నగర జీవితం - పల్లె జీవితం

ఏముంది నగర జీవితంలో, ఎటు చూసినా కాంక్రీట్ అడవులు, ట్రాఫిక్ జాములు, నీళ్ళ కాలుష్యం, వాయు కాలుష్యం, ఏ కాలుష్యం పడితే ఆ కాలుష్యం...తాగే పాలు కల్తీ, తినే తిండి కల్తీ….

కూరగాయలు, పండ్లు వంటి వాటిలో ఏ విష పదార్ధాలున్నాయో తెలియదు.

పొద్దున్నుంచి సాయంత్రం వరకు ఎ.సి. లో గడిపి కొంచెం ఎండలోకి వస్తే చాలు తల పైకెత్తి చూడలేకపోతున్నాం.

పాల ఉత్పత్తి కోసం పశువులకి ఏవొ హార్మోన్ ఇంజక్షన్లు చేయటం, లేదా ఏవో రసాయనాలు కలిపి కృత్రిమ పాలు తయారుచేయటం, ఆ పాలు మనం తాగి లేని పోని రోగాలు కొని తెచ్చుకుంటున్నాం. చివరికి మంచినీళ్ళు కూడా కొనుక్కొని తాగుతున్నాం. కనీసం అవి అయినా మంచివేనా అంటే చెప్పలేని దుస్థితి. ఈ మంచి నీళ్ళు కొనుక్కొని తాగే పాడు సంస్కృతి పల్లెలకు కూడా వ్యాపిస్తుంది మెల్ల మెల్లగా.

ఇక కూరగాయలు పండ్లు విషయానికొస్తే అవి తాజాగా ఉండటానికి వాటిపైన వ్యాక్స్(మోతాదుకి మించి) వేస్తున్నారు. అంతే కాకుండా చాలా కూరగాయలపై రకరకాల ఎరువుల అవశేషాలు అలానే ఉంటాయి..అలాగే కొన్ని పండ్లు త్వరగా పండాలని రకరకాల రసాయనాలు జల్లుతారు. ఆరోగ్యం కోసమని మనం తినే కూరగాయలు పండ్లు మనకి తెలికుండానే అనారోగ్యాన్ని కొని తెచ్చిపెడుతున్నాయి.వ్యాపారం చేసేవాడెప్పుడూ లాభాపేక్షతోనే చేస్తాడు..ఇలాంటివి జరగటం సహజం...ఇలా జరగకూడదు అని అనుకోవటం మన పిచ్చి. పసిపిల్లలకు ఎక్కువగా ఆహారమైన పాలని కూడా ఇంత దారుణంగా కల్తీ చేస్తున్నారంటేనే అర్ధం చేసుకోవచ్చు వ్యాపారం చేసేవాళ్ళకు డబ్బే ముఖ్యం అని.

ఊర్లో వాతావరణం ఇందుకు పూర్తిగా విరుద్ధం. పాలు మనమే పితుక్కోని తాగొచ్చు, మనకున్న స్థలంలో మనమే కావలసిన కూరగాయలు పండించుకోవచ్చు.అలాగే కాలానుగుణంగా లభించే మామిడికాయలు, బొప్పాయి, జామ, దానిమ్మ, నారింజ, అరటి, పనస, ఉసిరి, సీతాఫలం వంటి పండ్లు చాలా వరకు మనకు ఊర్లో దొరుకుతాయి.

మనం ఇక్కడే నగరాల్లో బతుకుతున్నాం, మన పిల్లలు ఇక్కడే పుడతారు, ఇక్కడే పెరుగుతారు. ఇది కోడి, ఇది ఆవు, ఇది పిచ్చుక, ఇది తూనిగ, ఇది కోకిల అని ఫోటోల్లో చూపించటం తప్పితే మన పిల్లలు వాటిని చూడలేరేమో అనిపిస్తుంది. తెలతెలవారుతుండగానే కోడికూతకు లేచిన రోజులున్నాయి, ఇంటి బయట మంచాలు వేసుకొని ఆకాశంలో నక్షత్రాలకేసి అలా చూస్తూ పడుకున్న రోజులున్నాయి. నగర జీవితంలో రాత్రిల్లు నక్షత్రాలు కనిపించాయంటే అదొక వింత.

ఏ కారణం చేతనైతేనేమి, పండించేవాడికన్నా తినేవాళ్ళు ఎక్కువైతే తిండి ఎక్కడినుంచి దొరుకుతుంది.

అన్ని కృత్రిమంగా తయారు చేస్తున్నారు.

రేపటి ప్రపంచాన్ని ఊహించుకుంటేనే భయంకరంగా ఉంది.

కనీసం నా చివరి రొజుల్లో అయినా నా బాల్యంలో నేను పెరిగిన ప్రపంచంలో ఉండాలని కోరుకుంటున్నా.

