Have a ripe mango and pomegranate, had found the guac. recipe at Epicurious, now will try your slaw recipe, sounds great! (Not ALL of us Iowans are gun-toting, and as narrow minded as Stephen Bloom might have given the impression - though I wonder if his piece in the Atlantic was to be read at least in part with a sense of humor, a la Charles Dickens...) Thanks for the recipes... just found you on a Google search... I'm in Davenport, IA, BTW.

Hello CLZ - I see that you have some biases against American cars. Since I've recently been working in this area, I would be happy to share with you some of the innovations going on in the Detroit 3. Please contact me with questions, comments, or concerns. But not complaints, please.

Hello Chris! Hope you're having a beautiful day. I am wondering if your photo of the United States Flag is being sold anywhere? I would like to purchase it to use it to use on a government website for Oklahoma City.

Thank you.

You think some of those marketers are in the facebook group about tweeters who tweet about podcasters who talk about marketing bloggers?

Chris, the question about influence is an excellent one. It's not one that the tool is directly built to answer, but I can think of some experiments where we might combine MC information with other metrics out there that help determine influence. For too long, we've used link data as our influence metric, in part because it was really all we had - technorati and others did a great job of sharing that data, and we all had fun playing with it. But good traffic info is critical for these analyses, and data sets like Google Ad Planner are extremely promising. Where Media Cloud can be most useful, I think, is in tracing how ideas spread between different branches of media. Once we're able to build a graph of that ecosystem, questions of readership and influence will be able to be added in as weights on edges of the graph... In other words, you're absolutely on the right track - we're going to need your help and the help of other smart people to figure out how to combine our data with other sets to ask and answer the right questions.

I agree--we need something like a fast cherry red silent clean burning ride to carry the message that the old way is just well...bankrupt. Just look at those tired old dudes in power...do they look like people who have great new ideas?
The good news is, they'll be dying off soon.

Nice and thought provoking commentary, Chris. You make a good point when you say that:

"So, Detroit has been shielded from economic reality in the US by a curtain of cheap oil and cheap carbon. Suddenly the curtain is pulled back and, uh-oh, Detroit is caught on stage with its pants around its ankles."

However, I have to disagree a bit. You mentioned that part of the reason that Japanese, Korean, and European auto makers are faring better is that the Kyoto Protocol legally required them to be greener. That does make sense to me.

Take a look at Toyota, who is a model for 6-sigma efficiency and innovation. They began research and development on alternative fuel cars in 1993 --- that was 4 years before the Kyoto Protocol (http://www.toyota.com/html/dyncon/2007/september/birthday.html).

They are now being rewarded by the market for such foresight. The big 3 auto makers lacked this drive because of cheap oil in the 90's and early 00's.

This really reminds me of the old tale of the Ant and the Grasshopper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ant_and_the_Grasshopper). The US auto makers were out "playing" creating gas guzzling SUV's that were selling out. If they didn't ever expect gas prices to rise, then they weren't paying attention. They didn't prepare for winter and now they could be left out in the cold.

I read a statement from the Governor of Michigan that 1 out of every 10 jobs in America rely on the US auto industry, which is why we need to save them. What gets lost in all of this is that if they request bankruptcy protection, they won't disappear. GM and Chrylser will still merge, creating efficiencies, and they can begin to restructure. People will lose their jobs, but they have only their poor leadership to blame.

If we use any of that $700 million for the auto industry, you can be certain the airline industry will be next in line, and the credit card industry won't be far behind.

Good article.

Can I borrow that "first grade" graphic? I think it's a pretty good summation of one way to innovate. There are many instances however where innovation occurred without $$$.

Gary Vaynerchuck has built a phenom brand online centered around wine.

Hugh McLeod does similar stuff for a winery out of South Africa.

It's difficult to find new, non-tech businesses online that have successfully branded themselves--much easier to find established brands that moved online, or tech companies surfing the early-adopter wave.
