Mary and Andy’s wedding ceremony was more than just a formal exchange of vows — it was a deep and rich celebration of their love and faith. Held at Cornerstone Chinese Alliance Church in Markham, Ontario, the ceremony was also filled with passionate music that echoed through the sanctuary’s majestic wooden vaulted cathedral ceilings. Everyone gathered lifted their voices and sang together in unity with praise and joyful reverence.

The forecast had called for cold and rainy weather—but just as we wrapped up the ceremony, the skies cleared and the temperature warmed up, giving us the perfect opportunity for portraits outside. We headed over to a quiet walking trail path near Main Street Unionville and made full use of the charming wooden boardwalk and bridge. Just in case the cold and rain stuck around, we had previously reserved Espace Studio in Richmond Hill as a backup for their creative portrait session — and we’re so glad we did! The space featured a gorgeous floral arch, which created a gorgeous romantic backdrop for their portraits.

The celebration continued at Paradise Banquet Hall in Vaughan, where guests were treated to a night filled with some truly original entertainment. Instead of a traditional first dance, Mary and Andy surprised everyone by writing and performing their own original song! They also kicked off the dance floor with a karaoke party! Guests took turns selecting songs, singing their hearts out, and getting everyone else to join in — complete with phone flashlights waving in the air.

As the sun began to set, I snuck Mary and Andy outside for some stunning golden hour portraits. The venue’s scenic bridge, gazebo, and park area created a dreamy atmosphere as the warm light bathed the couple in a golden glow which allowed us to create some peaceful and romantic images together!

Mary and Andy’s wedding was a celebration of love, creativity, and community. From a gorgeous church ceremony in Markham, fun photo sessions in Unionville and Richmond Hill, to a one-of-a-kind karaoke dance party at Paradise Banquet Hall, every part of the day was memorable and meaningful.

Derek planned the proposal with thoughtfulness and heart. He invited Summer back to Bar Volo for what she thought would be a casual get-together of drinks and snacks, reliving memories of their first date. Little did she know, a life-changing moment was about to unfold. After enjoying their time inside, they stepped outside together. As Summer followed, she was met with the sight of Derek on one knee, holding out a ring and asking the biggest question of his life. The look of surprise and joy on Summer’s face was priceless — and of course, she said yes! It was the perfect moment, filled with love, nostalgia, and excitement.

After the big “Yes!”, we headed over to Archive Studios, a stunning natural light photography studio in downtown Toronto, to capture the joy of their engagement. The studio’s architectural and warm atmosphere made it the ideal setting for Derek and Summer to warm up, embrace one another, and let their love shine through in every photo. The soft, natural window light along with the studio’s curated furniture and decor added a touch of elegance and romance to their portraits, making each shot feel intimate and authentic. Archive Studios’ stylish vibe was the perfect location to capture their connection and joy – we created memories they’ll cherish forever.

The day began with Meng and Martin’s “first look”: when the couple had a private moment to see each other before the ceremony. As Martin turned around to see his bride for the first time, his joy was undeniable. This intimate moment was filled with so much love. Capturing Martin’s expression as he laid eyes on Meng in her gorgeous dress was magical, and I could tell it was the beginning of a day full of heartfelt moments.

What made Meng and Martin’s wedding truly unique was the fusion of their cultural backgrounds, blending Chinese and Jewish wedding customs, each rich with meaning and history.

The traditional Chinese tea ceremony is an ancient tradition that symbolizes respect and gratitude to the couple’s parents. Meng and Martin knelt before their parents, offering tea as a gesture of thanks for their love and guidance. In return, they received blessings and gifts: gold jewellery and red envelopes filled with good fortune.

On the Jewish side, the ceremony began with the bedeken, the veiling of the bride. In this tradition, Martin placed a veil over Meng’s face, which represented the groom’s commitment to love his bride for who she is, beyond just her physical beauty.

The couple also signed the ketuba, a Jewish marriage contract that outlines the couple’s commitments to one another. This document serves as a timeless testament to both their love and dedication to each other.

Their wedding ceremony took place under a chuppah, a canopy symbolizing the home the couple will build together. The open sides of the chuppah signify the welcoming of guests into their home and lives. Standing beneath it, surrounded by their loved ones, Meng and Martin exchanged their vows and their rings.

