Pepper Spray Cop Gone Desi

The shocking incident that took place at UC Davis on Friday November 18th features Lt. John Pike of pepper spraying peaceful student protesters who were sitting on the ground. The incident has turned into a hilarious internet meme overnight. Social media is becoming saturated with the image of Lieutenant John Pike, pepper spraying almost anything imaginable. All things "desi" were not spared. Here are a few that we found:

Lieutenant John Pike superimposed on what could possibly be the Goddess Kali. Kind of appropriate since she is associated with power and death.

Of course he should be spraying the "father" of peaceful demonstration. Lieutenant John Pike would have fit right in with Brigadier-General Reginald E.H. Dyer's regiment during the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

Okay, maybe a little off the desi tip but we like Banksy and there is a cow in the image and she could be sacred.

Skateboarding in India

This is not something that we see too often in India. Probably due to the traffic and the possibility of being clotheslined by two donkeys tied neck to neck. The donkey part is a true story that actually happened to a cyclist that didn't see the rope as the donkeys stampeded towards him.

To shortly sum it up, there are three skateboarding doods featured in a film that is directed by Studio Ores & Guilhem Machenaud. It takes place in Bangalore, Jaipur, New Delhi and Agra - 2011. Surprisingly the skateboarders where brave enough to ride on Indian roads.

The filming is sincerely well done and captures daily life in these Indian cities. The skateboarders do their thing and the local on-lookers do what they always do when they see something interesting. They watch and cheer if they like what they see or simply go about their daily routine. It's also great to see that locals participate in the action.

NYC is the Center of the World

Cover of the Village Voice - Vol. LVI No. 42 dated October 19-25, 2011

On one of those groggy Monday morning commutes, I noticed the Village Voice cover popping out at me through the sticker ladened Plexiglas of its container. I usually don't notice these things as my motive is to get to my office on time. But this cover was adorned with the Taj Mahal. Bewilderment made me stop and grab a copy. Why was the Taj Mahal on a New York City publication?

The Taj Mahal is ingrained in our memories as a symbol of India. Exploited by all Indian travel brochures and adopted by numerous Indian restaurants for its namsake. Why anyone would name a restaurant after the world's most famous mausoleum is beyond me. Maybe the food must be to die for? If you have interest in how the rest of the world perceives India, the Taj Mahal, curry and snake charmers are probably what pops into the minds of the not so astute.

Anyway the Village Voice named New York City as the "Center of the World" due to the international community that makes it one of the most unique places on earth. London must be pissed off but they did put the Tower Bridge in the image.

The cover could have been a little different. A little less touristy and a little more "real" as they say in Brooklyn. Perhaps there is a subway stop on the G Train that I have never seen? Possibly the MTA's Art's for Transit program commissioned an international destination poster? Something that would make us want to be anywhere but a filthy and crowded subway car. Why not the Eiffel Tower, Taj Mahal, Great Wall of China, Tower Bridge and St. Basil's Cathedral? Just block out that subway car scent and person picking their nose.

Rick Perry Corndog Picture Pulled by Facebook

I was surprised to open my Facebook today. I was searching for "likes" on a re-post. To my surprise, the post was stripped from Facebook in it's entirety. When did Facebook start censoring posts like Blockbuster censored videos? Does Rick Perry's camp have control over the folks at Facebook?

The post was an image, created by Provincetown Magazine of GOP front runner Rick Perry's famous corn dog indulging image, superimposed on a portion of Michael Angelo's Sistine Chapel's ceiling painting.

I cannot understand why Facebook censorsed the Rick Perry, Corndog, Sistine Chapel image? Rick Perry is an all American, gun toting GOP hopeful who believes in Christianity. Michael Angelo created the most sought after attraction at the Vatican. The Photoshoped image is the work of a genius. Maybe the Vatican granted Rick Perry to eat in the Sistine Chapel on America Corndog appreciation day?

Shame on you Facebook. You have now hurt America, the Corndog Consortium of America, the Vatican, the Republican Party, Photoshop, the NRA, the artist of the image and most of all the Facebook users that trusted you to allow them to share friendly images.

