Nearly 8 years ago, Dick Wilson passed the torch of leadership to Sandi Vidal. She came in with years of Human Resources experience and a new vision to grow and expand the organization. During her tenure, Christian HELP added programs such as the Central Florida Jobs Initiative and Kidworx as well as starting the Casselberry Community Task Force and Care Cabin.

Christian HELP won several awards including the Bank of America Neighborhood Builder and the University of Miami Business Plan contest. Sandi led with passion and a desire for excellence. Recently God led her to accept a position with the Central Florida Commission on Homelessness. She will be missed.

Christian HELP is pleased to announce Vickie Martin as our new Executive Director. Vickie has 20+ years of leadership experience and has worked with several non-profit agencies.

Vickie has been involved with Christian HELP as a volunteer for several years including service as Board Member, Secretary and Chair. She is the leader of the Building Better Futures Initiative, is a current participant in Leadership Seminole, and has a degree in Marketing/Management and Human Resource Leadership.

Vickie's life verse is Romans 8:28 "All things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose."

She believes her purpose is to serve others with excellence; meeting them at their point of need and finds great joy in doing so.

The Board of Directors and the Staff of Christian HELP are confident that under Vickie's leadership our programs will continue to serve the community as well as improve and expand.

Thank you for your commitment to Christian HELP and the impact of this ministry in the community.

Thanks to supporters like YOU Harvest of Hope 2014 was a tremendous success!

We thank God for the opportunity to share our mission and vision.

Because of the generous support of people like you 1,201 families will have the training and resources for their job search as well as food so that they don't have to choose between the roof over their head and the food on their tables.

The donations of our guests will provide $236,597 in services and result in $2,882,400 in tax payer savings.

September is Hunger Action Month!

When Melanie and her family moved to Florida, things did not go as planned.

Melanie, her husband, and 3 kids ended up living out of hotels with the occasional, unexpected "camping trip" when things got even tighter. Melanie and her 8 year old daughter, Jane, came to Christian HELP after one of their "camping trips", covered in bug bites, with Jane wearing only an over-sized men's t-shirt. With no way to wash their clothes, that t-shirt was the only thing clean for Jane to wear.

Jim, Melanie's husband, took a part time labor job while Melanie cared for their children. The Smith family was barely staying afloat when she reached out for help. We were able to provide much needed food for their family and 3 new donated backpacks for the school year. Timothy is starting a full time job this week and their family is now in a home.

You made it possible to help the Smith's during their trying time. Thank you for taking action this Hunger Action Month! With a donation of just $60, you can provide food for families like the Smith's for an entire month.

Central Florida Jobs Initiative

Ernestine had been without a job for 5 years and "could not figure out what was wrong with her." Interview after interview, she never received a call back.

Not able to cover her expenses and being a few dollars over the food stamp allowance, Ernestine was at the end of her rope and feeling hopeless.

Ernestine learned about Christian HELP's CFJI program at a seminar and decided to participate. There she learned how to interview well, write a compelling resume, and received food from the Christian HELP food bank. With the help of CFJI, Ernestine now has a job, is able to provide for herself, and once again believes in herself.

"All those years of struggling finally ended because of their dedication and sincere efforts in helping people like me. This job has given me a new lease on life. I pray they never end this program. I couldn't have done it without CFJI."

Christian HELP is Filling the Gap This

Summer

For many of us, summer means vacations, cookouts, and time at the pool, but for tens of thousands of Central Florida children, it could mean going hungry. Now that school is out for summer, parents on a limited budget are now facing the challenge of providing the extra meal their children would normally receive at school.

Christian HELP fills that gap for so many families throughout the summer as we see a boom in the demand for food. Through generous donations from individuals like yourself and local grocery stores, we are able to provide nutritious food to the families and little ones that would otherwise go without.

Greetings!

The Meaning of a Tennis Ball

Many years ago, Mary and her family came to Christian HELP after her husband lost his job and her medical bills were too much for her family to handle. At that time, Mary and her husband's two boys were very young. While they were waiting to receive food from our pantry, we gave them each a tennis ball to play with.

