Out

As you can see from the stark surroundings, I am "moving." Where? I'm still working on that.

Finding a new home for my blog is a lot like "house hunting." Basically there are two options...#1-Find a place and fix it up the way you want or #2-Build one from scratch. Um, is there a door #3, Monty?

Since I'm in the process of (re)defining my blog and myself as a blogger, my needs have changed. For now, I'm in temporary housing. There I can post, engage, and practice brevity (I'm working on my tendency to be longwinded) until I find a home that fits.

Back On The Grid...Well, Sort Of

Just a friendly blog post to make you aware that I have returned from my 30 Day Digital Sabbatical. While I am back engaging in the social media space, I am not back to blogging just yet.

I spent a lot of time reflecting on my blog and being a blogger while I was "away" and I'm not quite ready to return to that aspect of my digital life at this time. Trust me, this is a very very good thing!

So for now, you can find me "chatterboxing" on Twitter and Google Plus. And yes, I will be sharing my sabbatical journey with you all very soon :)

That's right...It's baaaaack! Yo Gabba Gabb LIVE is back on tour and will hit Atlanta this weekend on Sunday, October 30 at the Fabulous Fox Theater.

I've once again been invited by Macaroni Kid to attend this event and if it is anything close to what it was last year, you and your kids are in for a fabulous treat! Last year we had a ball and really, I think the adults had more fun than the kids...especially when Biz Markie hit the stage. After all, nobody beats the Biz, right?

Well, Biz, DJ Lance Rock, and the rest of the Gabba Land crew are coming to a city near you! Be sure to check them out!

I purchased the book for myself and happened to win a copy in a door prize drawing at the Atlanta book-signing event. Since it's my birthday week AND it also happens to be the THIRD YEAR ANNIVERSARY of The ChatterBox Show...I thought I'd give a gift to one of you...

Yes, I am giving away my extra copy of Mom, Incorporated. To enter, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post. Yep, that's it. I will also post this giveaway on Google+ and my Facebook Page. If you "like" it or "+1" either one of those, I will count it as an extra entry. So you basically can have up to three entries to win.

I will pick and announce the winner on Thursday, October 27th at 11:00AM EST. Good luck!

You know, writing down the things you want for your birthday. Then of course anything you didn't get would cross over to your Christmas/Hanukkah list...or vice versa depending on when your birthday falls in relation.

I can't remember the last time I made a birthday wish list. I am certain it was well before the age of thirty. True, I've celebrated my birthday in my thirties...in that mild "in-your-thirties-and-remember-you-are-grown-with-children" method of celebrating. But I can't recall the last time I actually asked for something specific for my birthday...outside of choosing a restaurant.

I'm not good at asking for things. I'm thankful for my friends and family that know me well, for they have given me great gifts that have been useful as well as meaningful without request. It feels weird to ask. Selfish. Like I shouldn't expect to get anything and just be eternally grateful when I do. But, on the other hand, it's my birthday, right? Shouldn't I get something I really want? Even just a little bit?

Since my birthday is four days away, and I found myself with a little bit of "me time," I thought about what I'd like for my birthday...you know...just for kicks. Here's what I came up with...in no particular order of importance...

1 - An iPad
2 - An entire weekend to myself...away (or locally but in a hotel)
3 - An evening out with my friends and not have to drive
4 - A complete spa day
5 - To go to the movies
6 - My favorite croissants
7 - A foot massage
8 - My favorite tea
9 - Coffee, of course
8 - Inspirational things to write on
9 - Chipotle for dinner when the mood hits me
10 - iTunes

A nice little mix ranging from "completely-doable" to "yeah-right-in-your-dreams." I'll let you know how much of this gets rolled over to Christmas ;)

So far, that is the most common question asked since announcing my sabbatical plans. Second most popular question is "Why?" Almost everyone has been supportive and I'm learning not to take the questions they have too personally or in the "wrong way." The question "why" (along with all the subquestions under that category) is, for the most part, out of genuine curiosity. At times, it's not…it's more of a "why on earth would you do this to yourself." In those instances, I try not to take offense… or worse… let it sway my decision. It's hard. Especially when I have to consider the source.