There are far worst things that are posted on Facebook. I don't like when people post about bathroom breaks. Viral, fecal matter is disturbing. Censor those posts but leave my appreciation of art alone.

I was enjoying the popularity of the post and like getting "likes". It reminds me of the gold stickers that I received from my kindergarten teacher when I resisted a backwards "e" in handwriting.

Bring on Hurricane Irene F.O.B. Style

Now that there are a series of speculated evactions slated for the New York City metro area, it is time to start thinking about non-perishable rations. Just in case we loose electricity.

After thinking about my current inventory, I realized that I had some fresh packets of Haldiram's "Nut Cracker". Which is is virtually waterproof and comes in a nice resealable packet. Good for wading though deep waters when I need to flee my apartment in rising waters.

Nut Crackers are especially good with a nice crisp, cold lager. Of course without power, I may have to resort to having them with warm beer. It would certainly be an interesting way to endulge in the delectible, spicy snack. Keeping beer cold is a hard thing to come by when you are roughing it. Think of Nut Crackers as an Indian trail mix with a serious kick. This trail mix should sustain me for at least a day.

Signing off as I search for flashlights, batteries, candles, bottled water and chill some beer.

Social Chaat Cart

Sometimes the "cart-walas" (food cart - street food) need a marketing campaign to help them stand out in front of the others.

What's better and more recognizable than social networking, which doesn't cost you anything to use? Why not capitalize on the most popular methods of virtual networks? Sure they sell "Chaat" which could be confused with "chat" and makes it "virtually" clever and adds to the kitchiness.

Gordon Ramsay Roughs it in, India

We all know the Gordon Ramsay for his famous culinary driven, television shows. Unbeknownst to me was the three part (UK) series called, "Gordon's Great Escape", which take Gordon to India for the first time in is life. I luckily discovered the series via Netflix. They stream it instantly. I would feel strange, exhausting my three DVD maximum on Gordon.

Gordon does a fantastic job being Gordon. His crass attitude shines with the not so streamlined culinary approaches that he is used to in the western world. He also lacks the comforts of kitchens that he is used to. There are hilarious moments where his brutish vocabulary comes out and his hosts either, don't understand or just blow him off. This is probably attributed to the fact that he is not that famous in, India.

He clearly knows his Indian cooking:

I grew up with a love of Indian food. We had a flat in Birmingham and our landlord was Indian so my mum learned how to perfect these amazing curries. There's something quite scary about going to a country you've never been before. But the flavours, the spices, the people and the respect for food was second to none.

It's nice to know that The Guardian associates, all things Indian with "Slumdog Millionaire". Especially with the influence that Indians have in the UK. Great to see that Gordon blew off the slumdog part.

Definitely watch the the series even if you really know your butter chicken.

A surprising segment was when Gordon heads into the Bastar wilderness in search of little known chutney.Thanks to the Dhuruva tribe, he discovers that the famous chutney is made from ants and ant eggs! Indians are quick to think that insect cuisine is limited to far East Asia and not in their back yard. Then again, with a billion plus Indians, there must be a tribe that eats insects somewhere in, India.

Gordon even gets to ride a "Bullet Enfield" which we celebrate on one of our Chor Bazaar t-shirts.

My respect for Gordon has heightened since watching this series. Nice work!

Box Cutter T-shirt, Really?

I stumbled on this t-shirt by chance and couldn't help but post it for it bewilderment.

The description from stockboydesigns's on Etsy:

These days the misuse of box cutters has become a real problem. These tools in the wrong hands can cause some serious damage. In an effort to raise awareness about the epidemic, I have created this bold design. So show that you use box cutters responsibly by adding this shirt to your wardrobe.

We all know what box cutters insinuate. What "stockboydesign" did not take into consideration is the reaction from airport security if someone from the Middle East or South Asian decent rocked one of these while trying to check in?

The irony is the dood pictured (above) with the t-shirt. I don't think that he would have much of a problem with security.

Now imagine Faisal Shahzad with the same t-shirt. Chances are, that he is going to miss his flight.