చిన్నప్పటి నుంచి మనం పెరిగే వాతావరణం, మన పెద్దవాళ్ళ ఆచార సాంప్రదాయల్ని చూస్తూ పెరగటంవళ్ళ కావచ్చు మనలో చాలామందికి దేవుడనేవాడొకడున్నాడు, దేవుడిని పూజించాలి, ప్రతి పండగకి తప్పకుండా గుడికి వెళ్ళాలి లాంటి నమ్మకాలు ఉంటాయి.

నా దృష్టిలో దేవుడు అంటే

అమ్మ నాన్న

అమ్మ నాన్నల ప్రేమ నిస్వార్ధమైనది.

ఈ సృష్టిలో ప్రతి జీవికి మూల కారణం అమ్మ. నవమాసాలు తన కడుపులో మోసి, తన రక్తాన్ని పంచి, నాకు జన్మనిచ్చిన అమ్మ నా దృష్టిలో దైవం. పుట్టిన్నప్పటినుంచి మననే తన ప్రపంచంలా చూస్తూ, మనకి కొంచం అనారోగ్యంగా ఉన్నా చివరికి అన్నం తినటం కూడా మానేసి మన కోసం కళ్ళళ్ళో వత్తులేసుకొని కూర్చుంటూ..ఒకటా రెండా, ఇలా ఎన్నెన్నో త్యాగాలు మనకోసం చేసే అమ్మ మన మొదటి దైవం కావాలి.

మనకి చిన్న దెబ్బ తగలగానే అమ్మ అని అరుస్తాం...కనిపించే ప్రత్యక్ష దైవం అమ్మ.

జీవితంలో తోటివాళ్ళకి ఎంతో కొంత సహాయం చేయటం నాన్న దగ్గిరే చూసి నేర్చుకున్న…

మనం పెరిగి పెద్దై ఒక మంచి స్థితిలొ ఉన్నామంటే నాన్న శ్రమ, భాద్యతలే కారణం...

ఏదడిగినా కాదనకుండా మనకోసం తన పనులు, అవసరాలు ఆపుకొని చేసిపెట్టే నాన్న, మన విజయాలను తన విజయాలుగా చెప్పుకునే నాన్న మనకు రెండో దైవం కావాలి. నా కోసం ఎన్నో అవమానాలు భరించిన అమ్మకి, ముఖ్యంగా నాన్నకి ఒక్కసారి కూడ మనస్పూర్తిగా క్షమాపణలు చెప్పలేదు…

అమ్మమ్మ తాతాయ్య

నా చిన్నతనం, ఇంకా చెప్పాలంటే పదవ తరగతి వరకు అమ్మమ్మ తాతాయ్య వాళ్లతోనే….

అమ్మ నాన్నలతో సమానంగా నన్ను పెంచి పెద్ద చేసిన అమ్మమ్మ తాతాయ్యలు కూడా నాకు దేవుళ్లతో సమానం.

ఉన్నదాంట్లోనే నలుగురితో పంచుకుంటే వచ్చే ఆనందం ఎలా ఉంటుందో వీళ్ళని చూస్తూ పెరిగాను.

చెల్లి బావ

కూతురి కోసం జీవితంలో ఇప్పటికే ఎన్నో త్యాగాలు చేసిన చెల్లి, బావ లో కూడ నాకు దైవత్వం కనిపిస్తుంది.

కష్టకాలంలో వెనకా ముందు అలోచించకుండా డబ్బులు ఇచ్చి ఆదుకున్న నా స్నేహితుడు నాకు దేవుడు.

ఇంకా చాలా మంది చాలా సంధర్భాలలో నాకు సహాయ సహకారాలు అందించారు.

వీళ్ళని నిర్లక్ష్యం చేస్తూ కనిపించని దేవుడికి పూజిస్తే కలిగేది పుణ్యం కాదు...

ముక్కు మీద వందసార్లు గీసుకుంటే దేవుడు కనిపిస్తాడనో, గుడికి వెళ్ళకపోతే మంచి జరగదనో, కనిపించే ప్రతి చెట్టుకి పుట్టకి మొక్కితే పుణ్యం కలగదు..చాలామంది గుడికి వెళ్ళి హుండీలో తోచినవిధంగా నగదు సమర్పిస్తారు...వారిలో ఎంతమంది ఆకలితో ఉన్న ఒక కుర్రాడికి పది రూపాయలు ఒకటికి పది సార్లు అలోచించకుండా ఇవ్వగలరు...నువ్వు చేసే పని వళ్ళ ఎవరికన్న మంచి జరిగితే వాళ్ళకు నువ్వు దేవుడు..అది దైవత్వం అంటే.. అంతే కాని ఎక్కడో ఉన్న తిరుపతో, విజయవాడో, షిర్డీనో ఎంతో ఖర్చులు పెట్టుకోని వెళ్ళి, అక్కడ కానుకగా మళ్ళీ కొంత సమర్పించుకుంటే ఏమొస్తుందో అర్ధం కాదు. ఆ ఖర్చులో కనీసం సగం దానం చేసినా ఎంతో కొంత పుణ్యం కలుగుతుంది. అలాగే నీకు కష్టకాలంలో సహాయం చేసే ఏ వ్యక్తి అయినా నీకు దేవుడితో సమానం.

