Best Paraben Free Self Tanners

I love the look of a healthy, bronze glow (not leather or fake like the tanning booth addicted "Tan Mom" you've been hearing about on the news lately). However, we all know that a natural tan is not all it's cracked up to be. If you go in the sun and get a tan, it means that the sun has damaged your skin and actually harmed the cells.

That said, I am super duper pale and the only shade that I get in the sun is a beautiful lobster red. I rely on self tanners to give me a summer bronze glow.

I have tried so many tanners over the years. Some of been horrendous--pumpkin orange, flaky, smelly, uneven, blotchy, etc.

Others have been great, but expensive (Kardashian Glamour Tan comes to mind). Here are my top 5 sunless tanners free of parabens, phthalates and the other nasties. I have tried every one of these and these happen to be the best, I have found, based on my personal experience.

Please note that the tanning agent is called Dihydroxyacetone. This is considered a safe ingredient even though it sounds sketchy. It is the basis for all self-tanners, natural & organic or chemical-laden.

#1 L'Oreal Sublime Bronze Luminous Bronzer Self Tanning Lotion. Are the ingredients fabulous? Not so much. There is propylene glycol, PEGs and fragrance. However, there are no phthalates, parabens, DMDM hydantoin or other super nasty ingredients. This happens to be the product that works best for me, lasts the longest, is extremely goof proof, and a great price. I find this one at Target for less than $10. You can also buy it for less online at drugstore.com. I also have to say that this one has the least offensive smell, goes on more quickly than any of the others, and lasts the longest. I applied some on Saturday and haven't had to reapply and any fading has been minimal and even.

#2 Kardashian Glamour Tan ranks second on my list. I really adore this product. It is getting harder and harder to come by these days, as it isn't easy to find at Sephora. Ulta usually has it. I love how it gives a truly natural tan, but it does have its downsides: the cost is double what I like to spend. It is clear and I do prefer a tinted, instant action product. Read my full review here. The price has come down over the past 2 years, but it is still in the $20 range.

#3 Nature's Gate Sunless Tanner is another affordable option. While Nature's Gate is a "natural" brand, it really doesn't have a superior ingredients list to the L'Oreal tanner. In fact, the list of ingredients in much longer. This one comes in at under $10 as well. This one gives a nice color, although it isn't as bronze/tan as the L'Oreal on my pale skin. It takes about 3 applications of lotion to give me the same level of tan that one application of L'Oreal tanner will give me.

#4 True Natural Cosmetics All Natural Anti-Aging Self Tanner is available at drugstore.com for $14 and is another sound choice. Ingredients-wise, the list on this one is the purest of the bunch. It also delivers a deeper glow right off the bat compared to #3 and #5. The color isn't as natural of a tan as the other 4. This one may work better on you if you have more yellow in your skin, because it isn't the best of the bunch on my pale, rosy skin. However, do not rule this one out since everyone is different. I do love the ingredients and texture!

#5 Lavera Glow & Go rounds out my top 5 list of self tanners. It gives a natural bronze glow--on me a bit more golden than bronze--and is lightweight. I love the shimmer, but the spray doesn't give me the control I like, so having an "oops" moment is much more likely. While this is typically $23 or so, I did just spy some online in a two pack for $20 at Love True Natural. Please note, I haven't ordered from here before, so I cannot tell you that it's a great place to order based on personal experience.

Final Thoughts: There are many brands on the market now claiming to be the best, most natural sunless tanners. They are charging $40 and upwards. I'd like to reiterate that the key ingredient in all of them is the same, so do not feel you need to splurge to have a good "fake" tan!

Amazing Base is Truly Amazing!

If you have been a regular reader for the past nearly five years that Chic & Green has been around, you know I can be extra tough on higher end brands. I regularly state that you do not always have to spend more money to get a better products, because that is something I truly believe. When I write reviews of items that aren't super duper affordable, you know I am extra critical.

I recently was sent some items to try from a company I've purchased from before, Jane Iredale.

I've been a fan of the line for a couple of years, having splurged on both the liquid and pressed foundation before. I am also a fan of mineral makeup in general. When I was approached about trying this product, I was happy because I love the brand, but figured I'd be writing a review that said it's not worth the splurge.

I was sent the Amazing Base SPF20 Loose Mineral Foundation in Bisque. First of all, Bisque is just the perfect shade for my complexion. It tones down the ruddiness and looks completely natural.

What really impressed me off the bat before I even applied it is the fact that this product is recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation. It also has earned stellar reviews across the Internet. I honestly thought that I would like this, but not anymore than I like my loose foundations from Everyday Minerals and Alima Pure. I was wrong.

You see, there is an SPF of 20 in this. Normally I would scoff at this and think that the protection isn't adequate enough in a cosmetics product. I regularly use a mineral-based broad spectrum sunscreen. However, as it gets warmer, my skin gets more oily. On Saturday, I skipped the lotion sunscreen and just used this powder. I was truly amazed because I made a MAJOR skin care blunder that goes against every bit of skin care advice I have ever given.

