“Are you sure? I’m not sure if I remember it correctly.”

“Of course you do, you’ve told it to me thousands of times.”

                “All right, if you’re sure.”

                “I’m sure.”

“There once was a princess who lived in a faraway land…”

                “Was the princess pretty?”

“Sure was the prettiest girl in the whole land, she had long black hair and brilliant blue eyes. You know this already. Anyway, the princess lived up in her big castle and spent her days learning how to one day be queen.

“She spent so much time learning that she forgot to do things other girls would do. So when the time came that she was done learning she realized that she had no idea how to go about finding herself a prince.”

“Why did she need a prince?”

“Well, she needed someone to take out the trash obviously, which for a prince meant protecting the princess against anyone who would do the princess harm.”

“Who would want to harm the princess?”

“The kingdom had many enemies, because it was a beautiful and prosperous land. There will always be people that resent people that have more than they do, and will want to take it from them.”

                “Oh.”

“Yes, anyway, the princess didn’t know how to find herself a prince, so she went and asked the wise women of the kingdom, because the kingdom had long ago realized that women made better wise men than the men did, and asked how she should go about finding herself a prince.

“The wise women told her that she should hold a tournament, a competition of skill. This would allow her to see who the most able man in all the land was. The princess thought this was a grand idea and so the tournament was formed and brave knights and princes from all over the place came to compete, because the princess was stunningly beautiful and the kingdom was prosperous.

“For three days the men performed feats of bravery and strength until it came down to just three men. The first was very strong, the strongest of them all, but very cruel. The second was very handsome, the handsomest of the all, but very vain. The third was very plain, but had skill, strength, and most of all compassion.

“The day of the joust came, but the princess canceled it. She had already made her choice.

“The strong man thought to himself, she has chosen me for my strength, and I shall rule over this land and conquer my neighbors.

“The vain man thought to himself, she has chosen me for my looks, and I shall rule over this land and make myself a harem.

“The plain man thought nothing of himself, merely wanted to hear the princess’ decision. He knew that she would pick the best man for the kingdom. The strong man would be able to protect her. The vain man would be able to charm her neighbors. He would not be able to do much. Surely she would not choose him.

“The princess stood before the crowd. She looked regal and magnificent.

“Good sir knight, she said to the strong man, you have proven yourself a man of great strength. However, with your actions and conduct you have shown that you have great cruelty in your heart. I cannot have that by my side as I rule my kingdom.

“With that the strong man growled in anger and was escorted off by the princess’ royal guard.

“Good sir knight, she said to the vain man, you have proven yourself skilled and to be possessed of great charisma. However, you have also proven yourself to be egotistical and self-serving. I cannot have that by my side as I rule my kingdom.

“The vain man shrugged, bowed low, and left the field unescorted.

“Finally she turned to the third man, the plain man. He was currently in a state of shock, his two competitors were gone, and that left only him. He couldn’t be the choice, could he?

“Good sir knight, she began, a look of adoration in her eyes, you have proven yourself to possess skill and talent. Perhaps not as much as others, but you possess one thing that many others do not.

“You have proven yourself to be kind. While you took every action to defeat your enemies, you did not harm them more than was required, and showed the utmost decency towards them. This is what I am looking for as I rule my kingdom. A kind man that will rule by my side, helping to guide this kingdom to a new age of prosperity.

“And so the princess and the plain man were married, and he became the prince. Eventually the queen and king passed away, and the princess and prince took over ruling the kingdom. The wisdom of the new queen and the kindness of the new king lead the kingdom into a golden age of peace and prosperity that lasted a thousand years.”

                “Thank you daddy.”

With that the woman’s father stood up, he was old and wizened. He shuffled over to the door to the cell and was let out by the guard. After he left two guards came into the room and the woman stood tall and proud. She had long black hair and brilliant blue eyes.

The guards marched her out of the prison grounds and the woman walked with pride and dignity, for she had been the leader of a popularist uprising against a corrupt government. While her uprising had ultimately failed, betrayed from within, she had made her mark. The government would fear the people now, as they should, and ultimately they would collapse.

The guards took her outside and set her against the wall. They offered her a blindfold but she refused. She would meet this with eyes open. Twenty paces away a line of ten soldiers stood; weapons at their sides.

“Ready!” the soldier’s leader said, and they brought their weapons to bear.

“Aim!” the soldier’s leader said, and they aimed their weapons at the woman.

“Fire!” the soldier’s leader said, and they fired.

As she felt the rounds hitting her body, as she crumpled on the ground, as she died, she had only one regret.

She had never met her plain man.

[..] Thus a typical painting depends on visual satisfaction but remains ocular and does not reverberate in our minds until the associations with ideas begins. A book remains short of a cognitive experience in its complexity, especially if it fails to move us to reflect and merely thrills us for the time of reading. We need critics to convince us of a painting’s value and scholars to interpret the place of a given book in the history of similar ones. These experiences are second-hand or even more hands removed.

But with some knowledge, skill, talent, or interest in music, a new part of human sensory faculties can emerge or be elicited, bypassing the mere visual or intellectual and striking directly at a mood, an atmosphere, a brooding or lightness, depending on the music taken seriously.

Some sort of music moves somebody somewhere.