I need to answer the hard questions for myself so they do not seem threatening when asked by other people. The reason I seem to take offense is because I can't confidently give my answers. If I am serious about this, I need to own it! So here is me "owning it!"

Why Are You Calling It A Sabbatical Instead Of A Hiatus?
Well, for one, they are two different things (and yes, I looked up the definitions to be sure). A Hiatus is just a break. A break from what you're doing for a minute and then you go right back to the same thing. Maybe approach it differently but still the same thing. A Sabbatical is a period of rest as well but it is also meant for using that time to further studies, learn new things, a journey to renewal. So it's a little deeper. And, number two, that's just what it's called…a Digital Sabbatical…I got the name from Gwen Bell, I didn't make it up.

How Far "Off-the-Grid" Are You Going?
While going completely "dark" is intriguing, it would be too much of a shock to my system. This being my first time attempting this stunt without a net, I should be gentle…not to mention real... with myself. Cold turkey this go round would be excessive. That being said, here's how far I'm going…

Eliminating Personal Digital Presence: I will not post on my blogs(s), do radio shows, or post on any of my personal social site profiles. No following timelines. No "sharing." No retweets. No likes. No +1s. No check-ins.

Reducing Sending/Receiving Digital Information: I will drastically reduce the amount of digital information I receive so there will be NO web-surfing. I have unsubscribed from close to 90% of my email lists and daily digests. I will also designate a time, once per day to read/respond to necessary email messages. I have set up filters and/or notified proper individuals for this process.

Um…yeah…so that's pretty far "off-the-grid," right? I'm shaking a little bit.

Now, I must add a disclaimer here…I am still working. I am still consulting with brands and businesses on social media and freelance writing for online publications. However, what I am working on now (and what I may take on while on sabbatical) doesn't require that I use my own online presence. So if I end up in a tweet or a status update because of something I wrote, it won't by my own doing.

What Am I Going To Do?

Relax, Relate, Release…and WRITE! Lots and lots of writing! Trust that I am chronicling every moment of this experience! Finish a novel (reading one and writing one) Explore new creative pursuits beyond writing. Reconnect with myself and my physical space. Realign my purpose for my digital presence. Go outside. Exercise and meditate…I've gained some weight and "The Fat Pants" are lurking.

Aren't You Worried About What This Might Do To Your Stats and Status?
Yes. Terrified. I cringe at what my Klout score will be after Thanksgiving.

What Will You Miss The Most?
Klout Perks, Pinterest, Instagram, discovering new #CoolestThings (and telling you about it), engagement on Google+, missing out on any influencer programs / opportunities that may come along while I am MIA, and YOU.

Not to mention that this is something I will get on my soapbox about and never shut up. I have a sabbatical coming up and I need to practice un-chatterboxing. But this is not an issue that will go quietly away... we've only just begun to use our voices for social good! So...Listen up!

"The film explores how the media’s misrepresentation of women has led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence.

It's a new season. Fall is finally here. In true "ChatterBox" form, it would seem that the winds of change are blowing again…but in a much different direction this time. Yes, I know. You're in the process of deciding whether to roll your eyes or be excited with anticipation. Well, you'll have a little bit of time to ponder that dilemma. Why? Because in 10 days, I'm going on a "Digital Sabbatical."

You're going on a what?

A lot has happened in my personal and professional life since the last evolution of "The ChatterBox." Unfortunately, more negative than positive. Since I was in the "thick of it" all it was hard to put into perspective why things were not the opposite. I began to doubt, second guess, lose sight of my purpose, lose sight of myself… and i didn't like how that felt or how it was being translated publicly. I felt like a failure…or worse…a fraud. Things needed to, once again, change. But not just an incremental change…a minor revision...a tenth of a point update. This is not something that a new blog face-lift can cure. This requires a full system overhaul…starting from within.

I am a big fan of Gwen Bell. Her work inspires me beyond measure. A few months ago, I read about her Digital Sabbatical that she takes every year. For one month she goes completely off the grid…zero technology…zero connection to the digital/online space. (well, not completely zero…but zero enough) This is her way of realigning herself…hitting the pause and then the reset button in her life and from it she (as well as her work) emerges anew…refreshed. After reading about her experience and how she did it (as well as some of the posts written by others who followed her lead) I had one thought… "I have SO got to do this…um…one day."