Saturday morning, I was in a hurry to get the boys ready for their opening day of baseball. Ben had a morning game and Nick had an afternoon game. I slathered them in sunscreen (right now it is Jason Sunbrellas for them) and was running out the door, got in the car, and realized I didn't apply sunscreen to my arms and legs.

After sitting out in the bright sun all day, I could feel my skin get hotter and sensitive to the touch. My upper chest area, arms and lower leg area under my capris got burned. Even the tops of my feet were affected--you can see the pale skin from under my sandal straps and the pink where the skin was exposed. Lovely.

Amazingly, when I got home my face and neck (where I applied the Jane Iredale Amazing Base SPF 20) were completely unaffected by the sun. No change in color at all. It protected my skin all day long.

Even more impressive is the fact that I was feeling hot and sweaty in the 85 degree heat with the sun beating on me and my makeup stayed put all day long without tackiness, stickiness, running, or color oxidation. The makeup also felt lightweight, as if I was wearing no makeup at all.

This makeup is truly fabulous. The ingredients are wonderful and the product is free of dyes, oil, talc, or harmful preservatives. This is water resistant, so it'll come in very handy all summer long. It is also recommended for even the most sensitive types of skin, such as those with rosacea or eczema. The best part for me, though, is the proven (on me) effective SPF 20 to guard against UVA and UVB rays.

I also would personally label this as a treatment makeup because it is chock full of skin-benefiting ingredients such as plankton extract, algae, and pomegranate extract.

While this isn't a budget product by any means (it is $42), it really is a product that serves multiple purposes. It can be your makeup, facial sunscreen, finishing powder, etc. all in one swoop. Will I repurchase this when it is gone? Without a doubt, yes. This will be a splurge I allow. You see, I spend so little on skin care since I use super affordable, yet effective natural products that I can apply that savings to something fabulous from Jane Iredale.

I have a couple other things from them that I will review soon, but I just had to tell you about this one after seeing how it protected my skin over the weekend.

This is going to be my staple foundation. On a letter grading scale, Jane Iredale Amazing Base SPF 20 earns an easy A+. I have been impressed by many products over the years, but this one really stands out as a product that I truly believe in and can recommend to all beyond a shadow of a doubt.

One last thing I need to mention--something else that is worth noting is that when you receive an order from Jane Iredale, you'll receive your package adorned with a sprig of fresh cut lavender. That adds a really unexpected touch!

Purple!

Well hello there, readers! I apologize for this brief hiatus. I've been busy over the past couple days on a work-related project and with gardening. I love this time of year--flower planting, mulch spreading, etc. It's a time when everything starts to bloom and the sun shines....

I love to mix up my colors. I have lots of pinks from my azaleas and petunias, yellow snapdragons, red geraniums, and more. My favorite flower color this season is purple. I have a hanging basket with deep purple petunias and some purple pansies planted.

I have never been one to say that you need to spend lots of money on beauty products. In fact, it is something I have wrestled with for years.

Back in the day when I was working full time in the cosmetics industry, I was a star seller. I sold several hundred dollars (thousands during gift with purchase or holidays) in skin care and cosmetics with each and every shift. I always exceeded my goals and could turn a simple cleanser purchase into a 6 item purchase with ease. That was when I was too young to know any better, quite frankly. I was, in many ways, a robot in terms of memorizing what I was taught at training and how to push that $70 bottle of Fruition Extra (the hot seller at the time; and it was that price all those years ago) to customers.

Sure I used the high end stuff. I received it in my gratis. All of the companies gave us products to use. What was I using on my own skin, though? I'd do kitchen skin care....banana masks, sugar and olive oil scrubs, etc. mixed in with the expensive stuff.

And, do you know what? It works. Affordable skin care is truly just as good as the pricy stuff and do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

I think that's one reason I sold my own line at such affordable prices (under $20). I wanted to provide a good value for the money--good products and prices which were fair for all of us.

If you want to spend the extra money, then by all means, go for it. If you are a budget savvy gal or are just trying to cut costs, know that you can spend very little money on your beauty routine and still look great. I have recently gone back to my tried and true super natural routine. I don't like to spend more than I need to and my skin has improved even more since I went even more natural with fewer ingredients.

A friend recently asked me what I was using. You see, I have been selling 100% Pure and was using it all. Then I started going back to my own trial and error with super duper affordable, natural products that are less expensive and my skin has responded really well. I just can't justify spending $19 on a toner or $32 on a lotion when there are options out there that are just as good or better for less. That is not to say 100% Pure isn't great. It is. I will still probably continue to buy a few things even if I am no longer going to be selling it. I just don't feel right saying that you need to spend that money if there are more affordable options--especially if I am not using the line much anymore myself. That just wouldn't be right.