దేవుడు లేడు, దేవుడిని నమ్మొద్దు అని నేను చెప్పట్లేదు...దేవుడి పేరుతో మూర్ఖత్వంగా ముఢాచారాలను పాటించొద్దు….వీలైతే నలుగురికి సహాయం చెయ్యండి..

Why I Laugh - Dalai Lama

In an excerpt from his new book, My Spiritual Journey, The Dalai Lama shares his belief in the surprising power of laughter and smiles to reach other people, even our enemies.

I Am a Professional Laugher
I have been confronted with many difficulties throughout the course of my life, and my country is going through a critical period. But I laugh often, and my laughter is contagious. When people ask me how I find the strength to laugh now, I reply that I am a professional laugher. Laughing is a characteristic of the Tibetans, who are different in this from the Japanese or the Indians. They are very cheerful, like the Italians, rather than a little reserved, like the Germans or the English.

My cheerfulness also comes from my family. I come from a small village, not a big city, and our way of life is more jovial. We are always amusing ourselves, teasing each other, joking. It’s our habit.

To that is added, as I often say, the responsibility of being realistic. Of course problems are there. But thinking only of the negative aspect doesn’t help to find solutions and it destroys peace of mind. Everything, though, is relative. You can see the positive side of even the worst tragedies if you adopt a holistic perspective. If you take the negative as absolute and definitive, however, you increase your worries and anxiety, whereas by broadening the way you look at a problem you understand what is bad about it, but you accept it. This attitude comes to me, from my practice and from Buddhist philosophy, which help me enormously.

Take the loss of our country, for example. We are a stateless people, and we must confront adversity along with many painful circumstances in Tibet itself. Nevertheless, such experiences also bring many benefits.
As for me, I’ve been homeless for half a century. But I have found a large number of new homes throughout the vast world. If I had remained at the Potala, I don’t think I would have had the chance to meet so many personalities, so many heads of state in Asia, Taiwan, the United States, and Europe, popes as well as many famous scientists and economists.

The life of exile is an unfortunate life, but I have always tried to cultivate a happy state of mind, appreciating the opportunities this existence without a settled home, far from all protocol, has offered me. This way I have been able to preserve my inner peace.

I Love the Smile, Unique to Humans
If we are content just to think that compassion, rationality, and patience are good, that is not actually enough to develop these qualities. Difficulties provide the occasion to put them into practice. Who can make such occasions arise? Certainly not our friends, but rather our enemies, for they are the ones who pose the most problems. So that we truly want to progress on the path, we must regard our enemies as our best teachers.

For whoever holds love and compassion in high esteem, the practice of tolerance is essential, and it requires an enemy. We must be grateful to our enemies, then, because they help us best engender a serene mind! Anger and hatred are the real enemies that we must confront and defeat, not the “enemies” who appear from time to time in our lives.

Of course it is natural and right that we all want to have friends. I often say jokingly that a truly selfish person must be altruistic! You have to take care of others, of their well-being, by helping them and serving them, to have even more friends and make more smiles blossom. The result? When you yourself need help, you will find all you need! On the other hand, if you neglect others’ happiness, you will be the loser in the long run. Is friendship born of arguments, anger, jealousy, and unbridled competition? I don’t think so. Only affection produces authentic friends.

In contemporary materialistic society, if you have money and power you have the impression of having a lot of friends. But they aren’t your friends; they are the friends of your money and power. If you lose your wealth and influence you will have trouble finding those people again.
Unfortunately, so long as things are going well, we think we can get along by ourselves. However, as our situation and health decline, we soon realize how wrong we were. That is when we understand who really helps us. To prepare ourselves for such a time, by making true friends who are useful when we need them most, we must cultivate altruism.

As for me, I always want more friends. I love smiles, and my wish is to see more smiles, real smiles, for there are many kinds—sarcastic, artificial, or diplomatic. Some smiles don’t arouse any satisfaction, and some even engender suspicion or fear. An authentic smile, though, arouses an authentic feeling of freshness, and I think the smile belongs only to human beings. If we want those smiles, we must create the reasons that make them appear.

Disability no barrier for Bhavana Botta

Every mother loves her kids more than her own life. One can't express the feeling of a mother when she hears her baby starts speaking and calls her 'Amma'(meaning Mother in telugu). She loves to see her kids play like other kids do. But, Bhavana Botta can't speak or walk like a normal child. She has Athetoid Cerebral Palsy; meaning, she has never spoken or walked in her life. Imagine the pain that Bhavan's mother, KalpanaRao, would have gone through. But she never gave up when doctors diagnosed Bhavana with Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. Bhavana is now a successful entrepreneur. She has set up a boutique called Saahaagika, which sells organic cotton clothes, (supporting the cotton farmer community) and handmade craft. Bhavan's dedication and her mother's efforts to raise her child is truly a great inspiration to everyone of us.

A Very Touching Story

Received this through an email from a friend.