September was a rough month for me in all aspects of my life…particularly in the "self-worth" department. I didn't want to start off October, my birthday month, on a low note, so I searched for things to lift my spirit. The first place I went was to "Until Today," a dated book of daily inspirational messages. As fate would have it, October was devoted to "Worth." If that wasn't a sign…a freakin' bat-signal from above, then I don't know what! It was then, on October 1st, I knew I was ready. It is time to step away for a little while.

So here we are… I have set the date for my 30-Day Digital Sabbatical to begin 10 days from today…on my birthday (October 27). It seemed fitting since that will be the start of my personal new year. It's also very convenient that it will end on the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend as well as encompass more than 90% of NaNoWriMo. The stars could not be more perfectly aligned for this experience.

In the days leading up to the sabbatical, I will share with you how I plan to go about doing this. I am thrilled and terrified all at the same time. Your thoughts, suggestions, and other feedback is, as always, greatly appreciated :)

This week, I was invited to attend the opening night for the new Disney On Ice production, "Dare To Dream." I was pretty stoked about the opportunity because, one, it's Disney, and two, the seven-year-old "princess" that lives with me strongly expressed her desire to see it every single time the commercial came on the television. I love moments like these when I can have a little fun with my kids. I can be all cliche and start singing "When You Wish Upon A Star" or tell them to "click their heels three times." Yes, as previously stated many many times...I am fully aware of my corny-ness. Moving on...

Okay, so I have to admit, I wasn't paying close attention to the commercials. I mean, I knew Disney On Ice...I vaguely remember seeing flashes or hearing something about princesses but I really didn't know what it was really going to be about. Truthfully, when it comes to Disney stuff, I don't need much introduction. I know I will be amazed. This time, I got a little more than I bargained for.

This was probably my third or fourth time seeing Disney on Ice, and I have to say that it was, by far, the best one yet! Aside from the beautiful costumes and set, spectacular effects and stellar skating, it was very inspiring. If you've been to any Disney on Ice productions, you know that they are basically mini, time-lapsed versions of Disney movies adapted for the ice rink. Dare To Dream focused on telling the story of the Disney Princesses who wanted something more for themselves and stopped at nothing to achieve it.

Well, you know, that had had me at "hello" and the fact that they started off with my favorite, Princess Tiana ensured that I would be welled with emotion. Of course, they had to feature the newest princess in the line up, Rapunzel. Sandwiched between these two stories was, Cinderella. Cinderella? Okay, so I get it...blending a little old-school with the new-school...but starting with Tiana and ending with Rapunzel...the whole thing clearly steering you in the "empowered woman" direction and you give me Cinderella? Well, leave it to Disney to work its magic. Since "ice" versions of these stories are condensed, they can pull out the pieces of the story that are relevant to the theme. In Cinderella's case, you actually got to see that it was less of the Prince coming to save her, but more of her getting the courage to no longer take crap from her step-mother and sisters. And I was ok with that.

What really got me was the grand finale where all of the princesses...yes...all of them...including Mulan (my girl for real!) joined them in a spectacular ice dance to the theme song from Tangled. And I was a puddle. Oh and my kids really enjoyed it too. Did I forget to mention that?

You've got this idea... a post... a campaign... a project... a new direction or division for your business... You're so excited that you just cannot wait to bring it to the masses... Except...
It's Wednesday and you really should post something of this nature on a Monday.
It's really eco-friendly so you should wait six months and debut on Earth Day.
It's a "30 Day Challenge" so it makes more sense to start it on the first of the month...and only if the first is on a Monday, of course.

Sound familiar? I am oh so guilty of this! This is the most clever and creative form of procrastination I've ever experienced! Why? Because, for me, between cultivating the idea and the perfect moment to reveal it is... TIME.
Time for the passion to fade.
Time for something else to take its place.
Time for technological advances to emerge.
Time for someone else to have...and act on...the idea.
Time wasted.
Classic conditions to yield a failure to launch. Sounding even more familiar, right?

So what are you sitting on right now...right this very minute...that really doesn't require perfect timing but your delaying the release anyway? If you're ready now, why are you waiting? Will it be worth the wait?

