Winter 2011 CD Release

With accents of horn solos, Christmas bells and cow bell, this winter's compilation hits you right in the warm spot. Overall, the mix oozes a tone of the simpler days. Say Hi returns with his usual sweetheart lyrics, Summer Fiction makes a debut trickling piano keys and Peter Bjorn and John re-emerge bringing in the cow bell.

All the good times swing you could possibly want on a Friday afternoon, gilded with an easy-livin' saxophone solo to send you off into the weekend sunset.

2. Everlasting Light (Black Keys remix) - The Mummers

Who doesn't love a remix? The Black Keys get a feminine touch in this thick drum steady jam. Let the delightful symphony touch twirl you into the light.

3. Chandeliers - Summer Fiction

Prepare to be charmed. Summer Fiction, the one man (Bill Ricchini) Philadelphia based indie/hi fi/beach nut, releases his premier self tilted album November 30.

4. I Know - David Lynch

I've continued to listen to this song (not knowing if it was because it's supposedly by David Lynch or not) for over a month, and it's unmistakably one of the most ear drawing songs amongst the rotation.

5. Breaker Breaker - Peter Bjorn and John

As a sucker for lyrics about broken things, the quick drum beats rolling into the track build you up right before the break.

6. Berlin - Solander

Among the Swedish (and simultaneousness with the banjo) indie invasion, Solander has reunited and pushed their folk-esque sound onto the rest of the world. It's not a new sound, but it's one of the familiar sounds you can't tear your ears away from.

7. A Charming Man - We Can't Enjoy Ourselves

Not charming upon first listen, yet the melody and lyrics warm up swooning you right into singing the chorus.

8. Got Something for You - Best Coast, Wavves

Woo uh woo uh woo... Hipster favorites Best Coast and WAVVES (in addition to a myriad collection of artists) collaborated on "Got Something For You" for Target's charity Christmas album, "The Christmas Gig 2010." Don't expect to escape chanting "woo uh woo uh woo" throughout your day now.

9. Second Chance - Peter Bjorn and John

‎"Second Chance" off of PB & J's latest album, 'Gimme Some' (release date: March 29, 2011), returns to their "Writer's Block" sound; melodic and driven by cowbell.

10. Dots on Maps - Say Hi

Bringing innocence to the electric guitar (Fender Jazzmaster), Say Hi released his 7th album last week with little evidence of change... thank goodness. "There's a trigger somewhere, let's pull it."

11. Winter - The Dodos

If you like Beirut and ukuleles you'll probably like 'Winter' by The Dodos. It's not off of their soon to be released album, "No Color" but it's better and it has a horn solo.

12. Devils Hearts Grow Gold - La Sera

Out of an enchanting and beautiful mix of early Pixies swooning electric guitar, a chorus of honey voices, and a slight replication of that 1960's folk magic emergesLa Sera lulling you into your first headband made of dandelions.

13. If You Want It - TV Girl

Let's take it back to October 2010 and the era of Chillwave, TV Girl released their duplication of Todd Rundgren's 'Hello It's Me.' Is it better? Who cares. The lo-fi goodness will get you through the daily drudge.

14. Satellite - The Kills

Fuzzy dub bass that could thump its way through the thickest of smokey rooms, paired with distorted reggae guitar and chain compression. A pleasant feeling amidst the empty detritus that is contemporary pop music. This is best served up loud and with bass cranked.

15. What You Do to Me - BlakRoc

What goes better together than hip-hop and the blues? Not much, if anything. Featured in the latest Zale's commercial, Blakroc's 'What You Do To Me' is truly what love is made of.

16. Hello - Martin Solveig feat. Dragonette

It's a cuter/more indie MIA. Badass Dragonette and Parisian producer Martin Solveig mix up this new Trident commercial soundtrack.

17. Matchstick Murder - Tristen

Starting out like a strong Tennessee female folk track the tone turns into a 1960s classic chorus, making you feel right home, barefoot.

18. On My Own - Ulrich Shnauss

For a warm, fuzzy time, call Ulrich Schnauss. With a solid nod to Shoegaze music, this mysterious German producer forges some of the most enjoyable and vital IDM work of the past decade.

1. Dirty Thing - Telekinesis (Youtube)

One of the achingly catchy songs off of Telekinesis' latest EP, 'Parallel Seismic Conspiracies,' "Dirty Thing" is light and everything you're looking for in an "indie" sound... distorted and sounding like it was recorded in a basement.

2. Cameras - Matt & Kim (Youtube)

Power indie synth pop couple, Matt and kim released 'Sidewalks' in November. Following their album, 'Grand' it's hard to imagine anything better than "Daylight." While 'Sidewalks' isn't mind blowing, there are some amazing combinations of synth and orchestral sounds that are undeniably head bob inducing.

3. Telephone - Pomplamoose (Youtube)

Who can resist covers and remixes? Not ChipperDemon. Pomplamoose covers Lady Gaga. Not only is the song fresh (really, the perfect word for it), but the video is just fun to watch.

4. Lose It (In the End) ft. Ghostface Killah - Mark Ronson (Youtube)

Just when you thought Mark Ronson couldn't get any better, the Mark Ronson & The Business Intl. upcoming album, 'Record Collection' sings right to the synth loving, simple yet brilliant tunes heart. 'Record Collection' is expected to release this month featuring collaborations with Q-Tip, D’Angelo, Duran Duran and other music gods.

5. By Some Miracle - Philip Selway (Youtube)

Radiohead's drummer, Philip Selway's solo-debut album, Familial, is delightfully simple and unlike Radiohead, sweetly short. Album release from Nonesuch Records: August 31

6. Don't Turn the Lights On - Chromeo (Youtube)

Chromeo's single, "Don't Turn the Lights On" off of their album, 'Business Casual' (released August 17th), is a step down from their work off of their last album, 'Fancy Footwork,' but it is still 80's-esque.

