Tasteful, stylish and very relaxing, the newly refurbished residence was featured in Lookbox’s recent editorial. As for us, we’re just glad we could help our client turn their house into a home.

Home is, as they say, where the heart is. So when a family living in Chempaka Kuning Link asked us for a modern resort feel to their two-storey house so they can relax after a long day, we jumped at the chance to give them the home they’ve always wanted.

Deciding on natural, earth tones, we applied several timber finishes throughout the house, creating a unified look with sleek, modern lines. Dark chocolaty tones with cream-coloured contrasts meld with soft lighting for a warm, cosy atmosphere. The master bedroom continues the soothing palette of creams and browns. Wanting to add a touch of luxury to the space, we added a soft-padded headboard above the bed flanked by two mirrors.

Completing the overall look is the furniture. Downstairs, a leather and chrome-finished dining set holds pride of place in the dining hall, while high-gloss white overhead cabinets balance out the lower dark walnut base cabinets in the adjacent kitchen.

Launched amidst much fanfare on 16/9/2011, the showroom turns the spotlight on experimental designs that fulfil both aesthetic and practical functions. The study, for example, boasts a tree-shaped bookshelf, exemplifying the term “tree of knowledge” while adding visual impact to the room. Equally striking is the dynamic kitchen set-up complete with LED lights and craggy angles on the ceiling and faceted island counter.

Beyond bold designs, the showroom also houses more subtle yet intriguing inspirations, including living areas with a puzzle of wooden strips on the wall to create texture, unusual angles in the ceiling for variety and a collection of unique furniture that dot each space.

Says Kim Da, “In displaying the unconventional, we hope to give visitors new ideas which they can adopt and adapt to suit their own homes.”

While there are many reasons why we do what we do – the love for art, working in unique spaces, creating something spectacular, transforming houses into homes, none of us here at Chew Interior can deny the feeling we get when our customers are happy. It’s the genuine buzz we feel when we know we have made a difference in someone’s life; it may even be just a small impact, but it really reminds us why we are in this business in the first place.

It is after all, the business of homes, of families, of people. It is the art of transforming concrete and metal into a warm place where people would want to come back home to everyday. We deal in love, pride and excitement just as much as we deal in plastics, wood and metals. Every time we receive a complement, a word of thanks, even a smile, it makes all the effort worthwhile, and it is important that we celebrate when this happens.

One of our designers that we would like to highlight is the effervescent Derek Lee, who has not once, but twice made a difference in our customers lives recently. A very grateful customer, Stanley Han recently wrote in to commend him on his excellent service levels and professionalism during the renovation works conducted at his place. In fact, the family was so impressed by Derek’s ingenuity and creativity; they immediately stopped their search for an interior designer and appointed Chew Interior as their ID.  Derek’s work was so thorough, that even after the 6 week renovation process; Stanley still sits at home and admires the work done. Kudos to our very own Derek Lee for making such an impact on his life. But it doesn’t stop there, Mr Lee received another glowing letter of recommendation from couple C P Wong and Wai Ling. Despite a tight deadline to meet the Christmas cheer, our designer Derek Lee took on the project and made a little miracle happen in their lives this yuletide season. They were so happy with the project that has now made them the envy of their neighbours all over Holland Ave, that they were more than willing to recommend him and Chew Interior to their friends and family.

Our next stop is our designer Vernice, who has also shown the Chew Interior spirit to make customers happy. Pamela from Fernvale, who has contracted our services wrote in to say a huge thank you to her, calling her a ‘great help’ to ensure that everything went well.

From these letters, and so many more, we know that our work has made an impact on the lives of people from all walks of life, and we will continue to share more stories as they come in.

Mood Rings, Lava Lamps, Monkey Lights, Glowing Crystals. The human race is absolutely astounded by lights and colours and this phenomenon of ‘mood lighting’ has crept its way into even the most humblest of living rooms – transforming an ordinary living space into enchanting experiences. Recently, lighting giant Phillips collaborated with the top design companies and creatives in Singapore to create a breathtaking experience of ‘oo’s and aa’s’ – and of course, Chew Interior designers were on hand to show visitors our brand of magic.

This ‘larger than light exhibition’ was powered by Phillips and its new range of LED lights that come in a range of exciting colours.  These mood lamps were the paint that our designers would use to show their creativity and display, the dramatic changes to a living space that an intelligent and creative application of coloured lights could affect. Their only limitation was the budget – $3, 000 worth of lights at market value could be used to decorate the living spaces chosen. Other than that, it was all down to the imagination and hard work of the designers.

