DIY Crib Skirt Tutorial

Measure Your Crib

Start by setting your crib mattress at the highest level (this is where most newborn setups begin).

You'll need to measure:

• From the crib mattress platform down to the floor
• Across the length and width of the platform

To figure out the amount of fabric you need:

• Take the height (platform to floor) and double it
• Add that to the length of the crib

This gives you enough fabric to drape nicely and still have some fullness.

I used a wider piece of cotton fabric, so it covered the front panel in one section without needing extra seams.

Cut the Fabric

For the main piece:

• Cut one large section to cover the front panel

Then for the side panels:

• Measure each side
• Cut additional strips of fabric to fit

I added a few extra inches to my side panels so I could gently bunch the fabric for a soft, relaxed look. No need for perfect pleats-just adjust it until it looks good to you.

If you want cleaner edges, you can fold them under or finish them, but I left mine as-is for a more natural look.

Place the Fabric

Lay the main piece of fabric across the crib platform so it hangs evenly over the front.

Then add the side panels the same way, overlapping slightly at the corners if needed.

Once everything is in place, set the crib mattress on top. The weight of the mattress holds everything securely, so there's no need for pins or even velcro.

Adjust and Tuck

After placing the mattress:

• Smooth out the fabric
• Tuck any extra edges underneath
• Adjust the fullness until you like how it looks

Because this adjustable crib skirt is easy to reposition, it's especially helpful as you lower the crib mattress over time.

Fabric Tips

I'm not exactly sure how many yards of fabric I used, but I would estimate around 4-5 yards, depending on your crib size and how full you want the skirt.

A few quick tips before you purchase:

• Choose a cotton or lightweight fabric that drapes nicely
• Measure your crib first

Try to get your fabric in one continuous cut

How to Make Wood Letter Decorations

Measure

Before cutting, take a quick measurement of the front of your shirt.

This helps make sure the design fits the size you're working with-especially important for kids' shirts.

For reference, I used a toddler-size 18-24 months shirt, and a 6½-inch-wide design fit really well without looking too big or too small.

Cricut Design Space

For this project, I used Cricut Design Space. If you're using another program, the steps will be similar.

Upload the SVG into Cricut Design Space and add it to your Canvas.

The design is already layered, so there's no need to separate anything.

I resized the design to 6 ½ inches wide and made no further changes.

Once everything looked good, I clicked Make.

On the mat preview screen, click Mirror and double-check that both mats are mirrored.

This step matters anytime you're cutting iron-on so your design reads correctly once it's pressed.

Click Next, then select your material. I used Value Iron-On (a standard HTV), which works great for projects like this.

Place the vinyl on the mat shiny side down, then load the mat into your machine and start the cut.

Repeat the process for the gray layer.

Weed the Design

Once everything is cut, it's time to weed out the design.

Start in a corner and slowly pull away the extra vinyl. Take your time here, especially around small details like buttons or badge shapes.

Don't forget to remove the small inner pieces-those are easy to miss.

When you're done, flip the design over and give it a quick check to make sure everything looks clean and ready to press.

Apply the Iron-On

I used a Cricut EasyPress, but any heat press will work.

Before pressing, check your settings using the Cricut Heat Guide so you get the right temperature and time for your materials.

Just select your heat press, transfer material, and base material, and it gives you everything you need.

I preheated my press to 315°F and set the timer for 30 seconds.

While the press heated up, I prepped my shirt by running a lint roller over the front to remove any fuzz or hair.

This design is easy to center-just line it up from the middle of the collar down to the tip of the tie

Place the main (gray) layer first.

Press the design for 30 seconds, let it cool (this uses a cool peel), and peel away the liner once it's cool to the touch.

Place the gold badge on top, cover the gray layer with its liner to protect it, and press again using the same settings. Let it cool, then peel off both liners.

This turned out so cute and is such a fun alternative to a full costume.

It's comfortable for kids, easy to make, and perfect for Halloween or everyday dress-up. Plus, it's something they can wear more than once, which is always a win.

I love how this shirt turned out. I think it is so cute!

Braid the Fabric Strips

Start by choosing your fabric.

Using scraps doesn't mean everything has to match perfectly.

Mixing patterns and colors can actually make the finished braided fabric necklace look even more interesting.

Instead of cutting your fabric into strips, tear it. This gives the edges a softer, slightly frayed look that works really well for this project.

Here's how:

• Find the longest side of your fabric
• Make a small snip about 1 inch in
• Tear the fabric down the length to create strips

Long strips work best, but if yours are shorter, you can tie them together to extend the length.

Take three strips of fabric and braid them together to create one rope.

Using a binder clip to hold one end in place makes this much easier, especially if you're working on your own.

Make the braid as long as you'd like your necklace to be.

For this braided fabric necklace, I made three separate braided ropes, each one slightly longer than the last. I increased each length by about two inches to create a layered look.

If you want more contrast between the layers, you can increase the length difference.

Assemble the Necklace

Once your braided strips are ready, it's time to turn them into a necklace.

• Line up the ends of the three braided ropes
• Use hot glue to secure them together on one end
• Repeat on the other end

Next, bring both ends together to form the necklace shape and glue them together.

It might not look perfect at this stage, and that's okay-this part will be covered.

Cut a small rectangle from a coordinating piece of fabric.

To keep the edges from fraying too much:

• Fold the edges slightly inward
• Add a small amount of glue to hold the folds in place

Wrap this strip around the glued seam and secure it with hot glue.

This step gives your fabric necklace a cleaner, finished look.

Add A Fabric Flower (optional)

The necklace can be finished at this point, but adding a flower gives it a little extra detail and helps hide the seam even more.

Cut flower shapes from fabric scraps. You can use a Big Shot or cut them by hand.

Layer the shapes, largest on the bottom and smallest on top

Add a small dot of hot glue between each layer

Finish the center with a half pearl embellishment.

Glue the finished flower right over the fabric strip covering the seam.

This pulls everything together and gives your braided fabric necklace a polished look.

Final Thoughts

This braided fabric necklace is one of those projects that look more detailed than they actually are.

Once you get the hang of braiding the strips, the rest comes together quickly. It's a great project for beginners and an easy way to turn fabric scraps into something fun and wearable.

You can keep it simple or add extra details depending on your style-and either way, you'll end up with a one-of-a-kind piece.

How to Make Paper Flowers

This paper flower is made by layering small loops of paper, giving it a full chrysanthemum look.

The yellow strips are 3 ½ x ½ inches, the outer pink strips are 3 inches long, and the inner pink strips are 2 ½ inches long.

Fold each strip in half and glue the ends together to make a loop.

Cut a paper circle about 1 ½ inches wide for the flower base.

Glue the first layer of loops around the edge of the circle.

Add the next layers by gluing the loops in the spaces between the previous layer.

Keep layering until the flower looks full. This flower used two yellow layers, two pink layers, and a few extra pink loops to fill small gaps.

Make the center by cutting a 1 ½ inch paper circle into a spiral, rolling it tightly, and gluing it in the middle.

You can also use a button, rhinestone, or another embellishment for the center.

Try making your paper flowers in a mix of sizes to add even more personality to your projects.