7. Coquet Coquette - Of Montreal (Youtube)

At the end of June, Of Montreal released the single, "Coquet Coquette" off of latest album, and it sounds just like Of Monteal.

8. Down By the Water - The Drums (Youtube)

Ladies, prepare to swoon. The Drums' self titled album released in September features, "Down by the Water," a heart lulling combination of 50's and 80's music finesse.

9. Learning - Perfume Genius (Youtube)

A painfully good debut album, "Learning" by Perfume Genius, is another great product of the Seattle music scene.

10. Everytime I'm with You ft. Jason Lytle - Sparklehorse (Youtube)

Love albums beyond the grave? Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse were collaborating on 'Dark Night of the Soul' with the aim to release last year, but after a dispute with the label and two of the artists' deaths, the album was finally released July 13th. The whole album is a collection of music genius.

11. Communion - Maximum Balloon

The new TV on the Radio album released in August features several impressive guest voices. We have to say, TV on the Radio has brought it to the next level.

12. Swimming - Breathe Owl Breathe (Youtube)

Summer innocence is encapsulated in this easy breezy jam.

13. I Want the World to Stop - Belle and Sebastian (Youtube)

While it doesn't appear Belle & Sebastian have any intention of changing (not that they should), their November released album, 'Write About Love,' continues their signature sound of gentle whispering and ideal background music.

14. Winds of Change - Fitz & the Tantrums (Youtube)

Brought to you by a recent HTC commercial, "Winds of Change" by the Fitz & The Tantrums is the most recent sounding song by the band. Described as a "soul/pop band," the Fitz & The Tantrums and their album, 'Pickin’ Up The Pieces' sound like they belong at the kind of club that would feature both OutKast and James Brown.

15. Living in America - DOM (Youtube)

Once getting past images of James Brown in Rocky IV, this song beckons you down into a warm pop casserole of fuzzy blankets that will stay with you for days. Almost certain to be a sure fire, post-modern Nationalist anthem for a disenchanted generation inheriting an other-wise tasteless heritage of boojy musique. Enjoy. And enjoy again.

16. Crime Pays - Bear Hands (Youtube)

‎"Crime Pays" off of Bear Hands Nov. 2nd released album, 'burning bush supper club,' exemplifies the band's evolution from simple guitar riffs to more complicated instrumental compilations.

17. I Walked - Sufjan Stevens (Youtube)

It really depends what song you hear first off of Sufjan Stevens' latest album, 'The Age of Adz' to find it crazy or genius. "I Walked" is so mastered it seems impossible that it even exists.

The CD has a couple 80's-rific songs (like most ChipperDemon mixes) in addition to some fantastic random instrument inclusion jams. To point out some favorites: Jamaica's "I Think I Like U 2," Wolf Parade's "What Did My Lover Say?" Harlem's "Gay Human Bones," Javelin's "Oh! Centra," The Futureheads' "Struck Dumb" and, of course, the bonus tracks.

Tracklist as follows:

1. I Think I Like U 2 - Jamaica (lyrics)
Jamaica's debut album, produced by one half of Justice and the sound engineer of Daft Punk, proves to deserve their early-on attention. Their single, 'I Think I Like U 2,' is but one of their great jams. For such a simple song, you would not expect the video that goes with it.

2. Later – Dr. Dog

Creators of 'The Beach' and 'The Old Days' (two of ChipperDemon's favorite tracks ever), Dr. Dog has come out with their latest album, Shame Shame, and it's... polished. The gritty-ness that was rather endearing about Dr. Dog has been refined with a certain Flaming Lips kind of cleanness that is not at all disappointing, just different.

3. The Suburbs – Arcade Fire

The latest Arcade Fire album really only has a few great songs. 'The Suburbs' along with a couple others make the album worth the time to listen though.

4. What Did My Lover Say? (It Always Has to Go This Way) - Wolf Parade

Among the top 25 summer albums recommended by Spin Magazine, Wolf Parade's Expo 86 features this Killers-esque track. Watch out, the chorus of this song will have you randomly singing "What did my lover say?" in a low and strange way.

5. Flash Delerium – MGMT

'Flash Delirium,' is from their April released album, Congratulations. The track is pretty chill for an MGMT song, as is the entire album. Congratulations, while a mastery, is not MGMT's previous album, Oracular Spectacular.

6. Gay Human Bones – Harlem

Fans of the lo-fi and catchy riff sound will head bob to Austin hipster band, Harlem. Their sequel album, Hippies, features some real light hearted and fun jams.

7. Solitude in Bliss – Tame Impala

With a review from Pitchfork stating their new album, "toys with paisley pop, stoner vibes, and an expansive array of swirling guitars" Tame Impala's Innerspeaker is worth the check out.

8. 40 Day Dream – Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros

Having gone to see Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros at the Orange Peel in July, this song was fantastically performed. It is the kind of song that gets buried deep into the singing later part of my brain.

9. Believer – Goldfrapp

As an 80's dance beat enthusiast with a strong Cyndi Lauper devotion, I have found Goldfrapp's latest album to be head band, leg warmer fantastic.

10. Congratulations – MGMT

Another well done song by MGMT. Despite Congratulations not being more dancy, these two tracks prove MGMT's other great song building strengths.

11. Hollywood – Codeine Velvet Club

It'a all in the crescendos for this song. All in the crescendos.

12. Oh! Centra – Javelin

"Oh! Centra do, I'm watching you, let's see what you can do" makes this song worthy of any ChipperDemon mix. You will anticipate this song coming just to sing along with this lyric.

13. From Stardust to Sentience – High Places

This is just one of those necessary songs for it's light vocals and great interluding music. There were a few gems to choose from on High Places' latest album, but in the end, 'From Stardust to Sentience' had it all along.

14. Home – Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros

Well, didn't this song get popular.

