Nerves in general, especially nerve roots, are not getting actually “pinched” as in getting a kink in it, but instead, most of the situations people are describing as a pinched nerve, is actually a situation in which there is a pressure increase (or a partial pressure increase) on the nerve. From experiments in nerve physiology, we know that nerves do not respond well to increase pressure on them, and indeed, even a relatively small increase in pressure can have dramatic effects and in causing nerve pathology. In the area where the nerve exits the spinal cord, and moves outward to supply the body, any decrease in the patency, or opening size of the “hole between the spinal bones” or “intervertebral foramen” can have a disastrous effect on nerve function. A decrease in the size of the opening of the intervertebral foramen is called “foraminal stenosis” and a decrease in the size of the canal which transmits the spinal cord, is called spinal canal stenosis. Now, there is not a pill for this ill. In other words, one can take pain killers and muscle relaxants until they are coming out of your ears, and if one still have improper alignment, or lack of movement of a spinal segment, in combination with improper alignment, then drugs won’t fix it. Much like a shoulder which has become dislocated, there needs to be a physical intervention to bring back proper alignment and proper function. How do you tell the difference between a pinched nerve and a muscle knot?

Since yesterday morning, my upper left back has been hurting me because I slept on it wrong. Yesterday, it felt like a muscle knot and it felt more relieved when rubbed. But today, it still hurts a lot but it feels like a pinched nerve. I don’t know which one it is, so I don’t know how to treat it. HELP!!! Any advice is accepted. Thanks in advance!

I have been experiencing back pain (localized to the middle-to-upper right region of my back) all day, especially when I take a deep breath. I’ve also noticed I get the pain when I move my right arm in certain directions, as well as if I twist my back to the right or left. But the pain is the worst when I take a deep breath. Could this just be a muscle strain? I’m not sure if pain from a muscle strain can be felt from taking a deep breath. Any advice and/or information would be appreciated.

I am 19 weeks and have been diagnosed with Sciatica. I am in so much pain all the time. It doesn’t matter if I am sitting, standing or laying, I get no comfort. My doctor just keeps saying “Give it time, or it should go away on its own”. Pregnancy is supposed to be enjoyable and I am in so much pain that I don’t want to be pregnant and I hate that I feel this way. Any suggestions?
