My New Design

I spent the afternoon changing my template the the design I prepared for my new site, though I'm not quite sure why. I will be moving my blog to new webspace and be converting it to Wordpress, so why did I waste my time with my blogger template? Still not completely sure. Anyway, I'm waiting to hear about hosting from John. If I can't get anything through v7n, no big deal and I'll do some research. I really don't need much - it'll be a small site. But enough of leeching off whatever webspace I get through my school or whatnot.

Last thing, I made a tiny little change today, changing my Blogspot URL from lauraisageek to laurakishimoto. VERY dumb move. While I don't care about SEO, I forgot that other people DO. Some bot or company took it up, with my design and filled it with spam crap. It pisses me off. I reported it for copyright, but apparently I need to file a paper copy with Blogger - I'm not sure yet if I'm willing to do that. So then I reported it for spam. I'm sure it will be removed, but my concern is that it will be replaced with another. I wish I could just undo my mistake, not to "regain my PR", but to avoid spammy groups from taking it for themselves.

Fuck, I hate internet marketing spammers.

My Bags

As a gift for heading off to grad school (T-minus ten days!), my parents bought me a new luggage set. Because I only have a 50kg luggage allowance, we went on a search for ultra-lightweight sets. Keep in mind that this includes my carry on bag, which will have my laptop in it, and that I am essentially moving, so every ounce counts! After everything, I ended up with three pieces of softside luggage: large roller, duffel roller, and a (surprisingly spacious) tote for carry on. It's a line from Roots called "Clouds", but I can find NOTHING about it online. Oh well. Regular price? $550. With a sale at The Bay and my dad eligible for a senior's discount, we got it for $213. My new cosmetics case will go within a larger piece for packing.

And because there was a group for it (what's in your bag?), I took a picture of the contents of my purse nowadays. Between cream for my bug bites, pounds sterling, a card game, and Claude, I think it sums up my current life pretty well.

Central Kings Rural High School students David Shepherd and Travis Price bought 75 pink tank tops and other pink items for students to wear after a new student at the school was bullied for wearing a pink shirt.

This incredible display of awareness and generosity can only be described as noble. Classic story of going beyond the excuse of "I'm only one person - what can I do?" to a simple but perfect plan to take control of a bad situation.

Big thumbs up to my eastern neighbours.

My Wayward Application

To whom it may concern,

I submitted an application for entry into the postgraduate music program (MMus Performance - Early Music Soprano) in October of 2006, with my recording following soon after. With this I had paid an application fee of L56. My reference number was 0700974.

On May 13th of this year I had sent an inquiry about when I might hear my result, as I had time-sensitive offers of admission to other UK schools. Richard Jerrom prompty replied:
"Your audition CD will be heard by an Early Music panel later this month [May] when other candidates are being considered. We will let you know the outcome of this audition as soon as possible"

It is now midway through August and I have heard no result through post, email, nor phone. I am no longer interested in attending Guildhall, regardless of application result.

I feel that my application fee entitled me to the courtesy of a response. I would like to request a refund of my initial fee. I understand this payment is applied toward processing costs, but as I have received no result I can only assume it that my package did not finish this process.

My Laptop Skin

My baby Toshiba endured some scratches since birth and bears the small (but noticable) scars. I decided to try a laptop skin and eventually purchased this one at iStyles. It's a little "out there" in design, but for now I'm quite pleased with the result.

In the future I may try more subtle grey dots (large or small), more feminine (though might look odd on a grey-based case), or more artsy (kind of looks like a cello).

My Graduate School

Long story short, I'm going to the University of York in the fall. Exciting. :) Want to know more? Ask me later... I've gone over it so many time lately! And I applied for this:

Vinson Assistantship for Internet Services (£4,000) This post entails about 11 hours work per week, developing and maintaining the department websites and assisting in running web-related systems. The assistant will have considerable scope in proposing changes to the sites and in applying and enhancing personal skills in web design and related areas. Applicants must be proficient in coding HTML. Familiarity with PHP, MySql, Photoshop or similar programmes will be a distinct advantage.

I can't see that many/any of the other postgraduate in students would have those skills, so I do I hope I get the placement. Being an international student on a student visa, it would be nice to get a few hours of legal work on campus, some monetary subsidy for my outrageous fees, and a chance to keep doing webstuffs!

My Next Design

I've been playing around with a possible template for a personal website. After all these years I've never gotten around to actually building a site for more than just my blog.

The site will be simple, containing six main sections as outlined in the main navigation on the left. I would appreciate the following:

any advice and constructive criticism on the design as a whole, as well as suggestions for improvement.
insight on whether I should utilize the 2- or 3-column format. If I use a third column, it will contain a blogroll as well as section-specific links and files. If I do not, I will have to find a way to incorporate this content into my design or content other ways.

My Rajaton Sheet Music Order

My Future Expense

I have not-so-secretly been looking into investing in a laptop. My current desktop is about five years old, and if I'm headed to England I definitely want to invest in portability.

I've done my research and I think I'm set on a Toshiba Satellite A100-TA9. Staples has it on for $1500. A quick rundown: Core 2 Duo 1.83ghz processor, 2GB RAM, 160GB hard drive (5400), and a 15.4" screen. A must-have international warranty and great reviews from owners that I have talked to. Also above, the portable Belkin docking station.

My Brother's Sick Sense of Humour

My parents are off in Florida. My mom sent an email checking in with us (my brothers and I) last week. No one responded, so she sent another one yesterday. "Did anyone get my email?" Here is David's response:

We got the first email.

Things at home are good. We spent all day yesterday cleaning up from the 4-day party we dubbed "The House Massacre". The cats are having a blast spending the nights outside. We were a bit worried about the food supply out there, but judging from the squirrel carcasses and the fish heads lying around, it looks as if they've been doing fine. Though, I haven't seen Lego in a couple days, and Sumi seems to be MUCH larger since. I've dropped out of school, which seems to have helped with the problem of getting up on time for class. We've also traded in one of the cars for a pizza, as we were a bit hungry yesterday and the squirrels can only fill so many meals during the day. They wouldn't accept the other car at the pizzeria however, as none of the deliverymen can drive standard. We'll have to find another way to assist in the fight against toxic emmisions. Don't worry about our eating habits though. We've had plenty of greens, as you've taught us. The leafy thing in your bedroom supplemented for greens nicely, though it did have a bitter aftertaste. We'll experiment more in the coming days and keep you posted. Though, you really should've told us how to differentiate between real and fake plants, aside from taste.

In parting, a few important questions:
1. Where can i find the deed for the house?
2. Is amputation covered through our health insurance?
3. Do you know of any capital murder defence attorneys?

I think that's it. We'll let you know if anything else comes up.

My camera (rather, my parent's old camera) sucks and only takes decent pictures outside in good light. The flash is horrible, so I try to take indoor photos without flash to preserve colour, only to end up with potentially blurry photos.