Using a liquid measuring cup, measure out 1 cup of the melted coconut oil.

In a mixing bowl, add:

• Both containers of Vitamin E cream
• the melted coconut oil
• the baby lotion

Using a hand mixer, blend everything until smooth and creamy.

It should look like a fluffy lotion with an even texture. This only takes a couple of minutes.

Scoop the finished lotion into a clean jar or divide it into smaller containers for gifts.

Because coconut oil can soften or melt depending on the room temperature, the consistency may change slightly.

Final Thoughts

After using this lotion for a week, I can say it works really well for dry skin. It feels just as moisturizing as my previous version and has a similar consistency.

The Paper Cutter I Use

I use the Fiskars SureCut Deluxe Paper Cutter, and it's one I've reached for over and over again.

Here's what makes it so helpful:

• A measurement grid and ruler for lining things up
• A thin wire guide that shows exactly where the blade will cut
• A cutting area large enough for standard paper and cardstock

That wire guide is a small detail, but it makes a big difference. It lets you see exactly where your cut will land before you even touch the blade.

That small wire is hard to see, but if you look carefully, you can find it!

Also, don't stress too much about how you hold it. There's technically a "right" direction based on the ruler, but most people just use paper cutters in whatever way feels natural.

If that means turning it around or using your non-dominant hand to hold the paper, that's totally fine.

Technically, I use the trimmer upside down, but it is what feels most natural to me.

How to Get Straight Cuts Every Time

Let's walk through a simple way to cut paper cleanly and evenly.

Start with a basic sheet, like 8.5" x 11" cardstock.

1. Open the cutter

Lift the arm and slide your paper underneath.

2. Line up your measurement

Use the ruler or measurement grid to decide where you want to cut.

For example, cutting a sheet in half lengthwise:

• 11 ÷ 2 = 5.5 inches

Slide your paper until it aligns with the 5.5-inch mark.

3. Anchor the paper (this is the key step)

Always push your paper firmly against either the top or bottom edge.

This keeps it from shifting while you cut. If it's just sitting in the middle, it can move and throw off your line.

4. Make the cut

Lower the arm to hold everything in place and then:

• Hold the paper steady
• Slide the blade in one smooth motion

You should end up with a clean, straight edge.

A Simple Tip That Makes a Big Difference

When you move the blade, try to cut toward the edge the paper it is pressed against.

• Paper against the bottom → pull the blade down
• Paper against the top → push the blade up

It sounds small, but it helps keep everything from shifting while you cut.

The Most Common Mistake

The biggest issue is not anchoring in the paper.

If your paper isn't pressed against an edge, it can slide just enough to give you a crooked cut.

A quick fix: always line it up, then push it firmly against the top or bottom before cutting.

Cutting Printed Designs

If you've ever tried cutting bookmarks, tags, or printables, you know measurements don't always match the design perfectly.

This is where the wire guide really helps.

Here's what to do:

• Move the blade to the top
• Slide your paper into place
• Use the wire guide to line up exactly where you want to cut
• Once it looks right, make your cut

This makes it much easier to trim right along your design, rather than leaving extra white space.

How Many Sheets Can You Cut at Once?

The number of sheets you can cut depends on:

• Your specific paper cutter
• The sharpness of the blades
• The thickness of your paper

For lighter cardstock (like 60 lb), most paper cutters can handle 2 sheets at once.

If you feel too much resistance or the edges look rough, go back to one sheet. It's better to take an extra second than ruin your cut.

Extra Tips That Help

• Use a piece of scrap paper to test your measurement before cutting your final piece
• Replace blades when cuts start looking rough instead of clean
• Keep your paper flat against the measurement grid for the most accurate results

Final Thoughts

Once you get the hang of it, paper cutters are one of those tools you'll use all the time.

The biggest things to remember:

• Line your paper up using the ruler or grid
• Always anchor it against an edge
• Use the wire guide for detailed cuts
• Keep your blades sharp

After that, you'll get clean, straight cuts every time without even thinking about it.

No curling wand? You can absolutely use a curling iron or even a flat iron.

A curling wand makes it a little easier to get that relaxed shape, but the technique is what really matters. The same method works with a curling iron, and a flat iron can also create beach waves once you get the hang of twisting the hair as you glide.

Use whatever tool you're most comfortable with.

How to Get Beach Waves

The goal here is soft, undone waves-not perfect curls.

Step 1: Start with Dry Hair

Make sure your hair is completely dry before you begin. This helps the curl hold better and keeps the style from falling flat.

Lightly brush through your hair to remove any tangles.

Step 2: Add Heat Protection

Before using any hot tools, apply a heat protection product. This step is easy to skip, but it really helps protect your hair from damage.

Step 3: Prep the Hair

Apply a small amount of leave-in product or detangler to smooth the hair and make it easier to work with.

Step 4: Start Curling

Take small sections of hair (about 1 inch wide).

Wrap the hair around your curling wand or curling iron, leaving the ends out. Leaving the ends straight gives a more natural, beachy look instead of a polished curl.

Step 5: Alternate Directions

As you move through your hair, alternate the direction of each curl.

Continue curling section by section until you reach the last section.

For the front pieces, it usually looks best to curl away from the face. This helps open everything up and keeps the style from feeling too heavy around the face.

Once everything is curled, let the hair cool for a minute.

Cricut Design Space

I'm using Cricut Design Space for this project. If you're using another cutting program, your screens may look a little different, but the overall process is the same.

The finished card fits an extra A6 envelope and measures about 4.5 x 6.25 inches when folded.

Start by uploading the SVG file into Cricut Design Space and adding it to your canvas.

When the design loads, all lines will appear as cut lines.

Two of those lines actually need to be changed to score lines so the card folds properly.

Because the card base is black, those lines can be a little hard to see on the canvas. The easiest way to find them is in the Layers panel.

Look for the two vertical lines, select them, and change them from Cut to Score. Then attach them to the card base so the Cricut machine knows exactly where to score.

Once everything is ready, click Make.

Check the mat preview screen to ensure the pieces look correct, then proceed to the material settings.

Select Medium Cardstock as your material. Cricut Design Space will prompt you when to load the scoring wheel or scoring stylus before cutting.

Let the Cricut machine cut all of the pieces from your cardstock.

Card Assembly

Once everything is cut, you'll have several cardstock pieces ready to assemble.

Start by folding the card base along the score lines. A bone folder helps create clean, crisp folds.

The shaped side of the card becomes the front, and the straight edge of the triangle piece forms the top left flap.

Apply glue along the triangle flap and attach it to the inside of the card.

Next, glue the white square panel to the card's inside center. This covers the glued flap and creates a clean space for writing a message.

Assemble the Tuxedo

Now move on to the tuxedo pieces.

Before gluing anything down, lay the pieces out on your table to see how they fit together. This helps avoid mistakes.

The bottom of the shirt should line up with the points of the jacket flaps.

Once everything looks right, glue the pieces onto the front card flap, aligning them with the top and left edges.

For the bow tie, gently fold the sides upward to give it a little dimension. Add a small dot of glue in the center and attach it to the shirt.

The top of the bow tie should sit just below the shirt collar.

Add the Wedding Dress

Open the card flat with the dress flap on the right side.