15. Stranger – Dr. Dog

While, 'Later' is probably the favorite off of Shame, Shame, 'Stranger' has a magnetic chorus power that was just too hard to deny.

16. Struck Dumb – The Futureheads

Just really like this band. The Futureheads' new album is pretty similar to their last, and maybe not as good as their first, but it's just so hard to say no to Clash-a-likes.

17. Rocket – Goldfrapp

When it came to choosing a Goldfrapp song to feature, it was impossible to pass off the music video for 'Rocket.' I encourage you to check out the rest of the album.

The February 2010 CD Release

After a month of posting songs up on the facebook page, compiling a CD's worth of all new music was pretty easy and it's safe to say that every song is spankin' new. There were a lot of fun surprises with the month, Danger Mouse shmoozing it with James Mercer to create Broken Bells, or the past ChipperDemon featured band, the Muslims re-emerging as the Soft Pack.

A note on the mix: I'd say overall the CD has an undertone of TV on the Radio and stays pretty close to the "indie" genre, making it in some way, a bit monotonous but hip, none-the-less. Some of the highlight bands from the mix are La Roux, Broken Bells, and because she's just so damn cool, Janelle Monae.

Tracklist as follows:

1. Blue - We Are Wolves (lyrics)

This jam was released back in October of 2009. The other hit track, 'Holding Hands' off of We Are Wolves' album, Invisible Violence, has quite a different tone. 'Blue' almost has a TV On the Radio quality to it, but better.

2. Cult Following - Bluebrain (lyrics)
Cult Following by Bluebrain. Bluebrain, formerly the Epochs, is said to sound a little like TV on the Radio, which I can hear. I think they've got more of an electro sound, though.

3. Promises - The Morning Benders (lyrics)
'Promises' can get kind of lost within the mix of other songs due to its lulling effect, which is a shame because it really is a wining song. "I know this won't last a second longer than it has to" is a line that will charm you again and again.

4. Broken Horse - Freelance Whales (lyrics)
Weathervanes, Freelance Whales' debut album that released this month is fairly reminiscent of Iron and Wine. Their sound isn't new, but it is pleasant.

5. Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons (lyrics)
'Little Lion Man' by Momfurd & Sons has been getting quite a bit of attention lately. The single off of their upcoming album has one Paste Magazine journalist gushing about the song 'getting her' while the track was a pick of the week over at Spin Magazine. I'd say the attention is worth it.

6. What's In It For - Avi Buffalo (lyrics)
The line, "You are tiny and your lips are like little pieces of bacon" made my day yesterday. Otherwise, the Avi Buffalo track, 'What's In It For?' (off of their debut self-titled album coming out in April) has a whiny overall tone but the satire and lazy guitar mostly make up for it.

7. Life Magazine - Cold Cave (lyrics)
Not among the newer songs on the mix, 'Life Magazine' has an undeniable beat that it is hard not to enjoy. "I'm not going back" will chant you through the song bobbing all along.

8. I'm Not Your Toy - La Roux (lyrics)
A little more for the ladies, this track is so freakin' catchy. Listening through Hype Machine I ended up hearing about 3 different versions of this song and then this exact song several times in a row, and I loved every second of it. Almost impossible to sing along to, it's just hip swaying, forebrow crinkling 'cause your singing so hard good. La Roux also has a few other awesome songs such as, "Bullet Proof."

9. Twenty Two - Wakey!Wakey! (lyrics)
'Twenty Two' is off of Wakey! Wakey!'s latest album, Almost Everything I Wish I'd Said the Last Time I Saw You. It's pretty catchy, so listen with caution.

10. Be Brave - The Strange Boys (lyrics)
I love the sound of this track. The lyrics are nothing to get philosophical about but between the Beach Boys guitar sound, the lead singer's voice, and the chorus background; I can't help but bop to this song.

11. Shark's Tooth - Archie Bronson Outfit (lyrics)

After an epic hiatus, Archie Bronson outfit is releasing their latest album, Coconut, on March 23rd. 'Shark's Tooth' is their released single off of the album; sounding like some of their delicious older works.

12. Cold War - Janelle Monaé (lyrics)

With a mix of OutKast reminiscent music and a pop diva voice, Janelle Monaé's 2010 album is already ruling the pop circuit. this is a fairly catchy track, prepare for head bobbing.

13. Wrong - Mr Beasley (lyrics)
Mr Beasley is definitely a fun find. The tracks 'Wrong' and 'Right as Rain' have such a delightful ring to them, it's hard not to fall in love with this United Kingdom duo.

14. Answer to Yourself - The Soft Pack (lyrics)
The Soft Pack have gotten quite a bit of attention, and 'Answer to Yourself' is almost a hate love song. It's just a little too typical sounding, yet so perfectly so that I can't help singing along.

15. Vaporize - Broken Bells (lyrics)
'Vaporize' is one of the debut singles off of the James Mercer and Danger Mouse collaboration entitled, Broken Bells... which explains why it sounds so much like the Shins. The album is supposed to release in March. Definitely worth a listen.

16. Go Do - Jónsi (lyrics)

Paste Magazine included Sigur Rós's frontman, Jónsi's new solo effort-ed single, 'Go Do' in their 'Seven Great Snowy Music Videos'... and for how wintery February has been, it seems quite fitting.

17. Forest Green Oh Forest Green - Holly Miranda (lyrics)
The complexity of this song, both lyrically and musicly, are what bring this track it's great strength. This is one of those songs that could probably play twice or even thrice before you would notice it's on repeat.

18. Heaven Can Wait - Charlotte Gainsbourg and Beck (Grizzly Bear Remix) (lyrics)
The original version of this track is good but when I heard the Grizzly Bear Remix I actually thought that I was mistaken the first time and that THIS was the master version, it was so good. Then again, it's hard not to like most things linked to the name Grizzly Bear these days.