SO, this is what I am currently using and am super happy with--

For facial cleansing, I use the oil cleansing method. You can use a blend of natural oils or just plain extra virgin olive oil. Right now, I am using straight grapeseed oil. It is $4.99 for a 16 ounce bottle at Wegmans! I use this to get my makeup off, then I follow with Aunt Nancy's Carrot & Goat's Milk fragrance free bar ($6).
I love toners, but some of them are ridiculously overpriced. I recommend Witch Hazel Distillate. You can get a large 8 ounce bottle for less than $10 that will last months and months. It is an alcohol and fragrance free product that soothes, cools, and removes last traces of residue from cleansing or environment.
I am currently using Reviva Labs Firming Eye Serum. It has DMAE, alpha lipoic acid, and is gentle! It is under $11 and is full of lovely ingredients which rival $75 creams.
And I am madly in love with a new to me night cream. It is also $11 and will last me several months. The brand is called Orjene Organics and the product is CoQ10 Olive Vitale Age Recovery Night Treatment. This is toxin free and contains so many great ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, CoQ10, Olive Squalane, and a host of vitamins! You really need to try this one, ladies (and gents)! It sells for $10.69!
For the body, I am also using Aunt Nancy's soap in the shower and I follow with coconut oil to moisturize my arms and legs.
My AM moisturizer is my sunscreen. While this is the most expensive skin care product I am using at $15.95, it is definitely the most important! I use Badger Unscented SPF 30 under my makeup. A good SPF is the best anti-aging product there is.
I eat lots of berries. There are so many great antioxidants in them and they will help brighten your skin, naturally.

I love cucumbers for skin care. There's something so calming and cooling about putting them on tired eyes when you're giving yourself a facial. Did you realize that cucumbers actually are very beneficial in skin care -- and not just on puffy eyes?

Cucumbers are rich in a natural silica. This is essential to supporting skin's connective tissue. Large amounts of Vitamin C are also present in cukes, which surprises many people since we typically associate vitamin C with oranges and other citrus fruits.

Cucumbers also possess another ingredient that we don't often hear of. It's called Caffeic Acid. Caffeic acid is really a fabulous ingredient in skin care because it is a potent antioxidant. And if the name sounds a bit like caffeine, you're right. Caffeic acid is found in coffee beans, too!

When you use products with cucumber, your skin will look brighter & more radiant. Sensitive skin types will adore cucumber because of its ability to soothe red and irritated skin. I often recommend that those with painful cystic acne use gentle cucumber products to help ease inflammation.

1. I am a baseball nerd. I know it may shock you, but I've got the Sportscenter app downloaded to my tablet and my settings pointed to Yankees updates. I am such a fan of pitcher Andy Pettitte that I waited on the phone for over two hours on Friday to get tickets for his triple-A rehab start here in Rochester. I was so excited to see him at the game--the same way the boys would be if they were to see R2D2 walking down the street....I even collect Andy Pettitte baseball cards :)

2. I think I've found my favorite K-cup flavor! It's Green Mountain Island Coconut and it is soooo good!

3. I sing in the car...loudly. But only when no one else is listening, of course.

4. I am unashamedly liberal. I also love our President.

5. Even though I am a complete and total girlie girl, it wasn't always that way. I used to play in the mud, collect matchbox cars, and even had a subscription to Motor Trend when I was a kid, thanks to my grandfather, who was in the car business for decades.

6. I am SO OVER my low carb phase! I cannot stand to look at another egg or even my favorite food on earth--cheese! I couldn't take it anymore. The other night I hightailed it to Wegmans and stocked up on loads of fresh fruits. Oh my goodness, how I have missed fruit! Strawberries, Granny Smith apples, blackberries, blueberries, welcome back to my life!

7. I am finishing my last bar of Aunt Nancy's Handmade Soap! I returned to my beloved Carrot unscented soap not long ago on my face and my complexion is even brighter. Safe Ingredients for Moms to Be

With all of the topics I have covered here on the blog, I can't believe I've never posted about ingredients safety for moms to be.

Today, I'd like to go over some of the ingredients to avoid while pregnant. Since over 60% of what we apply to our skin gets absorbed into our bloodstream, what expectant moms use is really very important.

I remember being concerned about what to eat (or not to eat) while I was pregnant. As much as I love soft cheeses and coffee, I eliminated them from my diet from the get go. I was careful about skin care, having switched to Burt's Bees (which was one of the only options at the time), but didn't really think about the other things at the time.

There's just so much more research and information out there these days.

Ingredients to Avoid While Pregnant

As wonderful as essential oils are, some really need to be avoided while pregnant. As someone who studied aromatherapy extensively, this can be a tricky subject because there ARE so many benefits of essential oils, but there still is research out there suggesting many should be avoided, so I woul err on the side of caution, especially during the crucial first trimester.

Here is a great link from the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists. They, in fact, recommend avoiding all essential oils during the first trimester and Chic & Green does agree with this.

Other Ingredients:

Neem Oil -- Neem has been shown to cause damage to the forming kidneys of babies in the womb.

Tea Tree Oil -- In pregnancy, this has been linked to hormonal issues and abnormal development in boys.

Oxybenzone -- This is found in many different sunscreens. In pregnancy, this ingredient has been shown to cause hormonal issues.

Nanoparticles -- The more and more I study nanoparticle technology, the more concerned I become. There needs to be more regulation of this one. In pregnancy, I recommend that you err on the side of caution. In a 2011 study, research revealed that nanoparticles caused pregnancy complications in mice. (source). These are found in titanium dioxide and zinc oxide--opt for pressed powder makeups over loose. Nanoparticles in loose minerals are much easier to inhale and have dispersed in the air. You will also find nanoparticles in some sunscreens.