Apply glue to the back of the white wedding dress, then place it on the card, lining it up with the bottom and right edges.

This creates the layered bride-and-groom design when the card closes.

To close the card, fold the tuxedo flap first, then bring the dress side over the top.

Final Thoughts

I love how this card turned out. It's simple, but it still feels really special for a wedding or anniversary.

If you want to add a little extra detail, you could:

• Emboss the dress to give it a lace texture
• Add small paper flowers
• Use patterned cardstock that matches the wedding invitation

Today I'm sharing my cottage kitchen reveal, and it's still one of my favorite rooms I've ever worked on.

When we first moved into that house, I knew the kitchen would be the first big project on my list.

One of the biggest changes was turning the flat cabinet doors into shaker-style cabinetry.

Looking back at the before photos, it's hard to believe how much this little cottage-style kitchen has transformed.

Kitchen Reveal

Before we get into the details, here's a reminder of what the kitchen looked like before the makeover.

It had good bones, but it needed a lot of updates to get the cozy cottage kitchen feel I had in mind.

Countertops

It's hard to pick a favorite part of the kitchen, but the butcher block countertops are definitely near the top of the list.

They were actually one of the first decisions I made when planning the kitchen design. I love the warmth and texture they add, especially in a white kitchen.

White cabinets were always part of the plan, too. Since this is a small cottage kitchen, I wanted the space to feel as bright and open as possible.

The room already had a soffit above the cabinetry, which made the ceiling feel lower and the kitchen a little more closed in.

Trust me, I really wanted to rip that soffit out. But once we started looking at the budget, that idea disappeared pretty quickly.

Instead of fighting it, I decided to work with it. Now that everything is finished, I actually don't mind it at all. Maybe my grocery sign helps distract from it.

The kitchen light over the space came from Amazon and fit the style perfectly.

I almost didn't use subway tile for the backsplash because my husband wasn't a big fan at first.

I'm really glad I pushed for it, though, because now he loves it too.

Cupboards

One of the biggest challenges in this kitchen was the awkward cabinet sitting right next to the stove.

It throws off the symmetry of the cabinets, which bothered me at first.

I thought about removing it completely, but that would have quickly turned into replacing all of the cabinetry, and that definitely wasn't in the budget.

So once again, I decided to work with what I had.

The bigger problem was that the cabinet sits right next to the stove, which means splatters happen. White paint and spaghetti sauce are not a great combination.

While walking through the hardware store one day, I spotted these tiles that were meant for a backsplash.

By total coincidence, they were the perfect size to fit on the cabinet door.

It solved the splatter problem and added another layer of texture to the space.

Sometimes the best ideas come from wandering the aisles of the hardware store.

Kitchen Sink

The sink is another part of this cottage-style kitchen that I love.

I specifically wanted a white sink because… well, I clearly like white in a kitchen. When we brought it home, my kids looked at it and asked, "Mom, did you paint the sink white?"

Apparently, my love for all things white is a running joke in the family now. My husband teases me about it, and the kids have joined in, too.

Deep down, though, I'm pretty sure they like it just as much as I do.

Farhouse Kitchen Decor

I've always loved the look of open shelving in cottage kitchens and farmhouse-style kitchens.

The reality is, I don't own perfectly styled dishes, and my kitchen is not always spotless. So completely replacing upper cabinets with shelves wasn't going to work for me.

Instead, I added a couple of smaller shelves above my island counter. They add that cottage-style feeling without requiring the entire kitchen to stay picture-perfect all the time.

I even put together a tutorial showing how to build them.

Another small change was leaving the cabinet doors off the cabinets above the fridge.

There were a few reasons for that decision:

1. I never store anything up there because I can't reach it
2. It gives me a place to add seasonal kitchen decor
3. The hinges didn't actually fit

That last one probably should have been reason number one, but it worked out in the end. Now I love having that little display area.

And of course, every cozy cottage kitchen needs a chalkboard menu, right? I made one for this space and shared the tutorial as well.

Now, if I could just get better at writing neatly on a chalkboard. 😆

So there it is… my farmhouse-inspired cottage kitchen makeover.

Even though it's a small kitchen, it feels warm, bright, and functional.

The white cabinetry, butcher block counters, open shelves, and little vintage finds all came together to create a space that feels comfortable for our family and welcoming when guests stop by.

Have you ever been in the middle of a recipe and suddenly needed to double it… only to realize you can't remember how many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?

That happened to me more times than I'd like to admit. I kept grabbing my phone to check simple measurement conversions while cooking, which usually left my screen covered in messy fingers.

So I finally made a quick cooking measurement conversion chart with my Cricut machine and stuck it inside a cabinet door. Now the common kitchen measurements are right there whenever I need them.

It's one of those small kitchen helpers that ends up getting used all the time, especially if you cook from recipes that bounce between the metric system and standard measurements.

Use the Retro Kitchen Conversion SVG to create the chart with your Cricut machine.

Measure Your Space

Before cutting anything, decide where you want the cooking measurement chart to live.

I chose the inside of a cabinet door, so it's easy to see while I'm cooking, but hidden when the cabinet is closed.

Take a quick measurement of the space to determine how large to make the decal.

My cabinet door has quite a bit of room, so I sized the design as large as possible to make the numbers easy to read.

Cricut Design Space

I used Cricut Design Space for this project. If you're using another cutting program, your screen may look a little different, but the steps are similar.

Start by uploading the SVG file into Cricut Design Space.

Add the design to your canvas, then resize it based on the measurements you took earlier.

Once the size looks right, click Make.

On the mat preview screen, double-check that everything looks correct, then click Next.

Select adhesive vinyl as your material, load the mat into your Cricut machine, and start the cut.

Prepare the Vinyl Decal

After the Cricut finishes cutting, it's time to weed the design.

Use a weeding tool to remove the extra vinyl around the design. I like to start at one corner and slowly peel away the background.

Next, remove the small inner pieces from the letters and numbers in the chart.

Cut a piece of transfer tape that is slightly larger than your design.

Lay the transfer tape over the vinyl decal and use a scraper tool to press it down firmly.

Tip: If any small pieces stay behind, flip the design over and gently burnish the back. That usually helps them lift with the transfer tape.

Apply the Vinyl Decal

Before applying the decal, clean the surface well. I like using a little isopropyl alcohol because it removes grease and dries quickly.

Peel back a small section of the paper liner to position the decal where you want it.

If you want to be extra precise, you can use a level to make sure it's straight. I used the bottom of the letters as my guide since my transfer tape wasn't perfectly lined up.

Starting on one side, slowly pull the paper liner away while smoothing the vinyl onto the cabinet door with a scraper tool.

Work gradually so the decal sticks to the surface instead of staying on the liner.

Once the entire design is in place, go over it again with the scraper tool to help everything adhere.

Then carefully peel the transfer tape away, starting from one corner and pulling it straight back. Watch closely to make sure all parts of the decal stay on the cabinet, not on the tape.

And that's it!

Now you have a super handy cooking measurement chart right in your kitchen.

It's perfect for quick ingredient conversions when you're working with tablespoons, teaspoons, grams, or other recipe measurements.