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.
He passed the first interview, the director did the last interview, made the last decision.
The director discovered from the CV that the youth’s academic achievements were excellent all the way, from the secondary school until the postgraduate research, never had a year when he did not score.

The director asked, “Did you obtain any scholarships in school?” the youth answered “none”.

The director asked, ” Was it your father who paid for your school fees?” The youth answered, “My father passed away when I was one year old, it was my mother who paid for my school fees.
The director asked, ” Where did your mother work?” The youth answered, “My mother worked as clothes cleaner. The director requested the youth to show his hands. The youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect.

The director asked, ” Have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before?” The youth answered, “Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books. Furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me.

The director said, “I have a request. When you go back today, go and clean your mother’s hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.

The youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother felt strange, happy but with mixed feelings, she showed her hands to the kid.

The youth cleaned his mother’s hands slowly. His tear fell as he did that. It was the first time he noticed that his mother’s hands were so wrinkled, and there were so many bruises in her hands. Some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water.
This was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee. The bruises in the mother’s hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation, academic excellence and his future.

After finishing the cleaning of his mother hands, the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother.

That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.

Next morning, the youth went to the director’s office.

The Director noticed the tears in the youth’s eyes, asked: “Can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house?”

The youth answered,” I cleaned my mother’s hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes’

The Director asked,”please tell me your feelings.”

The youth said, Number 1, I know now what is appreciation. Without my mother, there would not the successful me today. Number 2, by working together and helping my mother, only I now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done. Number 3, I have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship.

The director said, “This is what I am looking for to be my manager. I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the sufferings of
others to get things done, and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life. You are hired.

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates. Every employee worked diligently and as a team. The company’s performance improved tremendously.
A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, would develop “entitlement mentality” and would always put himself first. He would be ignorant of his parent’s efforts. When he starts work, he assumes that every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a manager, he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others. For this kind of people, who may be good academically, may be successful for a while, but eventually would not feel sense of achievement. He will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more. If we are this kind of protective parents, are we really showing love or are we destroying the kid instead?

You can let your kid live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn piano, watch a big screen TV. But when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love them in a right way. You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will grow gray, same as the mother of that young person. The most important thing is your kid learns how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty and learns the ability to work with others to get things done.

Time for India's children

Dear friends across India,

As families around the world buy holiday gifts, millions of Indian children are slaving away in brutal conditions to produce their presents and decorations. But in days India’s Parliament could pass a ban on child labour, and stop their suffering.

Children as young as five are snatched up by traffickers and forced to work 12 hour days in cramped sweatshops, often not knowing if they'll ever see their parents again. A bill to ban underage labour is on the table in Parliament, and stands to get majority support. But it's been stalled by a fuss over another issue. In days child rights groups will meet Parliamentary leaders to bust the logjam, and if tens of thousands of us from India and across the world strengthen their hand, we can get this critical law agreed.

India's children should be getting an education, not slaving away to profit heartless corporations. Sign the petition to get Parliamentarians to stop their squabbles and agree a ban child labour under 14 years and harmful work under 18 years:

Child labour is a global issue -- 215 million children around the world work in mines, quarries, and factories. More than half are them are living under threat of violence. Chocolate, clothes, jewelry, electronics we use, and even Christmas and New Year decorations – all get produced by these children.

India has one of the highest number of child labourers in the world. Local child welfare groups are lobbying the Indian Parliament to pass a proposed amendment to the child labour laws that would ban all forms of child labour under 14 years, all harmful work under 18 years, eliminate school fees, create stipends for girls, and more stringent enforcement of child labour laws -- all measures that would put children back into school, and set a path out of poverty for India's most vulnerable.

We only have a few days to save these children from a bleak future -- Parliament can decide this week whether a child's place is in school or in slavery. Sign the petition to MPs, then send this widely:

A humble request to smokers

Smoking is the single biggest avoidable risk a person can take in one's entire lifetime. And yet, millions of intelligent people choose to take that risk every single day of their lives.(More here)

Tobacco use was killing 5.4 million people every year, due to lung cancer, heart problems and other diseases and tobacco was the main risk factor for six of the eight leading causes of deaths in the world. The scene was more alarming as 80 per cent of tobacco related deaths would occur in the developing countries in future, according to an estimate. (More here)

I am not begging any one to quit smoking. I just want all smokers to realize how they are creating a dangerous environment to their family, friends. Passive smoking (second hand smoking and third hand smoking) is as dangerous as active smoking. The dangerous particles in secondhand smoke can linger in the air for hours or even longer. Third hand smoke clings to hair, skin, clothes, furniture, drapes, walls, bedding, carpets, dust, vehicles and other surfaces, even long after smoking has stopped. Infants, children and nonsmoking adults may be at risk of tobacco-related health problems when they inhale, ingest or touch substances containing third hand smoke.