Salicylic Acid -- Also called BHA or beta hydroxy acid, this is a wonderful oil soluble ingredient to get deep into the pores, help ease inflammation and for the treatment of acne-- unless you are pregnant. Since this ingredient is in the aspirin family, it needs to be avoided. Oral salicylins (like aspirin) have been shown to cause birth defects and increase bleeding problems. While there aren't concrete studies yet on topical salicylic acid in pregnancy, since we know there are great risks taking the oral form, these need to be avoided in skin care. You will also want to avoid white willow bark while pregnant. This is a natural form of salicylic acid and is often found in organic and natural skin care products. (white willow bark source)

Retinoids -- Oral retinoids, such as Accutane, have been shown to cause birth defects. While less is known concerning topical forms of vitamin A, it is recommended by the experts to avoid them while pregnant. Look for these names on labels--

Differin (adapelene)
Retin-A, Renova (tretinoin)
Retinoic acid
Retinol
Retinyl linoleate
Retinyl palmitate
Tazorac and Avage (Tazarotene)

Phthalates -- No one should be using phthalates, but they may be especially harmful for pregnant women. In 2005, there was a study conducted at the University of Rochester by Dr. Shanna Swan, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, showing a "significant relationship" to the presence of higher quantities of phthalates present in a pregnant woman's body and changes/altered genitals of boy babies. Phthalates are often components of artificial fragrances and in many nail polishes. Look for DBP or dibutyl phathalate on the label. Unfortuntately, this is not legally required on labels when it is in fragrance. Avoid artificial fragrances.

Formaldehyde Releasers -- Look on your labels for DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine, and quaternium-15. These all release formaldehyde. These have been linked to cancer, as well as having neurotoxic effects. The worst thing you can do -- get a Brazilian Blowout. These contain around 10% formaldehyde and are carcinogenic. No one should get one of these, especially pregnant women. Formaldehyde is a KNOWN carcinogen--in other words, it has been proven to cause cancer. It is not worth the chance to you or your unborn baby.

Parabens -- Again, this is on our list of ingredient to avoid for everyone, not just pregnant women. Some people think parabens are OK--that there isn't enough research out there to call them a real health threat. I think that can finally be put to rest now with the most recently published study:

In the September 1, 2011 edition of Carcinogenesis, researchers at the California Pacific Medical Center released their findings showing that both BPA and Methylparaben at even low concentrations found in humans have negative health consequences such as an increased breast cancer risk.

It also went on to mention the ever-increasing male breast cancer rate, which is another alarming trend. These findings are quite similar to an older study on parabens from about 8 years ago. In this compelling study in the Journal of Applied Toxicology, parabens were linked to breast cancer as they have shown to be hormone disruptive and lead to tumor growth.

I am the mother of boys. What really made me take notice of this issue was a July 2002 article in the Archives of Toxicology. According to Dr. S. Oishi of the Department of Toxicology, Tokyo Metropolitan Research Laboratory of Public Health, exposure of newborn male mammals to butylparaben “adversely affects the secretion of testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system.”

Burt's Bees has a line called Mama Bee, which was recently improved and is free of artificial fragrances. The products are quite lovely and are affordably priced.

I also highly recommend the unscented all natural soap bars from Aunt Nancy's Handmade Soap. All can be used on both face and body.

Opt for a short and sweet ingredients list. Argan oil will make a lovely facial serum for you while pregnant--works great on the ends of hair, on nails and cuticles, and for a moisturizer too! I love the Argan Oil from 100% Pure.

Herbatint offers a healthy and safe hair color option free of ammonia, phthalates, alcohol, parabens, fragrance, etc. If you must use a color that touches the roots, go for this one. Otherwise, I would opt for off scalp highlights if you really won't give up the color.

Opt for a pressed mineral foundation as opposed to loose unless the loose product is clearly marked nanoparticle free from a reputable company. I like the pressed powder foundation from Honeybee Gardens.

Badger Unscented SPF 30+ is a non nano sunscreen and delivers broad spectrum protection.

(seed) Healthy Hand Cream is available in a fragrance free option and works wonders on the hands, feet, and dry facial skin. Locals, you can also find this one at Wegmans!

Lastly, we all want pretty fingernails and toes--try the safer nail polish alternatives on the market. My top 2? Zoya and Priti NYC. My current favorite shade is Zoya's Skylar, a pretty blue gray with shimmer.

The Oil Cleansing Method

The last time I sat down to chat with my friend, Christine, we were talking about the Oil Cleansing Method for facial skin care.

Not too long ago, I returned to the method. Boy, did I miss it!

I shared this recipe with you a couple years back, but I'd like to again for my newer readers. This is the very same recipe I used for my facial cleansing oil that I sold when I had my line of natural skin care.

Today, I am going to show you how to make my facial cleansing oil. This was my best-selling cleanser for a good couple years and I know you'll enjoy it!

We've all seen the facial oils on the market from brands like Shu Uemera, DHC, and more. The only thing I believe setting this recipe apart from others is the cost.