The first step for this game is going shopping, which I must admit was my favorite part. Shopping for a sweet new grandbaby is never a chore!

I searched for 12 baby items priced between $1.98 and $19.98. Try to avoid duplicate prices, although a few items can have very similar prices to make the game a little more challenging for guests.

Think of items like:

• pacifiers
• baby socks
• diaper cream
• baby shampoo
• small toys
• teething rings

Be sure to keep your receipt since you'll use it when creating the game cards.

Create Game Cards in Canva

You can use my Canva template to make this part super simple.

Look at your receipt and update the price amounts on the template so they match your baby items.

Each item appears in four places on the card, so make sure all four prices match.

When the card is ready:

1. Click Share in the top right corner
2. Select Download
3. Choose PDF Print as the file type

Then print your cards and use a paper trimmer to cut them apart.

Now your game cards are ready for your baby shower guests!

Create Price Tags with Cricut

Open the Price is Right Tags in Cricut Design Space.

Click into each tag and change the prices to match your baby items.

Be sure each tag is attached so the Cricut cuts and writes correctly.

Once everything looks good:

1. Click Make
2. Select your material (usually medium cardstock)
3. Place cardstock on a StandardGrip mat
4. Load the mat into your machine

Cricut Design Space will prompt you to switch between the black and gold markers.

Once the tags are finished cutting and drawing, they are ready to place next to the baby items.

Game Play

Set up the game on a large table or counter where guests can easily see everything.

Arrange the baby items with a numbered circle next to each item. Mix up the numbers so they are not in price order.

Place a stack of cards and pens nearby so guests can write their names and make their guesses.

I placed a small basket near the display so guests could drop their cards in when finished instead of carrying them around during the party.

Later in the shower, gather everyone together and reveal the prices, starting with item 1 and ending with 12.

Guests keep track of how many prices they guessed correctly. The person with the most correct answers wins the prize.

Baby Shower Prize Ideas

For prizes, I kept things simple and fun. I used Bottle Pops from the Dollar Tree, which matched the theme perfectly.

Other fun prize ideas could include:

Instructions

Step 1: Print the Fabric Label

Print the Keep Calm and Carry Yarn design onto fabric using your home printer.

If you have not printed on fabric before, this tutorial will walk you through the process: How to Print on Fabric.

The printable file is designed for a full sheet of paper. If you want a smaller label, resize the design before printing.

Set the printed fabric aside while you assemble the bag pieces.

Step 2: Sew the Back Pocket

Take the back panel and the pocket piece.

1. Fold the top edge of each piece under ½ inch and press.
2. Stitch the folded edge to create a clean hem.

Place the pocket on top of the back panel with right sides facing out. Align the bottom and side edges.

Sew a basting stitch along the sides to hold the pocket in place while you assemble the bag.

Set this piece aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Front Panel

Fold the top edge of the front panel down ½ inch and sew a hem.

Next, attach the printed fabric label.

1. Apply fusible web to the back of the printed fabric.
2. Center the design on the front panel.
3. Fuse according to the manufacturer's instructions.
4. Stitch around the edge using a zigzag stitch to secure it.

This step gives the bag a fun, handmade look while keeping the fabric label's edges from fraying.

Step 4: Prepare the Side Panel

Take the long side panel piece and hem both short edges with a ½ inch seam allowance.

This long strip will wrap around the sides and bottom of the tote bag.

Step 5: Create the Crochet Hook Holder

Take the 5" x 7" piece that will hold your crochet hooks.

1. Fold the top and bottom edges under ½ inch.
2. Press and sew the hems.

Position this panel on the side panel piece where one side of the bag will be.

Sew vertical lines down the panel to create narrow pockets for crochet hooks, yarn needles, or stitch markers.

These small slots keep your tools organized so they do not disappear into the bottom of the bag.

Step 6: Sew the Bag Body

Now we assemble the tote.

Place the front panel and the long side panel right sides together.

The long strip wraps around one side, across the bottom, and up the other side of the bag.

Sew with a ⅜-inch seam allowance.

Once the front panel is attached, sew the back panel to the remaining edge of the side strip, again with right sides together.

You should now have the tote bag's shape. This will be the view of the inside.

Step 7: Finish the Seams

To strengthen the bag and keep the inside neat, we will flatten the seams.

On the right side of the bag, start with the two bottom seams and pinch them together.

Press and sew. Once you do the two bottom sides, then do the 4 side seams.

Step 8: Sew the Straps

Take the strap pieces and fold each long edge inward ½ inch. Press well.

Fold the strap in half lengthwise, then press again to enclose the raw edges.

Topstitch along both sides of each strap.

My straps are a little longer because I tend to carry a lot of yarn and tools, but you can shorten them if you prefer a shorter tote.

Attach the straps to the inside of the bag opening.

Sew an X inside the square to secure the straps firmly.

Step 9: Add the Yarn Feed Grommets

On the side opposite the crochet hook holder, install the grommets.

These allow your yarn to feed smoothly out of the bag while you crochet.

Thread the yarn through the grommet and continue stitching without the yarn ball rolling across the floor or tangling.

It is one of my favorite features of this bag.

Your Yarn Tote Is Finished

And that is it! Your new yarn tote bag is ready to hold all your crochet supplies.

Load it up with yarn, hooks, patterns, and maybe a few stitch markers, then take your crochet projects wherever you go.

Tips for choosing a good blog name:

• Keep it easy to spell
• Avoid numbers or hyphens
• Choose something memorable
• Make sure the name still fits if your blog grows

Before committing, check that your name is available on social media platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube. If you plan to create a YouTube channel later or share YouTube videos, having the same name across platforms keeps things consistent.

Domain Name and Hosting

Now it's time for the technical setup.

Your domain name is your website address, and hosting is the service that stores your files and makes your WordPress site visible online.

I personally use BigScoots and have found them very reliable. Their customer service team is fantastic and quick to help if you run into questions.

You may find cheaper hosting companies, but slower hosting can cause problems with loading speed and search engine optimization (SEO) later.

Many bloggers start with a budget host and upgrade later as their traffic grows.

Your domain name is your website address. Hosting is the service that stores your website files and makes your blog available on the internet.

How to Sign Up

Visit the Bigscoots website and select a hosting plan.

During the setup process, you will:

1. Select your hosting plan
2. Create your account
3. Complete payment

You can also enable domain privacy, which keeps your personal contact information hidden from public records.

If you already purchased a domain elsewhere, you can connect it in this step.

Once everything is set up, BigScoots will install WordPress for you so you can start building your self-hosted WordPress blog.

Choose and Install Your Blog Theme

Once WordPress is installed, you can log in to your WordPress dashboard and begin designing your site.

A theme controls the design of your blog, including layout, fonts, colors, and navigation.

Think of WordPress as the structure of your house, and your theme as the interior design.

There are thousands of themes available, but I recommend starting with Kadence because it's beginner-friendly and optimized for speed.

How to Install the Kadence Theme

1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
2. In the left sidebar, click Appearance.
3. Click Themes.
4. Click the Add New Theme button.
5. In the search bar, type Kadence.
6. Click Install.
7. Once it finishes installing, click Activate.

Your blog will now be running on the Kadence theme.