Today, Mary and her family are doing very well. They have since started their own business and are back on their feet! Mary stopped by Christian HELP just a few days ago to share her story with me and to give back to the Ministry. She said, "You know what my boys remember about Christian HELP? The tennis balls you gave them to play with. They are 22 and 26 now and they still have those tennis balls to this day!"

Such a small, simple gesture, like giving Mary's two boys tennis balls to keep them entertained, can have a profound impact on a person's life. To Mary's two boys, those tennis balls are no longer just a toy. They represent a time of trail for their family, a time of uncertainty, and a time of hope through a small hand up that is made possible by supporters like YOU!

The Silver Bullet of the Job Search

5,647 was the number of applications I had submitted online, or at least that is how many it felt like. Fresh out of college and ready to start my career, I was in a new city and felt like I was banging my head against the wall searching for a job. Surely my spray and pray application method would pay off eventually, right? I did have a college degree after all. After several months of job searching without much traction, I stumbled upon the silver bullet of the job search: the informational interview. Whether you are just starting your career, like I was, are considering a new field, or are just seeking out a job, the informational interview is a great step to succeeding in your search.

My strategy for conducting the informational interview was four-fold. First, have a compelling reason for meeting with the person you contact. I was a recent college graduate who had just moved to the area and was interested in learning more about the local nonprofit sector. Your situation may be different than mine, but that does not mean you do not have a unique reason as to why someone should sit down with you. Maybe you are interested in learning more about a specific field or want to find out what it takes to be in your new contact’s position. Whatever it is, do not make it about the fact that you are job searching. Let that fact come out naturally. Mentioning it before you have even sat down will tie the person’s hands and make it tough to get appointments with people.

Second, keep it short. Only ask for 15 to 20 minutes of their time and was sure to keep that promise during the meeting. If the meeting goes longer, make sure it is on their terms and not because you forgot to keep an eye on the time. People are busy, so asking for only 15 to 20 minutes of their time makes it more manageable for them and more likely that they will meet with you.

Third, ask questions about them. Do not make it about yourself. You are there to find out more about them, their background, and the field they are in. Listening is an excellent skill to develop and communicates that you are genuinely interested in the person across from you. Plus, most people love to talk about themselves. Your ability to ask the right questions and actually listen to the answers will speak volumes about yourself without saying a word.

Finally, do not get out of that chair until the person you are meeting with has given you 2 to 3 more people with which to meet. In order to keep the ball rolling, you need to continually meet new people. In addition, with their permission, you can use their name as your compelling reason for meeting with your next contact, saying, “I recently met with John to learn more about the field, and he recommended I meet with you. Can I have 15 to 20 minutes of your time this week?”

Conducting informational interviews will expand your network and help you to learn about the community and industry you are pursuing. Not to mention getting out and meeting new people will boost your morale tremendously after sitting on the couch endlessly churning out applications to no avail. But how does it help you find a job? The people you meet with will have a pulse on the local job market and will likely know of openings in the field. If not, they will know somebody who does. Even though your meetings are not about the fact that you are job searching, it will likely come up organically. Even if it does not, you can reach out to your contacts later if you see they are connected to a position you are interested in for a reference or advice on your application.

If you are stuck in your job search, connect with people through the informational interview. Consider it a useful tool to add to your toolbox of job search skills. In my experience, limited as it may be, landing the right job really is all about who you know. The informational interview is a great way to quickly expand your network and gain some traction in what can be a difficult and discouraging job search.

Mission Accomplished at Casselberry Care Cabin

Christian HELP is a part of the Casselberry Community Task Force, a group that banded together this time in 2011 in response to a 60 Minutes broadcast highlighting the plight of hungry and homeless children in our community's school. From there, the Task Force established the Casselberry Care Cabin, which many of you support, at Casselberry Elementary School.

Over the past several years, Casselberry Elementary has gone from a C Grade to an A Grade school and its students and their families have received thousands of food packages from the Care Cabin. In addition, the Care Cabin has provided clothing, financial assistance, and partnered some students with mentors.