In fact, I believe this is less irritating because I do not use emulsifiers in this. No, this cleansing oil doesn't rinse right off with a splash of water, but that is not a bad thing. Sometimes people mistakenly believe that the OIL is what can aggravate breakouts in retail cleansing oils, when indeed it is the synthetic emulsifying agent. The emulsifying agents used in some of the popular retail cleansing oils have been shown to promote acne and aggravate eczema.

This facial oil is what I use to remove my makeup at night as part of "double cleansing"--using a cleansing oil first followed by a second cleanser. When I was still doing my line, The Good Guide rated each of my facial cleansers a 9.0 out of 10--in the top 10% of all cleansers on the market. It was also rated very safe by Skin Deep. When you use it (if you're new to this), you will see why!

Do not be afraid of the word "oil". Most vegetable oils do not, in fact, clog the pores. My facial cleansing oil is a wonderful blend of high-quality ingredients. You may use this to remove your makeup. It will melt it right off. I prefer to gently dampen the skin and then massage into my skin and wherever I have makeup. I rinse with tepid water and then follow with Aunt Nancy's Handmade Soaps Rose Clay Facial Bar in the months when my skin is very dry and Acure Organics cleanser for normal to oily skin in the humid months.

The Oil Cleansing Method has been embraced by several well-known brands. Why? It is gentle, yet effective!

Here are the oils I put in this FACIAL CLEANSING OIL. You do not need all of them. You may use just one, two, three--all of them are just a FABULOUS blend!

I use equal parts safflower & rice bran to make the bottle half way full. Then mix equal parts olive squalane, jojoba, sunflower, grapeseed and argan to the mix to make up the other half. This is my personal best formula. Some people may want more grapeseed...others more jojoba. It just takes a little experimentation to get the right blend for yourself.

More on the ingredients used--

Safflower Oil: Safflower oil has firming and hydrating properties and consists of over 75% Linoleic Acid and is very high in Oleic Acid. Both are very moisturizing, yet this oil penetrates the skin very quickly so it isn't greasy.

Rice Bran Oil: This wonderful oil can held reduce inflammation and skin irritation. It absorbs very quickly without leaving a film on the skin. This oil is antioxidant-rich, as it contains vitamin E and gamma oryzanol. Rice Bran is a great, lightweight oil to give your skin a velvety feel.

Olive Squalane: Has been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It is ideal to soften your skin as well. We naturally produce squalane, but as we age, the production slows down. This ingredient is vegan (traditional forms come from sharks), from olive oil. It can improve cracked skin, and skin suffering from conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. It has regenerative properties and can help restore a youthful, supple appearance. It is very light in texture, so it will not leave a greasy residue on the skin.

Jojoba Oil: is wonderful for the skin because it mimics your skins own sebum, drawing excess oil out. Jojoba oil is pure and it is natural. This oil is hydrating without being greasy. It will not promote acne or aggravate an existing case of acne.

Sunflower Oil: is chock full of vitamins A, C, D, and E. It is highly protective. It has also been shown to fight bacteria, which makes this a wonderful oil for acne, and why I believe this is ideal for all skin types.

Grapeseed Oil: This is very lightweight and absorbs quickly into the skin. It contains antioxidants and has high amounts of linoleic acid.

Argan Oil: Argan is a very special oil. Argan itself contains more antioxidant and cell regenerative properties than olive oil, grape seed oil and avocado oil combined together. Argan oil has been shown in many studies to help increase cell regeneration and improve cell turnover. When applied to the skin, it absorbs quickly, and without an oily film, leaving behind a silky and satiny feel.

Argan Oil contains Omega 6 fatty acids, twice the amount of Vitamin E than olive oil, Vitamin A to improve elasticity; Phenols, which are tremendously beneficial antioxidants, as well as antifungal and antibacterial agents; and something called Triterpens, which aid in cell restructuring, can slow down the cell aging process, and also act as an anti-inflammatory. It is one of the more expensive oils to buy, but it is commonly referred to as "Liquid Gold" for a very good reason!

How To Use Facial Cleansing Oil: Dampen skin with tepid water. Apply cleansing oil to your fingertips (no larger than the size of a dime) and massage into the skin. Massage for at least 60 seconds in upward circular motions. This oil is able to remove stubborn waterproof makeup, sunscreen and mascara. Gently massage and rub ever so gently with a baby washcloth or a gentle microfiber facial cloth. Rinse again. Follow with a lny of your favorite fragranace free natural cleansers or bars.

What's In It Wednesday: LUSH

Today we're going to look at an entire line, rather than one select product. We talked about Lush Gorgeous before here on the blog a couple years back, so I thought we'd return for another look at the brand.

A Lush boutique recently opened locally at Eastview Mall and the moment you walk in, you get the impression that you are looking at natural, fresh skin care.

Are LUSH products truly natural, though?

Let's take a look.

According to Lush, they say that they "...believe in making effective products from fresh, organic* fruit and vegetables, the finest essential oils and safe synthetics."

I am going to pick 3 products today to show you in more depth so we can see what really is in them. This may be an eye opener for many of you devoted Lush fans.

The first product is a shower gel called Dirty Springwash. The website boasts that it is a natural shower gel with "very little water".