Import a Starter Template (Optional but Helpful)

Kadence offers starter templates that can quickly give your blog a polished layout.

To install one:

1. Go to Appearance → Kadence Starter Templates
2. Choose a layout that fits your style
3. Import the design

This will add pages and layouts that you can customize for your own content.

Sewing isn't usually my first choice of craft, but this project surprised me. It was simple, calming, and came together in about two hours from start to finish.

If you are a beginner, a new grandma, or just someone who wants to give a meaningful handmade gift without feeling overwhelmed, this is the perfect project.

There is something extra special about wrapping a baby in a quilted blanket you made yourself. I cannot wait to see this one become his favorite.

Prep the Fabric

It is always a good idea to prewash your fabric so it does not shrink or bleed after all your careful sewing.

Did I prewash? No. I live dangerously. 😂 But I recommend it.

Lay both pieces of fabric flat and press them well. You want the fabric to be smooth before building your quilt sandwich.

I could not find my iron, so I used my Cricut EasyPress. Not traditional, but it worked beautifully.

Square Up the Fabric

1. Place the right sides of the two fabric pieces together.
2. Line up the top and one side as evenly as possible.
3. Grab the aligned corner and fold both layers in half.
4. Fold in half again so you have folds along the top and left sides, with uneven edges exposed on the bottom and right.

Place the folded fabric on your self-healing mat. Using a quilting ruler and rotary cutter, trim the uneven edges from the bottom and right sides.

This step ensures both fabric panels are exactly the same size. Straight edges now make your stitching much easier later.

Add the Batting

Now it is time to build your quilt sandwich.

Lay the quilt batting flat on your work surface. If it is wrinkled from packaging, gently press it flat.

Place one piece of fabric on top of the batting, right side facing up. Smooth it carefully so there are no bubbles or folds.

Trim the batting to match the exact size of the fabric.

Tip: You can trim the batting at the same time as the fabric layers. I forgot and had to do it separately. It still works just fine.

Sew the Quilt Sandwich

Now we assemble everything.

• Bottom: Batting
• Middle: Fabric right side up
• Top: Fabric right side down

You now have a classic quilt sandwich.

Pin around the edges to keep everything from shifting.

Using a ½-inch seam allowance, sew around the entire perimeter. Leave about a 6-inch opening along one side so you can turn the blanket right side out.

After sewing, trim the corners diagonally. This reduces bulk and helps create crisp corners once turned.

Turn and Press

Reach into the opening and gently pull the right side of the blanket out.

There will be a moment when you think the opening is not big enough. Keep going. It will turn.

Use your fingers or a blunt dowel to push out the corners so they are nice and square.

The blanket will likely be wrinkled after turning. Press it flat again.

Fold the raw edges of the opening inward so they align with the sewn edge. Pin in place.

Topstitch the Edges

Sew around the entire perimeter using a ¼-inch seam allowance.

This topstitching closes the gap and gives the baby blanket a clean, finished edge.

Pivot carefully at each corner to keep everything crisp and even.

At this point, you technically have a finished blanket. But we are going to take it one step further.

Add Quilting Stitches

These final stitches are not just decorative. Quilting holds the batting in place so it does not shift, bunch, or become lumpy over time.

Measure your blanket to decide on spacing. Mine measured about 40 inches square, so I chose quilting lines every 5 inches.

Mark Your Lines

• Lay the blanket flat.
• Use a quilting ruler to draw straight lines with a water-soluble fabric marker.
• Pin across the blanket to prevent shifting.

Sew Straight Rows

Sew straight stitches directly over the marked lines. Take your time and go slow.

Once all rows are sewn in one direction, rotate the blanket 90 degrees and repeat the process. This creates a grid pattern and evenly quilted squares.

The intersecting stitches create the classic quilted look while securing the quilt sandwich.

When finished, your blanket is fully quilted and complete.

If you can sew straight-ish lines, you can do this.

This is one of those projects that looks impressive but is completely doable. And when that sweet baby is wrapped up in something you made with your own two hands, every stitch feels worth it.

If you make one, you might just find yourself planning the next baby blanket before the first one is even gifted.

First Wash Instructions

For the first wash:

• Wash alone in cold water on a delicate cycle.
• Add ⅓ cup of table salt directly to the washer to help lock in colors.
• Use mild detergent.
• Add color-catcher sheets if desired.

After washing, your baby blanket will soften beautifully and be ready for cuddles.

Start by printing your digital papers.

Since I was only making one card, I didn't want to print full sheets of every design.

Canva makes it easy to arrange multiple illustrations on one page, so nothing goes to waste.

1. Go to Canva.com and click the plus sign to create a new project.
2. Enter 8.5 x 11 inches as your page size.
3. Click Elements, then choose Grids.
4. Select the 2x2 grid, so you have four even sections.

Drag and drop your chosen digital papers into the grid frames. Even if you only need three patterns, filling all four keeps the scale consistent for scrapbooking pieces, card fronts, or invitation templates.

Click Share and download as a high-quality PDF for printing.

Open the file and print using your best quality setting. I scaled mine to fit the full page and selected a photo setting on plain paper.

The colors came out bright and crisp, which really makes the illustrations stand out.

Card Instructions

Now let's turn those digital papers into a finished card.

1. Trim the four printed rectangles apart.
2. Cut a sheet of 8.5 x 11 white cardstock in half lengthwise.
3. Fold one strip in half to create a 4.25 x 5.5-inch card base (A2 size).

Cut your layering pieces:

• Coordinating solid cardstock: 4 x 5.25 inches
• White cardstock for greeting: 2.5 x 1.625 inches

From three different digital papers, cut two smaller shapes each.

Rectangles work great, but this is where you can get creative. These same shapes can easily be used as scrapbooking embellishments or layered pieces for invitations.

Stamp your greeting onto the white rectangle using coordinating ink.

Before gluing, lightly ink around the edges of your patterned pieces. This adds depth and helps the illustrations stand out against the background.

Arrange everything on the solid cardstock layer first. Move pieces around until the spacing feels balanced. Once you're happy, glue them down.

Add adhesive foam dots behind the greeting to give it dimension. Then attach the completed panel to the front of your card base.

And just like that, you've turned digital papers into a handmade card that feels thoughtful and personal.

This layout is so flexible that you can easily reuse it for scrapbooking pages, printable templates, or even layered invitations.

Just swap the digital illustrations, and you've got a whole new look.

Measure Your Bucket

If your bucket has a sticker or label, remove that first.

Use a ruler to measure the flat area on the front of the bucket where your design will go. This will determine how large to size your SVG.

I set my design height to 4 inches to fit my bucket. Your measurements may be different, especially if you're using one of the taller five-gallon buckets.

Resize in Cricut Design Space

I'm using Cricut Design Space for this project. If you're using another cutting program, your screens may look a little different, but the overall process is the same.

1. Upload the SVG into Cricut Design Space.
2. Add it to your Canvas.
3. Resize it based on your measurements.
4. Click Make.

On the mat preview screen, confirm that everything looks correct, then click Next.

Choose adhesive vinyl as your material.

Place your vinyl on a StandardGrip mat, load it into your Cricut, and start the cut.