Moving forward, we are grateful for the expanding vision and resources that the Casselberry Police Benevolent Association can bring to further this project that Christian HELP has helped to start. Christian HELP, along with the rest of the Task Force, will be passing the torch to the Casselberry Police to serve the community through the Care Cabin. We are so grateful for the opportunity to serve the community in this way and thank you for your support of the Care Cabin.

To prepare yourself for this job fair, please prepare a "one minute commercial" about yourself stating your strong points, skills, and education.

Dress your best! We can not stress this enough. Professional / business attire is expected by hiring employers. The job market is still very competitive, and it is important that you get your game on! First impressions and your preparation are keys to your success. Keep a positive attitude and concentrate on the benefits of the experience.

Indulge your curiosity - talk to all the companies you normally would not be interested in. Meet with as many people as you can. Take your time and be patient. Be sure to visit all of the exhibiting companies!

Remember to follow up with applications, phone calls, interviews, and resumes after the job fair. Recruiters are still hiring job seekers from the job fair days after the job fair event is over - this I when employers are busy reviewing resumes, paper and online applications, making phone calls, and interviewing for a couple weeks after the job fair has ended. So follow up, follow up, and follow up!

Hope and a Future

Chris came to Christian HELP after losing his job. Depressed and discouraged, he came looking for a helping hand in one of his most difficult times.

Christmas Isn't Over Yet!

One of our clients, a single mother of one, came to us after our Christmas program had already ended to get help this past holiday season. Trying to make ends meet, she was not able to provide for her son's only Christmas wish: a skateboard.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors this Christmas, we had an abundance of gifts to distribute, and even had a few left over. Christian HELP was able to help this mother grant her child's wish with a brand new skateboard.

It looks like Christmas stuck around for a few extra weeks this year and the impact that our donors are making in the community is still happening!

Volunteer Needs

There are opportunities for involvement with Christian HELP/CFEC in the following areas:

(Not a complete list, check our website and Facebook page for additional opportunities for involvement)

· Committee Member- Serve on the stewardship committee, capital campaign committee, social entrepreneurial committee, marketing committee, or Casselberry Task Force

· Board Membership (application process required)- Serve on the board as a champion for the Christian HELP organization helping to set board policy and governance, and vision for future sustainability.

· Job Skill Class instructors- Wednesday afternoons 3:00-4:30PM. Facilitate classes on Resume skills, Interview skills, and Basic Job Search using a PowerPoint presentation and adding in your experiences.

· Boot Camp Mentors and Facilitators- This program will run on 4 Saturdays starting in February. Facilitators will help with teaching and encouraging students. Mentors will coach students for a 6 week period following the class. Times will be set up at mutual convenience.

· Resume Preparation and Coaching- At the Christian HELP office on Tuesdays from 10-2. Rotating Schedule. Must have prior resume writing and or/review experience.

· Jobs Initiative Facilitators- Teach job skills modules based on Re-Charge and Re-Energize your job search curriculum. There are 6 full day modules on the topics of: Creating your Job Search Plan, Resumes and Cover Letters, Networking, Job Search Tactics, Interview and Impressions, and Performance Excellence. Teach a full or ½ day. (Training provided)

· Jobs Initiative Mock Interviewers- Participate in the module 5 class interviewing students and providing feedback on the interview.

· Jobs Initiative Mentors- Mentor students who have been newly hired for a position and act as the liaison between the student and the employer when challenges arise.

· Employment Counselor- This position requires a minimum of 1 day a week commitment. Work directly with clients to assess job needs, resume needs, provide job leads, provide coaching to the job seeker. Must be willing to pray with clients.

· Job Fair/ Employment Seminar Volunteers- volunteer at the job fair and/or employment seminars to serve the job seekers and employers in a variety of different roles.

· Food Pantry- volunteer as a corporate or church group for corporate pantry day or on a regular basis to sort food, help clients, unload trucks, and other general duties.

· Christmas volunteers- volunteer to help with the Christmas program sorting toys, acting as elves, housekeeping, in the pantry and more! Needed now-end of December.