Water (Aqua) , Sodium Laureth Sulfate , Sodium Cocoamphoacetate , Glycerine , Lauryl Betaine , Sodium Bicarbonate , Propylene Glycol , Fine Sea Salt (Sodium Chloride) , Perfume , Spearmint Oil (Mentha viridis) , Menthol Crystals , Hydroxcitronellal , Methyl Ionone , *Limonene , *Linalool , FD & C Blue No. 1 , Methylparaben

Interestingly, the #1 ingredient in this shower gel is water, so I am a bit perplexed by the "very little water" claim. #2 in this is controversial sodium laureth sulfate.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate is something we've discussed here on the blog many times. I do not like sulfates. There are far better cleansing options. Sodium Laureth Sulfate is an ingredient used to clean garage floors at service stations and in the car wash as a cleansing agent. The effects shown in animal studies are very disturbing to say the least. When sulfates are tested on young animals, their eyes can stop developing because of the harmful proteins absorbed. They have been shown to suffer severe damage to their nervous systems and even death. One study I read showed that children who get sulfates in their eyes may get cataracts. Children! Sodium Laureth Sulfate is also very bad for the environment and has been shown to be lethal to fish. Even though sulfates themselves are no longer believed to cause cancer, when they are combined with other compounds, they can be quite hazardous.

Propylene Glycol is also in this shower gel. Yuck! This is the cosmetic form of mineral oil--a crude oil. It is also found in similar form in antifreeze, and brake fluid. In cosmetics, it is supposed to help retain moisture. It is linked in some studies to liver and kidney damage. It is also highly irritating.

Perfume -- AKA artificial fragrance. Nearly every Lush product contains this. Synthetic fragrance is dangerous. Read more here.

Methyl Ionone -- a highly floral component of fragrance. It has a violet aroma and is on the list of banned and/or restricted ingredients in the EU, as it is a possible toxin for our immune systems.

Limonene-- skin sensitizer; for perfume. Restricted/banned in other countries

Linalool-- Masking fragrance; shown to be hazardous, banned/restricted for use in other countries

FD & C Blue No. 1--A synthetic dye that comes from petroleum. While it hasn't been proven unsafe in cosmetics use, it has proven to be toxic to humans.

Methylparaben-- an unsafe preservative. Linked to breast cancer. A premature skin ager, too. Read more about why parabens need to be avoided here.

The second product we'll be looking at is a bar soap called Red Rooster.

Propylene Glycol , Water (Aqua) , Rapeseed Oil , Coconut Oil (Brassica napus; Helianthus annuus; Cocos nucifera) , Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice (Citrus sinensis) , Sodium Stearate , Sodium Lauryl Sulfate , Sodium Hydroxide , Cinnamon Leaf Oil (Cinnamomum cassia) , Orange Oil (Citrus dulcis) , Cloves (Eugenia caryophyllus) , Cinnamon Sticks (Cinnamomum cassia) , Orange or Lemon Slices (Citrus dulcis , Star Anise (Illicium verum) , Sodium Chloride , *Cinnamal , *Coumarin , *Eugenol , *Benzyl Benzoate , *Limonene , *Linalool , Perfume , Gardenia Extract (Gardenia jasminoides) , FD & C Red No. 4

The #1 ingredient in this bar soap is Propylene Glycol. This is so far removed from what anyone would consider a natural soap. A natural soap does NOT contain propylene glycol. Ask any soaper what they're putting in their lovingly made, handcrafted bars and I assure you no one will say, "First I add a happy helping of anti-freeze. Then I add in some Sodium Lauryl Sulfate for good measure. To make it even more wholesome, I've put in some FD & C dyes."

Propylene Glycol--Yuck! This is the cosmetic form of mineral oil--a crude oil. It is also found in similar form in antifreeze, and brake fluid. In cosmetics, it is supposed to help retain moisture. It is linked in some studies to liver and kidney damage. It is also highly irritating.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate--was once rumored to cause cancer. While this has been proven false, SLS is a highly irritating detergent known for creating a lather. Scientists do not recommend using SLS at a rate of 15% of a total product, and at that amount only because it will be diluted with water and rinsed out.

Coumarin--You may not be familiar with the name Coumarin, but are probably familiar with its relatives, Coumadin or Warfarin, blood thinning medication and Tonka Bean, a fragrance ingredient. In high doses, all can be lethal. Coumarin is found in the seeds of the Tonka Bean. Coumarin is on the EU's list of banned and/or restricted ingredients and several studies have shown there to be many systemic effects in low doses. To think that this is in here and may very well be absorbed into the bloodstream is very alarming, especially since there are links to cancer. This is found in this product as a fragrance ingredient.

Eugenol--a denaturant and fragrance component. Highly toxic. On the EU's banned/restricted list. The National Library of Medicine HazMap calls this a "known human immune system toxicant."

Limonene-- skin sensitizer; for perfume. Restricted/banned in other countries

Perfume--AKA artificial fragrance. Nearly every Lush product contains this. Synthetic fragrance is dangerous. Read more here.

FD & C Red 4-- Derived from petroleum (crude oil)

Lastly, I'd like to see what is in Rehab, a shampoo advertised to treat damaged and abused hair. The ingredients?