19. Marchin' In - Lo-Fi-Fnk (lyrics)
Swedish duo, Lo-Fi-Fnk, follow up their 2006 album with a bit less of dance-ness. The song, 'Marchin' In' has a lot of classic sounds and such a light melody that makes it hard to not enjoy.

Best of the Rest Volume: You're A Volume

With a long list of tracks, this February CD is packed with rock goodness. The largest contributor to this month's compilation is the fablous collection, Dark Was the Night, of indie artists collaborating and raising money for HIV and AIDS awareness. About a third of I'm Gonna Make Out With Your Boyfriend is comprised of tracks from Dark Was the Night, simply because the collection is just that good. The CD is in stores and available for download. Another exciting addition to the compilation is Say Hi to Your Mom and the Heartless Bastards. Say Hi to Your Mom, or just Say Hi, have come out with another fabulous album filled with low voiced lead lyrics and just catchy enough beats. Heartless Bastards are a brand new find for ChipperDemon, yet she's been around for a while apparently and even a common tourer of Greenville, SC.

1. All This Time - Heartless Bastards (lyrics)

It's a true shame the Heartless Bastard weren't found till now. "All This Time" is a ChipperDemon favorite by lightyears. The song has an energy and sound that fits the formula for a decent rock song, however, the lyrics/message launch the song into a greatness. The beginning is just so fantastic, "My emotions wrapped in vines are reaching for the sun that shines, oh, I must say I adore you... since you took my breath again, would you share your oxygen, so I can breathe one breath of air, intoxicated by your stare."

2. No Longer - The Kooks (lyrics)

The Kooks are another band that ChipperDemon just hadn't devoted a lot of time too appreciate till recently. "No Longer" lacks a little something, but over all the song carries itself with its simplistic nature and and heartfelt sung lyrics.

3. Maurine - Say Hi (lyrics)

One of the best Say Hi to Your Mom songs as of yet. It's one of those short and sweet songs that one cannot get enough of. The song is so endearing oozing of innocence with so much to connect to that don't be surprised if you listen to it more than once, in a row.

4. Train Song (Feist and Ben Gibbard) - Feist & Ben Gibbard (lyrics)

The first song to appear from the Dark Was the Night collection, "Train Song," is a beautiful mix of Feist and Ben Gibbard's lyrical talents. Originally done by Vashti Bunyan, "Train Song" is a song story leaving one, at the end, wondering what happens. Does the couple reunite in a passionate love affair founding the notion of true love? Or do they arrive and their fears are reality, true love does have bounds.

5. The King - Ivana XL (lyrics)

Ivana XL has been added to ChipperDemon's favorite female artists (there are a lot). The song has a beautiful voice ringing out such raw truth, "It’s much harder than just watching you leave Who cares? It’s easy. It was so easy." The rawness of breaking up and dealing with the anger is so effortlessly sung and plucked out for the listener. "I'm the king."

6. Brackett, WI - Bon Iver (lyrics)

Bon Iver is doing something right. His use of vocals and guitar patterns overbear the sometimes convoluted and heavy lyrics. Even when the lyrics aren't clear or even identifiable, the chorus tightens one throat and tears feel brewing.

7. Lay It Down - Peter Bjorn and John (lyrics)

When "Nothing to Worry About" popped onto Kanya West's blog with his proclamation of being the first to get the download from Peter Bjorn and John, ChipperDemon did a little head scratching, then an indepth search through West's blog and twitter account. "Lay It Down" is simply good, accented with unusual clacks and sounds with a, "shut the fuck up," indeed a favorite out of their new works.

8. Blood Pt 2 - Buck 65 Ft. Sufjan Stevens & Serengeti

As a song that is featured from Dark Was the Night that is a remix of another Dark Was the Night song, Blood Pt. 2 is by far better than "You Are the Blood" done by Sufjan Stevens, covering the Castanets. The song is just one giant picture description that feels so touchable. Featuring Sufjan's voice, the song doesn't quite leave it's unique sound and indie credit yet melds into a rap indie Sufjan masterpiece. "Bite me like fire ants, touch me like an old stamp."

9. Tightrope - Yeasayer (lyrics)

"Yeasayer" is another song that has really profound lyrics that carry the song. "So I think I can solve our problems by myself.." Perhaps the voice pleading so deeply also adds to the shared feeling of helplessness.

10. Sway - Heartless Bastards (lyrics)

As a second Heartless Bastards song, "Sway" is a splendid combination of beat driven moments with slow melodic riffs all supporting a song message of searching. "I' stumble and I sway into the room, and I fade, and I hope my darkest days are behind me." The song never breaks over a certain slowness keeping it in tune with the theme of just swaying and stumbling.

11. Feeling Good - My Brightest Diamond (lyrics)

Simply a lovely cover of a lovely song. "And I'm feeling good." If you're not belting this song in your car like your in a speakeasy standing on a hot stage next to Jack on the piano with a glass of scoth on the bench waiting for you, you should think about it.

12. Never Gonna Happen - Lily Allen (lyrics)

Lily Allen's It's Not Me, It's You album is probably her best effort yet. She's really developed a sense of taking her great lyrics and combining them with music that's well, more musical. The album maintains its theme and "Never Gonna Happen" is a great example of her ruthless, just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I don't kiss without heart.

13. Never Had Nobody Like You - M. Ward featuring Zooey Decshanel (lyrics)

M. Ward is great with a classical sound. Not sure if he's ever going to break out of it but as long as he's asking Zooey Deschanel to throw her voice into the song, there's no need for complaining. This song may not break from the M. Ward music sound but the lyrics are really something to behold. It's sweet and solid. "Honey, I ain't never had nobody like you."

