carefully peel the felt pieces from the mat to help prevent stretching or warping.

Coaster Pieces

Each coaster requires one white felt circle, one larger colored circle, and seven colored triangle pieces.

Originally, I designed the coaster with eight triangle sections, but once I started assembling them, the design looked a little crowded.

After testing both versions, I decided that seven pieces gave the coaster a cleaner, more balanced look.

Some photos may still show eight sections from the earlier version.

There are two different ways to assemble these citrus coasters. You can either glue the felt pieces into place or add hand stitches around each section.

The glued version is definitely faster and works great if you want a quick afternoon project.

The stitched version takes a little more time, but I personally love the extra texture it adds to the finished coaster.

Assembling the Felt Coasters

Before adding glue, arrange the felt triangles inside the white circle until you are happy with the placement.

This makes it easier to adjust spacing before anything is attached permanently.

If you are using only glue, apply adhesive around the outer edges and center of each triangle piece. Press the pieces firmly into place and allow the glue to dry fully.

If you plan to stitch the coaster pieces, use much less glue during assembly. A tiny dot of glue in the center of each felt piece is enough to keep everything from shifting while stitching.

Too much glue near the edges can make stitching difficult because the needle will not slide through the felt as easily.

Keeping the edges clear gives you room to sew comfortably around each section.

For the stitched version, thread your needle with three strands of embroidery floss and use a simple in-and-out stitch around each triangle section.

The stitches add such a cute, handmade touch to the finished coaster.

Once the top citrus layer is complete, flip the white circle over and apply glue in a spiral pattern around the back edges.

Center it on top of the larger colored felt circle and press everything together firmly.

After the glue dries, your coaster is finished and ready to use.

Prepare the Pages

Start by cutting several sheets of 8.5 x 11-inch cardstock into quarters. This creates pages that measure 4.25 x 5.5 inches, which is the perfect size for little hands to carry around the parks.

I included around 15 pages in each autograph book, so there would be plenty of room for autographs and notes from the trip.

You can always add more pages if you plan on meeting a lot of characters during your visit to the Magic Kingdom.

For the printable activity pages, I searched online for free Disney-themed printables that matched our vacation plans. I combined all the files into a single PDF before printing.

When printing the pages, I changed the printer layout settings to print four pages per sheet.

My home printer settings may look different from yours, but most printers have a similar option in the print menu.

After printing, I trimmed all of the pages apart using a paper trimmer to keep the edges clean and even.

Add Personalized Activity Pages

I wanted the books to feel a little more personal, so I created a few simple journal-style pages for the kids.

Some pages asked about their favorite rides, favorite snacks, and what they were most excited to see during the trip.

These extra pages turned the autograph books into part scrapbook and part travel journal.

It was a fun way to save memories from the vacation beyond just collecting signatures.

Create the Front and Back Cover

To make sturdy covers, cut two pieces of chipboard measuring 4.5 x 5.75 inches. Cover both sides of the paper with patterned paper using double-sided adhesive.

For the front cover, I cut each child's name from cardstock using my Cricut machine. I added Disney stickers and personalized details based on each child's favorite character.

Each cover looked completely different, which made the books feel even more special. One child wanted a bright, colorful cover with Mickey Mouse, while another wanted princess-themed decorations.

Do not forget to decorate the back cover too. Adding a few extra stickers or patterned paper scraps helps tie the whole book together.

Bind the Autograph Books

Once all of the pages and covers were finished, I used the Cinch binding tool with wire binding to assemble the books.

The binding process went surprisingly quickly, and the finished books felt sturdy enough to survive a busy vacation at Disneyland or Magic Kingdom.

Our bathroom remodel has been finished for a few weeks now, and I have completely changed my mind about how important bathrooms are.

I used to think they were more of a practical space than anything exciting, but having a bathroom that feels finished and organized honestly makes getting ready every morning so much nicer.

Throughout this remodel, I shared projects like framing our bathroom mirror and decorating on a budget, but today I wanted to walk through how we handled the bathroom vanity installation.

We chose a freestanding vanity for this remodel, and it completely changed the look and feel of the room.

The time can vary depending on your bathroom setup, flooring repairs, plumbing adjustments, and whether you need to patch or paint the walls first.

Choosing the Right Freestanding Vanity

Before starting installation, it helps to think through a few important details about your space.

Freestanding vanities are popular because they add flexibility and usually make a bathroom feel more open compared to built-in cabinets. The visible floor space underneath can make a smaller bathroom appear larger, while still giving you plenty of storage.

We chose a gray bathroom vanity from Wayfair, and I still love it. The drawers glide smoothly, the finish feels durable, and it gives the bathroom a much more polished look.

When choosing a freestanding vanity, make sure you check the measurements carefully, especially around plumbing, electrical outlets, and flooring. Some vanities sit flush against the wall, while others have open backs or different leg styles that may affect installation.