I am still puzzled by the idea, that the box cutter graphic teaches us about box cutters responsibly. Where is the epidemic anyway?

Race Specific Choking Signs in NYC

Of course choking is no joking matter but on a recent visit to a Chinese Take out place in Brooklyn, NY I found the poster above. I often wonder, what intern was assigned this type of project? Out of spite, did they purposely design the characters to look deranged?

Sure it looks like your average choking assistance poster but it was race specific! I had never seen one of these before. I was used to the current, colorful posters that replaced these (below).

The new posters were designed by students at the Parson's School of Design. They managed to add some "Constructivism" to the original posters that are required by the New York City Health Department for restaurants and food services businesses. Yes they are ghastly, but they are a familiar site at all New York City restaurants.

Of course this got me wondering about the choking poster for Indian restaurants. I did a search and nothing came up, so I decided to develop one using, the ultimate Indian couple, Shahrukh and Kajol.

Lets hope that Kajol can dislodge the Chicken Vindaloo from Shahrukh. She looks a bit more worried than him. Shahrukh looks like he is posing for the Paparazzi and even enjoying when Kajol sticks her fingers in his mouth.

A couple of interesting finds at a Indian grocery store in Massachusetts.

Hispano Soap

This was a perplexing find. Hispanic Soap, "quality from people that keep improving"? I guess Lux soap doesn't cut it anymore? I still have not tried it as I like the packaging and the soap looks like hand cut wax.

El Chinito - Noodles

For those in the Tri-State area of NY, NJ and CT, you have probably experienced the boom of Indo-Chinese cuisine made popular by NYC's pioneering restaurant "China Mirch".

It seems that the Indian grocery stores are catching on albeit a bit later than the restaurant wave. What really caught our attention was the label which speaks, borderline racism.

Remember the controversy of the Spanish Basketball team that was competing at the Beijing Olympics in 2008? The gesture was coined, "chink-eye" by the Angry Asian Man blog. Well, "El Chinito" really?!?! but what really begs a question is, why is there a Spanish-Chinese product is being sold at an Indian grocery store? Couldn't they just sell authentic Chinese goods? Maybe Russell Peters had it right when he said that Indians and Chinese cannot get along?

Time for some "American Chop Suey". By the way there is nothing American about this dish.

West Elm Going Desi

It seems that West Elm has followed suit of the Crate & Barrell counterpart called "CB2".

Get your Rajastani inspired block prints, "From Rajastan with Love". Sounds like a line from "Octopussy" which was partially filmed at the Lake Palace in Udaipur, Rajastan. They must have hired one of the writers from "Outsourced" for this tag line? I can imagine folks thinking that this will make their bedrooms exotic. Better make room on that bedside table for the Kama Sutra, some sandalwood incense, candles and take out from your favorite Indian restaurant.

I managed to save my t-shirt from last year's Holi in Bombay (Mumbai) above. No, I did not wear a Chor Bazaar t-shirt for the occasion.

It conjured memories of that awesome experience where I got to spend the day at a cousin's home. They were well prepared to let loose and destroy! The stains are caused by powdered color, some PERMANENT which came in small plastic packets and was treated like the ultimate drug at a rave. The other color was the not so permanent color, that wisped through the air and landed on every surface. The folks at Tide would have a real challenge, removing these stains. In addition to the color itself, there were buckets full of water which added to the mix...literally! This formed a nice paste which was smeared on faces in the form of a passive attack. Nobody was spared! There was plenty of beer, which helped with the basking sun. The sun assisted with baking that color into your clothes and skin.

This picture is not us but it gives an idea of the aftermath. Notice the tired and satisfied faces. Remember to keep your best threads at home. Everyone knows that you can't wear them again.

Ones body is completely stained and everyone looks like they fell into a textile mill's dying bath. No soap is strong enough to eliminate the stains on the first bath. It will take multiple tries and eventually most of of it disappears. Of course that PERMANENT color will take as long as a Henna Tattoo to go away. That stuff is nasty and acts like a wood stain on skin. Being in India, it is okay to walk around with the stains. They are like badges of honor from a Holi battle.