14. Consolation Prize - Julie Doiron

Julie Doiron is a long time doted female artist in the ChipperDemon archives. With the announcement of a new album comming out, "Consolation Prize" was never in doubt of being included in the February compilation. While I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day takes a slight turn from I Woke Myself Up, it is still an album filled Jullie Doiron goodness. This month's bonus track, "Nice to Come Home," is so far the most loved song from the new album.

15. The Stars Just Blink For Us - Say Hi (lyrics)

The second Say Hi song to appear on the CD and not the last. Upon first listen, "The Stars Just Blink For Us" did not appear as one of Say Hi's best works but the song has a tendency to linger in the ear drum and surface itself throughout one's day making it a song hard to ignore.

16. My Night with the Prostitute from Marsaille - Beirut (lyrics)

Beirut's latest album creation was not as impressive as expected, however, "My Night with the Prostitute from Marsaille" is a fairly strong track in comparison to the rest of Beirut's good song collection.

17. Service Bell - Grizzly Bear + Feist

The last of the Dark Was the Night songs, "Service Bell" found its way onto music blogs fairly early. The song escaped the ChipperDemon ears a couple times before it was embraced and now fully appreciated. The simplicity of the song gives it its strength and the combination of vocals just ring sweetly.

18. Searching for the Ghost (Acoustic) - Heartless Bastards (lyrics)

A close second favorite of the Heartless Bastards' songs, "Searching for the Ghost" is simply just another great rock ballad. The song feels somewhat more down to reality, and connectable than "Sway" maintaining a slow and sweet pace. The singing in "Searching for the Ghost" is also the hardest sounding. It's not as melodic and soft as the others making it feel just that much more raw of a listen.

19. My Catharsis - Dan Bull

Not quite sure why this song is on the CD. After the CD was compiled it's been pretty easy to skip this song. Perhaps it's the placement of the song, or perhaps "My Catharsis," in comparison to its neighboring songs, just doesn't seem to stand up and feel worthy of a listen.

20. Appaloosa! Whiplash - Snowblink

Snowblink, an older addition to this compilation, seems to lose itself within the compilation especially amidst Ivana XL, however, "Appaloosa! Whiplash" is a lovely song to listen to. The vocals are sweet and tender while the lyrics lose themselves in the melody and the joy of just hearing lovely sounds.

21. Sweetie Pie - Ivana XL (lyrics)

"Sweetie Pie" in addition to the previous Ivana XL tracks makes up the best songs by Ivana XL thus far. Her lyrics are tender and poignant they make breaking up sound so sweet. Lyrically, it's one of the best.

22. November Was White, December Was Grey - Say Hi (lyrics)

This is another Say Hi song that took some working into. When word was out that Say Hi was coming out with a new CD, "November Was White, December Was Grey" was the single posted. At first the song felt week, but in the end it really became a loved track. Say Hi must have a way of charming listeners. Or perhaps the image of November and December is just too hard to not connect with. Either way, a great song to finish out the CD.

Title?

December turned out to be a very exciting music month. Every now and then it seems ChipperDemon comes across a few artists that can simply not be ignored and thusly tend to dominate the CD. This month Dr. Dog, Adele and the last minute addition of Munchausen Proxy, Zooey Deschanel's band in Yes Man, really make up the whole collection. This month also breaks away a bit from the indie genre and really boasts the healthy addition of hip-hop and blues.

I Wouldn't Buy You A Sweater If It Came With A Gas Card

November feels fairly similar to last year's November, somewhat uneventful. The songs are all great but the compilation seems to lack something. The best song would be the surprising Florence and the Machine's Kiss With a Fist followed by a few other peppy tracks. Perhaps all the songs sound a little too much alike or maybe it's filled with too many unknown names. The Decemberists and The Killers are certainly news heavy names but the rest fall a little short on the recognition scale and provide too many new sounds for one CD compilation to support.

Tracklist as follows:
1. Science Fiction – French Miami
This 2 year old band, French Miami landed themselves a spot on Rolling Stone's November "Buzz List" and for good reason. In mid-November the band released their debut LP with hot hit tracks, "Science Fiction" and "The Goddamn Best." Out of San Francisco this trio delivers a Joy Division sound and mixes it up with quick guitar licks and killer shouting choruses. Between the slow but guitar brilliant "Science Fiction" and the power chord heavy "The Goddamn Best"; it was a battle between which would make it onto the November compilation, but the Ian Curtis - like voice pulled it through to be the first track giving the compilation's slow start.

2. No One Does It Like You – Department of Eagles (lyrics)
In November, Department of Eagles released their LP, In Ear Park, filled with delightful simple tracks. "No One Does It Like You" is the quintessential old sound yet entirely new and delicious. The song is incredibly simple with basic lyrics, basic instrumentals and has this overall essence of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band mixed with the Monotones. Started in NYU, this duet (Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear and Fred Nicolaus) stick out in this CD compilation.

3. Spaceman – The Killers (lyrics)
Just three days before Thanksgiving The Killers released their 4th full length album, Day & Age, with "Human" as their 80's-esque (picturing siting on the edge of a bed wearing a head band and jean jacket pushed up the arm looking at a photo just after doing pirouettes) single. The Killers do not really deviate from their typical sound in Day & Age, however, "Spaceman" does have one of their best attributes, a deviated subject. In addition to The Killer's catchy beats and tongue catching choruses, "Spaceman" is just odd enough to not feel disconnected but to enjoy with a bit of distance. The album as a whole is a little "too The Killers" but is a pleasant listen. "Joy Ride" and the bonus track, "A Cripling Blow," are some of the really good songs of the album and may find their way on the next Best of Rest collection

4. The Sun Ain't Shining No More – The Asteroids Galaxy Tour
Another iPod commercial slut, danish band The Asteroids Galaxy Tour featured their song "Around the Bend" from their debut EP release. With a beginning similar to CSS's "Music is My Hot Hot Sex" it feels appropriate for the commercial. However, "The Sun Ain't Shining No More" is significantly different with a 70's beginning and an 80's shrill female voice hovering over the slow melody. The chorus, "He leaves my soul on the floor like a dog" just feels right.