Passive smoking poses a potential health hazard to nonsmokers who are exposed to it, especially children. Among the victims, two lakh were children who were exposed to passive smoking. Out of five tobacco related deaths, one was due to passive smoking. As the number of smokers increased, the healthy population also got affected equally. I sometimes feel that the smokers don’t give a damn about their kids, family. I see a lot of people smoke in the presence of small children and do not seem to understand the risks.

Please don’t cause inconvenience to others, be it your friends, family or public. Please ask if any of them are not comfortable with smoking and avoid smoking in their presence. If any smoker comes across this post, it is my sincere and humble request to him/her to make your home or work place smoke free and protect your family and friends, and never smoke in front of any kid. Please understand that everyone has the right to breathe fresh air.

ఈ చిన్నారుల పేర్లు శ్రావణి, అర్చన. వీరిది మహబూబ్‌నగర్‌ జిల్లా చిన్నచింతకుంట మండలం అప్పంపల్లి గ్రామం. శ్రావణి నాగర్‌కర్నూల్‌ ప్రభుత్వ గురుకుల పాఠశాలలో ఎనిమిదో తరగతి చదివేది. చదువులో చురుగ్గా ఉండేది. సుమారు పదినెలల క్రితం సెలవుల కోసం ఇంటికి వచ్చింది. తల నెప్పిగా ఉంది నాన్నా... అంటే కసాయి తండ్రి ఈ చిన్నారికి తన కిడ్నీ వ్యాధికి సంబంధించిన మాత్రలిచ్చాడు. ఇవ్వడమే కాకుండా మరికొన్నింటినీ ప్యాక్‌ చేసి బ్యాగులో పెట్టి పంపించాడు. హాస్టల్‌కు వెళ్లిన తర్వాత తలనెప్పి వచ్చినప్పుడల్లా ఆ చిన్నారి ఈ మాత్రల్నే వాడింది. క్రమంగా పాపకు నోరు పడిపోయింది. తర్వాత వినికిడి శక్తీ కోల్పోయింది. గురుకుల పాఠశాల యాజమాన్యమూ నిర్లక్ష్యం వహించింది. పాపం జీవితం నాశనమైంది. ప్రస్తుతం ఆ పాపకు చదువుకోవాలని ఉన్నా... ఆరోగ్యం సహకరించడం లేదు.

అక్కకు వచ్చిన దుస్థితే ఎనిమిది నెలల తర్వాత చెల్లెలు శ్రావణికీ వచ్చింది. పదేళ్ల శ్రావణి అమ్మమ్మ ఊరిలో ఐదో తరగతి చదివేది. రెండు నెలల క్రితం నాన్న ఆంజనేయులు ఇచ్చిన మాత్రల ప్రభావంతో అక్క అర్చన లాగే బధిరురాలైంది.
అప్పంపల్లికి చెందిన వెంకటమ్మ తన కూతురు అరుణను పక్క గ్రామమైన బండ్రవల్లికి చెందిన ఆంజనేయులుకు ఇచ్చి వివాహం జరిపించింది. వీరికి ముగ్గురు ఆడపిల్లలు, ఓ బాబు. అయితే ఆంజనేయులుకు కూతుళ్లపై మమకారం లేదు. సరిగా చూసుకునేవాడేకాదు.
వారిని చదివించడం కూడా వృథా అని భావించేవాడు. మేనమామ సహకారంతో శ్రావణి గురుకుల పాఠశాలలో చేరింది. అర్చనను అమ్మమ్మ చేరదీసింది. ఎలాగోలా సాగుతున్న వీరి జీవితాన్ని తండ్రే చిదిమేశాడు. తన కిడ్నీ వ్యాధి మాత్రలతో పిల్లల బంగారు భవిష్యత్తును చీకటిమయం చేశాడు.

సోషల్‌ మీడియాలో లక్ష|లాది మంది వివిధ విషయాలను షేర్‌ చేస్తుంటారు కదా... ఈ చిన్నారుల దీన గాథను కూడా షేర్‌ చేస్తే అది ఎందరికో చేరుతుంది. ఇందులో వైద్యులుండవచ్చు. మానవతావాదులుండవచ్చు. కష్టాల్లో, బాధల్లో ఉన్న వారికి సాయం చేయడం మనిషిగా మన ధర్మం. మన దేశంలో అపర కుబేరులున్నారు... కటిక దరిద్రులూ ఉన్నారు. చనిపోయిన తర్వాత ఈ ఆస్తులు, అంతస్తులూ ఏమీ వెంటరావు. కానీ... ఉన్నవాళ్లు తమకు తోచిన రీతిలో ఇలాంటి అభాగ్యులకు సాయం చేయడం మర్చిపోవద్దు. మీకు తెలిసిన మానవతావాదులైన వైద్యులుంటే వారికి విషయం చెప్పండి. వారికి ఉచితంగా వైద్యం అందేలా చూడమనండి. లేదంటే ఈ చిన్నారులు జీవితాంతం మాటకు దూరమవుతారు. మనం ఒక్క ఐదు నిమిషాలు మాడ్లాడలేకుండా ఉండగలమా. వినకుండా ఉండగలమా... ఒక్కసారి ఆలోచించంచండి. వీరిని ఆదుకోండి.