Chew Interior designers chose a lounge setting for their set-up. Why? Well this is where the individual comes to relax, to put their mind at ease, forgetting the daily stresses of work and life and simply just sink into relaxation. Lighting would be used to amplify this feeling, to soothe and put at ease the individual or family looking for solace. The predominantly pastel lounge, with its Jetsons style reclining chair, cozy environment and minimalistic features were installed with tube lights that stretched from floor to almost the top of the ceiling.  The white room was chosen because like all art, the colours emitted from the LED light would be contrasted well against the walls and ceiling – displaying how they could change the mood of the room to full effect.

Just like magic, and with a little flick of a switch, the LED lights literally transformed the room from cooling blues to soothing warm yellows. It was an amazing display of something as basic as light and colour could be a powerful tool to change a static space into a dynamic experience that can be adjusted simply by replacing and changing the colour. The coloured LED added a new layer of design, and eye catching art work that creates a new milieu every time the lights come on.

In the last episode of Reno-V, the renovation that is taking place in Pertapis Children’s Home is being completed. The laminate flooring in the girls’ dormitory has been installed, new curtains are put up and all the beds have been moved in to the newly renovated dormitories.

The children in Pertapis receive a surprise visit by the popular group Sleeq, who spends the day performing and interacting with them.

As the episode draws to a close, Fadhlur & Nora bring the children and guests from Chew Interior Design and other business partners of Chew Interior Design to reveal the newly renovated dormitories.

The team has come to their final destination for this leg of Reno-V. Their destination is Pertapis Children’s Home and the mission is to renovate both the boy’s and girl’s dorms.

Located at Kovan Road (off Yio Chu Kang Road), Pertapis Children’s Home is also a program under the Pertapis umbrella of welfare services. Pertapis Children’s Home vision is driven by its aspiration to “nurture and develop our children to be responsible adults” and its mission is to “provide a loving and wholesome home for the emotional, social, physical, educational and spiritual development of the children who have been separated from their families so as to enable them to their full potential”.

Nora and Fadhlur don’t waste any time and begin discussions with Chew Interior designer Felix Setiawan on the work to be done. Nora also seeks help from Nippon Paint’s staff who shares about the importance of colour in enhancing moods.

Meanwhile, as work begins to pile, Nora is perturbed that Fadhlur seems distracted and is constantly talking on the phone. Little does Nora know that Fadhlur is actually arranging a surprise for the children at Pertapis Children’s Home with special appearances by Sengkang-Punggol FC’s players.

In the second installation of renovations at the Pertapis Senior Citizen’s Fellowship Home, the new look for the toilets designed by the Chew Interior team is taking shape. The new tiles are being installed, replacing the worn out and broken ones.

While the toilet accessories are being fixed, Fadhlur chooses to surprise Nora and the residents by inviting two celebrity chefs, Chef Bob and Chef Khaled. Chef Bob and Chef Khaled spend the afternoon demonstrating the preparation of dishes specially for the residents while chatting and interacting with them.

The episode also features a volunteer at the Home who reaches out to the residents though music. As the day draws to a close, Fadhlur and Nora invite Chew Interior’s representative to present the newly renovated toilets to the staff and also the residents.

After successfully transforming Ain Society’s empty office area into a vibrant multi-function space conducive for motivational seminar activities and other classes, Nora and Fadhlur are raring to go for their second mission. As it turns out the second mission is going to be more challenging than the first.

Located at a quiet Toa Payoh neighborhood is Pertapis Senior Citizen Fellowhip Home, a program under the Pertapis umbrella of welfare services. Pertapis is a registered organization under the Societies Act since 1970 and is driven by its vision of being “the best we can be in the service to the community” and its mission “to do everything we can to make life more meaningful for the poor and the unfortunate”.

Lavatories in Bad Shape

The mission for Nora and Fadhlur is to upgrade the worn down lavatories at Pertapis Senior Citizen Fellowship Home. Work begins immediately as old ties are hacked to give way to new ones.

While renovation is underway, Chew Interior’s interior designer shares about how to make toilets a safer place for the elderly. Nora and Fadhlur also visits a tiles showroom to find out tips on how to match tiles with bathrooms.

Before spending an afternoon with the residents, Nora has tasked Fadhlur to set the table with food and also entertain the residents. Suria Hosts Fadhlur and Nora

The renovation at Ain Society is going smoothly with the feature wall and other features being installed by Chew Interior Design.

Fadhlur and Nora prepares for the unveiling of the newly renovated spaces with eager anticipation. However, before they could surprise the staff at Ain Society, the surprise is on them as they are tasked to organize the first talk to be held in the newly renovated room.

As time is not on their side, they sprung into action and invited celebrity speaker Rudy Marican who shared some valuable life lessons with the beneficiaries of Ain Society. As part of the session, an Ain Society beneficiary shares about how she gritted through hardships of raising her children while going through a major surgery.