5. Live for the Sounds – Brooke Waggoner (lyrics)
From Heal for the Honey, Brooke Waggoner's impressive full length album, "Live for the Sounds" transitions the mix into a lighter sound led by piano and violin. Featured on both the New York Post and NPR for her talent, Brooke Waggoner adds a complicated yet light lovely short ditty for ChipperDemon. Her voice is light and blends smoothly with the music acting almost as an instrument itself. The song also serves as a fantastic transition song.

6. The Wolf – Miniature Tigers (lyrics)
Miniature Tigers produced a fabulous light and catchy album, Tell it to the Volcano, that is reminiscent of high school with its simplistic song lyrics about boys and girls liking each other. "I will buy you things, like diamond rings." Miniature Tigers, based out of Phoenix, has a sound that indie-pop junkies can never get enough of. The album, acclaimed by Spin Magazine, is fun and filled with a great melodies bound to cling to one's eardrums. Rolling Stone, displaying great foresight, placed Miniature Tigers as one of the top 25 bands on Myspace back in 2006. "The Wolf" is a prime example of their brilliant work.

7. Record Year – The Decemberists (lyrics)
Over the past three months The Decemberists have been producing and releasing a three volume work, Always a Bridesmaid: A Singles Series. In true Decemberists fashion the songs act as little epics telling full stories all related to an apparent abundance of rain. "Record Year" from the 3rd Volume, Record Year for Rainfall, is a beautiful melodramatic track and a delightful use of Colin Meloy's distinct voice

8. Strobelight Honey – El Paso Hot Button
With a voice reeking of Jack White, El Paso Hot Button transitions the compilation into a strong beat and guitar heavy song. "Body and soul and mind is not in the pre-nup she says." "Strobelight Honey" is a rock song set to the scene of the club providing a bit of an odd and attractive sound-image relationship.

9. Hole in the Middle – Emily Jane White (lyrics)
It's amazing this track went over ChipperDemon's ears especially last month while one of Emily Jane White's more popular tracks, "Wild Tigers I've Known," from her album Dark Undercoat was in consideration. Hole In the Middle, on the other hand, is just an amazing song grasping at the inner-self, "Everybody does a little dance with the devil." Her voice feels in a way honest with it's lowness kind of looking one in the eye, "let's be frank."

10. We On Top a 'Dis – Ezra Bang & Hot Machine
ChipperDemon's token rap track, "We On Top a 'Dis", not only provides the hip hop sound but interjects quick rhymes and is loaded with culture relevant names. While a good deal of the song feels unconnected and a little odd, the beat is hard to ignore. As a 5 person set up Ezra Bang & Hot Machine are quite the combination. Is it possible they'll be seen on another ChipperDemon collection? Let's just say, we won't be looking but wouldn't be surprised if they found us.

11. Kiss With a Fist – Florence and the Machine (lyrics)
Perhaps one of the best songs of the whole compilation this very short production of the ChipperDemon veteran, Florence and the Machine busts out with a far different sound, produced, controlled and singing an original. Subject reminiscent of Kate Nash the song, metaphoric or not, is brilliant and extremely vivid. The song's got fantastic energy and such a great rock sound it ends far too quickly.

12. Black Fur – Fredrik
Slow and lulling a wonderful melody "Black Fur" is one of Fredrik's prettiest songs. It has the ability to lose the listener in fantastic harmony and vague lyrics.

13. Keep Yourself Warm – Frightened Rabbit (lyrics)
Skillfully a heartfelt lyric strong song, "Keep Yourself Warm," sneaks its way into the head dropping lyrics that are simply just not welcome, especially the chorus, "It takes more than fucking someone you don't know to keep warm.... you won't find love in a hole." Midnight Organ Fight seems to be a fairly typical dramatic Scottish album. The song, while poignant and vivid, is sneaky and can be troublesome in church parking lots.

14. Tambourine – The Happy Hollows
Similar to ChipperDemon's favorite, Land of Talk, The Happy Hollows are electric guitar geniuses skillfully using discordance as their best strength. Using a talk-like singing approach dropping lines about Billy Corgan, it feels strange to enjoy yet impossible to ignore. To further the odd enjoyment, the song crashes at the end expressing great distress.

15. Sleepy Tigers – Her Space Holiday (lyrics)
Bringing the compilation back to simplicity and a light hearted sound, "Sleepy Tigers," wins the compilation over just with, "dancing round our sleepy clothes." The song is crisp chanting a simple sentiment of just liking someone else and wanting to spend time with enough.

16. Take Care – Hooray for Earth
Transitioning into a very Killers like sound with a lingering chorus the song continues the pleasant sentiment of enjoying another's company, "Push me hard cause you know that I'm slack and it's a proven fact I'm never going no where without you." Based out of Boston, Hooray for Earth feels European and perhaps that is their strength, imitating a foreign sound with ease. While the song is a typical 80's synth-pop, like a good deal of the songs ChipperDemon bends toward, it beats through and the fairly long song feels minuscule.

17. Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare – Matt and Kim
Really, it's the drum that makes this song. The very catchy chorus does of course assist but it's the simple repeated piano lick and clap like drum beat that attracts the ear and head bobbing. Matt and Kim, a fairly unknown music force, is supposedly taking this single, "Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare,"to lead a second album into their music recognition.

18. Lazy Eye – Silversun Pickup (lyrics)
The sound feels extremely 1990s and perhaps that is how Silversun Pickup found themselves onto the compilation with a 2 year old song, but somehow it's too hard to pass by. For the most part its the vocals that give "Lazy Eye" its pungency while the very simple guitar keeps it flowing. The screaming chorus brings it all together cranking itself up on the stereo.