Prepare Vinyl Decal

Once your design is cut:

1. Use a weeding tool to remove the excess vinyl.
2. Start from a corner and slowly peel away the background.
3. Remove the small inner pieces from the letters or design.

Cut a piece of transfer tape slightly larger than your design.

Place the transfer tape over the decal and use a scraper tool to firmly press it down.

Tip: If small pieces aren't lifting, flip the design over and gently burnish from the back.

Apply the Vinyl to the Bucket

Before applying the decal, clean the bucket's surface with isopropyl alcohol. This removes dust and oils so the vinyl sticks well.

Peel the liner off the back of the vinyl, making sure the design remains on the transfer tape.

To help center the design:

• Mark the center of your bucket with a small piece of painter's tape if needed
• Lightly fold the non-sticky edges together to find the middle

Place the decal onto the bucket and press it down with your scraper tool.

Slowly peel the transfer tape straight back, making sure all vinyl pieces stay on the bucket.

If something lifts, lay the tape back down and burnish again.

And You're Done

That's it. Your new DIY garden bucket is ready to use.

I don't spend hours in a big vegetable garden, but I do have plenty of houseplants that seem to multiply overnight.

Having one dedicated bucket for tools and supplies keeps everything within reach and makes repotting feel less chaotic.

Plan the Layout

Start by removing the back of the shadow box frame.

My frame already had a black velvet backing, which worked perfectly. If your frame doesn't include a fabric backer, you can easily add one using felt or fabric cut to size.

Before attaching anything, lay out all your items and experiment with placement. Take your time here.

For my frame, I placed the collar stretched across the bottom, the photo above it, and left space at the top for the vinyl decal.

Once you find a layout that feels right, you're ready to secure everything.

Each side of the Velcro has adhesive, so it holds the photo securely while still allowing you to remove or adjust it later if needed.

To secure the collar, use sewing pins pushed into the velvet backing at a slight angle.

I used three pins to hold the collar in place. If your pet's collar is heavier or thicker, you may want to add a few extra pins for support.

Make sure everything feels secure before moving on.

Reassemble the Frame

Place the backing back into the shadow box frame and secure it using the tabs or fasteners that came with your frame.

Before adding the vinyl decal, clean both sides of the glass using glass cleaner and a lint-free cloth.

This helps the vinyl adhere smoothly and keeps fingerprints from being trapped inside the frame.

Set the frame aside while you prepare the vinyl design.

Create the Cricut Vinyl Decal

I created my vinyl design in Cricut Design Space, but you can use any design software that works with your cutting machine.

The fonts I used are Alex Brush and Lucida Grande. These are not Cricut fonts, so you'll need to download them separately if you want the same look.

The small crown graphic can be found in Cricut Images.

Cut the design from white vinyl, then carefully weed the excess vinyl, including the centers of the letters and the small details in the crown.

Apply transfer tape over the vinyl design and smooth it down so it lifts cleanly from the backing sheet.

Apply the Decal

Center the vinyl design near the top of the glass and gently press it into place.

Slowly peel back the transfer tape, making sure the vinyl letters stick to the glass. If a letter lifts, press it back down and continue peeling carefully.

Once the transfer tape is removed, give the decal a final press to ensure it adheres well.

This shadow box already means so much to me. It's a small piece of decor, but it holds a lot of love and memories.

Having it displayed in our home has helped ease some of the pain of losing Eva, and I'm grateful to have a place dedicated to remembering her.

The Design Goal for this Girl's Room

For this room, I had to bring not only my vision to life… but also my daughter's vision. It gave me a little peek into what working with clients might feel like. Luckily, my daughter is pretty easy to please!

Once I put up the board and batten, I knew I wanted to paint it a color rather than the traditional white. My daughter was completely on board, and she's always wanted gold incorporated… which I actually love!

I wanted this room to feel modern, yet delicate, because that's totally her personality.

It needed to be girly without making her feel too grown up, but still be able to grow with her (classic mom dilemma).

And the biggest must-have? A giant desk, because she loves to draw and basically do anything involving paper.

My daughter loves any form of office supplies, so when I ran across a few pieces at Hobby Lobby, it felt like the perfect fit. Especially paired with her ghost chair.

Cut Paper

Start with one sheet of 8½ x 11-inch white cardstock.

Cut the white cardstock into strips:

• 8 strips: ½" x 3½"
• 8 strips: ½" x 4¾"
• 8 strips: ½" x 6¼"
• 1 strip: ½" x 8½" (this is the arm strip)

On the ½" x 8½" strip, make a small pencil mark in the center at 4¼".

Cut one thin strip from patterned paper:

• 1 strip: ¼" x 4¼" (this becomes the hat band)

Then cut out the template pieces from the printable. Trace them onto cardstock:

• Most pieces are black cardstock
• The mittens can be any color or pattern (I like matching them to the hat band, but you don't have to)

Once everything is cut, you're ready to assemble.

Hat Assembly

Let's build the hat first.

Curve the rectangle by rolling it over the edge of a table. This keeps it from creasing and helps it look more like a real little top hat.

Add a thin strip of double-sided adhesive to one short end and wrap it into a tube.

Add adhesive to the back of the patterned paper strip and wrap it around the base of the hat to create the band. Start near the back seam to keep it tidy.

Fold the tabs inward, add glue dots to the tabs, and press the hat onto the brim.

The circle with two tabs is the top of the hat. If that part is too fussy for small hands, it's totally fine to skip it.

Here is the finished hat!

Snowman Assembly

This is where the snowman starts to come to life.

Stack your longest strips neatly, line up the ends, and punch a hole in each end using the ⅛" hole on the Crop-A-Dile.

Repeat with the middle strips and the shortest strips.

Punch a hole in the center of the ½" x 8½" strip where you made your pencil mark.

Glue a mitten to each end of the arm strip, making sure both thumbs point in the same direction.

These steps matter the most. The fastener direction doesn't matter, but the layer order does.

Put a paper fastener through one end of the long strip stack and open to secure.

Add a fastener through one end of the middle strip stack, then push it through the other end of the long strip stack, and open the brad.

Insert a fastener through the small strip stack, then go through the center hole of the arm strip, then through the middle stack, and fasten it.

Last, insert a fastener through that last hole in the small strip stack.

Here is what the full strip should look like. Pay attention to how the strips are layered. The middle section should be underneath the long strip stack and the short strip stack.

If the strips aren't forming balls later, it usually means something was layered out of order. If that happens, don't panic-just back up to this step and check the stacks.

This next part is the "okay, wow, it's actually working!" moment.

Start with the bottom (the longest strip stack), divide the strips in half with your fingers, and spread the two sections apart.

Then spread all of the strips apart to form a ball shape.

Repeat for the middle stack, then the smallest stack on top.

The top ball is the trickiest because it's so small. Kids might need a little help separating those strips.

Finish the Snowman

Now add the details that make him cute.

Add glue dots to the top of the head and press the hat into place.

Attach the boots with glue dots so he can stand up.

If he's wobbly, add an extra glue dot or gently adjust the strips until he balances.

Use a black marker to draw the face and buttons.

Cut a tiny carrot nose from orange paper and glue it on.