This is the story of two unfortunate sisters Sravani and Archana from Mahabubnagar Appampalli. The elder sister Archana was studying in Nagarkurnool gurukul school till 8th standard and came to visit her father. Her father does not like his daughters and does not take care of them. He always felt it unnecessary to send them to school. She complained of a headache
and her father gave her some medicines which he was using for his kidney problems. He also packed some of those medicines and sent them with her. Archana used
to use the same medicines whenever she had a headache and started loosing her speech. The school management were also unattentive and finally she lost her
hearing ability too. Now she can't speak, hear.

Her sister Sravani was being looked after by her grandmother and studied till 5th standard when she too fell victim to her father's tablets. She too can't hear right now. We share a lot of pointless stuff every day that actually doesn't benefit anyone. Please share this so that some one willing to help these kids in any form.

College Fee for a student

B Ravi, a resident of Vivekananda Nagar, Kukatpally is currently pursuing his intermediate second year at NRI College, Kukatpally. He scored 500+ in SSC. He cleans cars and earns money to pay college fees. One of the residents of Vivekananda Nagar has been supporting him to some extent. Ravi still needs 13,000/- for his second year remaining fee. Ravi may need to discontinue his part time job as he needs to focus on EAMCET exam. He came from telugu medium background. If someone in or around Kukatpally area can provide help in teaching Physics/Chemistry which would also helpful for him. The college provides EAMCET material at an extra cost of 2600/-. He is not in a position to pay for it.

Blood Donation

Every year India requires about 4 Crore units of blood, out of which only a meager 40 Lakh units of blood are available. Every two seconds someone needs blood. More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day. If just 1% of people donate blood regularly, there will be no blood shortage. Human Body just takes 24 hours to generate the equivalent amount of blood which one donates.(Source: friends2support)

A donor is asked to fill a form with specific questions about his/her medical history to make sure that donating blood is not hazardous to his/her health.
A healthy person can donate 1 unit (~300ml) of blood every 3-4 months.
Donors are advised to stay at the donation site for 10-15 minutes after donating.
Donors are advised to avoid the following after donation.

No driving or traveling till half an hour of donation.
No weightlifting or workout at least for a day.
Avoid any kind of physical stress for 24 hours at least.

Joy Of Giving Week

'Joy Of Giving Week' is a volunteer driven initiative hosted in GiveIndia and it aims at bringing together people from all walks of life to engage in acts of giving in the form of money, time, skills or just simple acts of kindness. It is a platform for all across the country to celebrate the joy of giving. It is to be held from October 2 to October 8 across India.

Our farmers are dying, to hell with the World Cup

Yes, you read it right; to hell with the World Cup; to hell with the celebrations; to hell with all the free land and money being showered by different governments on the players. How can I jump, scream, have gallons of beer and cheer for the nation when a few kilometres away the farmers and feeders of my country are taking their own lives in hordes?

Do you know that, on average, 47 farmers have been committing suicide every single day in the past 16 years in our shining India — the next economic power, progressive with nine per cent growth?

Last month, on March 5, Friday evening, when Bangalore's watering holes were getting filled up, when all the DJs were blaring out deafening music, when we were busy discussing India's chances at the World Cup, sitting in CCDs and Baristas — just 100 km away from Bangalore, Swamy Gowda and Vasanthamma, a young farmer couple, hanged themselves, leaving their three very young children to fend for themselves or, most likely, die of malnutrition.

Why did they do it? Were they fighting? No. Were they drunkards? No. Did they have incurable diseases? No! Then WHY? Because they were unable to repay a loan of Rs 80,000 (a working IT couple's one month salary? 2-3 months EMI?) for years, which had gradually increased to Rs. 1.2 lakh. Because they knew that now they would never be able to pay it back. Because they were hurt. Hurt by our government which announced a huge reduction in import duty for silk in this year's budget (from 30 per cent to 5 per cent).They were struggling silk farmers and instead of help from the government, they get this! Decrease in import duty means the markets will now be flooded with cheap Chinese silk (as everything else!) and our own farmers will be left in the lurch.

On average, 17,000 farmers have been committing suicide every year, for the past 15 years on the trot. Can you believe it? Most of us wouldn't know this fact. Why? Because, our great Indian media, the world's biggest media, are not interested in reporting this! Why? Because they are more interested in covering fashion week extravaganzas. They are more interested in ‘why team India was not practising when Pakistanis were sweating it out in stadium on the eve of the match?' They are more interested in Poonam Pandey.

The media are supposed to be the third eye of democracy and also called the fourth estate, but now they have become real estate. Pure business.

So any attention from the media is out of the question. Who is left then? The government? But we all know how it works. The other day, I was passing by Vidhan Soudha in Bangalore and happened to read the slogan written at the entrance, “Government work is god's work”. Now I know why our government has left all its work to god!

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa announced plots for all the players. But land? In Bangalore? You must be kidding, Mr. C.M.. So he retracts and now wants to give money. But where will it come from? Taxes, yours and mine. Don't the poor farmers need the land or money more than those players who are already earning in crores?