This year's Holi includes the "Super Moon". Holi revelers will get to bask in the light of biggest full moon in nearly two decades.Conspiracy theories are suggesting that this has something to do with the recent Japan Tsunami. Experts have denied this theory.

Gup-Tees - A Sitar is Born

We have been reluctant to post about NBC's, "Outsourced" because of titles like "A Sitar is Born" from Season 1: Episode 11 (air date 01.20.11) Clever titles like this make us proud to know that the producers care about India's perception on those lacking a knowledge of Indian culture...

I have to digress, or my rant will start look like the scroll on which Jack Kerouac wrote, "On the Road". Yes I watch this show on Hulu. On my own time, just in case someone tries to use these shows as basis of Indian reality. Okay I will stop!

This episode caught our attention because it featured something called "Gup-tees". How could we resist?

Hulu's description:

Todd discovers Madhuri has an amazing singing voice and encourages the staff to enter a talent contest. But it's Gupta who really wants into the spotlight.

A picture of Madhuri wearing the Gup-tee which was forced upon her during the contest. Of course Madhuri is well versed with the Harmonium. Something that she probably, practices after working twelve hours at the call center, just like any good Indian girl!?!?

"Ask me About" stems from their jobs, where they are supposed to sell novelty items to Americans.

Dabangg - Hero #1

Not that we do movie reviews here at the Chor Bazaar workshop but we couldn't resist "Dabangg", staring Salman Khan. Khan plays a corrupt police officer named Chulbul Pandey.

Salman portrays the classic bad ass, Bollywood hero, equipped with aviator sun glasses and tight synthetic clothes. Plenty of action scenes where he dodges way too many bullets and comes out looking like he managed to hit the dry cleaners for a wardrobe change, before jumping in his police jeep.

As some of you may know? We have a t-shirt design that pays homage to these Bollywood, Bad-ass heroes. We call him the "Cool Guy".

The best "item number" stars the dancing machine, Malika Arora. Malika's shaking hips are synonymous to Shakira's gyrations. If Shakira and Malika read this blog which is highly unlikely, nonetheless, it would be a hell of a dance off that we would be the first in line for.

Super Sucker Cum Jetting Machine

Naan Pizza, the Original?

The other day I was searching my brother's freezer for some ice and came upon this item. He recently purchased it during a shopping expedition in Jackson Heights in Queens, NYC.

The Naan Pizza, immediately sparked memories of an invention that my Mother's friend Hansa Auntie, called "Kulcha Pizza". Kulcha is better known as Naan these days. The recipe called for Ragu sauce and grated Velveeta cheese. All baked in a toaster oven with a total preparation time of 10-15 minutes. The flux in time is based on how fast you can grate the cheese? It was one of those inventions that allowed for a quick meal when both parents were working.

Back to, "The Original Naan Pizza". How can "Deep Foods" call this the "original" when Hansa Auntie was making these back in the early 80's? Being that this recipe was most likely shared at various gatherings, I am sure that there are many aunties out there, that would find this preposterous! Okay...maybe not, as the $1.99 price tag makes this an easy sale and much easier to make that Hansa aunty's recipe. Quicker to feed the hungry children.

I then began thinking about my summers in, Ahmedabad, India where pizza was introduced when I was around five or so. The place is called, "Jasuben Pizza" and I was really excited as it was an alternative to traditional Indian food. The issues with this pizza were about to unfold.

Jasuben Pizza consists of the following, ketchup, bakhri (Gujrati bread) sized "thin crust" base, Amul cheese, onions, tomato and chillies galore!

The killer for a five year old, that is used to Pizza Hut, were those chillies and ketchup. What were they thinking and couldn't they get the proper ingredients?

Sounds kind of nasty but today I crave Jasuben's Pizza, for it's an experience of the road side cart, that shouldn't be missed when you are in Ahmedabad. It has become an institution that serves up its own "original pizza" They don't use Naan or Kulcha for that matter but the argument still stands that there is nothing original about, "Deep's" product. They even have a Facebook page.