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate , Carrageenan Infusion , Sodium Alkyl Sulfate , Cocamide DEA , Cocamide MEA , Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate , Perfume , Fresh Papaya Juice (Carica papaya) , Fresh Pineapple Juice (Ananas comosus) , Salt (Sodium Chloride) , Fresh Kiwi Juice (Actinidia chinensis) , Fresh Mango Juice (Mangifera indica) , Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis) , Olive Oil (Olea europaea) , Almond Oil (Prunus dulcis) , Lavender Oil (Lavandula hybrida) , Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita) , Rosemary Oil (Rosmarinus officinalis) , Juniperberry Oil (Juniperus communis) , Rose Absolute (Rosa centifolia) , *Limonene , *Linalool , Benzyl Alcohol , Propylparaben , Methylparaben

Nothing says repair your damaged hair like Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, synthetic fragrance, and a duo of parabens (rolling my eyes, shockingly).

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate is a surfactant that carries similar health risks to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. SLS was once rumored to cause cancer. While this has been proven false, SLS is still a highly irritating detergent known for causing redness and soreness to the eyes and skin. It is harsh and it is drying. This is probably the worst surfactant you'd want for hair in need of a gentle cleansing.

Sodium Alkyl Sulfate is another harsh cleanser. In fact, Alkyl Sulfates are regularly found in laundry detergents. I don't know about you, but would you wash your hair with Wisk?

Cocamide DEA is another cleanser. Lush sure uses lots of cleansing agents in their shampoo! The EPA has stated that there is limited evidence linking this ingredient to cancer. It is also classified as "expected to be toxic or harmful" in Canada. It is both a skin and eye irritant, as well as linked to liver and lung changes in lab testing of animals. A major concern with this ingredient would be contamination concerns, as it's been linked to Nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic impurities found in many ingredients. Nitrosamines are proven endocrine disruptors and there are multiple studies linking them to several different cancer types.

Cocamide MEA should be avoided, as it often contains small amounts of Cocamide DEA. See above.

Perfume--AKA artificial fragrance. Nearly every Lush product contains this. Synthetic fragrance is dangerous. Read more here.

Limonene-- skin sensitizer; for perfume. Restricted/banned in other countries

Linalool--Masking fragrance; shown to be hazardous, banned/restricted for use in other countries

Propylparaben and Methylparaben-- Please read my comprehensive post on parabens here.

The Chic & Green Bottom Line:

Do we advocate buying this brand? Simply put, no. Are the ingredients used in the brand natural? Another big NO. I should say--they use natural ingredients, but sandwich them between an equal portion of toxins.

With the shampoo, for example, they do use some lovely, wholesome ingredients. However, they are all sandwiched between harsh cleansers linked to cancer and harsh preservatives linked to cancer.

They use artificial fragrance, synthetic dyes, sulfates, petrochemicals, parabens, and harmful propylene glycol. Lush is no more natural than Johnson and Johnson products, Suave, Bath & Body Works, or any other oridinary and unnatural bath and body line out there.

What is really disappointing about this brand is that the image they are portraying is that of a truly wholesome company. When you're in the store, you get the feeling that each items was made with love with high quality ingredients. The reality is that there are harmful ingredients in nearly every product they offer.

This morning I had a delightful chat with a friend and we were discussing how it is OK to dabble....to do a few little things in life that really make you happy....to not always do something because it the path you are supposed to follow.

After that talk, I decided to head to Greece (a suburb) to go to Kohl's & Target. I was driving down W. Ridge Road listening to the radio. "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's was the song that was playing. All of a sudden, while headed straight, a white Ford Escape SUV turned in front of the white Impala in front of me. The driver of the Impala had no time to stop. I remember thinking, "Oh my God, that car is going to get hit."

And then everything appeared in slow motion. Do you know how on television or in a movie, you'll see a scene in slow motion? That is how it looked before my eyes. I watched as the woman ahead of me in the Impala struck the man in the SUV and I watched as his vehicle literally was lifted up into the air and fell down onto its roof. It landed in front of the door to a bar called California Brewhaus. I can still hear the sounds.

I don't remember doing so, but I turned onto Goodwill St., the little side street next to me. I jumped out of the car and you could see all of the fluids from underneath the hood spilling out. I can still smell that maple syrupy smell of coolant.

I did not want to look. I saw all the smashed glass--the caved in roof--the fact that the front seats of the car were all smooshed in.

I called 911. Another driver stopped. A woman walking by was already on her phone as well. A man was trapped inside, upside down. Within 2 minutes, firetrucks, police, and ambulance were all there.

The first person I came across was a woman who appeared to be in shock. She was in a state of fear and panic. All she kept asking about was if the other driver would be OK. She was shaking so badly. You could tell from the stains on her skirt that she had hurt her leg, although she refused to let anyone look at it. There was a language barrier and the woman was just so scared. The firefighters really, truly are heroes. They got the man out of the SUV as a team. He was taken away and they said he would be OK.

The woman's husband came. He's a taxi driver and he arrived at the scene to be with his wife. I gave my statement to the police and the woman and I hugged goodbye.