19. House Fire – Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin (lyrics)
In the last week of October, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin came out with their latest collection of pop music genius, Pershing, which features the fantastic track, "Modern Mystery." Starting with a simple guitar riff that leads into light vocals growing slightly more complicated into a fairly anti-climatic but delightful chorus. The song gives listeners a chance to enjoy simple but fantastic music with poignant lyrics. However the song "House Fire" from their first full length album starts with a fantastically piano, guitar, and drum complicated intro and transitions into this elongated guitar sound guiding the ear through the bridge for an Elliot Smith-esque chorus making a track from this compilation not to forget.

Duets of Dodging Acorns

This month is certainly dominated by boy/girl duets and a glorious amount of terrific tracks. Each song is delightful in its own unique way between the musically complex and the lyrically genius. Not every song will be a favorite for ChipperDemon listeners but there is at least one favorite for every listener.

October made it hard for there to be a bad set of songs with the release of some major beat thumpers. TV on the Radio came out with their new album recently and was a second place finalist for this month's compilation with "Dancing Choose," which just goes to show how stiff the competition was. Ben Folds came out with his new CD, and if it weren't his collaboration with ChipperDemon's favorite Russian musician, Regina Spektor, who knows if he would have even gotten an honorable mention. Ingrid Michaelson, whom you may recognize from last October's mix, has also come out with her new album and has proven to just get better and better.

To have also improved over the year is Los Campesinos! with their new released stuff. They made an appearance on last November's CD. To top off all the big name releases, Jukebox the Ghost, from June, April and October, has been reported to be in the studio and mixing up some good stuff for their next album. Luckily, we got a hold of the demo and are more than excited to include two of their premature productions in October's collection. Aside from the known names there are quite a few new musicians added to ChipperDemon's artist folder this month as well. Mother Mother and Jared Mees and the Grown Children are happy additions.

Tracklist as follows:

1. You, Me & the Bourgeoisie - The Submarines (lyrics)

Because ChipperDemon consistently collects commercial songs (this track is featured in iPhone's new 3G phone commercial) we give you the delightful Submarines. The chorus insists on ChipperDemon's attention, "who are we to breakdown? every day we wake up, we choose love, choose light, we try, it's too easy to just fall apart." Honeysuckle Weeks (May 2008) is there second album, making an appearance on Nip/Tuck and Grey's Anatomy and then later recording a version of "Little Boxes" for the show Weeds. Apple wasn't the first to snag this duo.

2. Bees - Jared Mees and the Grown Children (lyrics)

With the release of Caffeine Alcohol Sunshine Money (October 2008), Jared Mees exemplifies the fantastic possibilities of boy/girl voice collaborations. Between the poppy "Friday Night," lyric heavy "Tallest Building in Hell" and twang filled "Black Coffee," the album is quite versatile and worth an extensive listen. It's hard not to love a band when their songs feel light and with simple lyrics but complex music to support it. Also, their record label is called Tender Loving Empire, it's just hard not to fall in love with that. "The radio is on and it's turning my heart into gold."

3. Miserabilia - Los Campesinos! (lyrics)

Los Campesinos! came out with a surprising amount of great tracks on their new set of works with their signature boy/girl use. We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed (October 2008) consists of slightly more lyric and much more music strong tracks making album number two quite a fantastic addition to ChipperDemon's Los Campesinos! collection. "Miserabilia" burts on the mix with great bits of imagery, "We got nostalgic, ended up filling shoe boxes with vomit." The chorus also just screams out making it a very powerful song.

4. Anticlimax - Kat Flint (lyrics)

This track mixes up the beginning of the compilation a little bit. It breaks from the energy building and delights one with a lovely guitar riff into a fantastic set of lyrics. "I try to decide to be good when I'm lonely, but doo doo doo doo doo doo, I can't." Kat Flint's Dirty Birds (September 2008) features various instrumental tracks with clever lyrics. There's nothing all together unique about her music style, however, credit is always due to musically talented clever lyrcists. She has certainly been added to the ChipperDemon must watch list.

5. Midnight Blues - The Detroit Cobras (lyrics)

Ever since the Black Keys came out with their last album, rock/blues heavy songs have been like candy. This track from the Detroit Cobras' Mink Rat or Rabbit (1998), a cover from Charlie Rich back in the 1950s, offers a delirously delicious electric guitar and low sultry smoker's voice that belts this wonderful bridge, "Everytime I feel a little bit free, I hear those blues, midnight blues." And then the best lyric of the song, "I just can't help but feel a little bit chained, everytime I hear you call my name." This Detroit Cobra cover is just pure ear candy.

6. Old Friend - Future Islands (lyrics)

To continue the pattern of unexpected sounding tracks this 80s-esque synthpop sound from Baltimore's Future Islands follows "Midnight Blues" quite nicely and continues this rather quick beat that picks up the pace of the compilation. Future Islands, formed in Greenville, NC, dropped Wave Like Home (September 2008) with a plethora of bumping beats worth listening to. The only noteable lyric, "I whisper the tongue like an old friend" is all the song needs, it's really the music that gives it its charm.

7. Sociopath - Anya Marina (lyrics)

This absolute gem of a song is just a demo of what is to come from this flirtatious rock sound off of Slow & Steady Seduction Phase II (December 2008). It wouldn't be expected that this clever lyrcist would be featured on MTV and nominated for a Best Pop award, but she was. The rest of the songs on the album are quite poppy, a little less clever, but a few of them are delightful. "Sociopath" wins its listeners greatly with, "I'm pathologically addicted to what you call a dickhead." The song is just masochistically enjoyable.

8. Nobody - Jukebox the Ghost (lyrics)

With the intention of Jukebox the Ghost making an earlier appearance on the compilation, "Nobody" just fits so well right after "Sociopath." "Nobody" is a little masochistic itself and rings a bit of similar sentiment as Los Campesinos' "Miserabilia." However, Jukebox the Ghost jumps into the mix with their piano strong, significant vocal style and finger tapping crescendos. It's exciting to see them back on the music scene so soon after their debut album, Let Live and Let Ghosts (April 2008).