Maybe we can facilitate and alliance of Gujarati Aunties and Jasuben as their leader to make "Deep" get rid of the "original" from the name? Even New York City is no stranger to the pizza soap opera. There is the controversy of "Ray's Original Pizza" and who was the original?

Jingle Eh Saru Che!

We have always been impressed by Indo-Viacom [sic] Holiday greetings. Many have seen the Punjabi Jingle Bell Song. The 2009 "Jingle Bell" is a mixture of Gujarati and Tamil from ©MTV India. Of course we got this a year later in the states. We could attribute this to that lost postcard that a friend sent from Ladakh and had to wait for the snow to thaw before it could be shipped.

Many of you have probably witnesses the recent American Express commercial, starring Conan O'Brien. The commercial takes place in India. Of course this could have turned into a demeaning disaster like the erroneous, MetroPCS (Tech&Talk) commercials, but it isn't. Conan brilliantly uses his self-deprecating humor and throws in some choppy Hindi while he interacts with locals in a bustling Rajastani like city.

Conan is not a novice to India and has used India for an old skit on his former NBC show. It seems that Youtube has taken the video down, but thankfully we were able to find a link, "NBC Call Center". It is super hillarious skit which features Andy Blitz, who is trying to get the NBC call center to fix his computer and ends up working in the call center.

Enough Blabbering from us. Here is the Extended cut that supersedes the shorter version that has been airing on television. The tongue part has us rolling. Enjoy!

Happy Diwali + New Year

Remember to be safe when lighting all those deeyas (fire lanterns) around your home. Especially if you are in the U.S. where your home is presumably fully carpeted and made out wood. Not a good mix.

We have to figure out how to repeal all those anti-fire work laws on Diwali. However, here in New York City we do enjoy the suspension of "Alternate Side of Parking rules", which means that car owners don't have to move their car for street cleaning. Small steps for recognition.

Guess who is enjoying Diwali in, India? President Obama!

Diwali Greetings from PepsiCo and Target

Awww, thanks PepsiCo and Target, you made my day when I got your card in the mail, the other day. It was really thoughtful of you to think of me.

I should probably thank Indra Nooyi for this Diwali greeting from PepsiCo and Target? It turns out that I got hit with another Desi inspired, advertising mailer. The last one was from McDonald's.

Then I started thinking. Was Pepsico trying to make me forget the Indian standard snacks like namkeen that taste so good with a Diwali drink? Would I opt for some Lays Potato chips in lieu of fried Bajia? Should I drink lots of Pepsi so that I am alert when I am lighting fire crackers...whoops, fire crackers are illegal in my state, so let's not talk about them.

Of course Indra, PepsiCo and Target forgot the most important thing with this Desi mailer, NO COUPON for free stuff! We like presents on Diwali, usually in the form of money. What kind of greeting is this?

Happy Raksha Bandhan!

Raksha Bandhan has come and gone. An auspicious North Indian festival where a sister ties a rakhi (a decorative bracelet) around her brother's wrist for good luck. The brother offers his sister a gift (usually money) in exchange and vows to look after her. Both will exchange prasad (sweets).

Sound's nice doesn't it? Some Rakhis have a tendancy to be extremely gaudy and sizable. Some sisters will go out of their way to tie a nasty one as a joke. The brother has to rock that Rakhi(s) like a fool and still pay her!

I do not have a sister so two cousin sisters that send me rakhis every year and luckily they are tasteful. It still doesn't stop people from asking what the braclet is all about. I have to got through the whole description of Rakhi and their reactions tend to be like a perplexed dog.

I may ask for a nasty one next year but have to come up with a facetious explanation for the rakhi. Any ideas?

I never thought that "Yoga" skills cound be used to fight. Move over Bikram Yoga, self defence Yoga is sure to take the world by storm.

David Gillette does not resort to acting overly smart about the names of the dances or the events that took place, but revels in what he calls "cultural spelunking". The wedding surely had an itinerary with phonetically spelled events, but he did not try to pronounce them which would have bastardized the pronunciations and ruined this piece.