· Ambassador- represent Christian HELP in the community at outreach events

· Host a Food Drive –The pantry is in need of non-perishable goods all year long.

· Special projects and events

The greatest gift of all

People always call me out on my love of the grinch. Really, I love him because when he saw the true meaning of Christmas his heart swelled 3 sizes. I love how he became part of the story rather than trying to rob the people of their joy like he was originally trying to do.

For me, Christmas has always been about family. The gifts under the tree are secondary to the love we have for each other. We have had years that were abundant and years that were slim, but none of that matters if you don't have people around you who love you and care for your future.

Jesus is the reason for the season, but even more, He is a symbol of unconditional love. God sent Him as the sacrifice for all of our sins. He tells us in Romans 3:10-12, and 23 “No one is righteous—not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” ... For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. But He goes on in John 3:16 to tell us "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

I am so thankful to God for His gift to us. Aren't you?

It is so easy to get caught up in the commercialization of Christmas. These days we even have to deal with people who don't like the word Christmas and fight to have it removed from our vocabulary. I find all of this to be so sad.

Each year, the community comes together through various programs to support families in need and make sure their kids have Christmas. Some even sacrifice their own gifts to help others. This warms my heart. Occasionally, we have a family who is not happy with their gifts, seems ungrateful, or wants more than we generally provide. This can be discouraging and take away from the true meaning and reason fro what we do. There are so many families who are grateful and who are just thrilled about how the community supports them. In our program, we get to pray for them as well as provide them with gifts and food. This year, 8 people professed a belief in Christ for the first time. This is what Christmas is about.

As we look forward to 2014, my prayer for you is that you have been open to receiving God's greatest gift, and if you have not; that you will be.

Be blessed in 2014 and beyond.

On Being Thankful...

Thanksgiving is a time of year where we stop and think about what we are thankful for. Some people even do daily thank yous on social media listing the things and people they are thankful for. I have purposed in my heart to be thankful every day and not just in November. It is a great exercise that helps me to appreciate all that I have been blessed with.

"And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." Colossians 3:15-17

As I go through my daily routine, I lift people up and just say thank you to God for the people he has put into my life. As I meet people who are hurting and in need of jobs, I pray for them, but also thank God for my job. You get the picture. Being prayerful and thankful helps to keep me focused on how blessed I am no matter what is going on.

This Thanksgiving, I give thanks for you. The supporters, and clients of Christian HELP. I give thanks for an amazing staff and team of volunteers who give more of themselves than is expected or required. I give thanks for Jesus, who gives me life.

This boy has known hunger

As told by Phyllis, one of the Christian HELP team members:

Today I was coming back from lunch, and as I was getting out of my car, I heard this little boy crying loudly.

His mom was holding him and his dad was close by. I went in the office and grabbed him a Mickey Mouse plush toy, and thought that may calm him down. I walked up to the family and asked if I could give him it, the little boy was maybe about 2 or 3 years old would not take it so I handed it to mom.

She said he’s hungry, I said oh he hasn’t had lunch yet? Mom said no, he hasn’t eaten today; I gave him a glass of juice. She was holding a food ticket, and had a few families in front of her waiting, so I walked into the food pantry and got a pretzel and cheese snack and an individual bag of cookies. I walked back to the family and asked the parents, is this ok for him to have, to hold him over till your food order is processed? She said yes, Thank you so much for treating us kindly and like human beings. I went to give him the bag of cookies; he grabbed them so fast from me, at that moment I knew this little boy has known hunger. No child ever should. It’s was heartbreaking.

I am just thankful that I heard his cries and responded, if only in a small way. It made me think, differently about what we do here at Christian HELP and why. It must be so demeaning and humbling to come to a food pantry, fear of being judged or belittled. Our words, and expressions, have an impact on our clients; we try hard to be aware of that often. We can get so busy, we miss the opportunities right before our eyes, if we just take that moment to stop, listen and see. Everyone has a story and theirs was they have never been in this situation before and are just numb.

Lord I thank you for meeting this families needs today, through us. Allow God to use us more daily, and listening for those cries and unspoken words, the face reveals so much more than words sometimes.