How to Install a Freestanding Vanity

Turn Off the Water Supply

Before removing anything, turn off the water supply under the sink.

This step sounds obvious, but it is definitely one you do not want to skip. The last thing you want during a bathroom remodel is water spraying everywhere while disconnecting plumbing lines or the faucet.

Once the water is off, disconnect the plumbing underneath the sink and remove the faucet connections if needed.

Remove the Old Vanity

Removing the old vanity usually happens in sections.

We started by removing the vanity top after disconnecting the sink and plumbing beneath it. Since we were not planning to reuse our old vanities, we were not too worried about damaging them during removal. If you want to save yours to sell or repurpose, you will probably want to work more carefully.

Depending on the size and placement of your mirror, you may also need to remove it during this step.

Once everything was out, we found a surprising amount of dust and grime underneath. We cleaned the area thoroughly and sprayed everything down to make sure there were no moisture or mold issues hiding behind the old vanity.

One thing we discovered during the removal was a vent pipe rising through the floor. We had to frame around it and make sure it was secure before continuing the installation.

Check the Flooring and Wall Condition

Before installing the new freestanding vanity, take a close look at the flooring and walls behind the old cabinet.

Some bathroom vanities cover unfinished flooring or damaged drywall, so this is the best time to patch, paint, or repair anything before the new vanity is installed.

Because our previous vanity was oddly shaped and sloped backward, the flooring actually extended pretty far underneath it. Thankfully, the new vanity covered everything nicely. Depending on your layout, you may need to patch or extend flooring before installation.

Position and Level the Vanity

Once the space is prepped, move the freestanding vanity into place.

At this point, carefully measure and level everything before permanently attaching it. Even small differences in floor height can affect the stability of the vanity and cause doors or drawers to sit unevenly.

If needed, use shims underneath the legs until the vanity sits level.

Most freestanding vanity designs include a support apron along the back for wall attachment. Locate the wall studs and secure the vanity using the correct screw length for your specific model.

Install the Vanity Top and Sink

Before placing the vanity top, apply a bead of silicone caulk along the top edges of the vanity base where the countertop will sit.

You may need an extra set of hands during this part because vanity tops can get heavy and awkward to position.

Once the top is set, allow the silicone to cure according to the instructions.

If the vanity sits against a wall, apply another bead of caulk where the countertop meets the wall. This helps prevent water from dripping behind the vanity near the sink or shower area.

Reconnect the Plumbing

Now comes the part nobody really looks forward to: reconnecting the plumbing.

Every bathroom setup is a little different, so your sink drain and faucet connections may not look exactly like ours. Take your time reconnecting everything and check carefully for leaks once the water supply is turned back on.

If plumbing work makes you uncomfortable, this is definitely one of those projects where hiring a professional can save a lot of frustration.

Final Thoughts

Once everything was finished, the bathroom felt completely different. The freestanding vanity added so much character while still giving us the storage we needed.

It made the room feel brighter, more open, and honestly, much more enjoyable to use every day.

Before You Start

This cleaning mixture works really well for cutting through grease, cooked-on grime, and buildup, but you definitely do not want any leftover cleaner hanging around where your food comes into contact with the grill.

If your grill has cast-iron grates, avoid soaking them for too long, as excess moisture can encourage rust. Stainless steel grates hold up a little better during soaking.

Soak the Grill Grates

Start by filling your bucket with water, then add the Tide Oxi according to the package directions.

Once the mixture is ready, remove the grill grates and place them into the bucket to soak. Let them sit for about five minutes while the cleaner loosens the grease and cooked-on buildup.

While the grates soak, use some of the cleaning mixture to wipe down the rest of the grill. It works well for cleaning the outside surfaces, side shelves, and the lid, where grease and grime tend to build up during grilling season.

Scrub Away the Gunk

After the grill grates have soaked, use a grill brush to scrub away the loosened grime while the grates are still in the bucket.

Even with light scrubbing, you will notice a huge difference right away. Once the heavy buildup starts coming loose, rinse the grates with a hose so you can clearly see any remaining dirty spots that still need attention.

For stubborn areas the brush cannot quite reach, grab an old rag or paper towel and scrub those sections by hand.

The best part is that most of the gunk wipes away much more easily after soaking.

Rinse Thoroughly

Once everything looks clean, rinse the grill grates really well with water.

This step matters because you want all the cleaner residue completely removed before cooking again. After rinsing, let the grates dry fully before placing them back into the grill.

To help prevent rust, especially on cast-iron grates, lightly dry them with a clean cloth after rinsing.

I could not believe the difference after cleaning our grill this way. Our grill started out greasy and dirty, covered in cooked-on grime.

And ended up looking almost brand new again.

Remove Burnt-On Messes

Start by using the cooktop scraper to carefully remove large burnt pieces of food and heavy buildup.