9. Crooked Teeth - Oliver Thiessen (lyrics)

Of all of the songs Oliver Thiessen seems to have come up with, "Crooked Teeth" stands out by a great deal. It has this eerie simple sound that lulls and sways its listeners. His voice guides through the song but lets one get lost in imagery of moonlit nights and golden fields. The sentiment gets a little lost with complicated lyrics but holds the song together with the beginning, "Your teeth are crooked from all the lies you ate... you thought it was love but you were wrong." It's the song's simplicity that really makes it stand out.

10. You & I - Ingrid Michaelson (lyrics)

This track is another fantastic boy/girl duet done by the amazing Ingrid Michaelson. Her new album, Be OK (October 2008), is a wonderful series of Ingrid original tracks. Her ability to write about such simplistic messages in her somewhat peppy style is an attribute unmatched. "You & I" is just one of many great songs but definitely exemplifies her lyrical talent. "I want to do what bunnies do with you if you know what I mean" coming from any other artist would be entirely different, she manages to say it with innocence and charm, maybe it's because its accomponied by a eukelelea. Proceeds from her new album also go toward Stand Up To Cancer. "Baby, how we spoon like no one else."

11. Hayloft - Mother Mother (lyrics)

This rather fast paced track knocks the mix up a notch and leads listeners into this odd imagery but has such an unexpected sound that it holds attention. "Young lovers with their legs tied up in knots." Mother Mother is the first Canadian band to pop up on this month's compilation and does not disapoint. While the second track of theirs from O My (September 2008) on this mix is perhaps the superior of the two, the combination of them both shows their impressive variety.

12. I Love You - Esser (lyrics)

Perhaps one of the catchiest songs on the mix, Esser's "I Love You" will find its way into the everyday life constantly repeating, "Love is no excuse for bad art." Esser is by far one of the oddest artists that ChipperDemon seems to have come across. With a lack of internet literature on the band and their London location they are almost impossible to research. "I wish I could find the words, to tell you how I feel, oh these cold and tainted syllables" will haunt one's eardrums; beware.

13. You Don't Know Me (Featuring Regina Spektor) - Ben Folds (lyrics)

With no offense to Ben Folds, he has this very repetitive sound with his voice. While he appears to have an immense amount of song composition talent, his songs nearly always fall flat in some way. Yet! with Regina Spektor of the other end of the piano bench the creation of one of the best songs this year comes out onto a ChipperDemon compilation. With an excellent mix of beat and Regina's subtle influence, "You Don't Know Me" is outstanding ditty to bob to from Way to Normal (September 2008).

14. Soo Clean - St. Paul Slim

It's not often that ChipperDemon features a rap song, so when we do we like to think it's because it is just that great of a song. St. Paul Slim, while very vulgar, has accomplished a rather brilliant set of lyrics in "Soo Clean." "I wouldn't buy your shit if it came with a gas card" and "I'm old school like the woolly mammoth" are just a couple of the lines that brought this song onto this month's compilation.

15. Me + Your Daughter - Natalie Portman's Shaved Head (lyrics)

Aside from having a song title-esque band name, Natalie Portman's Shaved Head is an of course ChipperDemon loved band. Their simplistic fun song subjects and boogie inducing sound inspires the lamest to move even just a little. "Me + Your Daughter" off of Glistening Pleasure (July 2008) is original and smile producing with it's naughty overcast on the high school days that these kids are not far from leaving behind. "Brothers like me know to be squeeky clean, very cool for the parents... me and your daughter touching my body, she is so lovely." It makes one want to protect all high school girls they come across.

16. Total Job - The Faint (lyrics)

It does seem a little unfair to include The Faint on a second compilation in a row considering how many songs had to be cut but "calling Sydney" just sticks in the head and their unique sound is needed for some variety among the entire compilation. It is also just hard to avoid The Faint's new album, Fasciinatiion (August 2008), which has just been such a long wait for ChipperDemon.

17. Boys with Girlfriends - Meiko (lyrics)

Meiko is certainly not new to ChipperDemon but "Boys with Girlfriends" off her new self titled album (September 2008) is just a great song. Following a theme with many of the songs on this mix, the simple and down to Earth message about such an every day thing that isn't heard that often is really Meiko's strength. While some of her songs are tear inducing she also has sweet and innocent tracks as might be remembered from "How Lucky We Are" on June's A Year's Worth of Treasured Trash. "I know better not to be friends with boys with girlfriends" how precious.

18. Mistletoe - Jukebox the Ghost (lyrics)

Again, just another fantastic track from Jukebox the Ghost. It is perhaps too much of a tease to have two of their pre-recorded songs so early but who can wait for great music? As for this song, "Don't look at me like another lost soul" grapples at those heart strings out of the chorus. It's also somewhat refreshing and interesting to center a song on such a symbol rich object "Oh my mistletoe, called me up on the phone." With the holidays coming up around the corner, this is sure to be track repeated throughout the coming months.

19. My Body is a Cage - Sara Lov (lyrics)

Covering Arcade Fire, "My Body is a Cage" by Sara Lov on her 5 song collection, The Young Eyes ep, has a lovely melody and somber message that is few and far between on this collection. Her voice carries the song and is probably why her version is slightly stronger than Arcade Fire.

20. Wrecking Ball - Mother Mother (lyrics)

Mother Mother does a great job of using imagery to stage their songs. While they are not telling a story and providing the listener with a well illustrated song they do have lovely metaphors. The image of a fist as a wrecking ball is poinant and easy to visualize. Mother Mother has definitely proven their skill and versatile song approach, which is always recognized and appreciated.