My heart is still pounding, even though this happened at 11:45 or so.

You never know what is going to happen, friends. Life is truly fleeting and in the blink of an eye, your whole world literally could be upside down.

I was just talking to my hubby, who works from home as well. I went downstairs to talk with him and we talked about how life is way too short to ever be unhappy or have regrets.

It leaves you thinking--do you tell everyone how you feel--TRULY feel--each day? Do you have difficult decisions to make that you keep putting off because you think you have all the time in the world?

If you have dreams you want to achieve, don't wait until a "more convenient time." If you are juggling way too many projects, cut the cord and let go of some of them. Life is way too short to spend thinking you'll do something tomorrow....do it today! Lastly....what I was left with the most after this was to remember to tell Tom and the boys how they truly mean the world to me...

8 Bits of Randomness

It's time for another edition of 8 Bits of Randomness here are Chic & Green.

1. I am reading a wonderful book right now that I suggest all moms of boys read. It's called The Mama's Boy Myth by Kate Stone Lombardi and I think it is absolutely wonderful (and validating at the same time). Some people think I am overprotective at times....I'm the mom who still consoles her children if they fall and skin their knees. I'm kind of anti-"Oh, toughen up--no blood, no foul" when it comes to parenting. So if you're like me in that respect, you will love this book.

2. I have been low-carbing it for the past few weeks (and have lost 9 pounds). Nothing wacky or crazy--just finding that the way I feel is majorly affected when I eat the way I was--which was actually very "healthy" with whole grains, chia seeds, the rainbow on my plate, etc. Combining what I learned in the book Eat Right for Your Type and my own experience cutting carbs, I am just feeling really good. The book, which my friend from City Life Eats told me about when we met in Washington a couple years back, is one I was VERY skeptical of. I thought that it was most likely another quack-written book. For me, though, it has been eye opening. It says that people with my blood type don't always digest gluten well (not the same as Celiac's) and do much better with less grains and more proteins and meats. Sure enough, the changes have been wonderful for me. My blood sugar, which was super low (I am hypoglycemic) is STABLE right now. I don't get dizzy or lethergic or feel blah anymore....

3. I am absolutely loving a skin care product right now that I was sent for review. It's called
Snowberry Intensive Renewal Serum and it is available online and at Henri Bendel in NYC. In a million years, I wouldn't spend $159 on a single product, but I really like this....too bad I do not believe it should be priced at above $30. It really is great, though, for my big spenders out there! Seriously, though, it is a fantabulous product, but is it worth $159? NO WAY, JOSE!

4. On a much more affordable note-- I am completely hooked on my latest foundation purchase. I've been using this one exclusively for over a month now and it is awesome. It's Honeybee Gardens Pressed Mineral Foundation--and it is $9.99!!! Best pressed mineral foundation ever. Even better than my old splurge of Jane Iredale Pressed Base (which was $52)!

5. My new favorite drink (other than coffee, of course) is one I bought on a whim at Target the other day. It is called LaCroix Sparkling Water and it comes in cans and the flavor I chose in Coconut. YUM! Zero artificial sweeteners. Zero sugar. Zero calories. Zero sodium...great flavor!!! In fact, it is an all-natural product.

6. How excited am I that a new HomeGoods opened in Victor last week? My mom and I went and I love, love, love it!!! Between that and the Penfield Tuesday Morning (don't bother with the other 2 in Rochester), I am a happy girl!

7. Can I give a huge shout out to my friend Tanvi? She is in the latest issue of Rochester Magazine!!! What a busy bee she has been. Between things like Fashion Week, traveling overseas, planning a wedding, and opening a new Park Avenue Boutique called Peppermint, she is the ultimate successful girl on the go!!! CONGRATS!

Wow. How many toxins can one little blush be made of? Here are the worst, in my view--

Talc: With over a dozen studies linking talc to cancer, it amazes me that it is still in products when there are so many other non-toxic alternatives (cornstarch, rice flour, various clays, etc). According to the Cancer Prevention Coalition, "Talc particles have been shown to cause tumors in the ovaries and lungs of cancer victims."

Diisostearyl Malate: A skin condition linked in at least one study to dermatitis (Japan)

Paraffinum Liquidum / Mineral Oil / Huile Minerale: Crude oil and a very inexpensive bi-product of petroleum.

Alumina: Also know as Aluminum Oxide. This is another area where science is still trying to reach a definitive answer, but I personally will not use aluminum on my skin as it does get absorbed.It is linked to Alzeimer's and breast cancer, so I do not take the risk.

Barium Sulfate: It whitens cosmetics and can be highly irritating to the skin.

Lake Colors: Artificial dyes in the form of Lake colorants. Several lake colors are linked to cancer. When you see LAKE in the name of a colorant, know that this color will contain harmful aluminum.

The Chic & Green Bottom Line:

Maybelline spends a great deal of money advertising in magazines. It is no wonder that many beauty recommendations are based on which companies are essentially bankrolling magazines...In fact, Maybelline sponsors sweepstakes in Redbook and has lots of glossy (expensive) ads in the magazine. I am frequently asked about toners and eye creams and whether they are necessary products. Today, I am going to discuss toners and my opinion on them.