A government-owned bank will give you loan at six per cent interest rate if you are buying a Mercedes but if a poor farmer wants to buy a tractor, do you know how much it is charging him? Fifteen per cent! Look at the depths of inequality. Water is Rs. 15 a litre and a SIM card is for free! For how long can we bite the hand that is feeding us? The recent onion price fiasco was just a trailer. Picture abhi baaki hai doston!

“Tell me the weight of a snowflake,” a coal-mouse asked a wild dove.

“Nothing more than nothing,” was the answer.

“In that case, I must tell you a marvelous story,” the coal-mouse said.

“I sat on the branch of a fir, close to its trunk, when it began to snow – not heavily, not in a raging blizzard – no, just like in a dream, without a wound and without any violence. Since I did not have anything better to do, I counted the snowflakes settling on the twigs and needles of my branch. Their number was exactly 3,742,952. When the 3,742,953rd dropped onto the branch, nothing more than nothing, as you say – the branch broke off.”

Having said that, the coal-mouse flew away.

The dove, since Noah’s time an authority on the matter, thought about the story for a while, and finally said to herself, “Perhaps there is only one person’s voice lacking for peace to come to the world.”

The Power of Giving

Giving impacts our lives in many ways, all of it positive, the most important being that it adds value both to our life and to the one who receives from us. But this positive impact happens only when we give selflessly, without any expectation. Quite often, we carry the burden of expectation even in our giving. We often feel terrible when a friend to whom we have given a gift, forgets our birthday. We expect to be remembered because we have given. This expectation negates the effect of giving, and affects our future relationship with this friend. This is not practcing 'giving' in the way it should be practiced.

An incident Subroto Bagchi (CEO Mindtree) writes about his mother illustrates wholehearted giving beautifully. Bagchi writes of how his mother after finishing her household chores for her big family, would, equipped only with kitchen implements, work very hard to create a garden in the small patch of land in the government quarters where they were housed. It did not bother her that she would not be around to enjoy the benefit of her hard labour or see the flowering plants, for by then they would have moved house. For her the joy was in creating a beautiful environment and giving of herself with zero expectation.

Such joyous giving does not come easy to most of us and has to be practiced. Giving has to become a way of life and those who don't recognise its inherent presence in their lives, must learn to do so. One of the ways to do this is to think less about our feelings and ourselves and more about others: praise your co-worker, give up a seat for the tired person in the bus, smile at the man selling pens in the local train, share a cup of tea with the household help, help the kids kick a ball, leave the public toilet clean for the next person, cook your partner's favourite meal. Numerous are the ways in which we learn to give and the result would be the same : to enrich our lives and to turn us into more contented individuals. When we practice 'giving' consciously and constantly, we will reach that stage of giving where we give totally of ourselves with no expectations and like Subroto Bagchi's mother we would be able to embrace death courageously in the satisfaction of having lived a full and fulfilled life. Let us "Go Kiss the World".

Why do we give?

It might seem absurd to ask the question “why do we give?”, now when one has been writing about various aspects of giving for a month. Is it necessary to understand our motive for giving ? Is giving a learnt behaviour or is it an inherent one ? Does motivation for giving stem from a common cause or does it vary across communities and cultures ? Do we need to answer these questions? Is it not more important to continue giving ?

To answer the last question first, it is definitely essential to continue giving. Discovering the answers to the other questions will help us to sustain our giving. We have in other posts presented the view that ‘giving’ is inherent and instinctive. Witness a newborn mother with her child, whether in a 5 star hospital or in a remote village at home, there is a spontaneous joy and an immediate need to protect and nurture. That is ‘giving’. A child grows up with this basic desire to share and the experiences of sharing and giving, when positive, increases this and he / she grows up to be a ‘giving’ person. The positive experience one is talking about is what economist James Andreoni calls the ‘warm-glow theory’., where he argues that internal motives for giving are more important than having a building named after one, or saving on tax by contributing to charity. The feeling that one has contributed towards making the world a better place, is what leads to the glow and so one continues to give.

That is why we give : to cherish, to nurture, to protect, to better, circumstances, people, the world. Indigenous cultures have understood this concept very well and not for nothing is it said “It takes a whole village to raise a child” (African proverb).

Last day of the Joy of Giving Week

The final day of Joy of Giving Week, and it was also Gandhi Jayanthi.

A group of students from IIIT went to Chavadi Poor Students' Ashram on the evening of Oct 2nd.

Chavadi was started for the welfare of poor, downtrodden and orphaned children of the society in the age group of 5 to 14 years, by providing them free food, shelter, clothing and education as well as vocational training including medical aid with a main aim to create an awareness among them that the education is the fundamental right of every child.

They advertise in newspapers to admit kids. It houses around 40 semi-orphan and poor students.