Just for kicks, I challenge you to step outside your comfort zone...
Post on a Thursday.
Start a 30 Day Challenge on the 23rd of the month.
Bring your cause awareness into every month!

The perfect time... is NOW!

Remembering to Live Your Life..."Everything Else Is Secondary" #SteveJobsDay #RIPSteveJobs

Remembering an icon...a legend... a man... Steve Jobs.
Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
And Whip It Good!

I don't know about you, but I am not a big fan of Mondays. At all. Never have been. It's always like being at the foot of a gigantic hill...a mountain, even, and you know you have to climb it or you'll never get to Friday. There's just no way around it. Not only that, how many of you start your Monday with a to-do list as long as your leg? (raises hand) It's this habit we get ourselves into...it's the start of the week, back to the grind of work, school, etc. I don't know many people that start their Monday off completely jazzed. If they do, trust me, they have pharmaceutical assistance! Just kidding...but not really.

This particular Monday, I woke up with an unusual burst of creative energy. Make no mistake, I still had my regular Monday "blahs and blues" and madness of getting my kids ready for school. But inspiration and motivation for my work that had been missing for weeks finally showed up and I needed to grab hold before it disappeared again for an indefinite amount of time.

As soon as the kids were out the door, I headed for one of my favorite "write spaces" to harness the energy and stay focused. On the way, I was listening to the 80s station on SiriusXM and was serenaded by Devo. Okay, who doesn't know the lyrics to "Whip It," right? Redundant, repetitive, and usually makes me think of those stupid red hats they wore in the video...usually. Today, however, in my inexplicably "jazzed-for-a-Monday" mood, I actually listened to the lyrics...

When a problem comes along
You must whip it.
Before the cream sets out to long
You must whip it.
When something's going wrong
You must whip it.

Now who would have thunk that "Whip It" would be a motivational tune? Amazing what happens when a child of the 80s grows up, right? As I listened, I thought about how hard it has been for me to keep my creative momentum going and I especially thought about how much I usually loathe the start of a new hectic week. I suddenly got the urge to channel my inner "Indiana Jones" and "ca-rack that whip" on my mojo and my Monday!

So you might not be a morning person... or a Monday person... or a Monday morning person, but Friday will never get here until you whip it!

Now whip it
Into shape
Shape it up
Get straight
Go forward
Move ahead
Try to detect it
It's not too late
To whip it
WHIP IT GOOD!

This website is music to my ears! Literally! I've always found music to be very theraputic. You know how we say "there's an app for that?" Well, for any given situation, to me, there's a song for that. I've proven it many times with my "Thought Provoking Thursday" posts and I'm always good for interjecting an appropriate song lyric into a conversation. Catch me on a good day, I might even sing it.

Emotional Bag Check is a website where you check your problems at the "door" and in return you'll be given an appropriate song to help you cope. What's even cooler that that, you can be the one to lighten the load for someone else! You can received the "checked baggage" and recommend the tune. SAWEET!

See the article below I amped from GOOD (love this site!). No more lugging it around!
Feeling weighed down by emotional baggage? A new web service offers a quick pick-me-up. Simply upload your drama to Emotional Bag Check—whether your burden relates to relationships, school, or work—and you'll get advice from a stranger in the form of a song she hand-picked to help you cope. Or if you're feeling emotionally generous, you can get a taste of someone else's turmoil and send a song his way to help him deal.
"I’ve always liked the metaphor of emotional baggage," says website creator Robyn Overstreet, a freelance web developer and programming teacher based in New York City who launched the site in February. "Being a literal person, I couldn’t help but think of it literally, as something that you pack up physically and have to carry around with you." Or, in the case of her site, cast it off onto others.
So far, Overstreet says the response has been pretty emo, with teen angst issues—"mom, school, college, boyfriend," in her words—dominating the conversation. This might explain why artists like Taylor Swift, Coldplay and the Glee cast are the top musicians shared on the site. Emotional Bag Check plugs into GrooveShark's API, so any song from their vast library is fair game. "I'm curious to see how it's going to diversify" as word spreads, Overstreet says.

