I'm what you'd call a 'fixer' type engineer. Though I graduated with a degree in material engineer back in the 70s, I've had the great pleasure of working in a variety of fields for a number of companies, some of which don't even exist anymore, like AMC. I've worked in mechanical, electrical, civil, and even did computer based math models for Argon National.

Back when I attended college, we not only had to look up material properties, equations and conversions on paper, they didn't even have them in our own separate text books. We had to borrow a small set of manuals that had these values in them, write the values down then walk back to our dorms to complete the homework assignment. God help you if you didn't have a few sheets of paper and a pencil on you at all times.

I've been a contractor for the last 20 years, best decision I've ever made. But, I was able to transition into this field easily because I had the years of experience along with the know-how from the wide variety of projects I've completed.

Hate to say it, but engineers today aren't so lucky. Between the 40s-early 2000s were the good years for folks like us, not so much anymore. Forget about making millions or being surrounded by girls, why you'd ever want to date your co-workers is beyond me.

Our field has certainly gone downhill, schools continue to pump out copious amounts of mediocre engineers, companies continue outsourcing jobs to those who will do them for a third of what an American would, and those who do hire engineers will certainly treat them like disposable cameras.

Why on earth someone would want to enter the field today is beyond me. New engineers today sacrifice a lot more then I ever did, with fewer job prospects and a load of debt while exchanging the funnest years of your life for studying and stress.

My advice to anyone today is just pursue what you absolutely have a passion for, try to learn it anyway you can with out attending an academic institution. Libraries, online classes and internships are all free and most tech schools are much cheaper than a typical state school.

i have 2 pdfs i.e 1.pdf & 2.pdf whose footer may or may not contain page no.s. I want to merget these 2 pdfs. The output pdf should have page no.s. Is is possible ? if yes, how ?
e.g. 1.pdf is having 5 pages and 2.pdf is having 2 pages.
then the output pdf will be of 7 pages but its footer should be page 1/7 , 2/7 ...etc.

hi Chuck
Thanks for reading. Not sure you noticed, I wrote this post more than 3 1/2 years ago. I supposed the state-of-the-art in batteries have moved considerably since then.

Not sure if my knowledge is rusty, but would the Roomba able to handle the charging / discharging profile of NiMH, compared to NiCd? Would it be safety risk if the wrong charging profile is used?