We had an introduction session where each kid introduced himself to everyone and then we introduced ourselves to them. Some kids danced to some songs, some kids drew some paintings. We spent a lot of time interacting with the kids and it was a very nice feeling. Finally, we distributed Samosas and Jalebis to the kids. We had to leave early as they have to study for their exams which starts from Monday, Oct 4th.

The secret of happiness lies in the joy of giving and sharing. As a child, we all have experienced this wonderful feeling of receiving chocolates and gifts from elders and friends. Even now, a lot of happiness is associated with receiving our birthday gifts, howsoever we grow up in years!

But the joy of giving something to someone who needs it is incomparable to that little flutter the joy of receiving something creates in our hearts. You will agree with me, if you have indulged in this feeling sometime, am sure you have!

If Mahatma Gandhi were alive today, his message to us would be to give and continue to give. Let us pledge to do so both today and for all the days to come. Giving can and should continue even when the Joy of Giving Week has come to an end.

Day2-6 of Joy of Giving Week

Day2:
I gave an amount of 200/- to my friend Nitin for the cause he likes to support. He bought some fruits and distributed them to the children at nearby slums.

Day3:
I took my friend Sai Krishna to KFC restaurant and we had a nice dinner.

Day4:
I gave away 2 pairs of my shoes to the housekeeping guys at our campus hostel.

Day5:
Samvedana (a team from IIIT) has organized a collection drive at the campus to pool in some donations for this cause. I donated a little amount for that cause. If anyone of you wishes to donate money for that, please follow the instructions given at the link.

Day6:
Students from IIIT collect some clothes in order to distribute them to people when there is a need. I donated a pair of clothes.

Generosity is the habit of giving something freely without expecting anything in return. That something can be a nice word, a smile, a warm greeting or a few minutes from your routine. I would like to share a stroy involving Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi went from city to city, village to village collecting funds for the Charkha Sangh. During one of his tours he addressed a meeting in Orissa. After his speech a poor old woman got up. She was bent with age, her hair was grey and her clothes were in tatters. The volunteers tried to stop her, but she fought her way to the place where Gandhiji was sitting.

“I must see him,” she insisted and going up to Gandhiji touched his feet. Then from the folds of her sari she brought out a copper coin and placed it at his feet. Gandhiji picked up the copper coin and put it away carefully. The Charkha Sangh funds were under the charge of Jamnalal Bajaj.

He asked Gandhiji for the coin but Gandhiji refused. “I keep cheques worth thousands of rupees for the Charkha Sangh,” Jamnalal Bajaj said laughingly “yet you won’t trust me with a copper coin.” “This copper coin is worth much more than those thousands,” Gandhiji said. “If a man has several lakhs and he gives away a thousand or two, it doesn’t mean much. But this coin was perhaps all that the poor woman possessed. She gave me all she had. That was very generous of her. What a great sacrifice she made. That is why I value this copper coin more than a crore of rupees.”

Day 1 of the 'Joy of Giving Week'

As a part of my plans for the Joy of Giving Week, I went to an NGO on the first day of JGW to spend some time and donate something. As I was in a dilemma which NGO to choose for the donation, my friend Prateek sent me the details of an NGO called CHERISH(Commitment for Health,Education & Rehabilitation of the Impowerished and Struggling Humans).

My 1st gift was a donation of Rs.1700 ( My donation Rs. 500 + M Rajasekhar Rs. 500 + Avinesh Rs. 500 + V Sreekanth Rs. 200 ) to CHERISH.

About CHERISH:
CHERISH interacts with street, slum and working children. It mainly concentrates on a comprehensive help for the children in all ways with Commitment for health, education and rehabilitation as a complete program for the homeless and unprotected children aged 4yrs to maturity (skill development stage). It offers shelter, medical assistance, nutritional supplement, education, vocational training and character re-building. The children are taught through non formal, formal and condensed methods to care for themselves in a normal way and given guidance. Older children are given responsibilities based up on their propensities and talent.

About the founder:
Mrs. Neelima Simhadri is an MBA graduate from Vijayawada. She used to work in a company in Vijayawada in the HR department. During this period she was associated with few NGOs. After her marriage, she relocated to Hyderabad and started CHERISH in 2007. She is a homemaker and has a daughter.

Current donors:

Kingfisher sometimes provides them some provisions like dal and rice.
People who do a onetime donations – during bithdays, anniversary, etc.
A doctor named Pradeep Roy visits the place whenever the kids are sick. He works in Sri J.R. Clinic, Attapur.

Future Plans:
Mrs. Neelima is constructing a building near Budvel. She plans to re-locate Cherish to this place in April 2011. She hopes to cut down about 10k in her monthly expenditure by moving to this place. She desires to increase the number of children after moving there.

Concerns about the place:

The expenses are currently met by Neelima’s husband who is employed and by adhoc donations. We couldn’t see a financial plan in place to sustain the home in the long run.
Mrs. Neelima doesn’t have much support from family/friends and is running this more-or-less single-handedly. There is too much dependency on a single person here.
The current place is in a very bad shape and has limitations in offering children an conducive environment for all round development. The neighbors also do not encourage the home.