Hold the scraper at a slight angle and gently slide it across the glass cooktop. Let the blade do the work rather than using excessive force.

Once the larger pieces are removed, wipe away the loose crumbs and residue with paper towels or a dry cloth.

Apply the Cleaning Mixture

Next, pour hot tap water over the stained areas of the cooktop. The heat helps soften grease and cooked-on spills.

I used my homemade laundry detergent, and it worked surprisingly well. You can also make a simple baking soda paste by mixing baking soda with a little water until it forms a spreadable consistency.

Sprinkle or spread the cleaner over the burners and let it sit for a few minutes to loosen the mess.

After it has had time to work, use a sponge or nonabrasive cleaning pad to gently scrub the surface.

You do not need to wipe it away yet.

Scrape and Shine

Once everything has softened, grab the cooktop scraper again and gently go over the surface. This step removes any remaining residue, leaving the stove looking much cleaner.

If you run into stubborn spots, apply a little more cleaner and repeat the process instead of scrubbing aggressively.

After the cooktop looks clean, wipe everything down thoroughly with a damp cloth.

To finish, spray the surface with glass cleaner or cooktop cleaner and buff it dry with a clean cloth or paper towel. This helps remove streaks and restores the stove's glossy shine.

Try to wipe up spills quickly whenever possible because sugary messes and grease become much harder to remove once they cook onto the surface.

Instructions

Start by cutting your burlap into a rectangle shape.

The exact size isn't important, so you can easily adjust it based on who will use the tote.

One helpful trick when cutting burlap is to pull out a single fiber. This leaves behind a visible line you can follow with your scissors, making it much easier to get a straight cut.

Next, find two sticks that are slightly wider than the burlap piece. These sticks help hold the tote open and give it structure while carrying flowers.

To attach the sticks, thread twine through the burlap near the top edge.

A crochet hook makes this easier because you can pull the twine right through the fibers.

If you do not have one, a pencil works well for creating a small opening first.

Wrap one end of the twine around the stick several times to hold it securely in place.

On the opposite side, wrap the twine twice and tie it into a bow.

Repeat this process in the center and on the other end of the burlap so the stick stays secure across the entire width. T

Then repeat everything on the second side with the other stick.

Once both sticks are attached, your flower tote is ready to use.

The burlap naturally folds around the flowers, helping hold the stems together while still keeping everything lightweight and easy to carry.

This project is really more than just a tote. It turns into one of those simple outdoor activities kids remember.

Cricut Design Space

Start by uploading the SVG into Cricut Design Space and adding it to your canvas.

The design is already sized to fit the 80mm fillable star ornaments perfectly, so there is no need to resize anything.

Click "Make" and review the mat preview screen. If everything looks good, continue to the material settings and select cardstock.

Whenever I cut cardstock, I like to choose the "More Pressure" option. It helps create cleaner cuts and keeps the edges from looking fuzzy.

Place your cardstock onto a StandardGrip mat, load it into the machine, and press the blinking start button to begin cutting.

Continue cutting each cardstock color until all of the pieces are finished.

Assemble the Patriotic Party Favors

I cut two versions of the design just to show that these can be assembled facing either direction. Both ways look cute, so just go with the one you like best.

The clear star domes are made from fillable star-shaped ornaments that split into two halves. One ornament makes two patriotic party favors.

To help with placement later, place the large blue star over the white background piece and lightly trace the star's inner points with a pencil.

These little guide marks make it much easier to line everything up once the ornament is filled.

Next, glue the red and blue cardstock stripes onto the white background piece.

I used liquid glue and applied small dots instead of large lines so the glue would not seep through the cutout stars.

Once the paper layers are assembled, it is time to fill the ornament halves with candy.

I used Nerds Gummy Clusters because the colors fit the patriotic theme perfectly, but M&M's or other small candies work great, too.

The biggest thing to keep in mind is size. Since the domes are not very deep, smaller candies work best and help the ornament sit flat against the paper.

If you are using unwrapped candy and plan to share it with guests, wearing food-safe gloves is a good idea.

After filling the domes, place the paper backing, face down, on the ornament, and gently flip it over to check the fit.

If the dome does not sit flat, remove a little candy until it does.

Line up the points of the ornament with the pencil marks you traced earlier.

Once everything is centered, run hot glue around the edges of the dome to attach it to the backing and seal the candy inside.

Add the Decorative Layers

Now it is time to add dimension to the front.

Cut small pieces of foam tape and place them around the back of the large blue star outline.

The foam tape lifts the layer slightly and helps hide the hot-glue line around the dome.

Peel away the backing and carefully center the blue star over the ornament. Press the edges down firmly.

For the final layer, apply liquid glue to the thin red star outline and place it on top of the blue layer.

Once the glue dries, the patriotic party favors are ready to be gifted.