And that's it-your paper strip snowman is ready to hang out on a shelf, mantel, or kids' craft table.

I'm not saying you need an army of these… but I'm also not saying you don't. ⛄️

Crafting with paper strips is simple, quick, and really fun for kids. Here are a few more ideas to try next!

I'm officially hooked on making quilts, and I fully blame Ashley from Mommy by Day Crafter by Night and her quilt along for starting it all.

My first real project was a zig-zag quilt, and once I finished it, I couldn't stop thinking about what to make next.

This baby doll quilt felt like the perfect next step. It's small, manageable, and a great way for a beginner to practice working with layers, stitches, and straight lines without feeling overwhelmed.

I adjusted the size and steps from my original quilt so it would work just right for dolls, and I'm sharing exactly how I made it so you can make one too.

This is such an amazing way to practice quilting skills while creating something playful and useful.

Choosing the best fabric is mostly a matter of personal preference, but quilting cotton is easy to sew, presses well, and holds stitches well.

Doll Quilt Instructions

Step 1: Ruffle the Fabric Strips

Start with the three quilt top strips. You'll be ruffling both long sides of each strip.

You can use a ruffle foot on your sewing machine if you have one, or use the classic gathering method:

• Sew a long straight stitch along each long edge
• Use a longer stitch length and slightly loosen the tension
• Gently pull the bottom thread to gather the fabric

If you haven't done this before, a quick gathering tutorial can be really helpful and will show the process better than words alone.

Keep gathering until each strip measures 24 inches long.

Once ruffled, place each strip on top of its matching lining piece with right sides facing up.

Topstitch them together, keeping your seam allowance consistent.

When finished, you should have three completed strips, each with the ruffled fabric on top and the lining fabric underneath.

Step 2: Arrange the Quilt Top

Lay out the three ruffled strips and decide the order you like best.

To sew them together, place two strips right sides together and align the long edges.

Use the thread seams from attaching the ruffles as a guide and sew straight lines down the length of the strip.

Repeat with the final strip. When finished, your quilt top should be fully assembled, with the ruffles running vertically.

Step 3: Create the Quilt Sandwich

Lay your quilt backing flat, right side down. If needed, use a flat sheet or floor space to spread it out smoothly.

Place the batting on top and smooth out any wrinkles. Then place the quilt top on top, right side up. This layered stack is called a quilt sandwich.

Step 4: Pin the Layers

Use safety pins to pin through all the layers, spacing them evenly across the quilt.

This helps keep everything from shifting while you sew.

Step 5: Quilt the Layers

Now it's time to quilt. I used the stitching-in-the-ditch method, which is very beginner-friendly.

Sew directly over the seams between each strip. The stitches blend into the seams, making them less noticeable on the quilt top.

Try to keep your lines straight since they will show more clearly on the quilt backing.

Step 6: Trim the Quilt

Square up the quilt by trimming the edges. A cutting mat and rotary cutter make this easier, but scissors work too.

Since this quilt is for a baby doll, I didn't stress too much about perfection.

Step 7: Add the Binding

Finish the quilt by adding the binding using the 5½ x 90-inch strip. You'll need to piece shorter strips together to reach the full length.

Follow a quilt binding tutorial to attach it neatly and securely.

I'm so happy with how this baby doll quilt turned out. It's soft, playful, and the perfect size for little hands. My daughter is going to love it!

Best Cut for Beef Tips

Choosing the right cut makes a big difference, especially when cooking in liquid for several hours.

Sirloin - Best Overall Choice

Sirloin is tender, lean, and easy to cut into even cubes. It cooks well in both a skillet and the slow cooker and stays meaty without getting stringy.

This is my go-to for classic beef tips.

Tenderloin - Most Tender Option

Tenderloin is incredibly tender with very little fat and cooks quickly.

It's more expensive, so I save it for special occasions or quick stovetop recipes.

Chuck Roast - Best for Long Slow Cooking

Chuck roast is a tougher cut of meat with more connective tissue, which makes it perfect for the crockpot.

After hours of slow cooking, it breaks down beautifully, turning fork-tender and richly flavored.

If your beef tips are cooking all day, this is a great option.

Stew Meat - Best Bufget Friendly Option

Stew meat is usually a mix of cuts, often from chuck.

It's affordable and convenient, though the texture can vary.

It works best when simmered long enough in gravy so everything has time to soften.

Quick Rule of Thumb

• Slow cooker, shorter cook time: Sirloin
• Slow cooker, all-day cooking: Chuck roast
• Quick stovetop or skillet beef tips: Sirloin or tenderloin

How to Store Leftovers

In the Fridge

Let the beef tips cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Tip: Store the beef and gravy together, but keep rice or mashed potatoes separate if possible so everything reheats together.

In the Freezer

Allow the beef tips to cool fully and place them in freezer-safe containers or heavy-duty freezer bags.

Store in the freezer for up 3 months for the best texture and flavor.

Tip: This recipe freezes very well, thanks to the gravy. Freeze in meal-sized portions for quick dinners later.

Reheating Tips

Microwave - Best for Single Servings

• Place beef tips and gravy in a microwave-safe bowl.
• Cover loosely.
• Heat in 60-90 second intervals, stirring between rounds, until heated through.
• Add a splash of beef broth or water if the gravy has thickened.

Stovetop - Best for Texture

• Add leftovers to a saucepan over medium-low heat.
• Stir occasionally until warmed through.
• Add a little broth or water as needed to loosen the gravy.

Oven - For Larger Servings

• Preheat oven to 325°F.

Measure

Start by measuring the front of your shirt to decide what size to cut your design.

My shirt is a medium, and a 9-inch-wide design fits perfectly.

This size works well for most adult tees, but you can always adjust as needed.

Cricut Design Space

For this project, I'm using Cricut Design Space.

If you're using Silhouette Studio or another design program, your steps may look a little different.

Upload the SVG into Cricut Design Space and add it to your Canvas.

The design is already layered, so there's no need to separate anything.

I resized the design to 9 inches wide and made no further changes.

Once everything looked good, I clicked Make.

On the mat preview screen, click Mirror and double-check that both mats are mirrored.

This step matters anytime you're cutting iron-on so your design reads correctly once it's pressed.

Click Next, then select your material. My first cut was Smart Iron-On, which doesn't require a mat.

I loaded the Smart Iron-On and pressed the blinking button to start the cut.

Once the white layer finished, I repeated the process with the glitter iron-on.

Weed the Design

Iron-on is honestly my favorite material to weed. I usually start in a corner and gently pull away the excess.

Don't forget to weed the centers of the letters. That part is easy to miss.

When you're finished, flip the design over to read it normally and double-check that everything is weeded correctly.

Apply the Iron-On

I'm using the Cricut Autopress, but any heat press will work for this project.

Before pressing, I checked the Cricut Heat Guide to confirm the correct temperature and time.

Just select your heat press, transfer material, and base material, and it gives you everything you need.

I preheated my press to 315°F and set the timer for 50 seconds. These settings worked for both the Smart Iron-On and the glitter iron-on.

While the press heated up, I prepped my shirt by running a lint roller over the front to remove any fuzz or hair.

I layered the glitter over the white iron-on with the spacing I wanted.