Some of you may be thinking about something you want to start right now, but something is holding you back. Probably something silly like "fear." And you are looking ahead to a future where you can see yourself living that dream but have yet to make one move toward it.

Some of you, like me, are thinking about something you were too scared to start a year ago...and shaking our heads. How far into our vision would we be right now? How easy would it have become with all of the technological advances? How it sucks big time that since we didn't do it then...someone else is doing it now... living our dream.

Well, we've got a message for those of you still pondering and procrastinating and giving into that "false evidence appearing real"... what the hell are you waiting for?
For my fourth installment of the SheStreams | AT&T "Stay Connected" Series, I focus on "staying connected" throughout the conference. It's great to hang with your friends or to latch on to the new people you meet when you first get there, but challenge yourself to continue to expand your network but also stay in touch with your new and existing contacts. Sounds tough? Nah...easier than you think...

I am once again proud of two of my colleagues...my sisters in social media...who have written a book about being a mom and having a business. I am also, once again, extremely humbled that they thought enough of me and my experience to include me in the book (along with 87 other phenomenal mom-preneurs)!

Two of my favorite blog-preneurs, Aliza Sherman and Danielle Smith joined forces to write Mom, Incorporated: A Guide to Business + Baby. If you know either one of them, they are "a force to be reckoned with" individually...imagine what a powerhouse they are together, right? RIGHT! This book will help women who are already moms (or are thinking about becoming moms in the future) learn how to take charge of the family/work balance by starting their own businesses.

As more women become mompreneurs, there is an increased need for a book that will cover all aspects of how moms can successfully start and run a business that allows them to make money, pursue a profession, and have time to devote to the kids as well. This practical, user-friendly book will draw on Aliza and Danielle's own experiences, and their interviews with moms who've started their own successful businesses. In addition, they interviewed numerous business experts about funding for women, and the book will include valuable information about the current alternative sources of funding for female entrepreneurs.

The book debuts on October 15th but you can pre-order it right now! Also, be on the look out for the book tour hitting a city near you! (Yes, Atlanta is among the stops!)

Be sure to follow Aliza, Danielle, and the book on Twitter and "Like" Mom, Incorporated on Facebook to show them some "Digital Sisterhood" love.

Happy Labor Day, everyone! I hope you've had a relaxing long weekend. Though today is a holiday and the last thing you are probably doing is reading blogs...especially blogs about "work" stuff but I sometimes try to start off the week with something that inspires and motivates your entrepreneurial spirit.

If you work for yourself, you most likely have learned to work by faith. Along with faith comes trust...or at least it should. As entrepreneurs, having faith is just the first step...we have to trust what we believe...what we have faith in. And that's where we sometimes fall short. When we don't trust, we lose our faith...then fear takes over...then #fail :(

I always start my day with reading something to get my mojo in motion and today, I found something about trust that I'd like to share with you...

"Trust is not about being comfortable. It is about being willing to move beyond your comfort zone when there is absolutely no evidence you will be supported. Trust is not about looking for evidence that you are doing things right every step of the way as you move toward the end result. Trust is about keeping the end results in mind no matter what steps you have to take to get there, or how bad you feel while you are stepping. Trust is not about the work you have to do in life being easy or having other people support you in getting through the work. It is about your ability to do the hard work without losing sight of why you are doing it, when other people try to convince you that you should be doing something else. Trust is not about getting something back for the work you do as a sign that you are doing the right thing. It is your ability to keep doing the work even when it looks like there is nothing coming back. Think of it this way... Trust is based on your ability to stand your ground and rely on your own abilities, knowing that no matter what happens, you will be better off than you were at the beginning. Anything less than this is not trust."

~ Iyanla Vanzant in "Until Today"

You're on the right path and you are doing the right thing...trust me... trust YOU!

#30DaysofGood Challenges Us to "Connect with People" #SocialGood

I discovered the print version at my one of my favorite places, Starbucks, a few years back and I have been hooked on all of the fun, inspiring, and fascinating stories and statistics on how people all over the world are using technology, art, music, recycleables, their voices...you name it... to make a positive impact on the planet and the people on it.
If you participate, you are strongly encouraged to share your experiences on your blog and social sites using the #30DaysofGOOD hashtag. September is all about connecting with people.