At the end of the ceremony, Martin intentionally broke a glass by stomping on it with his foot. The guests shouted, “Mazel Tov!” as a cheer of congratulations and joy for the newlyweds. This moment marked the transition from ceremony to celebration!

At the start of the dinner reception, everyone took to the dance floor for the horah, a lively Jewish circle dance. Meng and Martin were lifted high in chairs as their family and friends danced around them in joyous celebration. The energy was electric and contagious!

Later, during the dinner reception, there was a lively lion dance, a classic symbol of good luck and prosperity in Chinese culture. Dancers dressed as lions, with vibrant colours and graceful movements, which brought energy and excitement to the celebration. The lion is believed to drive away evil spirits and bring happiness to the couple’s marriage, making this tradition both engaging and meaningful.

Mary and Andy have a unique and heartwarming love story. They first met 7 years ago, thanks to a little matchmaking by their families! Both of their parents knew each other and they decided it was time that their children did too. They arranged a family dinner, which set the stage for what would eventually blossom into a life-changing connection. Years passed, and fate intervened in the most modern way — Andy wrote Mary a digital letter and suggested that they should be together. In response, Mary hesitantly answered with “Maybe,” taking some time to think things through before realizing Andy was her perfect match. That “Maybe” soon became a delightful “Yes,” and here we are today, celebrating their upcoming wedding!

The day began in the early morning with the “First Look”, where Matthew saw his bride-to-be with a quiet moment together before the day’s festivities began. Matthew’s love for Chloe was evident: his face lit up with excitement and pure happiness. Chloe was radiant and was so excited to see Matthew as well.

They had a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the River Rock Waterfall site. Surrounded by a circle of trees and the gentle sounds of flowing water, Chloe and Matthew exchanged their vows in front of their closest friends and family. The natural beauty of the venue provided a serene backdrop for this heartfelt moment, making it a ceremony to remember.

Chloe and Matthew’s passion for jazz music was at the heart of their wedding celebration. To bring their musical vision to life, they enlisted the incredible talents of St Royal Entertainment. As the live jazz band filled the air with soulful melodies, guests couldn’t help but tap their feet and sway to the rhythm. There was a truly infectious energy on the dance floor!

No wedding is complete without an extraordinary meal, and Chloe and Matthew’s lunch reception was a true culinary delight. En Ville Event Design & Catering went above and beyond, crafting a special menu that wowed every guest. The highlight of the meal? A gigantic German-style pork knuckle that left everyone in awe! The dish was not only a delicious centrepiece, but also a delightful surprise that had guests wide-eyed and eagerly taking pictures. It was so large and flavourful that many guests happily took home leftovers.

Chloe and Matthew’s wedding at the Miller Lash House was the perfect reflection of their love — elegant, joyful, and deeply personal. Their journey from British Columbia to Toronto was a testament to their commitment to making their big day as unique and memorable as possible. Surrounded by the people they love, the music that moves them, and the delicious food that delighted everyone, Chloe and Matthew celebrated their union in a way that will be cherished for years to come. It’s a momentous occasion that calls for a family gathering, delicious food, and of course, wonderful pictures to capture the joy and love shared among family members and friends. Interacting with children during a photo session can sometimes be challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. It’s important to connect with each child and make the experience enjoyable for them. One of their twin daughters held my hand as we walked through the historic village, exploring the world together! Our little adventure together ended with her giving me warm hug at the end of the session. It was the sweetest affirmation that she truly enjoyed our time together!

Coordinating a photo session for a large extended family can be challenging, especially when some family members travel in from out-of-town. Understanding their limited timeline and important scheduling considerations (especially with young children), I coordinated with the family to find the best session time that suited everyone’s needs. Plus, Espace Studio was the perfect natural light photo studio recommendation for them!

Young children bring a special kind of magic to family photos. To keep them engaged, I make every photo session a fun and playful experience! I get down to talk to them at their eye level and interact with them in a friendly, playful, and upbeat way. As their photographer, my goal is to create an atmosphere where they feel comfortable and free to express their true selves (including their silliest and funniest faces).