To find the center, I folded the design in half horizontally, then lightly pinched the edges.

Those pinch marks make lining everything up much easier.

A T-shirt ruler helps with placement, but it's not required.

I placed the design about 3 inches below the collar.

The iron-on liner is slightly sticky, so once the design was in place, I peeled up the glitter layer and moved the shirt to the heat press.

When I closed the Autopress, the timer started automatically and opened when the press finished.

Both layers use a cool peel, so I moved the shirt aside and gave it a quick flap to help it cool faster. Once it was cool to the touch, I peeled away the liner.

Next, I placed the glitter layer, covered the white iron-on with its liner for protection, and pressed again at the same temperature and for the same time.

After cooling, I peeled the glitter liner and admired my work.

I love how this shirt turned out. The pink glitter is completely me, and it adds just the right amount of sparkle without feeling over-the-top.

I made this quilt back in 2012, and even now, it still makes me smile when I see it folded up or spread out.

I wanted to reshare this story because my first quilt taught me so much, and I'm still genuinely proud of both how it turned out and everything I learned along the way.

If you've ever thought about trying quilting but felt a little unsure or intimidated, this post is for you.

Learning a new craft can be messy, a little frustrating, and totally worth it all at the same time.

My Quilt

I am absolutely in love with my quilt! Isn't it so pretty?

I made it while participating in the Zig Zag Quilt Along hosted by Mommy By Day, Crafter By Night.

I had wanted to make a quilt for years, but the idea of quilting felt intimidating.

There are a lot of steps, a lot of math, and a lot of places where things can go sideways.

When Ashley announced the quilt along, it felt like the push I needed.

Having clear instructions and someone walking through the process made it feel doable, even for me.

For my quilt, I used layer cakes from Southern Fabric. Layer cakes are precut 10 x 10 inch square pieces of fabric that all coordinate together, which meant I didn't have to stress about matching prints or colors.

I could just focus on learning how to quilt. They were perfect for a beginner quilter.

That exact fabric collection isn't available anymore, but there are always so many great options out there.

To finish the quilt, I also bought a yard of matching fabric for the binding.

The quilt-along covered everything from choosing fabric to sewing the quilt top, making the quilt sandwich, and finishing it off.

Having that guidance made a huge difference.

Want to see what I'm most proud of?!

There's one tiny spot where all my seams line up perfectly. I stared at it for way longer than I probably should have. 😆

When you're new to quilting, moments like this feel like a big win.

The quilt itself isn't perfect, not even close. There's a reason I didn't show the back.

It's fine… but let's just say it shows my learning curve. I also may have forgotten to take photos of it, which happens more often than I'd like to admit.

What I Learned Along the Way

Making my first quilt taught me more than I expected. Some lessons were obvious, some were painful, and a few are funny now that enough time has passed.

If you're thinking about starting your first quilt, here are a few things I learned.

Things I Learned the Hard Way

• There is a real reason some fabrics cost more than others
• Quilting is never perfect, and that's part of the charm
• You will stab yourself with a needle at some point
• Binding is still not my strong suit and needs more practice
• Quilting is way more addicting than I expected

Working at a sewing machine for hours, keeping track of threads, lining up right sides, and sewing a consistent inch seam allowance takes practice.

Mistakes happen, seams wander, and sometimes you just keep going anyway.

Why My Quilt Doesn't Have Borders

You might notice this quilt doesn't have borders around the outside like many quilts do. That was a very intentional choice.

First, I had often dreamed of a simple zig-zag quilt without borders. I liked the clean, straightforward look.

Second, I didn't want to spend extra money on more fabric. Quilting supplies add up fast, and I was already stretching my budget.

And third, I knew myself well enough to admit I wouldn't have time to add borders and still finish within a month. Even without them, I finished later than planned.

Sometimes choosing what to skip is just as important as choosing what to add.

The Fabric Mistake I Won't Make Again

I already knew there was a reason higher-quality fabric costs more. Still, I talked myself into cutting corners for my first quilt.

I told myself, "It's my first quilt. I'll just use cheaper fabric for the backing."

That was a mistake.

I was nervous about messing things up and couldn't justify spending $40 on backing fabric.

The fabric I chose was too lightweight and refused to cooperate. It bunched up, shifted constantly, and made putting the quilt sandwich together way more frustrating than it needed to be.

Next time, I'll spend the money on better backing fabric. That lesson stuck.

Cricut Design Space

For the following steps, I'll be using Cricut Design Space.

If you use Silhouette Studio or another design software, your steps may differ from mine.

To start, upload the SVG into Cricut Design Space and add it to your Canvas.

The finished size of the project is approximately 3.25 x 2 x 5.25 inches.

The design can be resized, but I don't recommend going any smaller, as some pieces are already very small.

When designing outside of Cricut Design Space, we cannot assign line functions for scoring, so we must make this adjustment when importing the file.

Highlight the entire design and Ungroup.

Highlight only the bag lines, go to Operations, and change them to Score.

This will change the solid lines to dashed lines, indicating they are scored lines, not cut.

Then highlight the bag lines and the bag itself, and Attach.

These are the only changes that need to be made. I am ready to cut, so I'll click on Make.

The next screen is Mat Preview, where I can swipe through the different mats. I don't need to do anything here, so I'll click on Next.

All of the materials I am cutting are the same. I'll select Medium Cardstock - 80lb and tap Remember Material Setting so I don't have to return to this screen for every mat.

The mat at the top of the screen indicates the cardstock color to load, and section 2 shows when to insert the Scoring Wheel.

Follow the prompts in Cricut Design Space to cut all pieces for the design.

Here are all the pieces to create one box that I cut with my Cricut.

Paper Piece Dinosaur

To start, I'll assemble the cute little dinosaur.

The larger dark gray piece is the base for my layering.

Before you glue, lay the pieces out to ensure your dinosaur is oriented correctly and the text is legible.

If the dino is assembled backwards, you won't be able to read the heart he is holding.

Apply glue to the back of the dinosaur's body, then layer it onto the dark gray base.

There should be even spacing along the body's edges.

Next, adhere the white tummy aligning the top edge of the stomach, then the cheek, and last the heart.

He is so cute!

Bag Assembly

Fold the bag along the score lines.

Use a bone folder and fold along those score lines.

I like to fold along score lines, and you can learn more about my technique in How to Score and Fold Cardstock.

The top of the bag has two pinch folds. These are too hard to get in with the bone folder, so fold along those score lines by pinching them.

Fold the side flap in, apply glue, and then fold the bag in half. Pressing the raw edge of the bag into the glued flap.

Apply glue to the back of the dinosaur, then adhere it to the front of the bag.

For the bottom, fold both square side flaps down, apply glue to one triangle flap, fold it down, then apply glue to the remaining triangle flap and fold it down.

Place the bag on the table and press down from the inside to ensure all flaps adhere.

Don't put anything in the bag until you know the bottom is dry and secure.

You can fill the bag with anything you'd like. I love Truffles, but you could put small gifts inside, or anything you wanted.

Cut a length of ribbon about 12-14 inches long, string it through the holes in the top of the bag, and tie a cute bow.

The Valentine's Day treat bags are now ready to gift! Aren't they cute?