How to Open the Candy Dome

On the back of the favor, a perforated section is built into the design.

To open it, simply press your finger into the cutout area and peel it back to access the candy inside.

Final Thoughts

These patriotic party favors are such a fun way to dress up July party decorations while giving guests a little treat to take home.

They work great for Memorial Day, Fourth of July celebrations, Veterans Day events, backyard barbecues, school parties, and even bulk favors for a large event or parade.

These outdoor table plans came from my dream of having a sturdy backyard table that could actually survive family life.

We love eating outside, and somehow the messes, noise, and kids running circles around the yard feel way less stressful out on the patio.

After spotting a chunky X-brace table at Pottery Barn, I teamed up with Rogue Engineer to create a version with the exact top design I wanted and enough durability to handle my kids treating it like playground equipment.

Even though these outdoor table plans look a little advanced at first glance, this build is surprisingly doable if you've tackled a few beginner DIY projects before.

Instructions

Step 1: Cut Lap Joints

The build starts with the X-brace legs. The first step is to cut the lap joints according to the measurements below.

Start by cutting the two outer edges, then work through the center cuts. This helps keep the joint snug, preventing it from accidentally cutting too wide.

The cuts do not need to look perfect because the middle section will be cleaned out with a chisel afterward.

Step 2: Assemble Legs

Once the lap joints are ready, fit the two boards together to form the X shape.

Attach the pieces with wood glue and screws, making sure the lap joints face the correct direction before securing everything permanently.

Because the legs are cut at a 45-degree angle, the bottom edges can become sharp and prone to chipping.

Trim off the very tip with a circular saw...see below (note: legs are upside down in the picture, so that is the part that actually sits on the ground). Smooth the edges with a sander and sandpaper.

This small step helps the legs hold up better over time and gives the finished table a cleaner look.

Repeat for the legs on the opposite side of the table.

Step 3: Assemble Frame for Top

After the legs are finished, move on to the table top frame.

Most of the frame assembly uses pocket holes, so the Kreg Jig gets a workout.

Assemble the frame using 2 ½-inch pocket-hole screws, checking along the way to ensure everything stays square.

Step 4: Add Trim to Frame

Next comes the trim around the outside edge.

Since the herringbone pattern sits recessed inside the frame, you need to leave a ¾-inch space for the boards that will create the design.

The easiest way to do this is by placing scrap boards underneath while attaching the trim pieces.

Working on a flat, level surface helps keep everything evenly aligned.

Step 5: Assemble Table

Once the frame is complete, it is time to assemble the table base.

Attach the legs to the table top frame using wood glue and screws.

I actually found it easier to attach the large 4x4 support beam to each leg assembly first before attaching everything to the frame.

It helped me center everything evenly and made the assembly process smoother.

Step 6: Herringbone Pattern

The herringbone table top is definitely the most time-consuming part of the build, but it is also what makes this outdoor dining table stand out.

The process itself is not difficult, but it does require patience.

I highly recommend measuring and cutting each board individually rather than batch-cutting pieces in advance.

Lumber sizes can vary slightly, and even tiny differences can throw the pattern off.

As I worked, I cut each piece, dry-fitted it into place, and then attached it to the board one board at a time using wood glue and my finish nailer.

Going slowly here really pays off in the finished look.

Step up 7: Sand and Stain

After all the boards are attached, the final step is sanding the entire table.

Spend extra time smoothing the table top so it feels nice and even.

Once everything is sanded, apply your finish.

I used Thompson's WaterSeal stain and sealer in Moroccan Brown because I liked that it combined color and protection in one coat.

Plus, I was more than ready to see the finished table rather than wait through multiple finishing stages. 😄

Final Thoughts

The finished table turned out even better than I had pictured.

The chunky legs make it feel sturdy and substantial, while the herringbone top adds so much character.

It has held up beautifully for outdoor meals, family gatherings, and everyday life with kids.

Once the paint has started to set, lightly mist the glass again with the water mixture.

You'll start to see small spots forming, which is exactly what gives faux mercury glass its texture.

Apply another light coat of spray paint over the top.

Let it dry for a couple of minutes, then gently dab the surface with paper towels.

This step removes a bit of the paint and softens the finish, making it look more like real mercury glass.

Repeat this process a few times until you like the look.

Most of my pieces took about three to four rounds, but you can stop earlier for a lighter finish or keep going for a more aged effect.

On larger vases, the effect really stands out, giving the glass more depth. It's one of those crafts where the results look much more complicated than the process actually is.

At the same time, paint the small wood pieces yellow, making sure to cover all sides and edges.

Place two strips of tape about an inch apart to create a clean line.

Paint the exposed section with yellow paint, then let it dry fully before removing the tape.

Next, add your lettering to the small wood blocks.

You can use alphabet stamps, vinyl, or stickers to spell out the word "keys."
