Epping Police acting Sgt Mark Stephenson said police received several calls from residents concerned about illegal fireworks, but most did not make a formal statement for fear of retribution.

Sgt Stephenson said an offender caught with illegal fireworks would face charges and a court appearance.

“But we need to either catch them in the act or we need witnesses and a statement,” Sgt Stephenson said.

“A lot of (witnesses) know who (the offenders) are, but don’t give us a statement.

“People shouldn’t fear retribution because they would be protected under the Crimes Act.

“If people provide information, that would give us more cause to attend an address, which could possibly result in charges.”

South Morang CFA Captain Lindsay McHugh said many residents were concerned that fireworks would cause grass fires, especially in the Plenty Gorge.

“There is a chance it could occur but it is minimal,” Mr McHugh said.

He said it was fortunate that fireworks did not cause injury or property damage during the holiday period, but said the devices were extremely dangerous.

“They’re dealing with explosives here, and people are just being dumb in where they were situated,” Mr McHugh said.

“Over the years we’ve seen damage to hands, faces and property; just a couple of years ago a young child’s thumb was blown off.”

Doreen CFA Captain Chris Maries said the behaviour of residents letting off illegal fireworks all but quashed hopes of a partnership between fire authorities and the community.

“What is really disappointing here is the lack of personal responsibility,” Mr Maries said.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said six fireworks-related cases occurred across Melbourne between 10.15pm New Year’s Eve and 12.15am New Years’ Day.
